Verses Used to Support the Trinity - John 1:1 (Part 1)

  • Is Jesus Christ God or the created Son of God? This teaching explores the phrase “and the Word was God” from John 1:1, focusing on the Greek word theos, which is translated as “God” or “god”. In this instance, theos may legitimately be translated without the use of the indefinite article, or “what God was, the Word was”. The Word of God has the attributes of God.

    People say I'm not saved if I don't believe in the Trinity. The only thing that made me question the Trinity teaching was the words of Jesus. Either I follow Jesus or man. I chose The Son of God.

      Just Chillin- What's funny is Jesus didn't teach anybody the trinity or modalism yet people demand it is necessary! Yet none of the writers or disciples of Jesus believed in either one of these false systems!

    I find this very interesting. I found myself thinking this very thing, if I was stuck with the translation "the Word was with God, and the Word was God". I started thinking what if it doesn't mean he literally "was" God? But rather the representation of God, in perfect union and qualities, as God's word and will. ("If you've seen me, you've seen the father also"). When I was a Jehovah's Witness I'd read their translation which says the "Word was a god". While it can be argued that Jesus was a 'god' in the context of other scriptures, to me it just seems a bit out of place given the spirit/message of the gospels. So the suggestion of "what God was, the Word was" does seem to fit a lot better. Anyway, I'm open to keep adjusting my understanding, I've much still to learn.

    I think even if the translation should be as you suggest, it is still heavily Trinitarian. The reason for this is that this alternate translation (What God was, the word was) could still mean Jesus is God.
    But the biggest problem for the Unitarian view of John 1:1 is John 1:2-3 which says, "He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being."
    Certainly this sounds as if Jesus is eternal & the Creator??

      I am a Christian (am a member of the Iglesia Ni Cristo or Church Of Christ). John 1:1 does not teach that Christ is God. The phrase in John 1:1 "and the Word was God" is equivalent to "and the Word was Divine" (Goodspeed Translation; Moffat Translation). The word "God" was used not as a noun but as an adjective to describe the quality of God's word which is powerful (Gen. 17:1; Luke 1:37). The "Word" in the verse refers to the PLAN of God since the beginning concerning Christ (I Peter 1:20) which was fulfilled when Christ was born of a woman (Galatians 4:4). Thus, John 1:1 says, "In the begining was the Word, and the Word was with God..." because it's God's plan. If the "Word" were another God, there would be two Gods, and it will contradict the biblical truth that there is only one God: the Father in heaven.

      No, we can't say that this verse is heavly trinitarian. A author calling someone God is not a big deal, if you have read John, his language is same all over the Book, and In Old testament GOD himself called Moses God ... So, can you please make trinity into Fournity????😂 Add moses as well...
      Here is verse: "And he shall speak for you to the people, and he shall be as your mouth, while you shall be to him as God” (Exod.4:16).

    1) Who's Word is being referred to?

    Col. 2:9? I believe this should be recognized as a Hebraism: " For in him all the plenitude of mghtiness dwells bodily, and in him you are made full, who is the head of all principality and power." Jesus, in his spiritual body, has been given all mightiness needed to be "head of all principality, and power,", recognizing that the Most High is excepted in that which Jesus is made head of. -- 1 Cor 15:27.

    Beautifully explained and I understand what you are saying. I keep looking at all the videos and commentaries re John 1:1 and the Trinity and all seem to put their slant on it. I believe in God and I believe in Jesus, and I am convinced Jesus was not God BUT I believe God gave Jesus as the ultimate sacrifice for our sins. I also believe God gave Jesus his power to demonstrate his direct connection to God. I would have thought verses such as 1 Timothy 2:5 would explain the relationship. So I ask do Trinitarians believe Jesus was THE GOD? : Hope I'm right

    • @lordchampa1047
      @lordchampa1047 8 років тому +16

      First of all, we have to understand what's going on... God is the one addressing the Messiah here. Jehovah's not talking to himself. Secondly, why did God call his Son God? Is he saying his Son's God, too? No, for the Bible tells us that Jehovah's the only true God. Even Jesus said it. God called him that because his Son's throne will be like God's. Since the Kingdom will be handed over to Christ, he also sits on the throne and is like his Father in heaven. Therefore, God was just exalting his Son's position.

      Patrick Petty- Hebrews chapter-GOD/JEHOVAH calls JESUS GOD- and you are asking if GOD is calling JESUS GOD-serious ? how blind can you be ?
      is there a verses where JESUS is called THE TRUE GOD also? yes there is 1 john 5:20
      JESUS was GOD before HE became Human- so your argument that GOD exalted JESUS, is base- because JESUS was GOD-SAME NATURE as GOD before his incarnation.

      C 19 Yehovah's not Yeshua, dude.. Yeshua's Yehovah's Messiah. He was sent to teach Yehovah's Torah and to spread Yehovah's name throughout Israel. Many people like you don't know the Father's name because your pagan Greek Bibles removed it. And now, this Trinity god exists...

    So the Word was qualitatively like God? But He was pre-existing before being born? So He's obviously not a man. Then what, an angel?
    I thought Biblical Unitarians say that Jesus' life was created in the womb of Mary, so from that perspective he's not pre-existing except as some kind of idea that God our Father had.
    Plus, if the Word is qualitatively like God, then he is everlasting, right? There is no one everlasting but God, as far as I can tell from the Bible.
    Can you explain this?

    John S. (in this video) is not saying that the person of Jesus pre-existed before his birth, but that the Word (logos) existed before the birth of Jesus. Biblical Unitarians believe that the Word did not become a person until the Word became flesh (John 1v14), which refers to the conception of Jesus in Mary's womb.

    I did a major study on the meaning of the term "Son of God" (see my video "Who are the Sons of God?"), and found that it is synonymous with *a* god - Psa. 82:1 "God (elohim) stands in the congregation of the mighty (elohim); He judges among the gods (elohim)." Not sure what your defn of "Word" is tho. Is the Word the Bible? Is it Jesus? Is it the attributes of God? Please don't tell me its all of those, bcuz that's just a dishonest effort to defend inconsistencies in the Bible.

    I believe John 1:1 should be understood in the context of Hebraic usage of forms of the word we often tranlisterate as EL (meaning mighty, strong, God, a god, etc.). The KJV and all translations I know of recognize the Hebraic usage of EL as meaning mighty, strong, etc. Applying this to John 1:1, we have "the Word was mighty", or "the Word was a mighty one."

    If Jesus is the 'ONLY' begotten Son of God then that means His Father is God. Anyone with any real honesty knows that when a son is born, he is born with the same nature as his father. Since God is an eternal being then his Son is ALSO eternal.

    Jesus was "theos,"a god" or "divine", not " ton Theon". Many times the bible applies the term 'God" to those who represent him, like it is in the case of Psalms 82, Exodus 7:1, or Exodus 4:16.
    The Sahidic Coptic translation, dated back to the 2nd , 3rd century, actually translated John 1:1 as "a God"
    I must say that Jehovah Witnesses have been preaching this for decades, since they started back in the 1800s, but were always ridiculed....

    Having researched a lot on this subject recently I've come to the conclusion that it would be absurd to believe John 1:1 means that Jesus was literally himself God,because it would contradict the entire rest of the Bible's description of Jesus' nature as a mediator and SON of God, not to mention contradicting the way Jesus acts and speaks as a subordinate to God.

While in the days of his flesh (Heb 5:7), he was a little lower than the angels in his being. (Heb 2:9) Having given his being as a human for our sins (Heb 10:10), God did not raise him in the flesh, but as a spirit being, with a bodily glory greater than he had before. -- Col 2:9;

    @biblicalunitarian Please keep spreading the great news that the God of Abraham, Issac, and Jacob has a SON. "Son of God' and "God the Son" are definitely not equal terms. YHWH created his son before ANYTHING and used his only son to create everything that has ever existed (Colossians 1:15).
    YHWH took his OWN word (morals, principles, ethics, etc) and fashioned it into a creature that is his IDENTICAL AND EXACT form, likeness, POWER, and character. Christ even has the authority and power to forgive sins!! Thus, by definition this creature would be defined as a SON. Christ is the ONLY begotten/created of the Father. Everything else was created by the Son!
    Although the Father is the architect of EVERYTHING, his son was the CARPENTER/BUILDER who brought everything into existence. The secret of the Bible is that Father God has a SON! God ordained his son to create the world as well as redeem the world.
    Christ is the Lamb of God who took away the sins of the world. The 1st commandment strictly teaches that we have no other God besides the Father (YHWH) who brought the Israelite's out of Egypt. There is ONLY 1 God, who is the Father. And that God has a SON. YHWH bless you!

      Wrong, John a monotheistic Jew would not be introducing polytheism.
