I couldn't get in the boot of the car lol. Must have spent 30mins on it. Glad you did this for her. Holly is a lovely person and all the best to her and brother. cheers
Not normally a BMW superfan but you can't deny that is a fantastic-looking car with a timeless body design. Enjoyed the wheel-freeing mini-montage around 14:55 too!
It reminds me of the tv show Moonlighting with Bruce Willis and Sybil Shepard, they drove this era BMWs and I’m sure one of them had the 6 series coupé.
@@BeanoMark makes me think of the bad guy with an artificial hand from Innerspace. Or the 70s throw back looking guy in Belfast who drives a red one like a complete knob.
Some clarification about the Penta wheels. There were several companies that made wheels in that style but only one company was called Penta, and they were based in the UK. Their wheels were called "Penta P1680/P1690" (80 = 8j, 90= 9j wide). The German wheels were made by ATS and were called "ATS AMG 5 Spokes". I've spent ages on forums trying to figure out who made them first, some people say that AMG asked Penta to make wheels due to increased demand, others said Penta copied the design on the Mercedes C111 prototype and that AMG asked ATS to make a version based on those. Either way, everyone started refering to all these different wheels as Pentas despite only the British ones having that name. The only difference between the two is that the spokes on the AMG wheels are slightly shorter with a thicker lip than the Pentas. Like I said, several other companies made versions of these wheels but people generally agree that the ones to have are either the genuine AMG wheels or the British made wheels that are actually called Pentas.
Couple years ago I bought 628 in dolphin grey with similar bodykit on those ATSes (probably not Pentas as it was on continent and car was LHD). so maybe that was some sort factory option?
Excellent work Jonny and BMW Tony! It'd be great to follow the stories of some of these barn find cars after they're sold and fixed up. Like a barn finds revisited special maybe?...
Jamie, thank you! Rest assured we have begun planning Barn Find Follow-ups (think Grand Designs Revisited), as like you so many folks want to know what happened next...
Paul Bracq was also the designer for Mercedes in the 60's, like the Pagoda SL (W113). He was an absolute genius, when you see he could design cars so different, but equally gorgeous.
When i drive my 1986 635 csi, people always stop me and ask about the car, usually on petrol forecourts. A lady stopped in front of my driveway as i was backing onto my drive she was driving past, rolled down her window and said that a lovely car. Great video 👍🏻😀
That was far easier of a re-enlivening of an old BMW than I would have thought it would be. It acted more like a car sitting for 5 years than 20 plus years. Please do a follow up on the car when it gets sold and cleaned up and driven. Thanks Jonny and Tony BMW for saving a Shark.
I was born not too far from the North Pole, and it can get very cold there, especially earlier. There had been a long cold spell, with below -40 for over a fortnight, then forty years ago. I was going to pick up a Volvo 343, yes, one with a CVT gearbox, and drive it 120 miles. But how to start it. No engine heater, nothing. I turned off everything that could possibly use electricity before trying. Started after the third attempt. No problem, and none of today's electric cars would have been able to do it. It's always exciting to start cars in the cold, or that haven't been driven for a very long time, that's why it's so exciting to see this series, if you get a start.
Old fuel works much better than you’re led to believe. I’ve been away & I’d fuelled my 1977 bikes up before leaving & putting into storage. 15 months later, fuel turned onto prime, kicked it over and started & ran perfectly, idling down off choke as if ridden yesterday, not 2021.
I wish Jonny would do a return to the cars he doesn’t get started when they are eventually running where possible so we can see them in running order also you could try tracing the new owners if there sold or go back to the original owners if they keep it when they are restored so we can see them in all there glory especially the Audi qautro but I understand you did do this with the escort that had done 900 miles from new and was sat with the lady who owned it as she took it over 1000 miles I watched that and it was a brilliant edition of the late brake show. Also I wish this could go on main steam tv and you make a Tv series out of it but otherwise keep doing what you do as I absolutely love it as it’s a welcome release from my terminal cancer as it takes my mind of it just for a short while so thanks Jonny ❤️
Just wonderful. She lives and sounds great after all those years. It would be amazing to see this car bought and restored to it's former glory. What a series that would be. In 1986 my friend's Dad had a 635 CSI and i was lucky enough to go in the back a few times from Bradford to Ilkley over the moor road. To me as a 13 year old lad it was like a spaceship. Lovely lovely cars, and I'm a BMW nut to this day.
Another excellent Barn find from my favourite motoring journalist. This one is particular special for me as I had a BMW 735i back in 1983. Always, fancied a 635CSI but never got one... Love to have a nice restored one today..
Brought back memories of my s/h 1986 635csi. Lovely car and big luxury on a budget. Sold it for what I paid for it after putting a further 120k miles on it. Best looking nose on a car. JS hopping and spitting E5 made the video. You can't make that up enthusiasm up.
Thank you very much Jonny. Doing what i always dream to but never been able to do. I discover your videos during my recovery after a cardiac arrest last year. Your barn finds are great and were able to keep a smile in my face after several health and family problems. Again, thank you.
Honestly I thought this was going to be another non-runner video, especially with the immobiliser! How wrong was I! Hopefully the late previous owners legacy can be resurrected with a new owner. Hats off to both of you for getting it running and moving! Certainly made my enjoyment of a few glasses of red better!
Had a couple of 635s back in the day. Engines pretty much bombproof but rust was the issue. Some electrical gremlins. This was the age of BMW that gave them their good reputation.
I'm not a BMW guy but thats a great looking car. So Gangster. How cool is Tony BMW. Great shout on the fuel pump wiring Jonny You two should have gone down the Pub in it to celebrate 🍻

I'm fortunate enough to have two of these cars, one a 635CSi and the other a 628CSi as well as a 745i turbo, all from the 80's. They are gorgeous cars.
Thank god for youtube 🙏 the interwebs, these barn finds are awesome 👌 Imagine all the barn finds that have been before and never been recorded and documented. So many finds, keep your hard work up please
Holy cow is that ever a nice looking Beemer! My first and only BMW is an x1 28i xdrive. Still driving it and I love it... but man, I'd love to own a Beemer like this one.
Of all Late Brake Show content, barn finds have to be the best, and this is one of the best of them! Absolutely stunning vehicle and amazing to see the resilience of the engine after so long. Hilarious to think there are people out there, oblivious to how interested folks would be in this! 😂
Great find! My first E24 was a 85 635Csi (US model) I was looking for an E28 but when I test drove the E24 I had to have it. This was 10+ years ago while they were still cheap. I later had to sell that car to pay for a move but I since purchased an 81 (E12 based) 633Csi and although the 635 was certainly more lively I prefer the simplicity and style of the early car. It bridges the gap to the E9 quite well actually. You can see a couple of shorts with my E24 on my channel.
Reminded me of a 635 CSi my dad had back in the end of the 80ies, that back seat really tucked you in as a kid, but not in very cosy way as it was pretty firm. I can to this day remember the sound of that engine, those big sixes sound really nice! 😊
A good mate of my fathers had a 635 CSI in the early 80's, brown IIRC. The reg was 'CSI 635'; 'SI' was the Dublin City and County code, and 'C' was the year-he held out for 635 part. I remember being amazed by it, my old man had a Renault 25 around then-a tasty enough car at the time, but the BMW was in another league.
What a car! I remember seeing this shape 6 series alot and now to see this 628 csi with the M Sport parts too was a flashback. Not seen one in like this in years, and to watch it being driven back into the garage at the end was really nice to see!
I think you must have filmed the interior part after the battery was installed since the overhead dome light and immobilizer light were illuminated. I was thinking the battery can't still be good and then you open the hood and install the battery. LOL Great episode!
Jonny & BMW Pete saving old BM's wherever they are, fantastic story, great ending, sad about the owner, would have enjoyed seeing it drive down the road, Rj in Oz
That was great Jonny, so satisfying to watch. It’s all so natural and engaging it feels like you’re there in person watching. Love it. This channel gets better and better, well done you.
Had a 1981 635csi back in the eighties. It was gold with tan leather and in lovely condition. Don't I wish I still had it, but have had around 10 cars since then, so it's a distant memory. Great to see this 628 running . What a result for you great guys.
Love the show, love the car. Going by the reg plate and rear window decal it was sold at the garage I worked for in the 80’s. Mill BMW in Sunderland. I worked at the Mercedes branch. Keep up the barn finds. Very entertaining. Thanks.
The 6 series is on my list when I move house and finally get a garage! I’ve loved the design since I first saw one as a kid but my dad got a red e30 325i instead which provided many happy memories. Another great video Johnny, TonyBMW knowledge is awesome to behold! Keep up the great work and can’t wait for next one!
Such an extremely well done series!!!! Absolutely love these episodes and all of the history that is provided for each vehicle/scenario. Hope for many many more in the future. Thank you for all of your hard work and it's greatly appreciated!!!!
@@TheLateBrakeShow Next time go and get your fuel from an Esso. as long as you're not in the way far flung parts of the UK Esso premium fuel has no ethanol in it. (I'm in no way affiliated with Esso, I just know it's the only zero ethanol fuel you can still get)
Just got to the whack the starter motor with a metal pole - memories flooding back how many broken cars we started in the 80’s/90’s just by thumping the stater motor with a metal pole! Tesla owners read and weep!
Did anyone notice the Garage back door slammed shut by itself @11:25 , I didn't notice it was windy in the video barn find when they were working on back offside wheel, just maybe Pete paid them a visit to watch his old pride & joy being worked on and running again, I think Pete would certainly have approved.
I had an '84 633 CSi American version. I loved that car. Great highway cruiser for long trips. I would get 26 MPG at 75-80 MPH all day long. Over 100MPH it was very smooth and stable. I sold it with 240 K miles and it was still running great.
Love this; the 6 series was my favourite (always hankered after a 635) when they emerged in the 70s, and I've remained a fan. Lovely to see the old girl still has life in her after all those miles and an extended stay in the garage. Quality.
I absolutely LOVE stuff like this - thank you so much for putting it online. There's such a great intersection between mechanical problem solving and old BMWs that just does it for me.
Collaboration with fellow creators is what gives great content like this that sheeple tv can not match. Definately needs a what happens next follow up 😎
Having a nice wee daydream here about purring along in a perfectly restored old 635 coupe. It's sunny in the countryside and I'm not hurrying. Oh, my wife's been restored as well by the look...nice Thanks Johnny.!
What I love about your content, is there is no gimmick or schtick. Your not like Demuro or Hoovie. Just shows if you have the content and delivery the rest will follow. Kia Kaha (stay strong) from New Zealand
Great stuff Jonny and where would you be without Tony ! So how did you find this if the daughter had no idea who you are ? It actually looks very saveable . Well done ! Cripes and it runs !
The supercar of that era, was the Alpina B7 (1978-1982) with a turbo and 300 hp from the 630 engine. Later it got 330 hp from the 635. 0-62 mph in 6.8.
When I was stationed in Germany in 1998 I looked at a 325i and right next to it was a beautiful 6 series. One of the coolest BMW's ever made. I didn't buy the 325i and have always regretted it.
Details of this car are on the DVLA site: Vehicle make - BMW Date of first registration - January 1984 Year of manufacture - 1984 Cylinder capacity - 2788 cc Date of last V5C (logbook) issued - 16 July 2001
Hey DIY mechanics, don't hit brake calipers with a steel hammer, because you can easily deform the piston bore and permanently seize the caliper. Instead hit on a piece of wood to protect the caliper.
Very enjoyable episode and so pleasing when Jonny and co get a car running - TonyBMW a calm and safe pair of hands - Jonny, you do have a fire extinguisher with you at all times ?....... ! more of the same please !
I just looked at an e21 this morning and i’m in the process of buying a 1983 633csi same color as this one. Love the Penta wheels❤ Tony BMW may be my long lost pop😂
Dream car BMW 635 CSI. I was posted to Germany in 1980. Couldn't afford the 6 but saved for the 323i. LINCOLN BMW allowed me to sit in a BMW 635 CSI in the same colour as the barn find car. In the showroom at Rheindahlen , the BMW salesman was so derogatory to me that I walked across the floor to the Audi stand and bought the showroom model. Audi 80 GLE in triple blue. Electric Ariel , alloy wheels, 2 rear fogs, tinted glass all round and 1000 DM worth of sound system. Price 18000 DM = £4050. Beautiful car. Long range 5th gear . 50MPG. Happy days. The BMW 323i base cost was around 23000DM.
What a great find and great film. I always wanted a 635csi ( my dads mate used to race them when new). Sadly I only ever managed a 628 csi - still love how these cars look they make most current bmw models look like a design disaster! So glad this one didn’t have those naff 90’s chrome wheel arch covers - a sure sign of being mistreated .
I was bitten twice by the BMW bug. I was in Pretoria Technikon in 2002, South Africa, and i lived in Res. There was a man who lived near the Res and he drove a black E28 M5 with a cream interior. It looked good and sounded great, he took care of it. On the way to town, from the Res, there was a scrapyard that had yellow 635 CSi and I was enthralled since then. It's been my dream to own either one... or both.

I remember being amazed by it, my old man had a Renault 25 around then-a tasty enough car at the time, but the BMW was in another league.
That was definitely a cool reg - not so sure about the brown tho lol
Noticed exactly the same
Jonny & BMW Pete saving old BM's wherever they are, fantastic story, great ending, sad about the owner, would have enjoyed seeing it drive down the road, Rj in Oz
That was great Jonny, so satisfying to watch. It’s all so natural and engaging it feels like you’re there in person watching. Love it. This channel gets better and better, well done you.
Another Brilliant Video Johnny, well done to you and TonyBMW for getting this Beemer started, I really do enjoy these barnfind Videos.
Another great video and good to see Tony BMW back again - he has an encyclopaedic knowledge on these BMs, great to watch!
Thanks.
And another great barn find from Jonny, with his Mr BMW friend. I just love these videos. Well done the pair of you.
Tony BMW is one of my favorite side characters in your show.
Such an extremely well done series!!!! Absolutely love these episodes and all of the history that is provided for each vehicle/scenario. Hope for many many more in the future. Thank you for all of your hard work and it's greatly appreciated!!!!
The 628csi was the least e24 produced so technically pretty rare , the fact it has Motorsport bumpers also very rare .
Love the barn find series. Jonny and Tony is such a good duo. I really enjoyed this episode.
Cheers Lukas
Awesome vid! Great to have TonyBMW alongside, he is a legend and master of BMW restorations!
That 6 series is one of the coolest designs ever. Amazing it run on its own fuel.
Preferred the old fuel to the brand new E10. That's telling...
@@TheLateBrakeShow Next time go and get your fuel from an Esso. as long as you're not in the way far flung parts of the UK Esso premium fuel has no ethanol in it.
(I'm in no way affiliated with Esso, I just know it's the only zero ethanol fuel you can still get)
@@ChuckFickens1972 Unfortunately not available in Northern England. E5 99 octane is the best we can get here.
@@stephenholland5930 So even the fuel companies know that northern cars can handle their alcohol better than my southern wuss of a car 🤣🤣
Just got to the whack the starter motor with a metal pole - memories flooding back how many broken cars we started in the 80’s/90’s just by thumping the stater motor with a metal pole! Tesla owners read and weep!
That was incredible how smooth it sounded when it first turned over for twenty years!
Another amazing start up well done 🎉🎉
Jonny, Tony BMW and Tony BMW’s Little can of hope I Salute you all! ✌️
Amazing work Jonny and Tony 👍
Did anyone notice the Garage back door slammed shut by itself @11:25 , I didn't notice it was windy in the video barn find when they were working on back offside wheel, just maybe Pete paid them a visit to watch his old pride & joy being worked on and running again, I think Pete would certainly have approved.
I actually checked the comments to see if anyone else caught that. I would go with your explanation.👻
@@shaheersl Did the same. :-D
I had an '84 633 CSi American version. I loved that car. Great highway cruiser for long trips. I would get 26 MPG at 75-80 MPH all day long. Over 100MPH it was very smooth and stable. I sold it with 240 K miles and it was still running great.
Johnny needs to buy this car. It's a amazing classic and will only go up in value
I’d be bankrupt trying to keep them all.
@@drifterdave01 but that is a very rare car. And it's amazing to drive. But i also very much get your point
@@adriaanserrao2016 that much smoke and a misfire suggests oil control rings
that BMW straight six noise, literally brings tears to my eyes. absolutely an amazing find
My sympathies to the late owner's family.
Wonderful find. Sure it'll find a nice home. 'Nother great barn find, I love these.
Cheers
Love this; the 6 series was my favourite (always hankered after a 635) when they emerged in the 70s, and I've remained a fan. Lovely to see the old girl still has life in her after all those miles and an extended stay in the garage. Quality.
Sad the owner couldn’t be there 😊
I absolutely LOVE stuff like this - thank you so much for putting it online.
Oh, my wife's been restored as well by the look...nice
Thanks Johnny.!
Always liked these. Hope someone films its journey back to the road.
A Barn Find Revisited series would be brilliant...🎩
It is on the cards. 👍🏽
Brilliant video, when they come to life it leaves a very warm feeling.
The reason Jonny stays so lithe is to get his leg over the front of wedged in barnfinds to pump up their tyres 😂
What I love about your content, is there is no gimmick or schtick. Your not like Demuro or Hoovie. Just shows if you have the content and delivery the rest will follow. Kia Kaha (stay strong) from New Zealand
Craig, we thank you. Welcome aboard TLBS.
Great stuff Jonny and where would you be without Tony ! So how did you find this if the daughter had no idea who you are ? It actually looks very saveable . Well done ! Cripes and it runs !
Awesome video....unbelievable result getting it running on its own systems.
I'd be desperate to clean that car
Hard to kill these old Beemers, shame you can't say that about the modern ones. Loved every second of this video though.
The supercar of that era, was the Alpina B7 (1978-1982) with a turbo and 300 hp from the 630 engine. Later it got 330 hp from the 635. 0-62 mph in 6.8.
And that, BMW, is the correct size for a front grill 😊
Absolutely!

When I was stationed in Germany in 1998 I looked at a 325i and right next to it was a beautiful 6 series. One of the coolest BMW's ever made. I didn't buy the 325i and have always regretted it.
Details of this car are on the DVLA site:
Vehicle make - BMW
Date of first registration - January 1984
Year of manufacture - 1984
Cylinder capacity - 2788 cc
Date of last V5C (logbook) issued - 16 July 2001
That was ACE> More double trouble with Tony an Johnny please!
Hey DIY mechanics, don't hit brake calipers with a steel hammer, because you can easily deform the piston bore and permanently seize the caliper. Instead hit on a piece of wood to protect the caliper.
Fair play. I didn't think she would run. Well done 👍
Excellent Johnny and BMW man!!
Tony BMW!
This has quickly become one of my favorite automotive UA-cam channels. Thank you for the great content.
Absolute pleasure. Cheers for enjoying the channel.
Jonny is the man! Well done figuring the starting problem out. At least you both got it to run a bit. Another nice find!
Did you watch until right at the end?
Very enjoyable episode and so pleasing when Jonny and co get a car running - TonyBMW a calm and safe pair of hands - Jonny, you do have a fire extinguisher with you at all times ?....... ! more of the same please !
Thank you! Sunday evening and another edition of Barn Finds. Absolutely superb viewing with brilliant content 👍
Gives me the fizz...well done you two. Love the old BMWs.
So cool to see you and Tony working on another barn find.
It's been my dream to own either one... or both.
Love those 80s BMWs! My dad had a new 635i, Bronzit, and I learned to drive a manual on that car.
I actually have a Bronzit 635 manual I’m trying to trace its history any idea of the reg car came from Ruislip
