  • We've used Memtest86 in a few diagnostic videos, but RAM failure (or at least faulty RAM that you can still POST with) is fairly rare - so we've never seen errors. We finally had an example come in, albeit a single error example.

    Hey man, thanks for the video, it helps tons of people.
    I was hoping you can help me.
    I have 2 sticks of 8GB running dual channel and after running a few tests with memtest86, i found that its inconsistent.
    Initially, running the test with both sticks for 4 passes (took 3 hours) gave me about 7 errors.
    Then i ran both sticks on the first slot which showed 0 issues.
    Problem is, i went to the other slot, I got to 5/8 passes with about 10 errors, so naturally, i thought this was the slot, BUT, the second stick i tried in this slot got to 7/8 so far and there are no issues.
    What do i do at this point? Do i keep running the same tests?

    Hi, so I just started using this program cause my computer has been having google chrome crashes, random crashes and blue screen crashes basically all the time now. I tested a stick first and it passed 1 without errors but the second one already has 2821 errors and it's been 4mins and 40 seconds. I'm guessing that's why my pc been having crashes? (Used the ram sticks on the same slot)
    Edit: Took 49mins for the first pass and 2871 errors on the second stick. What are your thoughts?

    If there are 1 or more errors detected in the memtest86, BSOD cause while setup the OS.

      Yes but if the RAM shows an error on the first pass then there's no point in carrying on. Your RAM stick is faulty. You only continue to do more passes when the RAM shows no errors with each pass.

      If the RAM is easily accessible without voiding the warranty, you could try just re-seating the RAM. Just in case it's an assembly issue. If not, I'd go back to the shop and ask them to swap it out.

    Hello Adamant, so I'm in a bit of a problem and was hoping you could provide some input which I believe you are the right person to get it from. I've been watching your channel for quite a long time now, which started months ago as I kept coming across BSOD out of nowhere while I played Apex Legends at first, but then it started happening even in Google Chrome. My device; ACER Nitro 5 AN515-54-761. I came across the first video of yours that I ever saw on memtest, and ran it, only to find so many errors that memtest decided to stop, saying too many errors.
    (my laptop's temperature had always shown me above 90 Celsius while gaming from the day I bought it, i believed that was normal, till i googled and found out it was not, i then went into settings and manually turned off CPU turboboost, which keeps the temperatures in 70s now, idk if those high temps damaged the ram or something, so i have just permanently turned turbo boost off)
    My device was under warranty, so I gave it to the service centre, which gave it back to me saying it was a software problem and i received it wiped clean, new windows installed, basically complete formatting and re-installation. I was confused as memtest had shown me so many errors, yet they said it was just software. Fast forward a couple weeks, BSOD starts coming again during gaming but difference is now my warranty has expired. Now I am free to open up the Laptop and replace things as needed.
    I'm no tech specialist, but from what I have done, my guess is a RAM hardware problem. But since it's just a guess, I think being a specialist, you might have some view point which I might be missing.
    So my plan is as follows, and I hope you can provide some input as to whether you think, this is the way to go now: My device has 2 RAM slots: each holding SK Hynix HMA81GS6JJR8N-VK 2666 speed. I plan on first taking the laptop apart and removing one ram stick, and running memtest. and then the other. basically what you did in this video. if i find memtest running faulty for both sticks, I plan on replacing them with HyperX Impact DDR4 HX426S15IB2K2 2666MHz CL15.
    Is there anything else I should check before getting the new RAM? the last thing i want is to install the new ram and encounter the endless memtest errors again. I'm scared to mess up my PC forever.

    • @Adamant_IT
      @Adamant_IT  3 роки тому +1

      Sounds like you're on the right track. Sometimes there's no way to know if it's really the RAM until you put different RAM in there... But one indicator you can look for is that _two_ faulty RAM modules is fairly uncommon. So if you test the modules one at a time and find one bad, one good, then replacing the RAM is basically a sure-thing at that point.

    Hi there I have just built my pc today and it was working fine for hours and then all of a sudden started to crash time after time again. I then ran memtest to find 65000 errors on 2 sticks of ram that are less than a day old. I have reset the CMOS along with the bios I have also ran the windows memory diagnostic test and it does say there is fault in the hardware somewhere. Whats your opinion on the matter, I have new sticks on the way on Wednesday so hopefully that fixes it but i have a feeling there is more to it than just replacing the sticks.

    • @jamieholmes6379
      @jamieholmes6379 6 років тому

      I took both the sticks out this morning and swapped the places of them and then booted the system up. To my surprise the system booted and continued to stay on. I was then nervous to even try the windows memory diagnostic test and the memtest but I let the computer stay on for about an hour then I retested. On memtest I went from having 65,000 errors to absolutely none and the same with the windows test that showed I had hardware failure, both have just disappeared. Hopefully with all being well the system stays like this and there will be no memory/ram problems from here on out. Strange to think that simply just swapping the sticks has somehow cleared the errors, am writing this to you now with the pc being on the last 3 hours with heavy game titles etc being run, so far so good.
