    Appreciate this correction video. Also glad to see you've been using Pop OS, I feel like its been underrated by a lot of Linux channels recently because it's just been on the LTS release of Ubuntu (even though it's still actively updated, more so than even Ubuntu is). Always had the best experience with Pop, much more so than actual Ubuntu lol.

    • @MKKomputing

      Of course! Gotta own up to my mistakes! 😁 Yeah, I’ve always loved using Pop. I just find it to be a really nice experience! Although, I have been considering giving a Red Hat Linux-Based Distro a shot, like Nobara or Bazzite.

    • @nixiam
      @nixiam 3 місяці тому

      @@MKKomputing I hope you did your research before even considering Bazzite. It's an immutable distro, changing some things or installing some software ranges from unnecessary complex to nearly impossible. Fedora is already the middle ground between bleeding edge and conservative, having debian and arch on the opposite sides of the spectrum.

    • @TimothyDuran
      @TimothyDuran 3 місяці тому

      Same camp for me! I've looked into and tried different distros within a Ventoy flashdrive, but my favorite so far has been Pop. I just wanted an escape from everything that reminds me of Windows at first, and this was it. I'm open to using Mint or even trying an Arch-based distro like Garuda, now that I feel like I have a more-or-less viable alternative to Windows 11. Unfortunately, I'll likely avoid everything KDE related, as Windows 11 kind of poisoned that well for me.

      @@MKKomputing Consider Fedora 40 - Nobara is okay but with delayed updates run by one guy, and Bazzite is something known as Immutable, which just like the OS on the Steam Deck, means it has a locked down system filesystem. I'm not saying no to either but I think with Bazzite especially it helps to look up what Immutable or Atomic desktops/distros means and whether or not you want to give that a shot.

    Btw in regards to the DaVinci issue, you can use ``ln -s "full path to drive" "full path to the video folder DaVinci sees"``, this will make a soft link to the drive allowing you to "escape" that folder, soft links don't work the same as windows, and programs can't actually tell the difference between that and a folder
    Alternatively, you could also simply mount the drive into that folder instead, but that's more complicated and can be inconvenient for using with other programs
    I think there are ways to do soft links in the file manager, but I'm sorry to say I don't personally use them too often for things like that so I wouldn't know, but if you figured it out then a soft link from a file manager will be the same as the command I gave

    I’d just like to interject for a moment. What you’re refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
    Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.
    There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!

    • @MKKomputing
      @MKKomputing  3 місяці тому

      Huh, I actually didn’t know that! That’s pretty interesting! Thanks! 😁 Yeah, Linux is used in a lot of different places that people don’t realize. Android is built on the Linux Kernel and MacOS is built off Unix, which is the same operating system that inspired Linux. Not exactly the same as being built on Linux, I know, but they work very similar!

    • @marcusjohansson668
      @marcusjohansson668 3 місяці тому

      Yeah, no...
      That USED to be the case like +20 years ago when Linus was developing the first versions.
      Today it would be like 0,01% of that old GNU code left in the kernel, everything has been rewritten.
      The GNU folks really WANT that to be true though. xD
      GNU is a cool project, but it has no real work case.
      Look at canoebo... ehm, I mean GNU boot for example. xD
      (please do not get angry with me if you have some kind of relation to GNU, I am teasing here)

    Great video, but pretty sure most games these days run EOS EAC and the Kamu version of EAC (the older one) worked on Linux also. Apex Legends used that for long time before switching to EOS one. One thing to note. If you are recording Gameplay videos with OBS and you are using X11 session instead of Wayland session. Then use the window capture (and select the game) feature instead of fullscreen. Gives much better performance on GPU demanding games.

    I just remembered
    Windows has .appx and .msix packages that work pretty much the same way as .deb on your system. That's not to say anyone actually uses these formats, but Microsoft did make an attempt to do something similar.
    Windows also has package managers - winget comes preinstalled as a backend for the microsoft store app - but once again, it's barely used.

    • @MKKomputing
      @MKKomputing  3 місяці тому

      Huh, that’s interesting! Wonder why that never took off. 🤔

    • @ulroxvladtepes4023
      @ulroxvladtepes4023 3 місяці тому

      Yeah, winget is really good, however on some older windows 10 machines winget does not come preinstalled, You can find several winget install scripts online to fix that problem.
      The reason why it never took off is because windows users are not prone to using the command line to do anything. Powershell is actually an incredible well made CLI for windows, where you can do just about as much as in bash. It's created in the image of bash and unix, for it professionals who needed to have access to a proper command line. I might be annoyed with a lot of things microsoft has done, but powershell really is something else. Powershell is also available on linux.
      As an IT supporter, if I make a script for someone in a cli, I've noticed noone will ever use it in my company. That's windows users for you. However if you put in the extra effort and create a graphical user interface, then people will start to use it.
      On top of that, linux has a much better architecture and support for its command line for installing packages through the command line. You can find so many fun and interesting things that way. You really can't do the same on windows, because the amount of 'cool things' on there is very limited, as most users just prefer to use a gui.
      It's a big difference in mentality, but I'd argue that linux has come a very long way in the creation of user friendly gui's nowadays. You 'mostly' don't need to use the cli. There's oftentimes some other way around problems, but you will have an easier time if you learn how to use the cli. For instance, I installed linux mint on my mothers laptop, and she pretty much just used the thing for accessing the internet and reading mails / some document editing.
      That's another thing linux does very well, reviving old hardware. You can save a lot of money by putting linux on a dying computer, because linux is more respectful of your computers resources. So there's a ton of value in knowing linux that way too.

    Hahaha dude, you are also a bit crazy.
    Starting with Linux, directly into Windows games and Davinci resolve, both notorious for not working.
    You might want to learn a bit about sandboxing, running stuff through Bottles or the Davinci Resolve Flatpak script.
    This gives extra security as all that proprietary software cannot access your system.
    I mean, Linux Distros are open source for a reason. Putting Google Chrome, Steam, Davinci resolve on them may work, but you lose like all the benefits of trust

I’ve used Chrome FOREVER and all my PC games are on Steam and it’s what I used to play with my friends. I don’t want to get rid of them. Although m, I have been toying with the idea of making a video on Chrome alternatives soon, as I actually wouldn’t mind switching off that. 😁

    Welllllllllll you were half correct. A deb file is basically a setup dot exe or MSI file, and the actual program is an ELF executable file with some arbitrary extension or none at all, while on Windows it's a PE executable file with some arbitrary extension (most commonly exe and msi). Shell scripts (batch / ps1 on Windows, most commonly dot sh on Linux) are interpreted by their respective interpreter (cmd / powershell on Windows, bash / zsh / whatever else there is on Linux) but are marked as executables themselves on both OSes, even though technically they are not executable in the sense of an ELF or PE executable. The latter instruct the OS to "run me", while shell scripts instruct the OS to "run interpreter xyz to run me".
    Edit: Come to think of it more... a deb file is much more of an archive rather than anything else. A deb is not executable, it needs to be installed via dpkg. A setup exe or MSI file is itself a PE file. Major difference.

    Regarding kernel level anti-cheat I would even add that there are two different kinds of implementations. One of them checks your drivers and either doesn't let you play the game if something is not known to the anti-cheat software or it bans you some time after playing with these.
    However Vanguard from Riot Games goes a step further. It is required to be running from start of the boot process and it will simply stop all your drivers that aren't known as harmless to the anti-cheat software. That may also prevent you from using some arbitrary driver from a printer or some input device in worst case. Because it actively messes with your system.
    So yeah, definitely be cautious with kernel level anti-cheat software.

  • @sociallyferal4237
    @sociallyferal4237 3 місяці тому

    Did you install Davinci via flatpak or snap? I was testing Linux last weekend and found that a number of pop_os store apps used them. For steam this meant not seeing other drives. For chrome & vivaldi this manifested in not remembering my last save locations for folders and always starting in a temp folder. (Though installed from deb from their wepages seemed to bypass this issue) Maybe your DaVinci is doing something similar?

    one thing to note is that it is more rare for a non-kernel level anticheat to be used, Easy Anti-Cheat, BattleEYE, Vanguard, Ricochet, they are all kernel level, battleEYE and EAC work on linux because they made a user level Linux binary that steam launches when running through proton
    the only Anti-cheats (that i can think of) that are user level are Roblox's anticheat, VAC, and Overwatch 2's
    OW2 is an awful game now but they do have by far the best user level anticheat and i respect them for it, its why OW can run with Wine only, also there is 1 guy at blizzard who makes sure that they don't break wine support

    Also on the first point, yeah .deb/rpm/whateverelse is not like .exe I mean you can't even Open them as an app like you can an exe, I just want to add though if you're planning on trying a distro that uses .rpm like fedora or opensuse like me, there's a nifty (but barbaric) terminal app you can use called Alien, what it does is basically turns .deb files into .rpm files and vice versa, though only the apps, your distro still needs to have the dependency (or you can also just use alien on those dependency but I don't recommend this) this is how I got apps like Free Download Manager to work on Opensuse.
