When I was watching this, I thought to myself, “this man is so broken and so tremendously fucked up.” Playing the games, it’s hard to stop and think about just who you’re playing as. This show is doing a fantastic job at showing that these are people. Human beings.

He’s not heartless. Just hardened. And it’s a lot easier for him to feel sympathy for someone that reminds him of his daughter, and probably kids in general.
Joel Isn’t the cruel, emotionless badass you think he is. He may have done bad things, and he’s not the greatest person but he’s still a human being with thoughts and feelings.

Even though he’s a survivor who’s lasted 20 years in the apocalypse, he’s still human and he’s getting older and slower. He’s starting to see Ellie as a daughter figure and that terrifies him, he’s already lost one daughter he can’t take losing another one. Joel has kept himself in a war state of mind for those 20 years. Not really living, but fighting to simply serve and survive as a guardian for his brother, Tess, and now Ellie. Once he's in Jackson, a place totally unlike Boston that actually resembles how society was and where his brother and Ellie are safe, he lets down his guard for the first time. Because he can finally live and reflect, he experiences PTSD at its worst. Every pain he's been through, starting from Sarah, now begins to crush him as his "failures".

It's so weird to see Joel like this. In the game, Joel is angry and commanding of his brother here. He's afraid of losing ellie sure but in the game he shuts it off and tries to hand her off not for her benefit but for his because he's afraid to care for her then lose her. Here he's begging and being vulnerable. Totally different emotional display. Interesting

The show really makes Joel more vulnerable than the game. In the game he sort of compartmentalizes everything he’s done because of survival on top of that his age doesn’t really affect the things you do in that game like beating up the infected or climbing up stairs. I love this scene a lot more than the game because it makes him more human. Hearing Pedro talk about how his body is failing him, how he can’t keep up, and that he’s failing at protecting his daughter in his own sleep got me 😢. “I’m failing in my sleep” that line broke me. He wouldn't have had such a speech with Tommy cause he would have never admitted his fears of losing Ellie like he lost Sarah so he tried to use the card "You have to do it for all the times I saved you in the past" on him but Ellie still figures out the real reason why he was gonna leave her with him as shown when they talk in that abandoned house. I guess in the show they made Joel less cold and more open to talk about his feelings to make the plot moving faster.

This is definitely one of my (if not my absolute) favorite monologues from a show or movie. And, Pedro Pascal just delivers and performs it absolutely incredibly.
    Here's the whole transcript,
She's immune. Ellie. She got infected, but she didn't get sick. Tommy. Tommy. I saw her get bit myself. That was months ago. Months. She's immune.
("From the beginning.") It was Marlene. She hired us to smuggle her to some Fireflies. It went bad. Tess got bit. She made me swear to take the kid. It was her dyin' wish, what the hell was I supposed to do? We made it as far as KC, and then-- You know, she saved my life there... from another kid. Five years ago, I would've destroyed him. But she had to shoot him to save me. 14 years old. Because I was too slow, and too fuckin' deaf to hear him comin'. And I saw... I saw a man kill his own brother... to save her, while I just watched. And today, I thought that dog was gonna tear her apart because it smelled somethin' on her. And all I did was stand there. I couldn't... move. I couldn't think of anything to say. I just-- I was so afraid. You think I can still handle things, but... I'm not who I was. I'm weak. Lately, there are these moments where the fear comes up outta nowhere, and... my heart... feels like it stopped. And I have dreams. Every night. ("What kinda dreams?") I don't know. I can't remember. I just know when I wake up... I've lost somethin'. I'm failin' in my sleep. That's all I do. It's all I've ever done is fail her again and again. ("You want me to take her.") I'm just gonna get her killed. I know it. I know it. I have to leave her. ("Joel.") I mean that's why you took off on me, right? To make up for the things we did? Well, here's your chance to bring your kid into a better world. You're younger than me, you're still strong. You said it yourself, you'll come back. You have to take her. And you can't tell anyone, not even Maria. Tommy, you're the only one I trust. If anyone else sees those bites on her, what's under her skin... they'll shoot her. It's the last thing I'll ever ask of you. I swear.

And from the confrontation in the lost ranch to the choice on the horses he looks bipolar. Here, we can see all the progression of his change of heart, showing also all his Weaknesses. A good adaptation, and fucking amazing adaptations, is when a new creator takes whats there, and rather than abiding by strict rules and guidelines, expands upon it, while paying respect to the original.
Can that go wrong sometimes? Yes.

My favorite thing about the writing in this show is that the show runners and even the characters, especially Joel, understand how difficult it is being old in the apocalypse.
Joel is vulnerable not just because he's with his brother, but because he finally found someone who he can care about again. However, he's smart enough to know that he isn't in his prime and cannot protect her as well as Tommy. Joel isn't nearly as strong as he is in the game, and it's that mortality that makes this version of him all the more endearing.

Actually i think this scene was better than the original one, that's not a bad thing, all the contrary, they managed to improve something almost perfect by it's own

Pedro is a master at emotional monologues...reminds me of that scene in got where oberyn tells tyrion he will be his champion. The bonedeep pain that has turned into anger and here joel is terrified because he knows he has already failed one daughter when he was younger and stronger

I love how uncomfortable and sad Tommy is to see his big brother, a strong, stoic man who protected him for years breakdown and sob in front of him.

Man, Pedro Pascal is one of the best actors of this generation, I can't barely breath every time I watch this scene. Pedro is a gift from the Gods

Twitter is the worst thing ever bc some people were clowning on this moment so hard calling it "forced" or "obvious" for Joel to basically lay out his character arc like this.
It's mainly been game players I've noticed trashing the dialogue. I haven't played the game myself, but from the little that I have seen there's still seems to be quite a lot of back and forth between Joel and Ellie.
But it makes sense for the story? And for the character(s)? Joel has gone through such a traumatic few months losing Tess, Bill, Frank, Henry, and Sam while keeping it all bottled up. It makes sense that when he's finally with Tommy, someone he trusts, that he would finally let the floodgates open. Let's just be grateful that we have an actor of Pedro Pascal's character as Joel and that he has this kind of material to work with.

I saw a comment somewhere that they were not convinced by Pedro's acting in this scene and I'm convinced they're clinically insane

I never saw the show but this scene between Joel and Tommy hurt my heart and showed a softer side of Him
I like it when a guy shows his emotions and even cried

So instead of a heated argument like in the game joel opens his guts out… 😢

I like that they build up the PTSD angle in this season itself and portray Joel not just as a badass survivor but an actual broken father in the middle of the season itself, gives a more human angle to his story... makes sense for what's coming next season
