The problem is that the politicians and the general population have issues with allocating tax money to the Defence Forces as they are of the belief that it's a waste of money and should go instead to e.g. Health , education - however, we need to educate our citizens in the importance of defending our state and that costs money.
They left it crumble for years now there is a shorted of serves men and women in the defence force
In most democracies, ppl would say, the no1 responsibility of a government, is to defend its territory. There are other obligations of course, health, jobs, education, food supply, etc., but defense is key. Here, Ireland is a complete outlier. No real defense capability. No multi lateral arrangements in lieu of the lack of defense forces. Who else follows the Irish model? No one that I know of . It's way over due for IRE to defend itself . Properly. Oh, yeah, and join NATO too, as we will never be able to cope without the multiplier of NATO.

Baltic nations don't either but they are in NATO. Ireland depends on UK for air defense who is in NATO but no longer in the EU. Ireland is in the EU and could probably get one of the bigger EU countries to help with air defense or just join NATO.

Denmark has had a majority in parliament on multiple occasion to ban circumcision of male infants, even though there is a majority the bill never passes. Something is blocking the democratic will of the Danish people from coming into effect.

Denmark is no different than many so called democracies, politicians run there campaigns on the promise of fixing problems, of course they never fix the problem because if they did they would not have anything to run on. This was and is the real reason Trump is so hated, Not being a politician he waltzed in and started solving problems that the politician class have been promising to fix for decades.
Ireland’s defence capabilities on land, sea and air have purposely been kept at very weak levels since 1922 in order to facilitate an easy invasion, as Ireland would be no match for a milltary invasion, especially in addition to an attack from within - it’s also an easy way to, after the British empire lost its power, to force Ireland to join an EU army, the UN or a NATO army and in our current times, to force Ireland to drop its neutrality just like the Consitution - the Swiss have clearly shown us that there is no point in being neutral unless you can effectively defend that neutrality via your Milltary forces that are not dependent on any other nations for our own defence, therefore if Ireland wants to maintain its neutrality, it must adopt the Swiss model of neutrality in full without the help of any other nations including the U.K.
If getting out of the EU is what is needed in order to maintain our Neutrality so be it, let's get out of the dictatorship from Brussels now.

Why should the UK protect Ireland we only have responsibility for Northern Ireland let the Southern Irish pay for their own defence.
Neutral countries are the easiest to attack. Ukraine was neutral and so was Belgium and Netherlands in ww2.
Nato is Europes neighbourhood watch ? Its a little bit more than that. Iraq and Afghanistan are situated well outside our European neighbourhood.
The Iraq war was not a NATO mission.
USA and UK the two most prominent members of Nato. Other Nato members gave support after the invasion. Poland put troops on the ground.
But you are correct that it was not officially sanctioned by Nato as an organisation. However Nato's expansion to the east together with Russian
miscalculation has been the two main factors that have lead to war in Ukraine. This takes Nato far beyond the description of neighbourhood watch.
