      So they made slight changes, but kept the lines mostly the same, and Bella and Pedro did the rest.
      Damn...you can tell from this scene why Ashley and Troy had so much praise for these 2.
      Bella and Pedro did their homework, and made sure to Not ruin their roles...and the bar was already set Extremely High.

      They kinda match the dialogue to what the actor sounds best with, Troy has that real emotional deepness when he says “you are treading on some MIGHTY thin ice here” but Pedro sounds really deep and hurt the way he says “don’t say another word. With that stare. It’s just as impactful in my opinion.

      Pedro's version of Joel, to me, is much more of a "speak softly and carry a big stick." Joel's not a talker, he says what he needs to say. A lot of the bigger, more quotable lines have been cut for him because it doesn't really fit his character. So rather than "He ain't even hurt," it's just "No." Instead of "You're treading on mighty thin ice here," it's just "Don't." I like it personally, it makes him very cold and no nonsense, like an old gunslinger.

      I agree! It's perfect with how he was prior to that scene. He was just being vulnerable with his brother, so it makes sense to why he doesn't sound more harsh towards Ellie.
      Plus in the game, he was more hardened and wasn't ready to bring his walls down yet. Ellie was pushing his limits in the game especially after running away, whereas in the show she wasn't.

    I know people are gonna miss the "thin ice" line here but the way Pedro says "Don't." here is a perfect encapsulation of the show's Joel over the game.. he's much more vulnerable, emotional - the way he delivers it isn't him being harsh or demanding - it's him begging, pleading with Ellie not to open up a scar he's so desperately trying to keep closed. Very similar to how he brushes off the "have you killed a lot of innocent people" comment just a couple episodes ago.. This show is a masterpiece in re-telling a story we thought we knew and giving it so much more depth that it makes us feel so much more.. Druckmann and Mazin are doing a helluva job so far, I'm almost sad it's gonna end in a few weeks but at the same time relieved because I can't take much more of this balling my eyes out every Sunday night routine they have me going through right now xD

      Very on point comment, the moment Ellie mentions his daughter you see that subtle change in his expression, and you can see it in his eyes how he’s going back to that moment in episode 1 where he loses Sarah. This adaptation has so much for emotional weight than the game did, at least in my opinion.

    • @sds187
      @sds187 Рік тому +9

      @@noahgonzalez1562 the game story is, by far, better to me.
      The show has ZERO nuance/ subtlety. It keeps bombarding me with one sad thing after the other, it basically just says "look at how sad everything everywhere is".
      In the game, we don't see much of Joel as a person. This makes his conversation with Tommy in the game so much better, the way he commands "Tommy I NEED THIS" when he asks him to take Ellie. Only then do we get the hint of what is going through in Joel's mind. The whole dialogue in the show "i can't protect her, i am weak, i am a failure etc etc"- is just summed up in that one "i need this" dialogue in the game in a perfect, subtle manner. There is this concept called "SHOW, DONT TELL." Have some recognition for the audience's intellect. I don't appreciate being spoonfed like this. If a story is actually immersive i will figure stuff out myself. Also in the game we are not shown Maria and Ellie's conversation so Ellie's "I'm not her you know" is far more shocking.
      I am pissed off at how some of the iconic fight scenes in the game are cut out. That AMAZING sequence where Joel is impaled and Ellie fights off the other hunters is replaced with a fucking awful scene in the show.
      when we see Joel after his injury, in winter, laying down, cold, shaking, weak, it's just heart breaking. Berlin(Berleezy) said looking at that moment "I take back every mean thing I said about this man." The show will not be able to produce such an effect, given its pathetic writing upto this point.
      I don't know why people are praising this show so much. It is not as good in my opinion. I have lost interest in the show and probably won't watch the next episodes.
      The show sucks.

    • @noahgonzalez1562
      @noahgonzalez1562 Рік тому +30

      @@sds187 I’m honestly amazed at how everything you just said wouldn’t work or make any sense. First off, it’s not a game it’s an adaptation, it’s not a carbon copy of the game, if it was then there wouldn’t be a point to it. You want an exact replica just play the game or watch the gameplay again.
      Second, in the game Joel is more frustrating and angry, but in the show he’s more vulnerable as he’s older, weaker, and doesn’t want to lose another daughter, that’s more compelling than just commanding your brother to take the kid, instead of being so commanding, he pleaded with his brother to take the kid so he won’t get her killed as he doesn’t trust himself to keep her safe. That’s more compelling and unlike the game is much more realistic.
      Third, the show is also a drama, you have to take into account that the show won’t be centered around the fight and action sequences. If you want that go watch a marvel or DC movie. The writing itself is trying to convey a heartfelt story of a father and a daughter making their way through an apocalypse, Also, in a realistic world Joel ain’t surviving a 20 feet impalement like that, so be realistic next time.
      And finally, people are praising this show because it’s genuinely really good, it’s faithful, it’s respective to the games and it works. So think on that the next time you decide to say stupid shit like this.

    • @sds187
      @sds187 Рік тому +7

      @@noahgonzalez1562
      And i am honestly amazed you completely misunderstood my comment and missed the point.
      I DON'T want an exact replica of the game. However i dont feel they put much effort into writing the new story.
      Joel in the game asked Tommy to take Ellie for that exact same reason you mention- because he couldn't trust himself to keep her safe. Why else do you think Joel asked that, in the game? Because he was tired or something??? Why would he then say "I NEED this!"? That is the subtlety i am talking about. I didn't need to have them spoonfeed me about why Joel wouldn't take her, like they did in the show. If one is sensitive, he can figure it out on his own. In the game, because we were not bombarded with how Joel felt inside, it made the interactions between him and Ellie far more immersive, and made us anticipative and curious.
      You mention that the show is a drama. I recognise that. However just like a shitload of jumpscares doesn't make a horror movie good, similarly showing emotionally demanding scenes one after the other doesn't make a drama any good either. It's like a comedian tickling you to make you laugh. I don't feel immersed in the show.
      I don't need the show to be CENTRED around fighting, but i definitely need a BALANCE. I never said in my original comment that i need a pole to go through Joel's back and emerge out of his stomach. I don't need him to kill 76 men like he did in the game. Thus your comment "be realistic next time" doesn't make any sense. In fact i appreciated how they showed it in a more realistic manner in the show. But Joel could have atleast fought 3-4 guys before his injury. Joel has guns, they had machetes, the fight scene wouldn't have been unrealistic. Also they cut out the intense scenes after his injury, where Ellie fights the hunters off (it is one of my favourite Ellie moments).
      "The writing is trying to convey a story of a father and daughter making their way through an apocalypse." Yeah i know that. I didn't watch the entire 10 hour gameplay 4 times over, watch clips seperately and watch reaction videos, just to see Joel smashing a bottle on someone's head. I watched it because I love the story and find it beautiful.
      The great thing about the game was how it stood the test of time and is still relevant. People won't praise this show long enough, i will see how relevant the show is 10 years later. The show is only good because the game story is good. However much you fuck that up, you will still end up with a passable adaptation.

      @@sds187 Why not try to finish first the show instead? If you could watch the game "4 times over", then indeed you cannot be just stuck in a gamer mindset and toss over the beauty that is offered by the show. You cannot find all the same raw emotions in the game and the show. You cannot deny as well that they have the same raw emotions, narrating the same story in different ways. You said it yourself, the show is good because the story is good. What's the point of comparing? The game and the show are beautiful in their own difference themselves?

      @@MayLilyin the game, Joel snaps at Ellie when she brings that up because she's challenging his defense mechanism developed due to losing Sarah. He has been in survival mode for the past 20 years. He doesn't get too close to people, and most certainly doesn't get attached to them. It's the entire point of Bill's character in the game, he is a representation of what Joel will become if he continues to live his life in survival mode. Whereas in the show the sentient is the exact opposite with Bill's character, who represents what Joel could become if he chooses to drop the survivalist mentality, which he doesn't even subscribe to all the much in the first place considering he's willing to risk his life in order to reunite with Tommy. Sam and Henry represent his biggest fear, and ultimately convince him to hand Ellie off. In the show Sam and Henry represent the same theme, however i'd argue it is far less effective considering the mess of a plot device they're tangled up in named Kathleen. In the game, Pittsburgh and the group of Hunters whom reside there, represent the world of The Last of Us, and what it drives people to. They are nameless and faceless threats that do an incredibly effective job at demonstrating how horrific and dangerous the world is outside of quarantine zones. They are men whom will kill you without second thought just to check if the shoes you're wearing are worth keeping, they represent how any random meaningless conflict could be the reason you die. In the show they give names and faces to an entire resistance group with a clear purpose, find and kill the man responsible for the death of their previous leader. Not only is it exceedingly clear what their objective is, but we get multiple overwritten monologues from Kathleen attempting to justify her cause. She speaks about it in nearly if not every scene she is present, even if it means not monologuing, simply shutting the fuck up, would result in her achieving her goal. It seems that in an attempt to do something different with the story, to dare i say; breathe new life into one of the most highly regarded narratives we have ever experienced, that they lost sight of what that narrative was saying, and what it is was all about in the first place. The narrative in the show is complete shit show, and the technical aspects of the show such as cinematography, costume/set design, the performances, and most importantly the editing, do nothing but hinder the experience even more due to being down right horrible to lackluster at best.

I still think this scene on the whole is better done in the game just because personalities are bit different there but this little detail and many more that I don't notice at first (because coming from the game that's not what I'm focusing on) has made me appreciate the show and Bella and Pedro's perfomances a whole lot more.

    I think this scene alone perfectly defines how the show refurbishes the game to adhere to a new format of storytelling.
    Joel isn’t angry so much as he’s scared. He doesn’t give the iconic thin ice line, but rather a simple “Don’t. Don’t say another word”. Much more simple, yet it communicates a different message. Less a “back off”, more a “please don’t”. Which is fitting, since the last thing he said to the soldier that shot him and Sarah was, “Please don’t”.
    In the game, you get the sense of the same kind of Joel, but sheltered by a different kind of armor. In the game he’s much more plated by this gruff and aggressive persona. In the show, it’s a sad and reluctant shell.
    Both adaptations tell the same story, but have different ways of communicating the story, which serve both mediums respectively.

  • @ajerqureshi6411
    @ajerqureshi6411 Рік тому +11

    Even though these scenes are mostly the same, their is a notable difference in how they are presented. In the game, this scene follows after a tense moment of chasing a runaway Ellie who sheltered in a house. An obviously frustrated Joel tries to get her out of the house and the argument briefly gets heated right up until Ellie brings up Sarah. Joel saying "You're treading on some mighty thin ice here" is just seething with a complex combination of anger and fear.
    In this version, Joel arrives at Ellie's place to break the news of her going with Tommy, and is trying his best to be gentle, only to be confronted by a understandably bitter Ellie who feels betrayed. So when Sarah is brought up, Joel's reaction is driven largely out of fear.
    This to me is a good example of a change, taking an iconic scene and recontextualizing it to have a different feeling or meaning.

    1:17 I imagine Ellie would mistake that soft tone for anger based off her experiences with him up to this point. As a previous comment - Rabbit Requiem - noted, the quiver in that single word really shows the encapsulation of this interpretation of the character. He isn't being harsh or forceful - he's almost pleading with Ellie not to talk about it. Joel's whole approach to dealing with his trauma - both in the game and the show - is trying to move on from the deaths of those who mattered to him. Whether it is Sarah or Tess, Joel tries to move on. The show really delves into why this fails: he grieves the loss of Bill and Frank as valuable connections in the dreary post-apocalyptic world, he breaks down in solitary over Tess after reading Bill's letter, he silently contemplates the senseless deaths of Henry and Sam. Finally, he shows his unwillingness to even discuss his daughter has brought Ellie even more emotionally closer to him.
    The whole television show is phenomenal in showing that even if Joel has a method to deal with the world, the world is slowly grinding him down because - ultimately - that method fails. He needs the connection which Ellie offers, even if he refuses to believe it.

    I like Pedro, but this scene needed him to be more emotional instead of reserved. What made this scene so powerful in the game was that it was the first real time Ellie pierced Joels armor, where you legit feel the anger grow in him from her words as well as the conflict within him. Pedro's portrayal here (and why I wasn't for him being Joel) just doesn't do it for me, cause it's too somber and monotone for what should exude intense emotion between these two. Bella on the other hand is doing it perfectly.

      You make a very good point within the context of the game, but I feel a very clear difference between game Joel and series Joel.
      Game Joel is hardened, he’s not actively looking for Tommy. He’s only living to survive, and he doesn’t let anyone in.
      Series Joel is a lot more vulnerable with his fears and weaknesses. Unlike the game, he hasn’t given up on his connection with Tommy. He’s actively seeking him, and that makes him a much more active and emotionally connecting character.
      Armoured Joel might still work here in the context of Joel and his daughter, but it wouldn’t be as strong in the series as it was in the game. Game Joel’s anger after Ellie mentions Sarah is due to him constantly avoiding thinking about her and connecting with people. It’s the first time he’s being confronted about his daughter, unlike in the series.
      With the changes made to his motives, him pouring his heart to Tommy in the series is a very different yet welcoming change that still stays true to Joel’s character and values. Rather than showing how emotionally distant he’s become from others, the show decided to emphasise Joel’s fears deep down that he can’t protect Ellie like Tommy can - something the game only subtly implied.
