No, you don't install from the internet. That is a really good way of breaking your installation.
Use flatpak if things are not in the distros repo. There is also snaps, but I do not feel comfortable recommending them...
Only install a tarball or deb package if you know what you are doing and realize that the package manager will NOT KEEP IT UPDATED OR INFORM YOU OF UPDATES! You have to make sure that you manage security patches for that software manually!
It can also introduce dependency issues with the rest of your system. So KNOW what you are doing if you do things like that.
That is why you want to use a package manager for installing things and never have to worry about above.
Glad you will stick to linux, your will have to start shaving multiple times per day unless you want to develop a neckbeard now. xD

@@MKKomputing There are as in anything, exceptions. Ventoy comes to mind as an example.
A good rule of thumb is this order:
Distro repo > flatpack > other sources.
I do not include git repos here, because that is a beast of its own that opens up a whole new universe when you figure out how that works.
Combine that with a pyenv, and you have the knowledge to run AI:s locally. xD

@@elrondforwin nvidia is launching the 560 driver and it will support some more stuff. Use an arch based distro or arch itself for fast updates. Fedora will receive the updates in a week or two later. Also, you need to manually enable the repositories on fedora for nvidia drivers.
You could put some kernel parameters or compile a new Linux kernel to fix the underclocking issue. Obviously, you wouldn't be able to build your own kernel would ya? Just change the kernel parameters and for a better Linux experience, install it around August or September or the best time is when kubuntu 24.10 releases. By then, drivers would've been fixed by default .
For most people who want to use fedora, use the kde version not the gnome one. Fractional scaling is not there. Triple frame buffering isn't great on gnome. Use only if you are ok with 100% display scaling.

It's awesome to see you complete this challenge! I found this channel around the same time I started integrating everything over. I settled into Pop OS and have been finalizing the process of moving everything over. Aside from edge cases like having no audio in streaming while using Discord or having to use an office program outside of MS Office, everything on Linux has been preferable for my need cases. I've historically covered psychology & horror content on my channel a while ago, but felt like I couldn't really make content for a while cause of my old Macbook that I saved for just that dying off and Windows not really offering the layout or compatibility for things I needed. Windows just never seemed to fit much of what I needed on a creative front. That's not even to mention things like Microsoft Recall or Adobe's recent policy changes presenting themselves as nightmares to me for my irl psychology-related work. While I still rely on Windows for niche entertainment-related things during my downtime, I've almost entirely moved my daily workflow and creative suite over to Linux and am not looking back. The .deb and Steam beta update I cleared up in a video talking about things I’ve gotten wrong or failed to mention. And for the DRM issue, I tried it on my own to see if it would let me watch Peacock, and it still didn’t work. Do I get things wrong from time to time? Sure, like I said, I’m still learning. But it’s not usually something that’ll steer people in the wrong direction and I make sure I correct myself when I do get something wrong. Should I be the end all be all of information regarding Linux? No, absolutely not. I don’t pretend to be an expert by any means. But I also don’t think I’m a bad source of information either.

Thanks for the video. I'm working on my Linux transition, Fedora with KDE Plasma has been nice so far! Only things keeping me from switching are:
    1) the complete dearth of cloud storage options that work well. Someone suggested pCloud, but it's really expensive for little space.
    2) fonts in Chrome are super weird, especially the tiny font used in the address bar.
    3) Gtk / GNOME apps don't obey my dark theme, which is actually critical because of my extremely light sensitive eyes. :(
    4) a decent mail/calendar client that does the dark theme on messages.
    5) Overall lagginess in the screen and launching stuff.
    6) "Slider bar" controls in the UI are extremely hard to see in dark mode. There's no visual contrast.
    7) VLC is strangely laggy. I have a dedicated AMD graphics card, so no idea why.
But I'm working on these. I hope I can transition by next year when my Windows 10 goes out of support.
However, one niggle in your video: I've used Windows for 30+ years. I haven't had to install a printer driver in ~15 years. They always just pop up, no issues at all. I have no idea what you're doing wrong.

    • @MKKomputing
      @MKKomputing  8 днів тому

Awesome on your Linux transition! I definitely hear you on a few of those issues. Especially the dark theme sync and mail client. A few of my apps don’t always obey dark theme. I don’t have the same light sensitivity but it’s still annoying, and the best mail client on Linux right now is Thunderbird and it’s super outdated and not that easy to set up. I think a lot of my printer issues come from using HP Printers mostly (not my choice, when I got my own place I bought a Brother laser printer) and I always had to download some proprietary software for some reason or another, usually to scan stuff properly. On top of that I ALWAYS ended up having some kind of issue at some point when printing. Usually the print queue would freeze up on me and I would have to do some kind of combination of clearing the queue, restarting my computer, and turning my printer on and off.

    • @Christobanistan

@@MKKomputing Weird about the print queue. I used to work at HP as a dev many years ago and, of course all the printers were their own. But somehow there were never any technical issues with them. 😂
I've heard that when Linux drivers do tend to work better, it's because they lack a lot of advanced features that come with the Windows drivers, I think. IOW, they speak basic protocols, and eliminate the inevitable bugginess of fancy features.
      Anyway, good luck.

So have you tried opening a private browsing tab, switching the user agent, and then go to the website to see if it works? If it does, all you need to do is set the user agent permanently and clear your browser cookies. Normal everyday browsing won't be affected at all if you just leave the User Agent set to Windows 11/Chrome.
By the way, the 3 apps for video calls work on all OSes because they're all just basically Chrome lol (except maybe Zoom though)

@@MKKomputing yeah as soon as the UI is drastically changed and doesn't seem to follow any standards like Microsoft's legacy, UWP and whatever they now have layouts, macOS's Aqua layout or the respective Linux DE's layout, then you can be 99% certain that the application is basically a browser, because HTML and CSS is basically complete freedom to the developers when it comes to the UI. But there's a catch.... browsers and their engines are patched each week at the very least, and application updates which include those patches are delivered very frequently. But these apps that rely on a specific browser engine (Chromium being the most prevalent) don't actually update their underlying engine that often. This comes with the advantage of the UI looking the same and has the exact same functionality across application updates, but security patches are left out as well. The Arch Linux package for Discord for example was horribly outdated for some time, I believe due to some licensing issues. But even then, the upstream application still used some basically ancient version of Chromium. It's kinda scary how many apps are browsers. Adobe Reader, Steam (or any game launcher for that matter).... really weird. But weirder is that the most native apps I've seen were Windows or macOS apps.

I just want to point out that using APT (Ex.: sudo apt install app / sudo apt update / sudo apt upgrade) its not a universal command on linux, APT is common on Debian based distros (not sure if apt its avaliable on ALL debian distros btw) but will not work in Arch based distros like SteamOS for example, where the default package manager is Pacman. I'm not an expert on linux but I think that u should clarify this on another video to avoid problems. Good luck with the channel.

I noticed that you pronounced "sudo" as "pseudo" (which I also personally prefer) but some pronounce it as "soo-doo" because it stands for "Super User Do ..."; so I thought you were going to note that it works similarly to the "Run as Administrator" mode for the Windows CMD.EXE terminal, but for just a single command so you aren't encouraged to stay in admin mode during normal usage.

So, I took it out to try and keep the video as accurate as possible.

For day to day use Linux Mint is perfectly fine. When it comes to gaming though I still find myself having to play Terminal Simulator far too often. Don't get me wrong, gaming on Linux is far better than it used to be but when things do go wrong it tends to be more difficult to know where the problem lies; is it the game kicking up the error or is the problem because of the translation layer?
The terminal is also something the average user should NEVER need to touch but as you noted sometimes it's an absolute necessity.
It's been said for over 20 years now that 'this is the year of the Linux desktop' and I still think it isn't quite ready for the mainstream yet but for the first time I actually think it soon might be.

The work being done on the user friendly distros has been incredible over the last 10 or so years. I remember having to manually configure display drivers and other hardware drivers via the shell when I was first learning about Linux using OpenSUSE so many years ago. about 15 years ago I was able to game decently on Linux using WINE.. 6:28 Please don't use dpkg directly, it's a low level tool. Use apt instead, like in 'sudo apt install path_to_package.deb'.
The difference is in how they handle dependencies. Unlike MS Windows where installers usually ship everything they need bundled inside, and as the result 20 applications can install 20 different versions of the same library, Linux packages usually just tell the system what they need, and it installs those other packages automatically, and as the result 20 programs can share one library instead of each bringing their own.
apt handles those dependencies automatically while dpkg does not and just prints errors when they are not available, so unless you want to role play a package manager it's better to use apt. :)

    • @MKKomputing
      @MKKomputing  9 днів тому

Because not everyone has a computer that runs hundreds of watts that they might want to watch Streamed content on. And because I usually stream tv shows while I’m doing something else and it’s a lot easier to just open up a second browser tab on my PC, where it’s already feeding audio through my headphones, than to use a separate device to do the same thing.

@@MKKomputing Fair, but are you using a 2nd monitor for the streaming? If so, a streaming stick could be plugged into that monitor. That's one way to avoid the linux issue.

@@MKKomputing I use Arch. It's a clean base, so you can customise it as you wish. If you are going to look towards arch, Garuda is a good Arch based distro which is gaming centric. It has a lot of GUI menus to help you set it up how you want as well. There is also ArcoLinux, which is Arch based too, and also worth checking out.
My suggestion, if you are going to try Arch, is to go in at the deep end. Arch isn't as scary as it's made out to be, even installing it isn't as difficult as you may thinks. You have 2 ways to install pure Arch. Following the wiki guide and doing it manually, which can teach you a fair bit about disk partitioning and such. Or by using the Arch iso's built in "archinstall" script, which simplifies the install. KSKRoyal here on youtube has some great tutorials for installing both ways, worth checking out. The arch install script allows you to also install Nvidia drivers and a desktop environment at the point of install. Which again simplifies everything to get up and running. The install script can install Gnome, KDE, Hyprland, Sway, LXQt, XFCE, Cinnamon (and a couple others). So you can basically have any flavour of desktop environment that you want.
If you are unsure about trying pure Arch, its worth trying inside a virtual machine at least. All Linux distros are considered as a type 1 hypervisor for running virtual machines, as they have KVM in the linux kernal. You want to look towards QEMU/KVM + Virt-Manager for running virtual machines in linux.
Sorry for the info dump, great video.

    .tar is not like zip.
.tar cuts files into equally sized pieces or something, the actual compression algorithm deals with the deduplication (replacing duplicate bits with links or something).
    .tar.gz .tar.bz2 .tar.xz are equivalents to .zip
Also .zip is pretty bad, the compression rate is not good. Linux has a lot better stuff.
    .tar.zst is the future
