How to test computer memory to determine if it's bad, MemTest86 is software that is used to test memory Ram with different algorithms and test patterns. Its free to use and is a great way to test memory if your having errors, BSOD, PC crashing or the computer keeps freezing. these could be sign of a bad memory module.
How long to run memtest? I would say you want to do a minimum of 4 passes and if you get errors after or before this time, stop the scan early and replace or swap out the memory.
How do you fix a bad memory module? You don't. you replace the memory if any errors are show after scanning with MemTest86
The same testing method is use for laptop and desktop ram.

Glad you pointed out that slots or pins on memory card could just need cleaning. I've run across that with old machines and used RAM. You always take chances buying used RAM cards but some clients can't afford a lot. More to the point I was getting at when using second hand RAM is a stick may not even be recognized when first slotted, you switch to another to try it which may not work then try the first one again and suddenly it's fine just because you've cleaned up the slot and made better contact.
Iso-propyl alcohol is great for the most part but sometimes it takes metal on metal abrasion to actually clean before good contact can be made. Similar to car battery cable connections
So my question is "what other cleaning methods would you suggest">Is there any sort of pin cleaner that is a basically slot with some sort of mild abrasive or vice versa is there a RAM stick that has cleaning abrasive that you can insert into a slot several times to clean the contacts in the slot.
Thinking back to the days of usinh head cleaner cassettes and (ahem) 8-track tape players.

TBH I don't use memtest86 at all if I can help it, I like the swap and and test method, its much quicker.
very true swapping is much faster but some client like to see how you test memory what I then do fire up memtest86 and take a screenshot
thanks Brian, memtest wasn't too clear on their webby how to test with their program, but you gave clear instructions, now to test what is wrong, whether it be the i3 kaby lake cpu, the msi b150m bazooka mobo or the HyperX 2400mhz 2x4gb sticks (downclocked to 2133mhz because intel are greedy and won't let you OC basic chips!)

I have a question
I am only getting a problem warning with two ramsticks installed. (in the windows RAM tester)
First i thought it might be because one stick is damaged but that wasnt the case (i put both of them in the middle slot)
Then i thought it might be a problem with the motherboard slot 3
Then i reinstalled one ram stick in slot 3
That said there was no problem
So what is now faulty?
How to i boot into memtest in bios or in the boot menu and how do i get back into windows 10 after the test on a msi z170a gaming m5
I NEED SOME ADSVISE, I HAVE 4 MEMORY STICK for a total of 32GB. I can't remove them to do a one by one memory test because my CPU fan is to large and it blocks the single memory sticks that I have to use to do the individual memory test. It will be a hassle because I would need to remove and re install the large CPU fan and probably re apply thermal paste CPU over and over again. How many circles or pass do I have to go for 4 install memory sticks?
We use it all the time, but not individually because we turn out new machines so fast, is there anything out that indicates what dim is bad if multiple sticks are installed?

Hey Brian. Can you tell me is there something in the software in windows 10 ( current version), Is there something of a switch that will disable the internet in safe mode with networking. This most assuredly is not a hardware issue ( PC or Modem)and I have actually try to resolve through microsoft help desk with no solution. Still awaiting a call from one of there elevated case tech's. This is a home PC with it's own dedicated modem. using the hardline connection. I have also did a " Fix" reinstall of windows 3 x as described by you in a previous video.

Hi Brain, thank you so much to the video just figured out my issues and it was the Ram, I am just curious is the Ram repairable by the local shop or it has to be replaced? As I recon the gold plate chip got burn off a little. Any recommendations would be ideal thank you!
All RAM manufactured by known brands should have a life time replacement policy. As long as the company still stocks it and as long as the company is still in business.
How long will it run will it shut off on its own or give you a list of faults?

I have seen that people get different INTERFACE of memtest 86 like a big display with many options, and them there are these videos with a old interface, and thats happening to me too :O
Don't get it why. i have a ryzen pc.
I believe the older memtest86 interface version (e.g. v4.3.7) has the blue background. The newer version has the black background. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Nah, just use Memtest for windows from hcidesign. It does a much quicker job then Memtest86(+) looping test 5 or 8.
Recently TechPowerUp also released a brandnew memtest program: MemTest64
