I have been a drummer (hobbyist) for over 50 years and I absolutely love Paul Motian's drumming, but I could never describe to anyone what he is doing, not even myself.
For years I struggled to understand why Paul Motion was so highly regarded but my breakthrough came listening to this marvelous trio. Now I have caught up with all of Paul's recordings and heard them with different ears-it's a mystery why I did not appreciate his music earlier. RIP Paul
This music creates an overall mood unique to each listener who truly hears it. Paul Motian plays with such restraint. He was a great listener which is so important to this music. For me, this is highly personal music. I hear it best in the fall time when skies may be gray and temps are in the low to mid 60's. But, it is just as good in the winter, spring, and summer. Open your hearts and ears and let it wash over you.
@KNKeyboarder What's awesome about your comment is that Motian would have loved it! I listen to this with grey clouds rolling over power lines outside of my window and bare trees and leaves blowing and all I can think is how lucky I am - how thankful - to live in a world where music like this exists and to get to see it and hear it and share it with my children and people I care about.
Thank you so much, now I know why Miles Davis always wore suits and polished leather shoes - not for decency or for better looks : it made him sound cool. Good night, sleep tight and God bless you. Amen
Well Actually, I hear a lot of form in this piece. I'm sure to someone who only listened to classical music or pop songs, Robert Johnson's music also appeared to have "no form". This is great music, period.
A jazz music dealer was out of a piece of music I wanted, he said maybe I'd like this, and he sent me a couple of copies of Paul Motian's music. (This was quite a long time ago.) Was he right! I couldn't get enough. I am glad to see this after hearing it on the CD player all of this time.
In many ways . for example one way is Physically the sound would be different, because anything on his head would make him play different, just in the same way as when one scratches ones head it can make one sneeze.
No form is a form, too. But, there is still a beautiful cohesiveness in their performance. Very open. It is a form in that way, so much better than the amateurs who just create chaos.
I have heard the music this gentleman makes me feel cozy for a good while, but yet have studied his pedigree and what he gave permission to be released with regard to his private and confidential matters; good filtering is censorship, cynics, and/or Rule of Law, or reason, or power & money, weapons all to themselves in not a mere category, but entire department/entity within public govt., yes it is suggested just for fun.
@laotzu2u ...and the really nice aspect of your comment is how I hear nature when I listen to Mr. Motian. To me, he sounds like rain, wind, clouds, etc. Not idiomatic....

I was looking for the Bill Frisell and Thomas Morgan version of this tune and stumbled onto this, so glad I did. Absolutely amazing.

People who complain about "no form" have probably never set out to create something with no form. It's not as easy as it sounds.
An amoeba has form
I'm watching this during the hurricane and its insane

no because that would effect the music
Do people realize how good Bill and Joe have to be at timekeeping? Paul is mostly not marking time and there's no bass.
The music is fine, but can`t the drummer wear a hat or a cap or at least paint some advertising upon his naked skull?
who hurt you
