the gen 5 sprites look perfectly fine when they're on a DS screen and not, y'know, blown up to a goddamn HD monitor size
Zennec Fox Agreed. I personally think the gen 5 sprites are the best in the series (aside from 3D models)
@@l5098 i think the 3d could be the best if they gave them more personality, like machamp and machoke flexing and acting all macho could add so much to the pokemon instead of a static pose
I really love the animated sprites
Thanks, that's what I was thinking

all of archeops' pokedex entries: archeops is not that good at flying
........
In it’s crown tundra Pokédex entry it even says it has to run 2 miles to get off of the ground so yeah that proves your point
It's actually the ancestor of all flying type pokemon
@@yukiharumi9250 yea but it still can’t fly
@@nate9962 Archen, the pre-evolved form, is the flightless one.
Pokémon Gen 5’s moving sprites aren’t as bad on their native console because the smaller screen size makes it much harder to notice the issues with the sprites when they move. Blowing them up makes the issues much more noticeable.
@JaroGold still, thats like judging a sega genesis game because it looks pixelated when in reality the developers accounted for the fact that you would be using a ctr tv wich "blends" some pixels making the image look way better
@JaroGold take the mario model from NSMB, it's pixelated right? that's because it was made for a small 194p screen that kids would playing on from a foot away. it's the same for the B/W sprites, it looks bad now because it was designed to fit on a small screen, even if it could've looked a bit better.
@JaroGold it does become quite irrelevant on the Nintendo DS screen, though
Well, the previous gens sprites dont look as bad even when fullscreen the entire emulator and they were released before.
Animated them on that way at least was a mistake.
@@sebastianaliandkulche it looked fine on the DS screen...
I think the problems with the gen 5 sprites are that they use direct transforms (scale, motion, and rotations) instead of frame-by-frame animations, (because that many pokemon are very difficult to animate)
If they did frame by frame animation the game size wouldnt fit in the cartridge, imagine +500 pokemon with nore that 15 diferent frames each
also you're not going to notice a tail looking weird when that tail takes up a tiny slither of a screen the size of 1 1/2 pokemon cards even if you're playing on a dsi xl
@@egon3705Do you mean sliver? Slither is a verb and it's how snakes move
there's no real problem with it either way, the sprites were designed and animated for the console they were going to be put into. If gamefreak had the time and willingness to do another sprite based pokemon game now, they'd probably fully animate all the mons using frame by frame, and also have highly detailed pixel art on top of that.
for the console it was designed for, the sprites and animations are pretty damn good honestly.

Well, technically, your problems with the 3D Model Archeops are possibly intentional design choices. Because Archeops sucks at flying. Many Dex Entries state that it is better on the ground than in the Air.

It's Dex entries say that it's *bad* at flying, not that it can *not* fly. Big difference...one means it can't fly at all, and the other means that it can fly...just poorly. Not sure why you're confused by that, seems simple to grasp...but either way...I hope that helps.

I honestly prefer the Gen 5 sprites over the new 3d models. The sprites just look more expressive and unique when compared to their stiff, soulless models. They're brimming with personality. It also doesn't help that the flying Pokémon look absolutely terrible in the newer games, especially Charizard, Salamence, and Xatu. DistantKingdom has a great video detailing why the flying 3d models are terrible.
I adore the sprites.

For me the biggest victim of color saturation is Gengar. If you look at Gengar's older sprites, it's a much darker shade of purple, to the point where there's actually a noticable difference between it's regular and shiny sprite, especially in gen 3. But as you said, color saturation transformed Gengar to look more like it's shiny so there's hardly any difference now.
I hate how so many shiny mons are just slightly saturated or desaturated color schemes honestly. I fully agree with gengar, the older games gave him this pretty dark purple while his shiny was borderline black in color. Legends Arceus did a pretty good job more recently (although the shiny could be a tad darker).
you actually missed a pretty bad error in slowbro’s gen 5 sprite. stationary, it looks fine, but when it moves its tail to the side a bit you can see that the shell on its back is missing an eye

The 3d model for archeops is so much better than the 2d one.
I honestly think the gen 5 sprites were my favorite of any of the generations. Even counting the ones that came after. I never had a issue with them looking segmented or weird. I guess the gen5 sprites look the most ''pokémon'' to me if that makes sense. The entire artstyle of gen5 is my favorite too, it all gaves nice a nice vibe to me.
UMaxii agreed
Gen 5 is my favorite generation so I like the sprites
I agree the gen 5 sprites are really cool they feel the most like pokemon
👍
Agreed, it feels lively and like the 'mons are 'dancing'.
The sprites in Generation 4 were all really great, but I preferred different poses between the three eras. An example is Gyarados in Diamond and Pearl, Heracross in Platinum, and Weezing in HeartGold and SoulSilver.
However, what I loved about all of them is that they gave us some really great animations for all Pokémon species using only two sprites per species.
Fun Fact: The 3D sprite of Thyplosion in Gen 6 is actually it's actual physical appearance in the anime. One example is Jimmy's Thyplosion.
But it’s a battle sprit though they should’ve relagte to amie
On Archeops: "it looks like it's struggling to stay afloat rather than being the completely effective flier we know it is."
White Pokedex entry: it runs better than it flies. It takes off into the sky by running at a speed of 25 mph.
UM Pokedex entry: Said to be an ancestor of bird Pokémon, the muscles it uses to flap its wings are still weak, so it needs a long runway in order to take off.
Sun Pokedex entry: Although apparently able to fly, they tended to run along the ground, averaging speeds of roughly 25 mph.
It's speed is base 110 btw lol

Mostly probably because the gen 1 sprites are less detailed than the other sprites, so Moltres just generally fits better, but also it looks more royal for some reason to me, while normal Moltres looks just like you lit a rubber chicken on fire.
That Ekans sprite from the Japanese Red/Green looks like a yawning snake. But if you're not familiar with what a snake looks like while yawning... then yeah, definitely looks like it has a duckbill. I'm glad they didn't continue doing that with Ekans.

My first ever shiny was the gift eevee from Bill in Soulsilver, now it is a beautiful shiny Umbreon, and also my first level 100 pokemon
If I may offer an argument to your stance on Gen 5, sprites...
1. The sprites were made with the DS screen size in mind, and your complaints are a lot harder, if not impossible to notice on a DS.
2. It was the logical next step for the battle system. Gen 5 tried as hard as possible to differentiate from Gen 4, and this including changing up the battle interface. If the camera was to move without moving sprites, there would be complaints similar to Sword and Shield's battles: That they're too static. The increased battle speed and moving sprites make the battles more exciting, if only by a little bit.

Yeah imagine if the sprite didn't move at all. Just standing there like idiots.

They did look choppy and wobbly though. I never noticed the problems he described on th DS screen, but it explains why they looked wobbly.

Rami006 What’s wrong with that sprite?
@@kavaler1471 Looks very creepy
@@kavaler1471 registeel is a nazi
I haven’t watched the video. But the Gen 1 Golbat sprite in the thumbnail is a sprite that i love.
Honestly I prefer the horizontal Cloyster over the vertical one. It looks closer to shelder plus it looks less suggestive.
“I am seriously not a fan of the Gen 5 moving sprites.”
Alright Michael I’m going to have to stop you right there.
@Warp Star That is not at all what I said lmao
@Warp Star opinions are ok but to say gen 5 sprites animation as a whole is bad is just wrong 😂 opinion or not
@Warp Star thats fine
@Warp Star 😂dam tbh the thought aint even cross my mind
You reminded me how in the 20+ years of playing Pokemon, I have never trained a Koffing.
Galar will be your chance.
just poison types in general for me. i recently tried using an ariados in a pokémon gold play through but it’s move set and type advantages weren’t worth a slot on my team
Its kinda crap cause he's a physical attacker but doesn't get a physical poison move in gen 4, i caught one in my gold and looked it up to be extremely disappointed, i just don't get how they can do him such a dirty like that especially with the special/physical split that gen
@@albaker1718 . Poison types are good for stalling. I have used them
I really like how the fire is animated on the cyndiquill line's 2d sprites with the more pointy and jagged look instead of the flowy looking fire of most other fire types
Typhlosion is not the only one, cyndaquil and quilava have the same problem, they removed the fire
Having the Gen 5 sprites and the 3D models moving while standing in a neutral position is better than them just sit there like a picture doing nothing in 2D
its his opinion
He’s talking about aesthetics
Is it though
?
@@ryder5637 well its a shitty opinion, srsly how are you not going to like animated sprites after going thru litetally 4 generatioms of static sprites at the time
It *is* struggling to stay afloat. Archeops aren't good fliers. The pokedex even says that they're better at running than flying
But the pokedex said that yanmega can hold an adult to fly but I can't learn fly
@@staringcorgi6475 I mean that's fair, but if Archeop is stated to struggle to fly on multiple dex AND actually been shown that it does struggle to fly, I mean something's up
@@yoshidaaimi34 so the pokedex is not a good excuse because it contradicts it self
@@staringcorgi6475 Yes, a lot of pokedex entry are bad, but that doesn't mean a lot of them aren't logical. A lot of pokedex actually give good insights on why some pokemon are like this or like that. Archeop is a good flyer based on... what?
@@yoshidaaimi34 because it knows a lot of flying type moves and is strong with those attacks. How could it use flying attacks if it struggles to fly?

Gen 5's sprites were pretty clearly animated using transform tools rather than by hand, which is why they look so bad
I think animating by hand would’ve made the game too big. There probably would not be enough space on the cartridges for that many frames per Pokémon
@@WishGenderThere are literally GBA games with better sprite animation. I think the games were just rushed like... most games in the series.
The only one I had a problem with Pokemon 4th gen was wooper. The mouth always made me uncomfortable
At least it is the closest to the official artwork.
@@hensleydodson5733Yeah but it always creeped me out
Gen 5's animated sprites aren't bad at all, honestly.
Is good in a ds or 3ds or a phone but, when you seen the sprites in full screen its possible see how they are veeeerrrrryyyy pixeleted, i personaly like then but i play in phone sooo its good

I love how returning to this video in 2024 reminds us how Typhlosion USED to look ugly, but was finally... FINALLY fixed in Scarlet and Violet.
His flames are off outside of battle, but are now CONSTANTLY out during battle. Literally the perfect execution of a 3D Typhlosion model.
