  • I've received numerous requests for a review of the Mission Io, the small form factor Mission FRFR amplifier speaker for use with modelers. Rather than just do my own, here's a really neat run down courtesy of Matt Blackett.
You can read Matt's full review in Guitar Player Magazine here: www.guitarplay...
We just updated the Io to Version 4 software. V4 gives the Io some of the frequency response characteristics of it's big brother, the Mission Gemini.
The Mission Io V4 is available here: missionenginee...

I can testify here... So I bought a Friedman ASC-10 and the Mission IO - pulled them into my studio room (tuned flat response room) to validate which of these modeling amps (basically) would give you the true sound of what your modeling devise (Line 6 Helix in my case) was delivering. The criteria for which would win - which product delivered the flattest response because these products are designed to go with your amp modeler like Line 6 Helix and Kemper etc... The primary advantage of these modelers is that you can set your parameters (your sound) the way you want right? And if set them in a Flat response room you will know what you are going to get at the gig (provided the sound guy at the gig place has tuned their PA/Room to flat response). This way you have a reference and you will get the same sound when you go to your gig. Hands down from go, Mission was the clear winner. The Friedman had a huge bloom of bass in the lower frequencies, even with the 100Hz filter on. Thus, the Friedman was too boomy and it cluttered the detail of the guitar. I had to get out the Analysis tools to check this out and sure enough, there was significant exaggeration of the lower frequencies on the ASC-10. The Mission proved to be more balanced across the 31 bands of freq I was measuring with pink noise. Thus, the Mission sounds more like you have headphones plugged directly into your modeler. Now, perhaps if I disabled the cab simulators off on the Helix, the Friedman may have been closer. However, that is not the point of these modelers. These modeling products (like Kemper & Helix) offer the option of selecting different cabinets (IRs) as everyone knows and deliver that in the situation. The Atomic is impressive as well but good luck with that company supporting product before & after the sale. Bottom line - the Friedman ASC-10 is going back. I love Friedman pedals and tube amps/cabs but, the ASC products are not one of their better products in my opinion.

Would this be a good match for my Quilter Labs Micropro? Sounds awesome!

for non powered Kemper users is this the product to go for? Im somewhat unsure of the difference to the Gemini range other than its wedge shape. Im looking for the best sounding option whilst still being light and easy to move. Thanks P.S wheres that boogie profile from??

For small and easy to move, the Io or Gemini Wedge would likely be the best bet. The Io is very small and light, it trades some features and SPL with the Gemini, which is larger, heavier and a more expensive but is louder and has more input options and the Empower feature.

James Lebihan So even though he has a non powered Kemper, since the speaker is powered, it would work? Or would be different need a power amp?

Why no power attenuator for those of us who want to plug in a tube amp? There is a huge missed opportunity for these companies. A well designed powered cabinet with effects loop, eq, and an attenuator that would accept 4, 8 and 16 ohms would be a revolution. You could have complete control over your sound... maybe even include some speaker simulator technology and all you would need to do is plug in your tube head and have a "done" sound no matter where you went. You can place effects AFTER the power section of your amp and be able to eq your head the way that it's done in a recording studio. I have been asking for this for years and do not understand why no one makes this. The technology exists and this is an opportunity to bring in the tube amp lovers to this amazing technology.

Lou Lombardi sounds like you’re describing what the Kemper does minus the production effects. If you’re going to attenuate the actual amp and the add speaker emulation you might as well just use the Kemper. For what you’re looking for I would suggest running something profiler or Bias Amp on a MacBook with a DAW of your choice for effects and then just run that into a pa or something like a FRFR cab. Or just do what they’ve been doing on road gigs for years, and just use a iso cab and run that into some units or a DAW live rig. My guess is the reason what you’re looking for isn’t a thing yet is because it already exists in other ways. I would be cool to use whatever amp you want that way but at this point with technology it’s just not worth the hassle. It wouldn’t actually sound better.

I think the Boss Waza tube amp expander will do exactly what Lou wants and yea, sound better.
