Steve Upton was the best fit for this band. Very fluid/ smooth. The fills fit perfectly. He kept things flowing/ pulsing. Killer drummer.

So true. He was seriously underrated and unrecognised by much of the music press but definitely not by Wishbone fans. As you state, an integral cog in the wheel with at times, a great jazz feel.

Amazing how when the chemistry of the original four band members gets interrupted it’s never quite the same. The Ash had a tremendous run with the first 4 Albums and Live Dates. One of the best runs of any Band. This is them in their absolute prime. Steve Upton is outstanding on Drums!

The contribution from Martin Turner on bass and lead vocals is so often overlooked and under appreciated. Take him out of the sound and you have a completely different band - a good one no doubt, but so much of that unique wishbone sound gone. I’d argue that if Martin had left WA in place of Ted Turner, the band would have folded. Thanks also to everyone in the comments for recognising the immense talent of Steve Upton, an epic drummer. I heard that he moved to France. Is he still living there?

I saw them twice-sadly not with Ted Turner, but with Laurie Wisefield in the There's The Rub tour. Still, you don't expect a live act to actually surpass its recordings (especially on the vocals) but in all respects, this band FAR EXCEEDED its album performances live, and with the sheer volume-earsplitting, and just honey to a young man's ear-it was an experience probably better than going into space.
I was so into Wishbone Ash back in '72-'75 that you could almost say they were a religion. It's SO sad how their animosities have turned them into bitter old men . . . just the worst possible outcome of one of the best rock bands ever to have been on earth.

@@mozartsmate6358 But having both the books written by Martin Turner and Andy Powell, it comes out very clearly that Powell is the villain in this piece. And now he traipses around the world daring to call himself "Wishbone Ash" . . . that's a laugh. If anyone was ever Wishbone Ash it was Martin Turner, whose book is excellent, by the way. Powell's is just an exercise in narcissism.

@@kamakirinoko Absolutely correct. Martin's band is far superior to 'The Andy Powell tribute band'.
I saw Martin's band a few months ago, great night, and a down to earth guy with a great sense of humour.
First saw Wishbone Ash in 1969, (1st tour) and they blew me away, 54 years ago. Martin's band keeps that spirit going, whereas Andy Powell's band just seem to be going through the motions.
Best wishes to you and yours my friend.

@@mozartsmate6358 DAMN! I wish I were in England again. They'll never come to Montreal. 1969?! I was in public school at Godalming, Surrey. I wasn't to hear of Wishbone Ash till around 1972, when I was living in Zaire, Africa (but still going to public school). I wouldn't see them till 1974 or thereabouts, on a date with Johnny Winter . . . truly a concert to elevate the soul of a young guitar warrior.

It is a heart break ,just like the Beatles! It happens every time. A real good band makes it to the top of the pops, then everyone's ego takes over and they start fighting over who is the biggest star! The band breaks up and the separate pieces are not equal to the sum! You would think that they could have put their differences aside - But,the hurt goes too deep.
