- This is one of the best live videos I have ever seen to date. There are no words to describe the musicianship on these songs. Read on...
Remember Shakti is a quintet which combines elements of traditional Indian music with elements of jazz. The band consists of English guitarist John McLaughlin, Zakir Hussain (tabla), U. Srinivas (mandolin), Shankar Mahadevan (vocals), and V. Selvaganesh (kanjira, ghatam, mridangam), who are all of Indian descent. The band's name is derived from John Mclaughlin's acoustic Indian fusion band Shakti which was active in the 1970s.

I was their limo driver in 1976. Great spiritual players.
limo? wow, luxury for this kind of music. Well deserved.
@@douzilles It's a lot easier to be spiritual in a limo than, say, a Ford Escort or a VW. Just saying.
@@richardwillford2418 Haha, nice Richard. Turn up that A.C.
Where? In Zagreb, perhaps?
Legend has it, listening to Shakti makes a sober person high and a high person sober...
Sorry for being a killjoke! It is not legend. Both of your said experiences to this concert, off and on is not stuff of legends. Just a plain obvious truth to all who are open to both high up and sober down! Great music does that to one and all!
I was high on whiskey tonight but now I'm high on shakti
Magnificent comment.
Ha..Ha...You Said it bro...Bingo 👌👍😊
underrated ❤
The thing I love most about this video is the close ups of Zakir Hussain and V.S. The quick intelligence and wonder in Zakir's eyes is fascinating. The close ups show music unfolding in the moment, imagined and shaped by musicians at the highest peak of their craft.
RIP U. Shrinivas. Thank you for the wonderful music.
Andy Northall What he passed so young!
He's dead? Fuck.
Usted Shrinivas.....they come down to visit us.... and be among us......
I met Master Shrinivas in DC in the early 2000's at a Shakti show. He has so kind and humble and gracious. One of a kind. That soul will return to offer more to the universe.
bennytude....Truth.....
35:15 stuff gets ripping!
@@mistrynp Many moments where it rips in this vid !
John McLaughlin and Shwan Lane showed us that it is possible to go all raga on the guitar! Love both of them. Incredible artists!
If I only had 1 concert to listen to for the rest of my life, this would be it! It's so rich that I can't imagine ever deciphering it all
what a happy expression on John s face.
I've never been in touch with my cultural heritage, but I have always been a dedicated listener of jazz and to see the two fused here is just absolutely amazing and it makes me feel quite proud.
I am old enough & blessed to have seen John since 74 in Central Park with Maha 1 & 2 in 76. Later saw Shakti with young Zakir whom I would eventually see again close up performing Morning Ragas in a small church with the likes of Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia & Shiv Kumar Sharma. About 10 years ago I saw a Shakti reunion and was incredibly amazed how much better they all were if that's even possible.
Beautiful witness.....
The trademark sounds of John McLaughlin's guitar and U Shrinivas' mandolin spiral me into heaven each time I hear songs of Remember Shakti.
Truth....
This music is very relevant to the troubled times we live in today. As a long time resident of the US (over 40 years) and someone of Indian origin I sometime get distressed as to the political matters in this country. Then I watch this video. It makes me want to get up next morning and get back to work. Wonderful
Words of wisdom, the arts DO have a critical place in society, not just finance and technology. Remember Shakti's artistry is a reminder of this value.
@@michaelalderete9622 Truth brother Michael....Encallah....
Saw this at Keystone west in SF! transcendence.
I'm glad to say that I saw these musicians live at The Orpheum here in Vancouver, BC, Canada. Amazing that they were just so flawless. Light-years ahead of the rest.
This is intensely beautiful and frenetic at the same time.
EDIT: And John Mcalughlin is obviously one of the greatest guitarists of our era.
He is the greatest. Just because of how much he has explored the instruent
@@NalinVinayak Another explorer of his instrument is fellow brother Pat Metheny.....and not only his instrument(s).....the compositional explorer that he is (him solo ...and him/Lyle Mays)....
@@NalinVinayak And other cultures
I am so grateful to live in a day in age where I can experience this even though ill never get to experience it in person. Their passion and talent brings me so much joy
Love you U Srinivas miss you :(
For my tastes John is the best guitarist on the planet right now.
He's got everything. A wide musical influence. Mad ability.
He embraces amazing poly rhythms flawlessly.
Vai is the only other guitarist that attempts the same breadth John has and has the talent to fulfil it but he seems somehow held back from fulfilling his potential.
No judgement but I hope he comes good.
Luv and Peace.
also up there with John...is Pat Metheny....a most amazing guitarist musician and composer.....just saw him in London with his Unity Group....monster.
Jazz Fusionner never forget Balawan, Shawn lane,or Guthrie Govan who imo is the best currently alive.
Cheers Transitum...always on the lookout for great musos..
Jazz Fusionner don't forget Henry kaiser and the late Larry Coryell who toured with the original Shakti in India kaiser paid a gorgeous tribute for Shrinivas from St Petersburg showing his acumen
Lets not forget Guthrie, tosin, and some others
It happened on Jul 2th,2004.
And them performed these songs:
1) Caruna (John McLaughlin)
2) 5 Piece Band (John McLaughlin)
3) Manopa (Zakir Hussain)
4) Sakhi (Zakir Hussain)
5) Giriras Sudha (Shakti)
whats the name of the first song?
+Joby Varghese Five Peace Band
karuna" which means "mercy"
karuna means compassion literally.
What makes me cry every time I watch this is that the great mandolin maestro U Srinivas is no more with us. What a great tragedy for pure music lovers. He was like an angel . The way the maestro John McLaughlin conceived and controlled this band shows his genius. One of the liveliest bands ever. Now that U Srinivas is no more there, I dont know about its future.
I learned of him and his gifts some time after his death. I would have loved to have seen Srivinas perform in concert; thank God for videos like this.
@@michaelalderete9622 Those moments when the camera focuses in on Usted Shrinivas' eyes....that tells it all.....
They're touring Indian metros in a few days time ❤️
I have found something above humans and materials to love.
i don't know how many times i already watched through...
Apart from all the other wonders of this music, their timing is out if this world! Listen how close Johnji's accents are in relation to the rhythmic instruments!
Fantastic! So happy to have found this.
My cousin is in the new version of Shakti, Ganesh Rajagopalan. Can’t wait to see the, hopefully, in the States!
This is the best band. Period!!
Music of the Gods! This band achieves the same spiritual intensity as the original MO. Absolutely awesome! Thanks for a terrific upload.
Yes, I remember Shakti. Still have my vinyl record. Shakti have such a good rythm.
The moment when ustad started playing the tabla in the first composition, I got goosebumps 😍😍
Truth.....
Best ever Musik......wowwwwww
The first ten seconds of Shankar Mahadevan, brilliant....
wonderful. seeing them live next week in Timisoara.
Sakhi, soo ravishing voice of Shankar Mahadevan!!
Never knew these legends got together on the same stage!
exceptional music...
At 71 years now, I contnually enjoy the likes of Weather Report, Miles Davis, Little Feat and Rolling Stones; but McLaughlin is particularly a friend among the ones I recognise best, like Elvis etc
the world needs these healing sounds right now
Remember Shakti is one of my favorite ensembles of all times. I saw them in the summer of 2004 in Lisbon and it was one of the greatest shows I had ever heard. It didn't hurt that I was 4 rows from the stage and could see all their hand movements except when Zakir went into warp speed.
Amazing!!! Words are not enough to applause this music show.
This concert is amazing. Awesome musicians, beauty done music. John McLaughlin, what more can ask for ? Great, brilliant, marvellous, fantastic. Shakti, the name of the music
Overwhelming and speechlessifying !.
One of the best 50 minutes of my life!
Coup de coeur pour cette musique !!!!
et quelle sérénité !!!!!! c'est un anti-dépresseur ................
So much discipline in their music.Such a wonderful video.I believe this video deserves more views. :D
That drum setup!!! 35:56 Goodness Godness, I love it!
When I hear such magnificence I think what all of our other cultural parts together will sound like if this India / Jazz combining sends you to 7th Heaven within your heart and soul? Add the voicing/toning will magnify 10-fold-plus the orgasmic results it shall be.
Our earthly vessels right now could not Contain the beauty that it shall be. Amazing healing of my tired spirit from so many challenges in the past two days.....Thanks 'Jazz' for bringing me back here today.
Beautiful and soulful music. Love from Australia
Beautiful Heaven music with world class musicians! How old is this video? 2-3 years? I am impressed with John McLaughlin, the Highlander! He will never grow old! Immortal! And he will never stop developing his music!
+Manolis Skoulas It's performed in 2004 July in France.
I just love the piece from 25:00 from these legends. Thank you for this wonderful upload
I am in awe! Another of my favorite!❤
Mystical......
WOW!!Just WOW
Some human beings are just superior and that's all there is to it. John Mclaughlin is one such being.
Still listening to Shakti after 20 years.
Divine ...
At 33:33 you see John being delighted by the voice then while listening to the mandolin solo he is delighted even more. The song gets crazy from there with the guitar in synth mode.
Just beautiful! Another world - of dreams and harmony, where we all want to be....Thanks for the upload, manohartvs!
I find this concert magical and enthralling-a truly wonderful upload-thank you8
One of the best YT videos of all time.
this one formed me ❤
Wow... I am completely amazed. This is more than music. Brilliance is not enough to describe the sound. I am thankful to have found this video. Thanks for sharing!
Quite possibly the greatest band we've ever seen. They were all each in their own making, legends. Yet, they came together for nothing more than the for the pure music that they were devoted to.
For all who know, will remember the name, Shakti!
Indeed they are.
thanks for posting/sharing this.
Masters of music
Wow! What great improvisers!! Stunningly beautiful and moving music. World music meets modern jazz!!
This is eternal What a great musicians!! Listen to all, but pay attention to Mr. Shankar Mahadevan, a beautiful fusion vocal, just excellent! John McLaughlin is fantastic and the tabla genius - Mr. Hussain, is the best! The rest of the group members are absolutely wonderful, sorry, I don't know their names.
I attended almost the same shakti
concert in Tbilisi in 2004, it was somethin realy special!!!
such a beautiful blend of jazz and Indian classical. These are the Legends of music.
This is incredible.
I have seen many bands, and been to many concerts covering all styles. I can honestly say that this Shakti line up at the RFH was the most stunning performance I have ever experienced.

Greatest n amazing guitarist..
Bebop on a WHOLE NOTHER LEVEL!
Love the sound John's getting from his guitar from 36.30 to 38.50 !
That's no guitar. That's a ball of infinite energy in tune with the cosmos.
Some kind of effect, he has used it quite effectively.
A classic integral performance that has been part of my coming of age.
Have a drink and listen this @34:20 you will have tears Trust me.
This is absolutely brilliant.
Seeing and hearing these guys live is fantastic!!!
what a monster he was RIP Srinivas the gurudev
If you don't live in Mpls at can't go to IMSOM events, do yourself a favor and look up your local chapter -- because I've never been disappointed by a concert of indigenous Indian musicians who seem to be travelling America in search of an audience.
How does John mclaughlin just outlive everyone
I had dinner with Zakirs hamily after the concert at the Royal festival hall! Lovely people X
