Pokémon Gen 5’s moving sprites aren’t as bad on their native console because the smaller screen size makes it much harder to notice the issues with the sprites when they move. Blowing them up makes the issues much more noticeable.
@JaroGold still, thats like judging a sega genesis game because it looks pixelated when in reality the developers accounted for the fact that you would be using a ctr tv wich "blends" some pixels making the image look way better
@JaroGold take the mario model from NSMB, it's pixelated right? that's because it was made for a small 194p screen that kids would playing on from a foot away. it's the same for the B/W sprites, it looks bad now because it was designed to fit on a small screen, even if it could've looked a bit better.
Well, the previous gens sprites dont look as bad even when fullscreen the entire emulator and they were released before. Animated them on that way at least was a mistake.

If you look at Gengar's older sprites, it's a much darker shade of purple, to the point where there's actually a noticable difference between it's regular and shiny sprite, especially in gen 3. But as you said, color saturation transformed Gengar to look more like it's shiny so there's hardly any difference now.
I hate how so many shiny mons are just slightly saturated or desaturated color schemes honestly. I fully agree with gengar, the older games gave him this pretty dark purple while his shiny was borderline black in color. Legends Arceus did a pretty good job more recently (although the shiny could be a tad darker).

If I may offer an argument to your stance on Gen 5, sprites... 1. The sprites were made with the DS screen size in mind, and your complaints are a lot harder, if not impossible to notice on a DS. 2. It was the logical next step for the battle system. Gen 5 tried as hard as possible to differentiate from Gen 4, and this including changing up the battle interface. If the camera was to move without moving sprites, there would be complaints similar to Sword and Shield's battles: That they're too static. The increased battle speed and moving sprites make the battles more exciting, if only by a little bit.
They did look choppy and wobbly though. I never noticed the problems he described on th DS screen, but it explains why they looked wobbly. Still, it was a really cool gimmick. I always wished for the Pokémon battles to be more dynamic, more like Pokémon Colloseum as a kid, so that change was very welcome.
I personally think that the gen 5 animated sprites were done through stretching and rotating the base sprite. I've stuck them onto a sprite editor, and looked at them frame by frame, and it's very noticeable that that's probably what happened.
I honestly prefer the Gen 5 sprites over the new 3d models. The sprites just look more expressive and unique when compared to their stiff, soulless models. They're brimming with personality. It also doesn't help that the flying Pokémon look absolutely terrible in the newer games, especially Charizard, Salamence, and Xatu. DistantKingdom has a great video detailing why the flying 3d models are terrible.

The sprites are fine, which he even said in the video. The only thing wrong with them is the animation, but a lot of the comments didn't understand that apparently.
@@ninja_tony I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the animations tho, they did the best they could. And i love the animations, they’re literally a lot better than the 3D model idle animations. you actually missed a pretty bad error in slowbro’s gen 5 sprite. stationary, it looks fine, but when it moves its tail to the side a bit you can see that the shell on its back is missing an eye
Gen 5 has my favorite battle animations of the entire series. Plus the constant camera movement makes combat dynamic, instead of two static figures looking at each other
@@richpichu1272 will they update the game and make them available? Oh nvm they will most likely charge you 60 bucks and make them available in the "new" Pokemon great sword and great shield
9:20 this is due to non integer scaling, something you can actually see throughout the game, not just in the pokemon sprites (if you haven't noticed sometimes characters might have different sizes of eyes, or straight up lose detail as they are further away) This would have been fixed had they kept the same engine going into the 3ds Era. Sadly... no. Edit - wow I made this comment already. I'm consistent with this idea.
I knew only a few people would catch that since they're so similar XD I used the shiny model because there is no hi-res gif of the regular model. The site I got them from has shut down, and they only got to Gen 4 with the regular models
I think the problems with the gen 5 sprites are that they use direct transforms (scale, motion, and rotations) instead of frame-by-frame animations, (because that many pokemon are very difficult to animate)
also you're not going to notice a tail looking weird when that tail takes up a tiny slither of a screen the size of 1 1/2 pokemon cards even if you're playing on a dsi xl
there's no real problem with it either way, the sprites were designed and animated for the console they were going to be put into. If gamefreak had the time and willingness to do another sprite based pokemon game now, they'd probably fully animate all the mons using frame by frame, and also have highly detailed pixel art on top of that. for the console it was designed for, the sprites and animations are pretty damn good honestly.

I don't think I've ever heard someone say the Gen 5 sprites look bad before. Gen 4 was just awful and the stationary sprites didn't help make it any less obscenely boring. I almost quit that Gen for good, but came back at BW. I think I'd probably have just quit Pokemon for good if BW hadn't done so many massive improvements to the art.

To be honest, My favorite change in Legends Arceus was battle stances for pokemon. Like for Luxray instead of just standing there, Looks like it's about to pounce. It makes pokemon look more ready for combat instead of just plainly standing up.
I actually liked gen 5, that was where i was amazed because of how much it changed. Unlike in platinum, pearl, diamond, and the rest where when u encounter a pokemon they would move just about 2 frames. Gen 5 made a huge improvement where they are moving around instead of just motionless sprites

I think the Typhlosion 3D model is adorable, and looks great for all out-of-battle contexts, but it would make sense for it to have its fire out and a more alert pose during battle.
My first pokemon game that is not an online emulator (I'm kinda young, 11 years) will be sword and shield, so from my emulating experience I loved gen 5 sprites AND still love them. They are way better than those 3d models. They ruin most shinies and colors.

I feel like a lot of the 2D sprites are more due to technical limitations rather than design, and the gen 5 animation issues clearly are from taking a shortcut and animating static sprites by stretching and warping them rather than actually creating animation frames.
except most of the pokemon have better sprites on the same console, and the ones that don't could feasibly have better sprites made within the same resolution and palette limitations
@@egon3705 cartridge size was definitely an issue. The 3DS was the first Nintendo handheld where size really didn't matter all that much, so they could afford to do the massive overcompensation that was Gen 6's models. Gen 5 doing it with segmented sprites was the most efficient way, and on the console it was made for it looked pretty great!
I've never really enjoyed the 3D sprites. I realise that it's the logical step to take, and the best way to keep current in the video games market, but I always felt they somehow looked less dynamic than the immobile 2D sprites. I think the problem is indeed the poses: they just stand there, as opposed to the cool menacing poses of the 2D sprites

11:34 this doesn’t make sense at all. I mean, if we’re going to nitpick the frames of animation in a battle scene, where everything is moving, then yes, they are weird-looking. In my opinion though, they contribute to make the pokemon a lot more alive. They’re much better than the static sprites of the previous generations.
