when I first heard Paul Motian live I was high as a kite in my high school years, mid 90s, and I thought the weed made me hear with a wobbly tempo. A bit later and I realized its one of Motian's instruments - he was using the tempo as an instrument of expression.
To sound like an adult student of jazz drumming after many decades of professional career is something that extremely few drummers and musicians in general are able to do. There is something extremely unique to Motian's drumming.
Paul Motian will be missed. He led some very interesting groups over the years and this one is one of my favorites. I never had the chance to catch this trio live but this great upload goes some way to making up for that. Thank you!
This is a really cool version of this tune. I really like how it sounds full and the changes are obvious when only Paul and Bill where playing. The contrast between frisell's minimalism and Lovano's more 'free jazz' is also way cool
One studies to learn not to play roots and full chords and here you have to render the harmony all by yourself while you're soloing as well. Not an easy task for any guitarist!
Love, Bill Frisell's playing! But he seems to have an awkward physical relationship with his guitars. Watching the way he hunches and almost lurches his hands around, it's like he's performing a series of gymnastic maneuvers; like he just manages to get his fingers in place and then the perfect note(s) appear. Contrast that with his guitar peer group of Metheny, Scofield, Stern whose movements always seem so fluid.

One of the great 'inventors' of the drum

Shame. No credit for guitar and sax.

Is why music is an audible art ... not a visual one.
I saw him live recently he has fixed that. Seems he has lost weight to deal with that "hunchback"
danny barnes said something like frisell was always playing defense...
just anticipating, in real time. lotsa heart...
fine line between that and just responding...
Bill, I absolutely adore you, but get a new shirt, bro...
Maaaan, whatever, man
