Same with The Cure covers. Both bands worked out their arrangements so well that most attempts at covers end up going horribly wrong. This, though, is not a bad cover. They stripped it down enough to make it work. Of course, to make it good enough (read, "perfect") would take a lot more.
It's arrangement and vocal range, I think. Josh doesn't go for those low notes. Morrissey can really nail it in the bass-baritone range, which adds a lot of drama to the music.
the original was waaaay better. waaaaaaay better. way way waaaaaaay better... dont get me wrong they NAILED the guitar and the lyrics (10/10), but the vocals... to me it sounded like he was reading cue cards and reciting lines (3/10).
There really should be a law against covering The Smiths...it just never works. Some attempts are better than others (Radiohead covering the headmaster ritual), but all fall short by a wide margin.
I think there should be a law against singing certain smiths songs ,especially for example bigmouth strikes again was made for morrisey and anyone who I've seen singing this song online, ruins it for me, but with songs like "there is a light , please please et me get what I want , sound amazing with different unique voices
The album version of this song is amazing. The version in this video... not so much. Seriously, if you don't like this rendition, try the one on their first album. It's better in every single way and they really should have just used it for the video as well.
Good God, what a train wreck. That is THE worst singing I have ever heard in my life. To everyone's horror, you chose to record it. Why dude? Why?? :-)
The vocalist's voice is so similar to Michael Stipe's voice, from R.E.M.
i thought the vocals kinda reminded me of tragically hip a bit too
these two could make a version of shiny happy people as well
No, this guy here can actually sing, instead of singing Whiny Crappy People.
Yes, it really is. 2 of my faves, The Smiths & REM in 1!
Josh Joplin (the singer) has a song with his old band that starts "I sound like Michael Stipe and I dream like Carl Jung."
R.E.M with Smiths lol
At least this is better than the Placebo cover, they're fucking terrible, I can respect Joplin for not completely butchering the song.
I agree. I just heard the Placebo cover and couldn't even finish it.
I liked that it's the only version that I found with the woman's voice too besides the original! Now you have fans in Brazil too
Fun fact: the woman’s voice in the original is actually just morrissey pitch shifted.

Among The Bricks and Asphalt ...Like a lot of their songs . this is not one of them.

A really good cover of The Smiths. Plus he sounds a bit like Michael Stipe.
I Love this Smiths song, and I'm not insulted when someone recreates it, especially when it's like this, nicely done, indeed.
Michael Stipe much
Great cover guys, the best of this song I've heard!
Big month
This was awesome!!
That's bullshit...
Uuul chow
He reminds me of Johnny Knoxville for some reason.
Very creative and beauty cover.
what the f
I think it's a decent cover, but the song falls flat without its bassline.
Not 100% true, Placebo did a great one.

bad attempt really...his voice ruining a classic...to much of a tremble in his voice...sounds like mumford doing smiths which is against the law.

Excellent. Fabulous song, and a beautiful acoustic attack here. Another angle, with strength. Thanks to you both for this reinvention.
i really only like the guitar work in this... i'd like this x1000 more if he actually sang with feeling. sounds like hes reading cue cards
yes this is the best song from this song, amazing guitars and vocals go for more:)
I’m still stuck on Hand In Glove. Another masterpiece.

Came in expecting another mediocre cover, but am very pleasantly surprised. Awesome version.

The music itself is not bad, but the vocals just aren't delivered with the same oompf that Morrissey gave.
@OxmoonLives I so agree with you!! I think its pretty awesome that people are doing covers of the Smiths!!
@xCarpeJugulumx Check out Slapshot's version. I think it is pretty rad.
F*cking fantastic cover... The more I listen to it, the more I think I like it better than the original!
willie nelson brought me here, think I'm going back
Yeah... I have to agree with ninia on this.
@evagelionneonpx You mean the Smiths, right?
I wanted to like it. I really did.
thumb down because of VeVo
More beautiful than the original!
Top notch !
really? i think its great.
hot man
A great version
Buena versión, pero no supera la original
pretty good cover i say:-)
great cover n_n
GTFO! Now. -_-
it's really good :)
Weak. The rhythm is off, and the singer's tone is meek. This is not a song for hipster doofuses.
muy bueno
love it.
ufck VEVO!
R.E.M suena a R.E.M
I think I like The Smiths version better...I like the harmonies, though.
Good God, what a train wreck. That is THE worst singing I have ever heard in my life. To everyone's horror, you chose to record it. Why dude? Why?? :-)
the Smiths
Word.
