🙋♂️ More than once. Never offshore, but a couple of times on the flats, and always when reaching for something dropped overboard. 🤦♂️. I keep a mask and snorkel onboard…..🤣
The Lynx is considerably wider and a bit more stable. However, you could still fall off of it. Typically kayaks only flip because the person grabs the kayak as they fall out.

Robbie, that sounds like a terrible experience. I try to tell everyone to flip they kayak and practice just in case. Easy to learn when you’re calm and not in danger.
I flipped in the river on July 4 when there was so much boats and jet skis. Happen to be reaching to change my ff settings when a jet ski went by. Lost half my stuff but made it back to shore no problem
Again-flip it on purpose somewhere close to the shore. Learning how to re-enter the yak is super important for that one time you will NOT do it on purpose :):)
Flipped my Hobie Sport when I was trying to get my line out of a tree. I used my paddle to snag the line and instead hit a bees nest 🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝🐝. Yikes! A bunch if bees flew out if the nest, but I managed to not get stung. Thanks for sharing your experience, Daniel.
Great commentary on what took place. Look forward to your further break down and tutorials on what took place and how to get back in. I know it will assist me with my Predator. Great as always. Tight lines. Doc
Well, my inflatable fishing kayak is impossible to flip. I layered thick rubber and other protective coverings on it so no hook or fin damage can occur. Thing is, if your going to fish hard shell, just get a decent john boat. My west marine dinghy fits in my truck bed and is 100lbs. Just as easy as moving a yak but much safer and better equipped for fishing. I like my inflatable a lot for shallows and chill paddling. The thin plastic they use now for hard shell yaks is dangerous anyway. At least my inflatable has 4 chambers and I know I will stay afloat. Get a hole in your hard shell and your sinking bud. The only solution is to fill the hull with expanding marine foam.
My first flip was me being dumb. First I went alone. Air temp was 34 degrees and water temp was mid 50's. I had rigged a trolling motor mount using the flush mounted rod holder. Well motor messed up and as I was trying to fix it lost situational awareness of where i was in yak. Leaned to far to the side and it dumped me. Luckily I was not far from shore. Never thought it would happen to me. I will say life jackets save lives. Mine did. The shock of that cold water was something i wasn't expecting and just being able to float and get my senses was very helpful. Stay safe.
I flipped my kayak years ago by myself in December water was cold it was my fault 135 wildernesses system after the initial shock I couldn’t flip it back so I swim it in shallow water broke rods it was a mess after that incident I wear a PFD all the time I fish a lot by myself thanks for the videos I live in Tampa maybe do a trip with you thanks
I have to confess I’ve flipped one time and it was this summer. At the boat ramp…just got in to launch….unhooked the paddle with my left hand, doing something on the right…dropped the paddle…like took two seconds to finish on the right…paddle had float maybe 18”…got careless…didnt think and just leaned over…rolled over…stood up in less than knee deep water….kayak could roll 180 because it was so shallow my rod tips were on bottom just over 90 degrees. But the whole of my fatness was dumped.
Nick, you're a class act running a class business. One of these days I'm gonna mosey a little further east than I normally trek. First week of April maybe?? LOL
You describe it perfectly, it has never been some great big crashing wave that gets me, its one of those little bumps that catch you off balance - ya been swimming a couple times. Our ocean is weird here off NC, a SE wind brings a ocean swell off the main Atlantic, a SW wind is coming from FLA and brings the bumpy chop that will get ya.
I've been kayak fishing for about 8 years(started in a predator mx then a pdl) and haven't flipped or fallen out Yet. I fish every weekend pretty much year around. I always figure at some point it will happen. But one thing I learned early is that I have to manage that small space and always have a high situational awareness.
Same boat. Same story. Fish a lot and in whatever weather inshore. I think I would have to be knocked out by now to flip. After a while you get loose hips, if that makes sense.
Last summer first time out in the Gulf with my brand new PDL got caught in a storm. Waves at the beach were big coming in at an angle while I was heading straight to the beach. Got picked up and launched by a breaking wave about 10 feet from the beach. Now everytime I hear thunder I start for the shore and if the storms skips around me I'll head back out. This year I rolled one day four times in some easy surf cause I wanted to launch from ankle deep water where the waves were breaking. Also fell in the Alapaha river due to way to many Busch latte's. Nothing but good times.
First day in the pdl… may or may not have went swimming whilst reaching for the torpedo tube 😂 however I was back in just as fast as I fell out. Fun fact also the same day I thought netting a big a$$ king was a good idea
The closest I've come to flipping my Tarpon 120 is when reaching behind the seat to get stuff out of the kayak crate. Puts you in a very similar position to Daniel's. I'm inland, with no real waves, but I can imagine how easy it would have been to get rolled if waves were present. Thanks for your spot on analysis of the situation.
Flipped my BigWater reaching to another kayak for shrimp. it was dumb and I knew it in that moment... lost my Saragosa/Taramar combo. It was a sad day! Went from a 10 ' Tamarack to the BigWater and felt invincible. Can happen and will happen eventually!
I’ve come very close a couple times. Inexperience, being disorganized, and not minding my surroundings almost got me. Over time I’ve learned to keep centered in the boat and I’ve gotten better organized. But I’m not fooling myself, it will happen some day. When it comes to capsizing, there are those that have and those that will.
Great explanation, the downfall of kayaks is off center back left/ right, and loss of center of gravity and/or situation awareness. If you have been in a kayak enough you go through just that, some get wet, others just get the scare of flipping. Again great explanation.
I flipped my predator early spring this year. I was bottom fishing for walleye in a large reservoir lake hooked a tree stump when my kayak was turned sideways. The rod was in the rod holder and I was prepping another rod. The wind was around 10 mph the waves were slow rolling. I made a rookie (as veteran) mistake and reached too far over to try and unsnag the rod and a small wave hit just right as my shoulder crossed the portside and over I went...good thing is I am a strong swimmer, always practice reentry every year, and I always wear a PFD. the only thing hurt was my pride (the good thing was I was the only one in the area to witness) and my pocketbook about $500 worth of gear landed in the bottom of the lake.
Absolutely. As in motorcycling where you gear up for the fall. As the fall will inevitably come at some point. Rig your boat like you expect it to flip almost immediately. :):)
Ha, I agree with your controlled chaos. Cool, a thumbnail of the "Oh Shit" moment. Daniel I hope you know we would take a tumble for a fish like that in a heart beat, at least I would. Thanks for allowing us to learn form your experience. It was a great clip with or without the roll over. Can't believe you didn't loose anything. Daniel is that the first time you've fallen out unintentionally? You should feel good that you were able to get back in. I've fallen out on purpose but have not been able to get back in yet.
I laughed when a buddy told me he fell out of his PDL because I had kayaked for about six years starting in a little Sun Dolphin 10 footer. I was so sure of it never happening to me!!! And then it did! Stupid, not paying attention and I knew as I was reaching that it was not a good idea. And I fell out...mostly jumped/rolled out so I wouldn't roll it over. So yeah, it will happen. Especially when you are cocky. 🤣😂
Man, it looks like the Hobie got under the Predator/big water and gave it a lift. I saw his rudder flash on your back right when he flipped. It is a good wakeup call. Thank him for being a gracious cautionary tale. Keep up the great work.
That was funny though! I've had my share of "Oh 💩‼" moments, and I had to laugh at myself. You realize you're going swimming just before the swim, and it is what it is. Get your vessel righted and you onboard, then have a good laugh as you collect your stuff from the water. That's about all you can do. Once that's done, personally, I owe myself another fish before I go in. I have friends who whitewater canoe, and I want NO part of that. I'll stick to 🎣!
I've been dumped out of my kayak twice now once was definitely my fault the other could be described as my fault not paying 100% attention. When I first got my Predator PDL I was almost done sure and realize that my paddle I've gotten loose and I was reaching for it and I was reaching for it and I was reaching for it and well over I went! My fault 100%! The second time with taking off in the ocean timing the waves coming on shore. Was just about there past the breaking wave when a rogue wave hit me on the side and rolled me. I never saw the rogue wave coming towards me. I was concentrating straight ahead to get away from Shore as quickly as possible. My head should have been on a swivel it was not! Lesson learned. Always pay attention!
Sheer excitement and lack of outriggers :):):) But I agree with the general sentiment that for a fish like that I'd do the same. Twice. P.S. I do not know man, how you kept straight face. I'd laugh my effin ass off. :):)
Dont lie, who's flipped a kayak?
