    For all the purists..
Sorry we didn’t play it right for you all. Neither Matt or myself really know any Smiths, nor do we listen to their music. Clearly if we were, we’d know how to play those riffs. But we’re not and so in this video the point is more about the tones.
As always the songs are worked out by ear about 20 mins before shooting. So when things are played wrong it’s purely because we don’t know any better.
As always thanks for watching, and supporting sound like!

Dude you guys killed it. Forget the haters, it was more Tham enough to get someone in the ballpark. And as far as the riffs go, Johnny is a very underrated guitarist. Those riffs of his are pretty difficult for anyone. Much less someone having to learn them in a few minutes. Much love, keep up the good work!

Let's face it... given time either of you could have worked it out note-for-note by ear.... which many can't even do. TBH I always thought you played 'soundalikes' to stop dodgy copyright claims

The irony is Johnny Marr never played a Jaguar with the Smiths. "This Charming Man" was recorded on an old Tele and Bigmouth Strikes Again was his Les Paul Standard.
To be fair to Matt & Rabea this was never going to be easy, especially for a bunch on shredders with a very low budget. Johnny Marr has always used high end quality and vintage gear and let's face it the man is a freak of nature on the guitar.

Joy Division won't really be that good a band to cover. The guitar parts to each song were very simple, or were just chords. They weren't a band designed to stand out for their guitar playing. This was obvious due to the direction New Order moved in, going from Ian Curtis to dance-techno

One of the reasons I really wanted you to do The Smiths (besides the fact they're one of my favourite bands of all time) is that I knew it'd be really hard to get right, and I knew it would be a good challenge for you
I thought it was a really good effort, when I planned this out in my head (I know, sad) I picked the exact same guitar.
I never expected you to get the playing spot on, I've been trying to nail This Charming Man since I was a teenager so I'm not going to hold that against you
This was never going to be a sound you could get 90% of by playing some bar chords and riffs through a DSL40, and it was clear that you were a bit out of your comfort zone which I really really respect :)
So yea, top work guys, love the series, see you on the next one :)

Oh fuck off, Bea isn't immune from criticism and Sam was right they were out of their comfort zone. A lot of the other bands or guitarists they have done before have been very riff heavy rock players and Johnny Marr is the complete antithesis of rockism thus he presents more of a challenge. Honestly this missed the mark quite a lot and I'd like to see them repeat this by busting the bank as I think that opens up a lot more options such as a stereo rig with a twin reverb and using a Rickenbacker guitar which would get the sound much closer.

For Jonny Greenwood, you could start with a Mexican Tele (though Jonny's main Tele has no neck pickup), with Boss RV-3 and SD-1 pedals and a VOX AC30 for the amp. The issue with Jonny's rig is that a lot of the pedals he's been cited as using are retro, weird pedals that are long since discontinued - his distorted tones are apparently heavily reliant on a Marshall Shredmaster, which hasn't been made in decades, and it's a really unique tone that would be really frustrating to try and match.

Although they are pretty good at achieving the right kinds of sounds in the end. It does frustrate me that guitar shop video people mangle details of equipment spec so often though.

Never commented on these videos, but have enjoyed very much. It's always clear the purpose is to identify what equipment might be needed to replicate a certain sound. Like many others, this effort achieves this successfully. Those looking for a perfect replication of Johnny Marr riffs should just watch the real charming man.

HOLY CRAP, YOU FINALLY DID IT! I'm a pretty big Smiths fan and always liked Johnny's tone and riffs. I think it was really, really close. Though the playing wasn't quite right, I'd say you'd done a long shot better than ballpark on the sound. Now I don't know what to ask for! For two guys who probably could care less about them, I'd say you did great. Thanks!

as much as i think the marr jag has a cool switching system, theres a couple of things you cant do with it that you can on a regular jag which i use regularly. the rhythm circuit is a piece of genius and highly underrated. i dont get how people get so confused by it, let alone when theyre plugged into a two channel amp + boost feature for each channel etc.
and yeah sometimes i start playing a song and realise i havent changed the circuit back over for that song, but who hasnt rolled their volume all the way off at a rehersall and forgotten to turn it back up at the start of the next song? xD same difference!

Not a bad job guys. Notes on the Jaguar and Jazzmaster: the JM single coils are very wide but flat like they smooshed a normal single coil which gives the JM its distinct chime. Whereas in a Jag they have the metal “cage” around it which gives the Jag its sound. The Rhythm/Lead circuit will switch you from access to both pickups and the standard volume/tone pots in Lead to the roller volume/tone with lower output pots which gives it that warm almost syrupy tone and it’s only on the neck pickup. If you’re on the bridge and activate the rhythm circuit it will auto swap you to the neck and then back to bridge when you return to lead. The bottom switches on a Jag are Top- Neck pickup On/Off, Middle- Bridge On/Off, and Bottom- Strangle which cuts the bass. Also a big difference about the Jag from most other Fender’s is the it’s 24 scale length instead of the 25 you’d normally find. Lastly to properly set up and play an offset guitar you must remember that the bridge was designed like and arch top. So you need proper tension downward to play well. Which means you need to raise the bridge up off the body. Then to lower your action to the right level you need to pitch back the neck with a shim placed in the neck pocket. This will make your offset experience much nicer. Also it’s best to you .10 gauge or above strings. Hopefully I didn’t sound like a pretentious ass and this helps someone enjoy the quirky world of offsets more.

Been hoping you'd have a crack at doing Jonny for ages & although I think a Gibson ES355 (or Rickenbacker) would have been a better choice for the early Smiths stuff, I know he now uses his Jaguar for just about everything. I'd say tone wise, you pretty much nailed it & you got 'Bigmouth' perfectly. I thought Matt did a good job of reproducing Andy Rourke's bass lines which helped a lot too. Nice one lads, you've just motivated me to plug in & start playing some Smiths riffs. Cheers!

Jonny uses a telecaster with a built in Killswitch button so they could get a Squier tele deluxe or a vintage modified but if the Killswitch isn't a big deal then a Modern Player tele would sort you out! for this i'll go with the killswitch, he uses Vox for cleans and Fender for the Higher gain stuff, so Bassbreaker 15 combo would be a shout, fx is a toughie cos he uses a lot, but i'll say Pro Co Rat to replicate his Marshall Shredmaster, Phaser and Envelope filter for Paranoid Android's 2nd solo (if rabea is daring enough to play it!) and i know he uses a whammy in live versions so get that!
Fender Squier Telecaster Deluxe - £355
      Fender Bass Breaker 15 - £517
Pro Co RAT Solo - £176
EHX Nano Small Stone Phaser - £61
