With such nice weather, first take a swim in the shallows, so you know you're safe if you get tipped over. I just took an ocean dip at 15 degrees celcius; if you cannot rescue yourself in the water you're going to travel in: don't go in your kayak. Anything not waterproof, tied to the boat and preferably floating should be considered lost before starting any journey. Even if you can afford to lose your stuff, please don't litter the ocean. Cody Tolle I don't think he is much of a rookie. Just doesn't understand what he did wrong. You NEVER EVER go sideways into a wave. Start paddling or peddling before the wave gets to you. Hell, he didn't even try. If he learns from this, great, if not, then he needs to stay on the beach.
Or if the yak is able to go in reverse, point the nose into the waves and peddle to shore backwards will keep the yak stable even if a crasher gets you, it will more than likely jet you to shore as opposed to rolling the yak.
Mary Ann Simpson if you get tangled in a rod leash, then its way too long. Mine are there to secure them in rough seas. Never intended to be used while fishing. Should be long enough to take the rod out of the rod holder and remove the leash. Not to supposed to be long enough to lay the rod across your lap with attached. Paddle leash should float and be thick enough to not get twisted and be able to tangle you if tossed. This is why I stay away from home made safety gear.
Mary Ann Simpson put a small eye bolt in the bottom of your rod and attach a float on a short line to that. Long enough you can still put it in the rod holder but not so long you will have line in your lap while fishing.
Waders and water = Death by drowning. I never wear waders. EVER. Even if its snowing. I can't tell you all how many times i have fell in to an icy creek down a snow bank and was glad i didn't have those death pants on.
This is a misconception. Waders dont weight more with water in them when your in the water. Lots of videos out there to prove this. Weight doesn't change. Waders dont drown people.
Nathan Hale the weight doesn’t change...that’s not at all what he meant by saying that...think. Why wear something that will impede your ability to swim? Why not a dry suit? Lighter. Warmer. Floats. The name for them is wader. You wade in shallow water.
Been there….done that! Someone cured my beach landing, never ride the wave…ride the momentum right behind the wave. I’ve come in to the beach with 12’ surf on the west central coast with no problems and didn’t have a nervous breakdown afterwards!! Good fishing and tight lines without having a yard sale on the beach!
I've got three dry boxes, and generally keep the two smaller in the larger, lashed to the boat. Even a standard tackle box or bag that's latched or zipped will keep your stuff with you when it's lashed to the boat.
I guess it never occurred to you that things should be secured to the boat so if you capsize they won't fall out? If there was a book on kayak fishing that would be on the first page.
Well that’s a number one rule in the normal ocean kayak so you have the things to save yourself but i don’t know about fishing kayaks. Don’t really like them🤷♀️😂
That is a good question, possibly a little staging going on there. Because if I fell out of a kayak or canoe and could stand, I would be pretty surprised. I did notice how it all seemed a little too routine and almost expected.
Never Mind Hey, YOU said it. Didn't look too gnarly to me. I've NEVER kayaked but I would have TOTALLY surfed that one in with my mad skills and brass balls. Anyone who pitches all them sea monsters back is a dirty tree hugging hippy that needs a bath anyway.
Neil Armstrong You would not have surfed that one in. It was to small to surf but big enough to tumble him. He probably would have been fine if he would've taken it head on, but I really don't think he's that dumb because he did it a few times, which leads me to believe with other factors that this was basically staged as many UA-cam video's now are. One little note I would be careful with your tree hugging statement it's really not as accurate as the confidence you've placed in it. I'm not saying your wrong, you've just basically mashed two incompatible resolves together and called them something they are not. This bothers me to some level because I love nature, but human interaction with it is unatural, so it needs to be managed, or there basically wouldn't be nature extremists or non extremists because there would basically be nothing to be extreme about one way or the other cause it would be gone. See what I mean? Also sometimes, many of the times, I go fishing and release fish because I don't want to clean them and store them and think about it and cook them, I just want to go out to nature and practice my skills in the art, just to get the experience and keep up. I'm sure you can understand that?
Even the most experienced kayaker runs into issues that could have been avoided. Reading all the comments, you could have done this or that, but I give you kudos for keeping the camera rolling and demonstrating this humbling experience. As far as those “experienced” kayakers who are giving you sage advice, I don’t see their harrowing footages on UA-cam. Chris, I’m glad you’re okay, equipment can always be replaced. I’ll kayak fish with you anytime, since I’ve learned from and enjoyed watching many of your clips. Keep up the good work.
I'm not piling onto the criticism-train, suffice it to say that every kayak angler flips and that is usually the point when they get smart about leashing their gear and preparing themselves better. An expensive lesson, but a necessary lesson nonetheless. Don't give up, get prepared and get back out there!
*not being sarcastic* Is there a reason you didnt just point your nose to the shore and ride them in? I understand not wanting to dmg your yak and all but it looks like its just a sandy beach. Am i missing something? I only yak fish lakes so the waves pushing me to shore aren't capping like this. I guess what I'm really asking is "If you weren't going to nose straight into the beech with the break, and you clearly weren't trying to capsize, what WAS your plan for getting to land?"
actually because of the groves on the bottom of ocean kayaks they often do turn like that when a wave hits them from behind. It's not a like a surfboard which just goes exactly where you aim it.
I always wanted to ask if you ever tipped over, but though it was a dumb question. I just assumed you were 100% with your kayak. In the least you recovered your rods and a few plugs. I think I saw your bucket on ebay though.
You cannot hesitate when running a surf zone, timing is everything, you have to stay on the back of the wave and not let another wave run up on your stern. And broadside is definitely not the way to do it.
Timing is Really not even a big deal when coming in just stay straight and you won’t loose it, but really the thing is, be prepared to cap… especially on the sea keep your things bundled or tied down when coming in and no matter how bad you fuck up your shit isn’t spewed in 40 directions in the ocean.
As a surfer I cringe at the lost gear when watching videos like this. We are on kayaks people!! Let the wave pass you - then follow it in while laughing at your plastic navy friends strewn across the shore line. They will be watching in awe as the back of your wave pulls the yak along in the flowing current. Let alone if you have peddles and a paddle it is WAY easier to get in that spot the whole way to shore -depending on your conditions of course. Hope you have lost less gear since this video.... "keep the seat side up".
next bucket you get make sure it has a top that either snaps or screws on and has enough room to put your lure box in, hate to see that happen to anyone, I lost a bunch of tackle that way 5 years ago ( rods, lures and so forth ), sorry
I use my paddle drive to gain speed while going parallel to shore. Keep an eye on the waves and one hand on the rudder. Turn into waves when needed. When I see a break I gain speed and point toward shore. Rudder up, drive out and paddle in use the paddle to keep nose at shore.
guess the verdict is out... some claim to have busted the myth that waders increase chances of drowning others say it kills. seems proper belting and type of wader mitigates the risk. some think drowning in waders may have been more a matter of panic than the waders causing a problem. if it were me... I would still pass! it was always a kayak fishing/duck hunting no no for me.
Todd Personett It's a myth, think about it. the water inside the waders weighs the same as the water outside. So they don't "fill up and drag you under" . I think you're onto something with panic. throw in cold water ,high surf and there's the issue. In this case our intrepid yakker would be well-served to actually learn how to paddle. -
I don't know if it's an issue but what about a kid or someone stepping on the lures and getting a hook in their foot? I can see it not being an issue now that it's cold but what about the next time this happens in the summer, all because you didn't want to secure your gear.
Wow, that sucks. I've landed in the surf a few times, the way I do it is to surf a wave in, when you get just before where they're breaking paddle back hard, get behind it and then paddle hard to keep up to it. When it breaks in front of you ride the wash up into the shallows.
Come on man, those are barely visible waves just take a couple days and go out with no gear and learn how to ride those waves in. And use your damn paddle man
Every kayak, fisher men has these days at least once or twice you know when everything that could go wrong dose yes it happens to all of us, one way some way or another... 🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣🛶🛶🛶🛶🛶 Keep yakking no fear
Advice from regular Florida BTB Kayak fisherman, pull up your foot peddle just before the breakers, use your hand paddle when you are going back in, make sure you are committed & pointing straight, once you have more experience you can master the side way entry leaning into the wave with your paddles.
basically this guy knows little or nothing about kayak surf landing technique, rookie mistake, the surf is fairly small, "I don't wana die" , in 5 inches water? that cracks me up 😂
Did you pay any attention to his sonar? It went from 6 feet to like 2 in a matter of seconds. He probably would have noticed if it wasn't for the wave on his ass. Not everyone can be perfect at ocean kayak fishing like yourself.
Adam Milan yeah but if you go out you have to be ready, for instance if he did fall in in 10 ft or somethings, he’d struggle cos he’s not wearing the right stuff, you have to have some idea on how to be safe to have fun
@@adammilan6434 It's not even that, it's the matter of littering a beach full of tackle with sharp hooks and stuff plus plastic that won't degrade, etc. =/ I mean losing stuff is part of fishing anyway but best not to litter when you don't have to. =(
When I saw him just toss everything here and there, it was an uh-oh moment. You tether your pliers, don`t you? Tether everything. That was probably $100 worth of lures.
A great ending, you're still alive to fish another day, I too fell in and lost 35 years worth of lures at a freshwater lake filled with crazy jetskis. If you don't like big waves then do the big lakes and rivers🤷🏼♂️ Love your vid👍

I'm no expert and I don't want to sound cocky but why didn't you get off your kayak and walk it in? I don't it was that deep. I'm sorry you lost some of your gears but you'll be able to fish again soon ☺️
You usually cant just float in between waves, the undertow will start to pull you back into the wave anyway. Ive got a hobie and take my fins out to keep from damaging them. Youve got to use your paddle to as you drift in to correct your kayak when it starts turning. You can use the paddle as a brake and steer yourself. as long as you stay straight your ok. if you start turning sideways your over big wave or small.
Some tense moments there, didn’t no if you where going survive or not, had me glued to the screen the whole time. A true fishing hero lol . He carried on like a pork chop
For those saying he shouldve done this and that. All he needed to do was bring some things to secure his gear better and remove the mirage drive prior to going in and paddle away. The drive is why he went sideways like that.
Mate, have a look at the stealth offshore kayaks, they have a good selections of fiberglass and plastic offshore kayaks and gear. You won't have any problem with gear again getting mest up in the surf zone.
lowkey miss some freshwater fishing boi dont get me wrong its cool watching the salt stuff but im far from the ocean an never been , ya boi need some freshwater motivation lol
You have a paddle; use it. You can use brace strokes with the paddle to stabilize yourself in the surf, steer, and even power your boat forward. Also, those hobie pedal drives are expensive AF, I'd pull the drive up and stow it, so you don't damage it surfing into the beach.

Jay Sims waders aren't dangerous unless you are a total idiot
This is a misconception. Waders dont weight more with water in them when your in the water. Lots of videos out there to prove this. Weight doesn't change. Waders dont drown people.
Nathan Hale the weight doesn’t change...that’s not at all what he meant by saying that...think. Why wear something that will impede your ability to swim? Why not a dry suit? Lighter. Warmer. Floats.
The name for them is wader. You wade in shallow water.
Sea-Money surfing

Been there….done that! Someone cured my beach landing, never ride the wave…ride the momentum right behind the wave. I’ve come in to the beach with 12’ surf on the west central coast with no problems and didn’t have a nervous breakdown afterwards!! Good fishing and tight lines without having a yard sale on the beach!
Bingo. Someone who knows his stuff.
I've got three dry boxes, and generally keep the two smaller in the larger, lashed to the boat. Even a standard tackle box or bag that's latched or zipped will keep your stuff with you when it's lashed to the boat.
I bet ocean fishing is fun again now. Right? If not, I'll make an offer on that fine Hobie kayak with the mirage peddle system.
Mightiflier,
I'll bid a whole US $dollar, ...
omg! you were in water up to your calves! how did you survive?
doesnt seem like hes the smartest tool in the shed.
U said smartest 😂
I guess it never occurred to you that things should be secured to the boat so if you capsize they won't fall out? If there was a book on kayak fishing that would be on the first page.
Well that’s a number one rule in the normal ocean kayak so you have the things to save yourself but i don’t know about fishing kayaks. Don’t really like them🤷♀️😂
You should see the breakers in northern Texas coast. You learn quick to secure your gear every time. Better then a day at work tho
It would be nice if they made a secure well on those kayaks that you could put your stuff in in case you go over. Oh wait...
" I don't wanna die " :D PERFECT timing.sorry about all your plugs dude
its all good haha I only lost a few, I have plenty more
Sea-Money Fishing glad u ok dude. Did u post the lost tackle box on sol?
Sea-Money Fishing HEY DUDES, WATCH ME TAKE THIS ONE SIDEWAYS!!
good thing you could stand up when you went over, otherwise that would've been a completely different story.
question is, why didn't he stand up before the yak went over.
Angel Cabada his fishfinder was malfunctioning, saying that it was 10 ft deep, even though it was actually 3 ft deep
Keep up the good work.
ditto i dont understand why they hating on you it would make sense if they hated on kayak fishing
Legend has it that his ordeal is not over yet.
Matthew Bronson he just panicked he knew what to do but fucked up doing it, happens to the best of us
actually because of the groves on the bottom of ocean kayaks they often do turn like that when a wave hits them from behind. It's not a like a surfboard which just goes exactly where you aim it.
@@cheesefisherman4489 exactly its not easy coming in from the surf so many haters lol
I always wanted to ask if you ever tipped over, but though it was a dumb question. I just assumed you were 100% with your kayak. In the least you recovered your rods and a few plugs. I think I saw your bucket on ebay though.
nub Fishin Lol
nub Fishin yopp
You cannot hesitate when running a surf zone, timing is everything, you have to stay on the back of the wave and not let another wave run up on your stern. And broadside is definitely not the way to do it.
Yup, timing is everything. Keep the bow headed for the shore. 🛶
I couldn't imagine capsizing that far from shore in shark infested waters and surviving it in one piece. You sir have balls the size of rasins...
So there is a paddle attached to your kayak and at the time this paddle is essential you don't use it ?
As a surfer I cringe at the lost gear when watching videos like this. We are on kayaks people!! Let the wave pass you - then follow it in while laughing at your plastic navy friends strewn across the shore line.
They will be watching in awe as the back of your wave pulls the yak along in the flowing current. Let alone if you have peddles and a paddle it is WAY easier to get in that spot the whole way to shore -depending on your conditions of course.
Hope you have lost less gear since this video.... "keep the seat side up".
"plastic navy friends" im freakin rollin
next bucket you get make sure it has a top that either snaps or screws on and has enough room to put your lure box in, hate to see that happen to anyone, I lost a bunch of tackle that way 5 years ago ( rods, lures and so forth ), sorry
thanks man that is a good call this has taught me to get some waterproof floating storage
just a good lid for your bucket will work..i feel bad for you, losing just one lure hurts
How he ever survived that 18" breaker in 9" of water had to have been divine intervention.
I use my paddle drive to gain speed while going parallel to shore. Keep an eye on the waves and one hand on the rudder. Turn into waves when needed. When I see a break I gain speed and point toward shore. Rudder up, drive out and paddle in use the paddle to keep nose at shore.
Go to Hawaii and see if you can ride those shore breaks. LOL
great idea! lol
MR. FIX-ALL INC. or Bells Beach Australia
MR. FIX-ALL INC. since were all talking stuuuuuupid...why not teapu..mavericks.....yea kook stay outa my ocean
First Name Last Name fuck u
Nahh, bigger waves in Portugal! ;)
wow you really could have avoided that if you pulled out your paddle
That's what I was thinking. Pull your paddle and do a low brace. Problem solved.
waders?! seems like a one way ticket to the bottom if they took on water and you couldn't get them off. life jacket enough to make that a good plan?
Todd Personett thats what i was saying. in Texas lot of people drowned because of that
Todd Personett that's right wade in waders & swim in wet or dry suit .guys have died close to shore in waders !
Todd Personett false.
guess the verdict is out... some claim to have busted the myth that waders increase chances of drowning others say it kills. seems proper belting and type of wader mitigates the risk. some think drowning in waders may have been more a matter of panic than the waders causing a problem. if it were me...
Man goes in kayak at sea & is surprised there are some small waves. Genius.
Nice video, it looks like a great fishing hole
Dude u weren’t perpendicular to the steez
OMG OH NO OMG A 3 FOOT WAVE OH MY GOD OH NO
This one's going to KIll us. lolllllooooooolllooollolololol
Luchace Fox he just panicked if it was deeper he could've died weighters weigh you down
WTHGaming Fuck was he wearing them for then
Peanut bunker is the best you should use it for bait
I don't know if it's an issue but what about a kid or someone stepping on the lures and getting a hook in their foot? I can see it not being an issue now that it's cold but what about the next time this happens in the summer, all because you didn't want to secure your gear.
Jim Ingram he wasn’t planning on losing them
And it will still be his fault when someone gets impaled.
Its hard to believe it been 4 years since this was posted. Happy fishing man. Love from Harlan county Kentucky.
"This one's going to kill us" then stands up in ankle deep water
bruh, you could of easily just gone straight in letting the waves carry you. too much messing around
"I don't wanna die. This one's gonna kill us"
Dude, You are only in like a foot or 2 of water -_-
Bruh he’s exaggerating chill out
@@thesuburbanfisherman2 I'm aware he is xD
dam thats so sad dude, my cousins own a bait and tackel shop, id be happy to support you with a new set of poppers man
Wow, that sucks.
I've landed in the surf a few times, the way I do it is to surf a wave in, when you get just before where they're breaking paddle back hard, get behind it and then paddle hard to keep up to it.
When it breaks in front of you ride the wash up into the shallows.
Ayuh, don't know about the pedal boats, how much speed and acceleration you have, might not be feasible.
Does this guy see near death sea experiences on youtube and then imagine he is brave for going out in 1ft surf? lmao what an actual fan boy
Come on man, those are barely visible waves just take a couple days and go out with no gear and learn how to ride those waves in. And use your damn paddle man
how come you didn't have your Paddle in your Hands
Exactly.
Hehe right on bro! all dampness aside...way better than a snowy cold day at home. Thanks for sharing your day!
basically this guy knows little or nothing about kayak surf landing technique, rookie mistake, the surf is fairly small, "I don't wana die" , in 5 inches water? that cracks me up 😂
Did you pay any attention to his sonar? It went from 6 feet to like 2 in a matter of seconds. He probably would have noticed if it wasn't for the wave on his ass. Not everyone can be perfect at ocean kayak fishing like yourself.
Adam Milan yeah but if you go out you have to be ready, for instance if he did fall in in 10 ft or somethings, he’d struggle cos he’s not wearing the right stuff, you have to have some idea on how to be safe to have fun
you can drown is 2 inches of water just letting you know
@@adammilan6434 It's not even that, it's the matter of littering a beach full of tackle with sharp hooks and stuff plus plastic that won't degrade, etc. =/ I mean losing stuff is part of fishing anyway but best not to litter when you don't have to. =(
@@NozomuYume Don't go in the ocean, because the oils on your skin will litter the ocean. I'm begging you please don't go in ever again.
Dammit dude.....I flipped a kayak in fresh water and lost my box of lures as well, really sucks.......upside your ok, be safe buddy.
When I saw him just toss everything here and there, it was an uh-oh moment. You tether your pliers, don`t you? Tether everything. That was probably $100 worth of lures.
I had that same Yak, I traded up a 12' Pro Angler after a capsize in Boston Harbor, and it is much more stable.
A great ending, you're still alive to fish another day, I too fell in and lost 35 years worth of lures at a freshwater lake filled with crazy jetskis. If you don't like big waves then do the big lakes and rivers🤷🏼♂️
Love your vid👍
Did he dieded?
Ya
I did also heard that :(
You need to fish barbless the way you are handling those fish. I`m half way through the video and all I can see next is you sinking a hook deep in your leg or hand. Let them tire out a bit before horsing them in . Keep it safe dude. Cheers.
I mean you're fishing on what equates to a 2 x 4.
You’re nuts for handling that fish and lure so wrecklessly. Seriously you’re gonna get hooked bro.
Yup, he better have his barbs pinched
Great music flows perfect with the vibe, love fishing..
“Ocean kayak fishing isn’t fun any more.” I’m thinking that’s because you’re at the Jersey Shore, Jeenyus.
Jersey shore is just fine for it.
Not from Jersey but its actually pretty great.
I'm no expert and I don't want to sound cocky but why didn't you get off your kayak and walk it in? I don't it was that deep. I'm sorry you lost some of your gears but you'll be able to fish again soon ☺️
TITLE OF NEXT VIDEO: Insane Tsunami Wave Capsizes My Yak!
What's the instrumental you used for this video? I like that hip hop beat 🙂
13:07 you almost tried to lip that blue.
why the hell was this in my recommended? lol
Did ur phone survive ?
+Rusty Guyz phone survived thankfully!
I’m no expert but I have a couple paddle boards and being parallel with big waves is never a good idea.
Some tense moments there, didn’t no if you where going survive or not, had me glued to the screen the whole time. A true fishing hero lol . He carried on like a pork chop
Catches a bunch of fish....complains. Neglects to secure his tackle....gets swamped...loses some/litters...complains.
You never hit waves sideways...hit em head on or straight from behind
Fishing kayaks tend to go under nose first. Your supposed to broach and ride the wave side on, using the paddle for balance and stability
For those saying he shouldve done this and that. All he needed to do was bring some things to secure his gear better and remove the mirage drive prior to going in and paddle away. The drive is why he went sideways like that.
Lovely fish. A paddle would work as a rudder and you could ride the waves in.
Mate, have a look at the stealth offshore kayaks, they have a good selections of fiberglass and plastic offshore kayaks and gear. You won't have any problem with gear again getting mest up in the surf zone.
Seeing as you are as unorganized and unprepared that you seem to be about everything up to that point, I wasn't at all surprised by the late events.
lowkey miss some freshwater fishing boi dont get me wrong its cool watching the salt stuff but im far from the ocean an never been , ya boi need some freshwater motivation lol
I hear ya I have neglected freshwater lately mainly because this drought we're in has all the freshwater fisheries slowwww so slow.
Your gonna need a bigger boat!
Waders and sideways to the surf. Candidate for the Darwin award.
You have a paddle; use it. You can use brace strokes with the paddle to stabilize yourself in the surf, steer, and even power your boat forward. Also, those hobie pedal drives are expensive AF, I'd pull the drive up and stow it, so you don't damage it surfing into the beach.
