For all the purists..
Sorry we didn’t play it right for you all. Neither Matt or myself really know any Smiths, nor do we listen to their music. Clearly if we were, we’d know how to play those riffs. But we’re not and so in this video the point is more about the tones.
As always the songs are worked out by ear about 20 mins before shooting. So when things are played wrong it’s purely because we don’t know any better.
As always thanks for watching, and supporting sound like!
Dude you guys killed it. Forget the haters, it was more Tham enough to get someone in the ballpark. And as far as the riffs go, Johnny is a very underrated guitarist. Those riffs of his are pretty difficult for anyone. Much less someone having to learn them in a few minutes. Much love, keep up the good work!
Let's face it... given time either of you could have worked it out note-for-note by ear.... which many can't even do. TBH I always thought you played 'soundalikes' to stop dodgy copyright claims
You could've just chosen an easier riff to learn if you only had 30 mins to do so 😂😂
You guys were awesome as always. Love this channel and everything on it.
We know Bea loves Nuno, to whom does Matt listen?
In order to sound like the Smiths, first purchase a Johnny Marr from your local guitar shop.
He's quite expensive and also requires a vegan diet.
So, this made me laugh. Pretty much how I feel every time I try to play Smiths.
Was giving it serious consideration until it jumped from 1,700 to 2,100.Im not getting it now on principle.
Comments like your's keep me diving into the comments. Bravo!
[off to buy a Johnny Marr from my local shop!]
Or at least the hairstyle and Manc accent
When hard rock players attempt the smiths it really shows how there is a lot more to playing the guitar than you can realise
Alex James amen.
He struggled greatly
True. I love Johnny's tone and technique but because of his talent I've never really tried to play it because my playing is way too sloppy.
Ive always said its bloody hard to play the smiths stuff
hell yeah, that's the beauty of it all (guitar playing)
not even marr can play like marr
Just saw him live, and I'm pretty sure he damn well can.
Noel Gallagher - “even he’s not as good as he is!”
Do be quiet
Noel coming out with utterly nonsensical bullshit once again. What does that even mean?
none of this makes sense
The irony is Johnny Marr never played a Jaguar with the Smiths. "This Charming Man" was recorded on an old Tele and Bigmouth Strikes Again was his Les Paul Standard.
To be fair to Matt & Rabea this was never going to be easy, especially for a bunch on shredders with a very low budget. Johnny Marr has always used high end quality and vintage gear and let's face it the man is a freak of nature on the guitar.
TimB4305 U got it. Gibson ES-355, Rickenbackers, Fender Telecasters and Les Pauls, very cool guitars but with an expensive price
Johnnys rolling in the Fender ad money
To be fair, Johnny Marr is using his signature Jag & Fender in his live performances, including the old Smiths tunes he still covers. So he didn't 'sell out' with Fender....it's an authentic business relationship.
Jaguar is more versatile so it's useful for playing old jangly songs and newer fuzzier songs
Yes indeed !
Nice to see Bea is mortal after butchering that this charming man riff
Sugarstone to be fair every guitarist becomes mortal when playing 'this charming man'
Sugarstone it was horrid, Bea is fantastic but he didn't do good.
Sugarstone Marr himself has played it worse live.
I mean This charming man is not that difficult of a riff, at least not the intro, I don´t understand why people mention it everytime somebody talks about "difficult guitar parts" Girl afraid" is way more difficult and complex
El Padrino it's not difficult to learn but to play in a band and play it perfectly is freaking hard!
Wow you nailed that pleasant guy!
That sounds dirty.
I dont think you should say that again
@@andrewharper1609 Accurate to the song
They also smashed "How Quickly Is the Present Coming?"
@@chubbypapaya I’m crying.
do a sounds like the cure or joy division!!!
ooh yeah the cure!!
Joy Division won't really be that good a band to cover. The guitar parts to each song were very simple, or were just chords. They weren't a band designed to stand out for their guitar playing. This was obvious due to the direction New Order moved in, going from Ian Curtis to dance-techno
these episodes would be the best ones if they did these
I suggested JD on another vid before seeing this. Obviously it was the bass that essentially made them what they were but I love the guitar tone on Closer. It's distinctly bleak and British.
@@MegaHariboboy As that is very true, to me each instrument stood out to me. Even the guitar. Bernard had a unique style in my opinion. Yes it was chords but he used them in a way that it shaped the whole bands sound
Johnny Marr didn't use a Jag until he played with modest mouse. Most of the early Smiths stuff was recorded on a Telecaster through various Fender reverb amps.
MegaCrasherMusic johnny Marr played it.
And the 330
Cherry red 335
Nigel Trueman *355
355, Les Paul, Tele, Ricky... 4 main guitars during the Smiths
This charming man- played wrong but the tone was pretty spot on
Bigmouth strikes again - damn near perfect
How soon is now - Nope
joe murrell that how soon is now tone is so much studio stuff going on it's almost impossible ... plus the trem was a load of vintage fender amps turned up
joe murrell The tone for the distorted riff for HSIN was close, even if nothing else was
the tremolo was half as fast so it was like 8th notes instead of 16th notes
I agree with you joe murrell
So for "How Soon is Now" Johnny manually panned left to right on the control board in the studio. So it was not a effect box when he recorded it.
I love how on most of the 'sounds like' vids before this, everyone was begging for a johnny marr ep...they kindly do one and instead folk saying thank you, its just a load more requests...smh, great vid guys and THANK YOU for sounding like Mr. Marr
Glad to see this being pointed out. It's always a bummer to read the comments to "sounds like" because hardly anyone comments on the actual video, it's just wading through requests.
Did you play the riffs wrong to avoid copyright?
i think in the recording, Marr uses loop
Clearly they don’t care about that in these videos, the whole point is to sound right. I’m sure these are all demonetized, they make money by selling gear. Just not quite right in this rare case.
@@mury8103 Possible. It was also sent through 2 amps, trems perfectly in phase with each other.
@@mury8103 I don't think so, bro. This can be played on one guitar in one take
@@mury8103 no he doesnt
You done fucked up the This Charming Man riff at the beginning there
Yeh it was bad. I thought he was takin the piss at first.
You can't really blame him
He does say “I don’t know if that’s how it’s played or not “
The tremolo should be twice the speed to get that synchro gating effect chaps.
Yes ^this. Tone was nice but that trem on that intro is iconic and it was rather distracting being so slow.
to be fair, there were actually multiple twins panned everywhich way, and in one ear there is a tremolo that is actually similar to the one played here. that being said, I agree that the faster one is the most important sound, it just shows how much goes into the recording process
and its not strummed like that. theres space in between each strum.
Yeah I think Johhny plays a Bo Diddley rhythm for How soon. Check out the Live at KCRW and its amazing. The vibe, the feel, tempo is really hard to nail and they did it. JohnY's vocals are really on too.
FINALLY
(also haven't watched andertons vids in a while but fair fucks to Rabea for losing weight looking great man)
7:50
Some tones are thicker than others
I died😂😂 I heard Morrissey while reading it.
some tones's mothers and thicker than other tone's mothers
I would love an episode for George Harrison or The Beatles in general, that'd be awesome :) I love these videos as well as the amount of fun it looks, i could watch em all day:') Keep it up!
I'd like to see you guys spend a little more time on ones like this, the blues and metal tones are easy by comparison to this kind of post-punk and new wave stuff where the electronic effects and tone are really the main part of the sound. Joy Division is another one, the Cure, etc. And when you've had enough of post punk, do Alex Lifeson!
stone roses?
Yes.......what he said
please !!!!!!
joshua hutton please this one
yessssss
YESS! Strat an amp and then find how to buy that many pedals and get them to sound good, an actuall fx challenge.
In the book "Songs that Saved Your Life" they say Johnny hated that Roland amp sound on the Smiths first record.
Ofc : All Johnny Marr is looking for is a good clean sound Fender amp (take a cheap Fender Mustang and you could've approached the sound of Johnny Marr, the Chorus on that is bang on for just 200 bucks for the amp.)
Sound like Little Wayne without busting the bank
cheapest guitar in store , cheapest amp in store and there you go
I don't think it's physically possible for either of them to play that bad
preach on brother Arnold! I do concur about the money part...
Shawn Mendes is miles better than little Wayne
they just did
Riff: How Soon Is Now
Album: MEAT IS MURDER?!
What is this heresy?!
No its not. Its on Hatful of Hollow. I know this because i got both albums.
Pyroboy Apeldoorn you're not an idiot man, it was on the US and Canadian releases of Meat is Murder as the song was popular in dance clubs out in the states.
It is if you're a Yank. And yes, 2/3 of my copies of MIM has How Soon Is Now? on it.
yeah and it's on most reissues too I think, doesn't really matter though, great tune
One of the reasons I really wanted you to do The Smiths (besides the fact they're one of my favourite bands of all time) is that I knew it'd be really hard to get right, and I knew it would be a good challenge for you
I thought it was a really good effort, when I planned this out in my head (I know, sad) I picked the exact same guitar.
I never expected you to get the playing spot on, I've been trying to nail This Charming Man since I was a teenager so I'm not going to hold that against you
This was never going to be a sound you could get 90% of by playing some bar chords and riffs through a DSL40, and it was clear that you were a bit out of your comfort zone which I really really respect :)
So yea, top work guys, love the series, see you on the next one :)
Sam Brenton shut your fucking dirty mouth
Is there some reason why Rabea gives a shit about your opinion? Are you two friends or something? I checked your channel and you have no videos, but maybe you're a well known musician somewhere?
Sam Brenton - No need for that.
Oh fuck off, Bea isn't immune from criticism and Sam was right they were out of their comfort zone. A lot of the other bands or guitarists they have done before have been very riff heavy rock players and Johnny Marr is the complete antithesis of rockism thus he presents more of a challenge. Honestly this missed the mark quite a lot and I'd like to see them repeat this by busting the bank as I think that opens up a lot more options such as a stereo rig with a twin reverb and using a Rickenbacker guitar which would get the sound much closer.
where's sounds like the cure? I hope you make it one day. Nice video though!
I still hope for sounds like Radiohead
Yeesss
Me too
Cheeser That would be reeeally hard to pull off. And the reason for this is because Radiohead uses so many effects and/for ambience, and a wide range of guitar tones which will require a lot of pedals and stuff.
Shammo Hamid Well....They have to focus on one era then. Maybe the bends era or hail to the theif or in rainbows.
For Jonny Greenwood, you could start with a Mexican Tele (though Jonny's main Tele has no neck pickup), with Boss RV-3 and SD-1 pedals and a VOX AC30 for the amp. The issue with Jonny's rig is that a lot of the pedals he's been cited as using are retro, weird pedals that are long since discontinued - his distorted tones are apparently heavily reliant on a Marshall Shredmaster, which hasn't been made in decades, and it's a really unique tone that would be really frustrating to try and match.
Sounds like the smashing pumpkins! Bang on job with this episode!
Peyton Scott would love this, favourite band
Peyton Scott yes please the pumpkins are my favorite too
Been asking for them to do the Siamese Dream stuff for ages & I reckon they'll do it soon. They have been pretty good so far in listening to requests, especially lately.
Peyton Scott But will they do Billy Or James
Peyton Scott Yes, please!
That would be awesome
Billy Corgan!
You guys finally did it. Been waiting for this since the first Sounds Like. Thanks!
Thanks for this one!!!!!! The addition of Matt playing bass, makes this sound spot on!!!!
Never clicked on a video faster
DAMN IT HARRY! I was about to say that ;_;
Haha! I came to say that exact thing too
Finally a vid for the indie kidz
they should do sound like the cribs :v
Sound like Ed Sheeran hahahaha no fuck him
For most of his clean tones back in the day didn't he use a telecaster? And I'm sure for charming man it was just a bit of reverb and chorus with bridge pick up? I could be wrong
Raul Castillo yeah
All things considered guy, hats off for a really solid tone! Regardless of the riff accuracy, you were damn close enough to hit the mark. Very cool!
Metal head who's been listening to the Smiths for the last few days in my car and cant believe how awesome the guitar sounds. Thanks boys.
"The main difference is a lack of switches"
I'd say the entirely different scale length is more important than the amount of switches but ok.
Hahahaha
Erik Nyberg Indeed. Andertons “sounds like” guys jump into a video unprepared regarding the specs of gear once again. Although they are pretty good at achieving the right kinds of sounds in the end. It does frustrate me that guitar shop video people mangle details of equipment spec so often though.
Sounds like RUSH and Deep Purple
Been waiting for this for sooo long
I have been waiting for this for ages
YAYYY!!
I've been asking for this for so long, thank you for finally making it!!!
You are welcome Sam :)
can you guys pleeeease do Eddie Hazel/Funkadelic???
Raul Sanchez funkadelica would be pretty cool actually!
Yes!
Raul Sanchez Damn, you just made me want to listen to Maggot Brain; I must sleep first.
this is so pleasing! i luv my squier jag (i have this same one), i'm going to pick up a boss tr-2 very soon and have been looking at getting an ac15 for sometime now. great vid, great band, thank u!
I want a Matt Fedczuk rig rundown. Hows it going, Matt? Did you go down the offset rabbit hole yet? Do tell!
Finally! I've been asking for this one for years.
I've never heard "This charming man" played so wrong but great video. been waiting for this video for a long time.
Stone roses and joy division please
This is fantastic, over the top. I learned so much. I could revolutionized education if I had a cadre of teachers like you. Keep up the great work!
Never commented on these videos, but have enjoyed very much. It's always clear the purpose is to identify what equipment might be needed to replicate a certain sound. Like many others, this effort achieves this successfully. Those looking for a perfect replication of Johnny Marr riffs should just watch the real charming man.
HOLY CRAP, YOU FINALLY DID IT! I'm a pretty big Smiths fan and always liked Johnny's tone and riffs. I think it was really, really close. Though the playing wasn't quite right, I'd say you'd done a long shot better than ballpark on the sound. Now I don't know what to ask for! For two guys who probably could care less about them, I'd say you did great. Thanks!
Johnny Marr Jag actually has totally different switches that function completely differently and it also has a staytrem bridge :)
Yea, I'd say it's improved version of original Jag switching.
leavemealoneyouprick exactly. Bang-on my ass.
and bareknuckle under-wound pickups
as much as i think the marr jag has a cool switching system, theres a couple of things you cant do with it that you can on a regular jag which i use regularly. the rhythm circuit is a piece of genius and highly underrated. i dont get how people get so confused by it, let alone when theyre plugged into a two channel amp + boost feature for each channel etc.
and yeah sometimes i start playing a song and realise i havent changed the circuit back over for that song, but who hasnt rolled their volume all the way off at a rehersall and forgotten to turn it back up at the start of the next song? xD same difference!
Sound like Tame Impala please!!
STONE ROSES PLEASE!!
Christian Beeston
plus 1
Yes john squire 89 pedal board would be good pls
I would love a full in-depth lesson for Fools Gold - pedals as well as how to play.
break out the jazzmasters and do My Bloody Valentine
Eli Trocco Or Sonic Youth.
Just cry on the guitar man
i thought that said Bullet For My Valentine for a second
now i am upset :(
^
Lol
RADIOHEAD, BUCKETHEAD RADIOHEAD, BUCKETHEAD RADIOHEAD, BUCKETHEAD

mmmmm... head
Talking Heads ;-)
Brian "Head" Welch?
Nejsayer Portishead???
These videos are awesome!
MARR FOR LIFE BEST GUITARIST HANDS DOWN
INDIE WILL NEVER DIE
hes my favorite rock guitarist. fave guitarist would have to go to either moraito chico or pdl
Please sound like Deftones
Or the smashing pumpkins that would be good too
Just get a big muff lol.
I would love to see a Deftones one. It would be interesting to see what gear you could get for when they were in their White Pony era, but at the same time, Stephen uses an 8 string now which would be a New for sound like. Chino also plays guitar too and they have 3 albums when Stephan played 8 string on album
i think by far this is one of the best how to sound likes , specifically because you did mention it was a challenge and i think it was a great video hats off to you guys
I thin i've commented this on everyone one of your videos. so glad you're finally doing it. Thanks guys
1:40 aah-em, the main difference is the scale length
bigearl33 pretty sure the switching is the biggest difference as that is going to give a larger number of tones.
This honestly made me look up Johnny Marr again and what other projects he has done. I never knew that he was involved with two of my all time favorite records: "We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank" -Modest Mouse & "The Empyrean" -John Frusciante! Thanks again for the great demo video :)
Brilliant episode guys.
very good, this one was difficult, nobody expected it to be perfect, so well done!
mark knopfler
Queens of the stone age
and Tony iommi without a budget
sounds like Ritchie blackmore or Wolfmother on a budget
Bill DeMong There is a Mark Knopfler video as far as I know
Sean Doyle but without a budget?
There is a tiny iomi black sabbath one
sounds like gary clark junior!
Fuzz and shit playing and you got it! :D
allthingsclassicrock true haha :D but i just want to see rebea play Some blues like a stoned idiot :D
Finally got Johnny Marr!! Thought the tremolo depth needed to be pulled up more and a bit more drive on "How soon is now" bit, but you nailed Bigmouth and charming man! Thanks guys!
Not a bad job guys. Notes on the Jaguar and Jazzmaster: the JM single coils are very wide but flat like they smooshed a normal single coil which gives the JM its distinct chime. Whereas in a Jag they have the metal “cage” around it which gives the Jag its sound. The Rhythm/Lead circuit will switch you from access to both pickups and the standard volume/tone pots in Lead to the roller volume/tone with lower output pots which gives it that warm almost syrupy tone and it’s only on the neck pickup. If you’re on the bridge and activate the rhythm circuit it will auto swap you to the neck and then back to bridge when you return to lead. The bottom switches on a Jag are Top- Neck pickup On/Off, Middle- Bridge On/Off, and Bottom- Strangle which cuts the bass. Also a big difference about the Jag from most other Fender’s is the it’s 24 scale length instead of the 25 you’d normally find. Lastly to properly set up and play an offset guitar you must remember that the bridge was designed like and arch top. So you need proper tension downward to play well. Which means you need to raise the bridge up off the body. Then to lower your action to the right level you need to pitch back the neck with a shim placed in the neck pocket. This will make your offset experience much nicer. Also it’s best to you .10 gauge or above strings. Hopefully I didn’t sound like a pretentious ass and this helps someone enjoy the quirky world of offsets more.
The Stone Roses, Quo, Simple Minds
RossCraigMusic John Squire is one of my favourites. I'm gonna predict for the intro to I Wanna Be Adored they're gonna make up their own thing and it'll sound horrible and nothing like the record
I can't wait to hear them butcher Waterfall
RossCraigMusic Hahaha
Tame Impala, Radiohead or the Beatles!
Excellent! Congrats!
Love Marr and the Smiths, and I think you guys did a great job for what you're trying to accomplish.
Mastodon by busting the bank!
The WHO
Right
Which era?
Pete has used a lot of guitar over the years, he used a Rickenbackers, Strats, Teles, Les Pauls and SG's
he had a signature Les Paul Deluxe, but way too much money
and for amps he uses Hiwatt which Andertons don't stock
Well, it has to be the SG+HiWatt era, innit.
He also had a Rickenbacker signature model with f holes Insted of the cats eye, and had 3 pickups it's was called the 340 I believe it was basically and upgraded 330
yes!!!!! thank u for this one guys, love it
That was a pretty incredible sound match. Good job
MEGADETH PLZ
Manuel Serassio What era?
GunsnRosesfan2012 All albums have good riffs, but RIP its my favourite
If you're going Rust in Peace the line up is gonna be Marty and Dave
but you could go Kiko and Dave
or Chris and Dave but we're going Marty and Dave on this one
It's time for a Sounds like Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead. ALL HAIL TO JONNY.
Impossible feat!
Great video guys!
You guys are brilliant man
Sound like Ritchie Blackmore!!!
FINALLY, but please sound like highly suspect.
I agree. They're killin it
Sugarstone Sweet guitar sounds and riffs in that band. One of the coolest newer bands I think.
Thanks guys! much appreciated, great job!
Top video Big mouth strikes again sounds really good.Think I'll be acquiring another Squire guiitar. Well done lads.
Sounds like 'Hank Marvin' (The Shadows)..Now there's a tricky one ;)
Owen_W strat, vox, done.
such an underrated guitarist!
Sound like Opeth!!!
You guys finally did it Matt and Bea i love you
Just from the opening clip of this charming man, it sounds a little weedy
isthisbetterYT? I mean, it is *without* busting the bank.
Yeah I realise that but I'm just saying it sounds a bit weedy for Johnny Marr, same thing can be said about the SRV sounds like. They've done a great job with it but it just needs a bit of extra thickness from the guitar
Don't get me wrong, I do agree! :)
Yeah, something was really off with that.
I think it's just that they played it wrong.
Brian May ?
thanksssss for this !
Bloody brilliant!
SOUND LIKE THE EAGLES PLEASE!
ThatGamerGuy77 man fuck the eagles
120joaopedro dude!
ThatGamerGuy77 Too many guitarists, too many guitars, too many styles. Maybe Sound Like Joe Walsh.
No Fuck you

Great job! I've had to replicate The Smith's sound for a cover band and it was not easy.
great job guys!
Sounds like Status Quo would love to see that one of my all time favorite bands and also a tribute to Rick Parfitt
Rest In Peace man!
Good effort lads - not easy. If you revisit in the future you might want to check out Allison Bennett's channel. She's the guitarist for a fantastic Smiths tribute band and has the sounds down pat. She has walk throughs including things like the timing for playing against the tremolo on How Soon is Now.
True. She's very talented, but doesn't she use a Gibson most of the time?
Finally!! Been hoping you'd have a crack at doing Jonny for ages & although I think a Gibson ES355 (or Rickenbacker) would have been a better choice for the early Smiths stuff, I know he now uses his Jaguar for just about everything. I'd say tone wise, you pretty much nailed it & you got 'Bigmouth' perfectly. I thought Matt did a good job of reproducing Andy Rourke's bass lines which helped a lot too. Nice one lads, you've just motivated me to plug in & start playing some Smiths riffs. Cheers!
FINALLY! After al this time... I'm so happy right now wow :)))
Sound like Radiohead!!
Jonny uses a telecaster with a built in Killswitch button so they could get a Squier tele deluxe or a vintage modified but if the Killswitch isn't a big deal then a Modern Player tele would sort you out! for this i'll go with the killswitch, he uses Vox for cleans and Fender for the Higher gain stuff, so Bassbreaker 15 combo would be a shout, fx is a toughie cos he uses a lot, but i'll say Pro Co Rat to replicate his Marshall Shredmaster, Phaser and Envelope filter for Paranoid Android's 2nd solo (if rabea is daring enough to play it!) and i know he uses a whammy in live versions so get that!
Fender Squier Telecaster Deluxe - £355
Fender Bass Breaker 15 - £517
Pro Co RAT Solo - £176
EHX Nano Small Stone Phaser - £61
Dod 440 Reissue Envelope Filter - £90
Digitech Whammy V - £170
TC Electronic Hall of Fame Mini - £85
Grand Total - £1454
William Allison You've replied to me before
jonny clean= Tele with a humbucker in the bridge-> SD-1 overdrive into AC30
Dirt = Shredmaster into a the clean channel of a solid state fender
other common fx:
Boss rv-3 for ambient leads
Roland re-20 space echo emulation for delays
akai headrush for looping
digitech whammy
DOD440 envelope filter
Small stone phaser
with those pedals you can get almost any radiohead tone. He also has a volume pedal, a freeze pedal, and a tremolo
Finally!!!!!!!!!!! Can you attempt to do prince please
They could even get Danish Pete to help out as he seems to be a big fan of Prince.
Harrison Mayhew-Kemp boss pedals - that's pretty much all he used!
that would be super cool
Great job lads.
Awesome Job!
