Thanks for making these videos! The "orange blob" technique of getting the basic silhouette right first and then worrying about details later has helped me a ton.
I love your use of silhouettes for sprites and even architecture. I never would have thought to do that. I'm obsessed with being pixel perfect from the start, and you're right - it takes forever to resolve the artwork as a result of working with small details only. Definitely going to try this approach. Thank you for such a great tutorial!
Adam, I have been playing games since Atari.... 37 years to all you awesome young people out there lol and I spent my whole life avoiding Video Game Design to be what my parents said is "Responsible" But your videos have spawned something amazing in my life and I have been slowly learning how to make small things like doughnuts, animals etc in Aseprite. Its the best thing I've ever done and even though your not done this pub you made is so amazing! :) Thank you so much for such a great video/Pixel Art Class. Peace and One Love my friend.
All the advice you give is so helpful for any kind of art; you manage to make it very general while still getting to the point, which is something not a lot of people manage.
I remember trying to get into pixel art about 3 or 4 years ago. Back then, I couldn't watch long art videos (I preferred speedart). I know, I know, shame on me. I wanted to see everything quickly, fast, immediately! I recently came back to making some art, and now I can't get enough of those videos. Seeing the entire process and listening to how the artist thinks about every detail of the art, seeing how they correct things, how they try different approaches to a problem, the tips that they give -there's nothing like it. It is amazing! Thank you for everything!
I love how you show how much work goes into creating this and the process. It made me feel so much better that I was “slow”, in these times, all we ever see is the result so, really great content, love this.
I was looking for something like this, I was thinking about starting trying backgrounds and buildings but I had no idea if I should just open a blank canvas and start drawing or how to go about starting the process, this helped a lot! And the style you have is amazing too, can't wait for the next ones!
8:10 is such an importance piece of advice, I don't want count the many hours I wasted in the sketching phase getting the shape 'perfect' only to change it later on anyway. Very important for a good workflow.
Ha, I just finished binge watching all your videos yesterday! Glad to see you're still at it. Getting the scale of the buildings right is my biggest hurdle rn.
I'm A LOVER of pixel art, so much that I wanted to see the process of how it's even created. and I must say that your video is a great example, so satisfying and professional... keep up the good work man
I love how informative and helpful this video is even tho im 2 years late to see it. You touched upon exactly the issues ive been facing in pixel art, and discussed and showed how to navigate thru those issues. Thank you so much!
honestly I'm always so impressed when you show Insignia's work, those buildings are so so great. I wanna live inside the game. am I ever gonna be able to do that in pixelart omg
I know this video is three years old but I just wanted to say that absolutely love your pixel art content 🤎 You’re a great instructor and an adorable person!
Yeah, we have those cellar booze delivery points here in England. In fact, I'm pretty sure that I recognise the place seen in that pic. I'm 99% sure that's The Three Fishes pub in Shrewsbury.
I've been watching through a lot of your stuff lately to help me on my pixel art journey and this concept you've been using of sketching out a block shadow first has helped SO MUCH. I'm an amateur in art overall but when I'd been drawing in CSP and sketch books, I'd always drawn lined sketches, and when trying to transfer that idea over to pixels it just wasn't working. Everything looked ugly and I couldn't get shapes riught with a 1px brush. Working with blocks of shapes has been so much easier for me to process that I might transfer that back over to other art too. Your art style, especially for this game, has been inspiring too. I was feeling a little defeated with seeing quite a lot of pxiel art being so intricate and using dithering etc, as my preferred art is about big, blocky colours, and you seem to be hitting that sweet spot soooooo well of detail, but in could clumps of colours instead of lots of single pixel dithering.
That lesson r.e. selective detail inside mostly flat space is one that I keep learning. Every time I think I've learned it, I find six months later my style has shifted to be even more selective. Maximising this skill is the only way I'll be able to output the volume of art required for my game at the canvas scale I'm using.
@@AdamCYounis I love it! I saw your video showing some of your first backgrounds and how busy they were compared to where you were at years later. There was so much improvement in focusing on the parts that matter. My own work is still in the stage of wedges of colour, but watching you is helping me understand where I should be focusing on improving in the first instances , and also how to suggest concepts without a lot of single pixels. I'm also trying to use very limited pallettes (5 to 10ish colours) atm to really force myself to work within parameters.
I really enjoy this. One little change to the tavern sign would be to change the jug to a shoe jug, like a shoe with a mug handle. Keep up the good work :)
The beauty of drawing on the computer with tools is that you can change anything pretty easy with tools. I am learning about pixel art with aseprite and think as of right now, it would take me longer with your process then to simply start drawing the building especially since you already have a stretch. To me all those blobs of solid colors would be distracting then just to simply pencil the sketch in first and go from there. Probably just my inexperience talking though.
Loved this tutorial! Most pixel art tutorials are very ‘in the box’ so to speak. I really liked the techniques you used to give the building more character and fluidity! Excited for part two. :)
thank you so much for all of your videos, i'm currently working on my first project so i need tons of advice and help, and your videos are the most helpful! thanks! c:
Thank you sooooooo much for this video, I noticed the brick texture in one of the streams but I could never find it again and I really need to know it for something I’m working on since I could never get it right. This is so helpful, thank you!
Id love to see tutorials on handling architecture perspective like im struggling with doing overhangs. I am trying to do an animal skin overhang look to a front door and its been a nightmare to get it to look right
at the end of the video you say: am I on the right track? and im like; I wish i could do this (ofc, otherwise i wouldnt be watching) it is very helpfull. Question tho; Is there also a video about aseprite shortcuts and such? I see you using so many shortcuts/tools i dont even knew existed. but yeah. im brand new to this :)
Hey Adam! What app did you use in the beggining of the video where you gathered reference images, drew architecture details, etc. It looks perfects for what I'm looking for some personal work. Thanks for all these really inspiring videos! Good luck in your projects ;)
Can I just ask out of curiosity what is the name of the app that you use for reference material? The one where you can draw on it and have all your photos on as reference points?

How do you draw around the border of lines and not go over it? I see you have some kind of function preventing it allowing for very smooth painting. Please help someone
About the research phase, how fast you usually do it? Do you just grab-n-draw or do you took some time for in-depth research of cultural/purpose significance of the architecture?
The move tool (v) can be used to select layers by clicking the canvas. So I just tap on the thing I want to edit, rather than trying to remember the layers.
Your content is completely on another level, the workflow, the depth, I don't know.... a joy to the eye.
The quality of content is what you would only expect from a paid course or subscription program. But he give it away for free, maximum respect.

The program he is using is Aseprite and Leonardo App

Trick used @21:04 seems great and not all beginners know to do this (including me.) Shading tool between 2 different colors for "ease of drawing."
Yo, this is crazy, I might have to use this in my game, I don't have the same view in my game, but ill definitely use some of these tips.
I'm A LOVER of pixel art, so much that I wanted to see the process of how it's even created.

pixel art is like the michael scott meme: I am going to make this way harder than it needs to be
I love how informative and helpful this video is even tho im 2 years late to see it.
You touched upon exactly the issues ive been facing in pixel art, and discussed and showed how to navigate thru those issues.
Thank you so much!
Man, your classes are so insane! It's absolutely helpful and useful! You're amazing!
Dude you taught me so much. Finally I know where I will start from. 🥴 I know I've got talent for drawing. But I had no knowledge. Now this changes
I have searched so many styles in drawing pixel art which are nice but this is the only one that really worked for me.
That's super nice of you to say, I'm glad I could help!
honestly I'm always so impressed when you show Insignia's work, those buildings are so so great. I wanna live inside the game. am I ever gonna be able to do that in pixelart omg
You're an amazing artist. If your gameplay and plot is as good as your drawings this game will be awesome.
you are definitely the best youtuber specialized in pixel art. And I just want to tell you that I admire you
You're too kind. Thank you for saying something so nice, I'll do my best to live up to it.
:p i love it when you said were gonna come back later and make it PIXEL perfect
ur an amazing teacher!!! always so impressed by not only ur techniques, but ur ability to explain why you do what you do :D
Started with Pixel art and such programs with your videos, and it motivates me a lot. So, thank you ;)
I know this video is three years old but I just wanted to say that absolutely love your pixel art content 🤎
You’re a great instructor and an adorable person!
So glad you posted another video after a long time.....Very good tutorials man
How the hell is this content free??? Thanks!!!! 😍🤩
Watching and learning well in Korea. Thank you for the good video.
what is the program that you use to drawing
This dude is the Bob Ross of Pixel Art.
Yeah, we have those cellar booze delivery points here in England. In fact, I'm pretty sure that I recognise the place seen in that pic. I'm 99% sure that's The Three Fishes pub in Shrewsbury.
I just want to say, you explain stuff so well. Keep up the grate work!

Fantastic. You teach me more then my drawing teacher when I used to study.
I really enjoy this. One little change to the tavern sign would be to change the jug to a shoe jug, like a shoe with a mug handle. Keep up the good work :)
You sir are multiple types of awesome!
Great stuff. For a newbie like me with little art skill you are almost too good to get a lot out of but still very entertaining.
OH MY GOD, I was watching this stream when you were doing the tutorial.

Excellent video; good, clear, train of thought.

Bruh why do you look like gigachad

whats the app he is using like a board, with images and sketching?
best teacher I ever had
Maybe call it the Mochas-Inn, as a reference to Moccasins (the shoe-wear) and that they sell the best Mocha in town.
thank you adam
Loved the iterative approach... subscribed!
Well, this was an interesting video. Your video topics are always intriguing!!!
showing Irish pubs and not showing Paddy's pub of IASIP was a war crime.
Thanks for all your lovely content. You are a great inspiration for motivation and endurance!
Very nicely done.

NICE :D I really need this tutorial
Thanks Adam!!!

Omg that's in so much details 😍
Keep up the marvelous work!
Nice work!!
Giving away so many great tips! This is great!

You don't know how much I've missed these. I can never catch you on twitch due to timezones. How did the commission thing go? You done with it?
The commission went well, all finished now! I'll share what I can when it's released :)
This is just amazing
Welcome Back!
Hi, I really love your videos! Can you please advise what is the color palette you are using for this picture? Thanks
Hey Adam! What app did you use in the beggining of the video where you gathered reference images, drew architecture details, etc. It looks perfects for what I'm looking for some personal work.
Thanks for all these really inspiring videos! Good luck in your projects ;)
Hah, shoe inn! Very clever
what software do you use to make the art and animations?
Can I just ask out of curiosity what is the name of the app that you use for reference material? The one where you can draw on it and have all your photos on as reference points?
Hi could you tell me what the name of the reference drawing software is? 00:55
How do you setup your palette? Is it from one of the presets or do you make it yourself?
wooooow, so cool!
i really love this house reference you used, i searched a lot found some on anime SAO but didn't found exactly what i wished...found here now.
So thank you i am starting today to make the enviroment for my game rpg and it come in hand but i want to change a bit as the houses need to be more scotissh like...
Do you have more videos about scenario?
Amazing
Oh after long time.
please do more!!!!! soooo good
Wait, the porotagonists name is Armin?! whelp I have to buy the game now.
That's right! "Armin Black" is his name.
what is your palette
Thanks a lot for the video
Shoo-in... Shoe inn
Are you drawing with the mouse ?
what is your reference software, it looks infinant where you can draw and add photos? this would be awesome to use
thanks :) that was helpful
What pallet are you using, I like it and I'd like to know if I could use it.
Love it
Is that palette from Aesprite or did you make it yourself? It's so good and organized.
please make a tutorial, about scriptables from your games...i see in your unity's window...please
I have no Idea how you could keep track of all the unnamed layers- I would never be able to do anything like this :D
The move tool (v) can be used to select layers by clicking the canvas. So I just tap on the thing I want to edit, rather than trying to remember the layers.
Quick Question allthough to everyone, how do i change the default farb palette to the one showed in the video?
I don't find any solution :/
Just wanted to ask...
what asset one should work on first in order to make an indie game.... is it the Player Model, or environment ?
When you make pixel art it more or less looks me like you are just doing normal drawing and then touching it up🤔
For larger canvases, that's right.
Masterfull 👌
Please I’m new I don’t understand how you use some of the tools you use and the canvas size you’re using
How do you use the brush so that it only colours within the existing shape?
What software is that ? It isn't photoshop is it?
Aesprite and Leonardo
i am new to pixel art and this channel is there a way to get your pallete?
Subbed
Ur so awesome!!! I have no money but if I had it would go to your patreon
