- Barn Find rare 70s BMW CS Coupe survivor car untouched for 38 years - will it run? Jonny Smith heads to the picture postcard seaside village of Saundersfoot in Wales to meet a charming chap who bought a 1970 BMW 2800 CS coupe (aka the E9 model, what went on to become the 3.0 CSL and Batmobile on the race tracks) and drove it no more than a year before putting it into storage. That was 38 years ago.

I'm proud to say I was the instigator of this episode. I've know Gor for 4 yrs and he'd told me about this car he had in his garage. Last year I finally got to see it and as soon as the door opened I thought ......Jonny Late brake show.. I'm so glad Tony BMW and Jonny got it going again after so long and reading all the wonderful comments has made it all so worth while. Totally agree as the owner of a M235i Gran Coupe 21 plate. Its a great driving car but BMW have been systematically beating their recent cars with the ugly stick and my Gran Coupe looks OK from the rear but definitely has ugly stick pretensions elsewhere.

BMW do make nice cars it’s just called nostalgia everyone always thinks the past was better but in 50 the same will be said about M3 CSL etc
And I think 2002’s were part of a few companies fleets in Germany in the 70’s I could bet
When he said £400 I was terrified that it was going to be the 1 that I missed out on for £375 in 1985. That 1 was white with Martini stripes, the lad took me out in it and absolutely horsed it, I'll never forget his words: "some tool isn't it?"
It certainly was, we agreed on 375 and I went to get the money from my Mam, when I finally got back to him the next day someone had gazumped me with 400. I'm still not over it

Its cars. And its being nerdy about cars. That's why. There isn't some air-headed, low-stakes drama going on like Love Island.
Gor seems like quite the character. He obviously loves his E9 - evident in his finding a garage for it as a priority. Even though he hasn't been able to recommission it for the road over the years, it seems like he's made a concerted effort to prevent it deteriorating any further. It was lovely to see the condition of the engine bay, boot, and interior. I'm sure his diligence paid off with how easily that engine turned over and struck up once Jonny and Tony gave it the once-over. Another great barn find video, and one I particularly hope comes back to the channel with a happy update in the future!
Thank you so much for this comment. We are working to help steer Gor to find the right company who will recommission it in the way he can afford and then use it, probably with tatty paint as-is. We think Gor got quite emotional during the day, and realised he ought to get this beautiful car on the road before he's too old.

OMG,. I'm a BMW lover I'm lucky enough to own five at present. Three vintage and two daily e60s.

In the 70s my dad was in the army and we lived in Germany I was 5 or 6,a German neighbour had a bright red one in a lockup under our flats,I'd sit for age's looking at it and helped wash it,it was that front end,on my top 5 cars to own and it has to be bright red,excellent video.
What a amazing discovery the owner has stored this vehicle with so much love hopefully he gets to use it soon

My father had 2 E9 BMW's in the early 80s, a 3.0 CSI and a 3.0 CSL, I wish he'd kept them as they are worth a lot of money now.
Johnny crowd fund this car to get it restored, it is beautiful, crazy as it seems I love the colour too. Worked at Dick Lovett Swindon 1979 and these cars and the 4 door versions came in for servicing, so remember them well, don't remember this colour tho😊

I had a beautiful E30 320ise 2 door in black 20 years ago, before it got nicked. So miss that car.

so do I, we all had so much fun on the day, I think both Jonny and TonyBMW would agree with your comments above, and would be delighted to come back to sunny Saundersfoot to shoot an update, at some point in the future.
Structural repairs do take time, so we must all be patient, and I’m almost certain more rust will be discovered once the bodywork specialists can get her up on the ramps for a full inspection, and perhaps even more when they start cutting her open.
Meanwhile it seems there’s a very good chance that another of my favourite UA-cam channels, Yorkshire Car restoration, might be interested in featuring my e9 with an episode covering specific details of the welding and fabrication processes involved, so you might want to keep checking this space for any further updates.
😂 haha, no worries and no pressure, I’m living the beach life here in sunny Saundersfoot, and surprisingly enough I’m actually quite capable of getting very good results with my projects, (which I never like to rush). I would much rather wait until I can have the repairs done properly or they won’t be done at all, whilst I’m her caretaker.
This will be my biggest project to date, it’s certainly the longest I will ever take on in this lifetime.
Now that these incredible guys have found my e9 the project has come back to life I can begin in earnest, and my plans to resurrect sleeping beauty may well have a happy ending after all.

A dream car. I absolutely love early 70s BMWs.
Great presentation, and superb to see the start of another E9 being brought back to the road. In 2008 we bought a 3.0csi, awesome car to drive, cruises along well, and can still hustle through the corners. Such an elegant profile, with the windows down, always brings a smile to the face!

Colorado orange! A rare colour for a CS, even a 2800. These were a sort of half breed - the 2000 drum brake rear axle but the E3 engine with the 32/36 Solex INAT carbs, 3HP20 automatic.......the good old days!

I bought a 2002 i when i was seventeen, drove it 5 mins into town to get the insurance and got side swioed by a truck, right off, no insurance, gutted, always regretted that, but, yiung and stupid!.

It's a real shame that this car doesn't have a grill about 20 times bigger than the original classic, said no one ever. Just a beautiful car. I hope you revisit this in a year or two to drive it and chat about the restoration that cost £450
haha yep, new Beemers are designed for crass Chinese tastes in mind. Hopefully now that China's economy is in permanent freefall with Western manufacturers leaving in droves the Chinese market will stop having such a horrible influence on car designs.
Another fantastic barn find episode, thanks Jonny for creating these. I envy Gor because he can actually say: “I had one of those years ago … and kept it”. If he hasn’t the means to do a sympathetic restoration I’d happily contribute a quid or two to see Gor enjoy the end result in a catch-up episode.
He's a top bloke and one of my best mates. If I had some spare cash I'd do the same as it would be lovely to see it on the road. Maybe we could set up a gofund me for him. Not sure how to do it though ..

Let’s hope I can muster the necessary funds.
Jonny and his Late Brake team have many professional contacts, and they are currently talking to various metal fabrication specialists who may be willing to provide quotes on the cost of the necessary repairs to the structural integrity of the car,
obviously it would first need to be hauled away to a bodyshop for a closer inspection of the suspect areas.
It really would be great to see how this project develops in a future episode.

As an apprentice in 1981 - my garage had an immaculate - rust free - pristine - 3.0CSA White/Blue roof/ blue velour seats for sale - £4200 - My job was to prep and polish it. Loved the car - got bought by a local publican who wrote it off within days. i was sick - loved the car. Love the show thanks Jonny

I worked in a Datsun-BMW dealer in 1972 and I fell in love with the CS coupe’s. Wonderful driving cars. Comfortable,nimble and quick. One of the all time best looking BMW’s of all time.

Just snooped on the German E9 forum. Only 10 Csi models were painted in colorado orange, 7 of them were delivered to Germany. 🤓 Rare bird... 😁 Now I miss my E12 528i. 😢
This was wonderful, i think if it can be made tidy and road legal and just use it, no need for a full on resto. Definitely a keeper. And what a nice place Saundersfoot is.
It can definitely be mildly renovated and used as a tatty, but mechanically (structurally) sound classic. That's the aim.
The unfortunate reality is it's going to sit in that garage for the next x years while it continues to rot. Hopefully the owner will see sense and sell it on to someone who will restore it and use it again.
If the owner wants to keep the car and use it I'd love the opportunity to help out with some welding to get this back on the road!
@@TheLateBrakeShow I wouldn't want to drive it on todays roads, i get paranoid about being rear ended standing at a roundabout, happened to me twice, first car written off, second time i was driving a transit, did 2.5k damage to it and it was almost new.

We used to go on holiday to
Saundersfoot in our Mini Clubman estate in the mid 80s - one morning we got up to find the B&B owner on his hands and knees in the car park saying he’d never seen a Clubman with the original sills 😂
likewise have memories of my dads vauxhall firenza breaking down on the way to a static caravanning holiday early 80`s at Saundersfoot..😆😊

My E9 was sitting for 4 months last year (typical due to weather). I used that time to slowly replace the starter that turned into a few other engine projects. Once everything was back together, I turned the engine to test the starter and get some lube going (I had fogged the cylinders). It immediately sparked up and started running. I still had the garage door closed because I did not expect it to fire up without some turning for 10-20 seconds. I was shocked. Old BMWs and that old M30 engine are bullet proof.
I'm love the selection of old barn finds but it also the amazing owners and personality's who we get to meet as well. love the LBS

I think Gor has seen the potential, and our visit has reassured him that it's not as bad as it first looks. Bear with us, but we are trying to get the car booked in for a resurrection!

For it's time the engine output is impressive. If it were mine I would be aiming for solid but presentable - that way nobody will be afraid to use it.
Here's hoping Jonny's (and Tony BMW's) visit and their encouragements spur Gor on to spend what's needed to get the car to pass MOT! The car obviously wants to get back on the road and I, for one, would thoroughly enjoy follow-on 'Late Brake Show' video 're-visits' to show how the owners (or new owners) have refurbished the finds and get them simply roadworthy.
Thank you. Yeah, a revisit is on the cards, and we are trying to guide Gor to book the car in with someone reputable to get the ball rolling. He wants to drive it and enjoy it before it's too late.
I remember seeing one at the 1971 LA Autoshow it was silver on a turntable and I thought it was the most beautiful car I had seen

Honestly, Gor's life is fascinating. He married that girl who was one of the three daughters of the armed detective who sold this car to him. They are no longer together, but the family stay in touch.
