- The Tánaiste has dismissed suggestions the country relies on Britain's Royal Air Force to police our skies in the event of a hostile threat or that Ireland is the weakest link in Europe's defence.

Embarrasing ...either we are a modern European country or not ...many countfies our size have effective fighter deterrent.
Ah sure it will be alright john
The unvetted male migrants will be the new army. Nothing else to do and they’ll get barracks to live in.
you guys have 8 fighters that have propelors 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Its crazy to whitness billions of eu funds being poured into eastern European agriculture while 5% of that money would get Ireland a descent airforce to defend EU airspace not even taking the bottomless pit called Ukraine. Supporting Ireland that would benefit all of Europe.
@@Lucky_zeven
Well i dont agree...money spent on the defense of Ukraine seriously degrades the only disruptive power that is a direct thret to E.U.....Ukraine must be funded ,if Russia win there then we really do have problems....dont lusten to misinformation funneled from Moscow thru American bad actors .
"It's not like the entirety of Europe is depending on us for its security..."
Except they *are* relying on Ireland being able to adequately protect critical data infrastructure from interference, or at least be able to deter such external aggression, but this is something we cannot do because successive governments have neglected defence just as they have neglected other areas of infrastructure.
Has the MINISTER FOR DEFENCE got any clue just how integral transatlantic data transfer and data storage is to the economies of the EU, US, Britain?
But the Irish have Britian to thank for their freedom (not that I'm expecting any!) because without a deterrent they'd of long been taken over by absolutely anyone - & there's many nasty regimes which would destroy you & enjoy doing so.

Choice of career, location, age and individual ability all decide that. Somebody living in Donegal or Mayo is not going to have the same career opportunities as somebody living in an other region. None of that changes Irelands economic wealth overall If you want to see greater wealth from the bottom up then lower taxes, less regulations and more emphasis on local economies is the answer. If that was attempted there would be a boom in small local manufacturing, services and investment.
Ha ha ha says it all, all Ireland do is boringly knock the uk but they basically protect Ireland……laughable 😂😂😂😂😂
It's a rotten kind of behaviour to raise your voice every time the reporter is asking a question. Certainly when she is as right as she can be: the Irish DO depend on the RAF, the Irish ARE the weakest link in Europe's defence. If I were Irish, I would never vote for this man
Just be grateful and thankful to the uk
It’s hard to believe that there’s a conversation about defence and national security from the very people that couldn’t care less about the country in the first place. It’s almost comical.
Its mortifying. Im mortified that the only air defence is something akin to a Cessna prop plane. The only navy is hand me downs ships from other nations with a rifle on the bow but we pontificate and pretend that we could fight against dads army coming over the hill. We dont have a navy. We dont have any kind of airforce and to pretend we do is exactly that... pretence.
For Ireland to catch up and be able to defend it self will require a 50 billion investment and a military budget if about 10 billion per year.
The look out post on the Atlantic dont worry Europe neutral fighting Irish has your back sure NOT!
He sounds like a lying American politician.
Sure the little money the defence did get past tense the government cut it and closed barracks
A Small state like ours needs to be spending 2% of our GDP on defence
For Ireland probably 4% which equates to about 20 billion per year so as to make Ireland very difficult to invade. The problem that arises when WW3 comes is that no amount of money will acquire equipment as everybody will be after it.
We will be a strategic island for them to nestle on or an example island that will be nuked.
And Britians Navy. The Irish have a crazy sense of humour.
They need to get the finger out quite frankly. No excuse in 2023 for not being in NATO either.
We don't need to be in NATO we just need to invest in our Defence Forces
We don't need to join NATO, but we cant keep on going like our neutrality status alone is enough to protect us. Switzerland is neutral, yet they are one of the most armed and well trained military's in Europe.
@@Prodrentjet
The Nazis did not respect neutrality.
Yes to NATO. No other country has neither military alliances nor a defense force . IRL is unique in the developed world. Token military, and no military alliances . There are other neutrals still, but they are armed to the teeth. The pro neutrality brigade when defending their position say either there is no threat, ir if we were invaded, the UK or US would help. Well, they might, but hope is not a strategy.
Not much they can do anyways .
I can hear the Dad's Army Theme Tune
The RAF and royal navy needs to leave the Irish to there fate
Incorrect. The RAF and RN need to patrol Ireland and the rest of the British Isles to secure our islands.
I am a South African and would just say one thing "there is a lot of Irish boys in the ground throught Europa..."
What do you mean by this?
There’s a lot of dead Irish boys sent off to die in other European countries to fight wars that weren’t theirs to fight.
I find this ironic
Sort out your audio please. Keeps panning left and right...
People would lose their minds if we built an airforce.
Why does it matter in Ireland? We don't have a democracy in Ireland anymore, We now have the Western European Communists system.
The one where if you work hard you pay 70% of you income in direct and indirect taxes to pay for the parasites that are arriving into our beautiful country every day.
We need one badly
It’s complete joke at the moment
We are the only country in Europe without one with the exception off Iceland. But they have Nato fighter based there.
@@seanmaccionnaith3458tell me how you have come to the conclusion that we don't have a democracy anymore?
It's nice to hear that Ireland is relying on the ROiF up to a point. Independence is what was fought for and the majority of the UK are very happy with that, except the rugby, because a huge number of Brits have Irish ancestry. Until Ireland gets its own defence structure in place, a word to the wise, touch that country or even breath over it and you will have the UK to deal with.
the irish airforce have eight fighters and those are PC9s,,,thy have propelors 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
More like the 'missing' link!
The Paddy's never had armed forces to speak of. Once trained with an Irish mortar squadron in Thetford back in the 1980's & that van load of men represented near half their army! 🤣 Great guys however!
if we are allowing RAF to patrol our skies , then we are allowing a NATO force in our country there for our Nuterality is non existant .
who else is going to protect you..russian ships off your coast and you guys have only 8 fightrs and they are single propeller planes,,,,you have four or five old patrol ships in your navy,,you entire armed forces is less then 8000 active members...most of your equipment is handme downs you guys bought from other countrys at thier yardsales...you guys are ripe for being invaded
RAF leave Ireland alone let the Russians have them
Not going to happen.
Ireland for the Irish ☘️ ❤
You call us if anyone pushes you around the British will come protect you 🤭
Sure why not, let's spend billions on a Navy and an Air Force, it's not like we have a disfunctional health service, a housing disaster or an antiquated infrastructure, spend loads on arms, NATO will be delighted and the M.I.C. will look after the 8th, 10th and 11th count lads in the gravy train club.
Surely keeping your citizens safe should also be a priority? Neutrality is fine, but only when you have the power to enforce it. Otherwise another country will inevitably one day take advantage of it.
We don’t have a basic radar
System if we were invaded tomorrow we wouldn’t know it’s a complete embarrassment our army has been completely neglected without defense we don’t have a country
the British and The Russians constantly invade our air space and waters not even 3rd world country’s would let that happen
How can we even consider ourselves a Modern European first world country with one of most strongest economies in the world
And literally invest nothing into military or defense it’s insane
We might as well have stayed apart of Britain since it’s them after all
who’s defending us

Surely keeping your citizens housed, employed and able to access essential services is better than squandering money on making the arms industry richer, if country x, y or z decided it wanted to invade us then there's sfa we could do about it anyway......See Ukraine for example.

The RAF recently started recruiting black pilots and have stated their quota for white pilots is exceeded as part of their equal status policy .. seems strange these complaints and concerns are being highlighted now in Ireland when no complaints are heard in the past...RAF pilots of Carribbean heritage have a right to protect the Atlantic and most are of Irish Carribbean extraction which should be even more reassuring....Lilian Bader was the first black female RAF pilot ....Lauren Cusack is the only Irish Airforce pilot..for instance, a fact most people are not aware .
What ?
@@davidpryle3935 He is probably referring to a recent scandal where the RAF was turning down qualified white male applicants, in favor of less qualified female and ethnic minority candidates to try and hit diversity quotas. The rest of it I have no idea.
Er..what is this advert for 'diversity' doing on this commentary?.
The RoI doesn’t need to spend any more money on defence. Why should the gov spend money on the military when that money could go to schools, hospitals etc? We all know NATO would not let an enemy invade the RoI. So why pretend that Ireland is threatened if it doesn’t spend more money on defence?
Try and be thankful for the uk
Focus on fixng housing first. Then you can worry about defending them from imaginary bomber aircraft.
Imaginary is not what you think. Tu-95s have approached our airspace before. I agree on the fact the money should be better spent and sort out the housing and health care first. But it all boils down to bad management off the countries finances by the government. We are the only country in Western Europe without a proper air force.
Focus on homes for our Irish folks before been the ass***e volunteer of housing refugees.12,000 Irish people homeless.
