Julian Lage-Jorge Roeder duo: "Ode to Elvin"

- A sensational jazz dialogue between two great string players, guitarist Julian Lage and bassist Jorge Roeder; during the Lage Group's gig at the Blue Room, Kansas City, 2-21-11. "Ode to Elvin" was composed by Julian Lage and George Marsh. At the moment it's late 2020, and I'm irritated that UA-cam has layered an ad on this video. I deliberately chose not to monetize the video, because, hey, it's not my music. But, because of the extraordinary viewership, I suppose, UA-cam is aiming to make money off of it. Shame on UA-cam, and if anyone can advise how to dump the ad, please let me know.
So happy that people are still finding this mind-blowing bit and so happy I was there to record it. Cheers to all....
This video was how I found Julian Lage. Thank you for uploading it, studying him continues to help me improve to no end.
Very happy that people all over are still finding this video. It was special to be there and special every time I watch it, too. Thanks for all the good comments.
Steve Paul he is one of the best musicians of this era. a true gem and gift for us, mere mortals, to enjoy and study... thank you for uploading
Still finding it! Thank you so much for capturing these moments!
Thanks for recording and sharing this jewel ! God bless you
This is one of my favourite julian lage videos
OK I BELIEVE IT NOW. THIS KID IS A GENIUS.
holy fucking shit this is incomprehensibly awesome
I'm at least 1000 of these views. Can't believe how great this performance is.
I figured there was one guy watching it 100,000 times, but close. Thanks. I was glad to catch it and always thrilled anew when I watch again.
Damn. I need to go practice.
Genius isnt enough to describe this! Sublime? Outstanding?! F**king unbelievable?!?!?!
WOOOOOW BLEW MY MIND! These guys mix so well and you can tell that they really love what they are doing and they do it so well!
Never have i seen jazz being approached this way. Hands down, the best duo i´ve seen, EVER!
I'm still very happy to see all the wonderful comments on this clip. Right place, right time: I still get chills when I watch it again, too.
Julian's passion for his music is so amazingly infectious. He plays for the sheer joy of it. Inspiring.
I know exactly what you mean.
his playing is so tasteful. he owns every note and speaks with such confidence and clarity. his attention to dynamics is brilliant and his soul has poured out every millimeter of that guitar.
This is insane. Julian is the Lage of our time!
This deserves more appreciation, man Julian plays with so much soul, the guitar is just an extension of himself along with Jorge
This absolutely blows my mind. Julian's playing is more soulful than any I've ever seen before. You can so tell that the music comes straight from him. This video is now my new favorite video on youtube.
That's one of the best guitarist's I've ever seen/heard!
I’m Still watching years and years later!!!
Thank you. It's quite a special musical moment.
After more than 32,000 views, I'm happy to say you are the very first to have commented on the missing chord. Think of it like a complete your own adventure story! Imagine my regret when I learned that the camera I was using automatically shut off after recording 10 minutes of video. But amazingly they were indeed at the very end of this piece, and I felt extremely lucky to have witnessed it and shared it. Thanks for the note.--Steve Paul
This is just too awesome...
I've been watching this video for about 7 years now and I'm still noticing something new every time. Julian today has evolved throughout the years so wonderfully.
Thanks for watching (again and again). I'm thrilled that I was in the right place at the right time and captured something so wonderful and guitar-inspiring. And I just noticed you helped push it past 100,000 views. Cheers.
This might be my most favorite vid on youtube, keep coming back to it too often :D It's just too amazing to hear and see...

I have heard this I think over a hundred times now and I still keep getting blown away by this! It's just too incredible hearing improv at this level! So much stuff going on, yet they manage to not overplay! Thanks for haring this!

This might be the best thing ever. Wow.
Giocano con la musica in un modo unico. Grande sensibilità e gusto oltre ad una forte conoscenza del linguaggio jazz ed altro.
this is definitely the greatest video ever put on youtube
Wonderful
This is even more definitely the greatest video ever put on youtube
That's it boys. I'm hooked.
thnaks guys, we all need people that go over everything and just "play". Amazing
I love it so much, it hurts me that just before the end the video finished T.T , but im amazed by how skilled and how harmonious souned jorge roeder i didnt knew him until saw this and other video before, julian lage i have been watching him for a while now but never ceases to amaze me.
I'm continually amazed at the number of people still watching and responding to this video. Thanks for all your comments. On the question below about the "bizarre fax noise," that was a cash register at the bar.
I watch this video constantly (and I watch it less butt the Iowa Taken video is also amazing), I have to thank you for not only being at the show, but recording it and sharing it. Thank you.
In all seriousness, thank you for posting this video. It is magic
The musical conversation between these two is very genuine and that lick at 3:15 is just deadly.
I just came back after 4-5 years since I first listened to this. Incredibly beautiful and satisfying to rediscover music and listen to it in depth soundwise. Still gives me chills and smiles. Love these cats and love this music. Much love to everyone reading this❤️
I still watch it from time to time and am always moved by the joy Julian and Jorge bring to the music and to the act of just playing together. Thanks for watching. I'm still blown away by the size of the audience this thing has reached. Cheers to all.
Julian Lage is so good it's frightning!
Julian is brilliant! WOW!!
He doesn't ever go the easy route and just swing eight notes, its always so creative, elastic, playful and fearless.
I am soooo incredibly fortunate to be able to see him March 2013 at UC Davis, CA at the Mondavi Arts Center! I cannot wait! As a fellow guitarist who grew up with the likes of Django, Charlie Christian, Johnny Smith, George Van Eps, Joe Diorio, Tal Farlow, and countless more, Julian does everything they do as if he were a clone of them all. Simply incredible player and new-found favorite.
Nothing short of world class virtuosity
Grande!
Sorry for the opening ad. Hijacked by UA-cam without my consent. I purposely chose not to monetize the video, because Julian holds the copyright and graciously allowed me to post it. Clearly it has become immensely popular and essential watching for any fan of guitar, bass, music and jazz. That is all. Again, thanks for watching.
God DAMN
Scary good
fantastici
Nice of you all to say. Thanks for watching.
Great players!
very very nice
💕💕💕💕
What a Great Tone from both Guitar & Bass...However that Guitar sound is Magnificent...Julian Lage is Amazing !!!
Just me or did the sound of a receipt being printed totally work with the arrangement and tamber of the guitars entrance. Solid, they planned it, I'm convinced.
Thanks for the comment. I'm blown away this video has gotten so much response. Cheers.
Julian's counterpoint going across the fingerboard horizontally BLOWS ME AWAY!
Thanks so much for the upload, Steve!
Yessir.
Gaw damn soooog gooood
I'm sure this is the greatest video ever on the internet site youtube :-)
Wow
Holy SHHHHHHHHHHHH
What strikes me is how JL always seems so happy when playing while PM always seems to be in pain. I love both of their music.
Awesome. And he looks like Dennis from always sunny!
Thanks for all the fine comments.
all good
the youtube algorithm👏 thank you
wow
one of the best players alive right now
Okay, it's now a fact, Julian Lage you are my new favorite guitarist of all times.
Ahhh I'm still waiting for the last chord!!!
That is in the "Zone". Real music. Not for the faint of heart.
Bass player is killin' it
The dissonance at 5:00 ish is really unique. Semi-tone somewhere in between the interval of a flat second.
New pants here for everybody!.. we all know how much we need it.
@jazzsaavy I was wrong, it's an original tune that he plays that hasn't been put on cd.
ufffffffffff
If I'm watching this, I'm smiling.
@jazzsaavy it's on his first album. Sounding Point
What gives! Charlie Mingus is alive!
the power of alternate picking
wonderful bass playing, dyads, improve,...great feel!
4:39 yeah i pretty much crapped my pants...
Julian is god
That thumb down is from Rusty Cooley!!!
I wonder what the last chord was... F min 6 #9 #11 Maj 7 over G? Any other extentions we could add? Haha
