I personally think no pattern or morph is more important then any severe issues that we could be preventing. There are soooo many beautiful snakes and we should know when to take a step back and retire certian morphs.

While I disagree completely with continuing Spider lines, I'm very happy that people are bringing up other morphs with issues! I think the reason spider gets picked is because it's EXTREMELY popular because of how long it's been around, so it's just the biggest target, and because so many breeders don't warn people about the wobble. It's easy to see that a snake has bug eyes, or a duck bill, but it's much harder to tell a snake wobbles when it's in a deli cup at a reptile show. I wouldn't dislike it nearly as much if every spider morph seller warned customers that their baby snake may have a severe problem with eating and with moving around as it gets older.

You don't know until you try. it's often in the anomalies that a lot of our understanding of genetics is made. and as Chris pointed out some quirks seem to be specific to certain lines, and others don't really bother the snake, they just don't look like what we expect.

It is a tough think breeding any kind of animals like the cats and dogs with the smooshed face or tiny little legs . I breed fancy pigeons and there are strange types that can have problems . On the plus side these animals wouldn't exist if they weren't domestic animals. They will never have even a remote possiblity of going extinct like some others do . So evolutionary wise they are winning. Also the purpose for videos like this is so people don't repeat the same mistakes breeding no viable animals. Most like 99% of the people who raise animals do it because of a love of them and there beauty so there care is utmost in mind . I check mine constantly for temp , humidity, cleanliness, and have a fit if they have shed on feeding problems and correct anything immediately.

Dang! Wrote a whole long post hypothesizing about the relationship between the neurological and eye disorders to the coloration. I guessed it had to relate to some sort of transcription factor. Turns out I was right. Found a paper that goes over what little is currently known about ball python genetics. Also found a 2018 post looking for grad students to investigate the basis of ball python coloration. Hopefully someone will start publishing more in this field so a better understanding can be obtained.
One really interesting detail, turns out melanocytes (color bearing cells) develop from the neural crest, which also goes on to differentiate into neuronal tissues. Therefore, if there is something mutated in the transcription factor genes (genes that code for proteins that then regulate other genes) expressed in the neural crest, it is very likely that both the color and the neuronal function will be affected. It definitely points to the likely cause of the head wobble and eye hyper/hypotrophy. Kinks might also be somewhat linked, but to me it is a bit less obvious how.
It would be neat to get a much fuller view of the actual reasons behind the genetic defects and thereby perhaps develop methods of intervention that might be able to facilitate the breeding of healthy individuals with the desired patterns. Find ways to either decouple or ameliorate the neuronal effects from the pigmentation effects.
Here is the only paper I could find on the subject: www.hindawi.com/journals/abi/2016/1286510/

I have a leopard spider but luckily his wobble is minimum to none, it’s a result of retained sperm, he only wobbles slightly up and down when he moves suddenly or gets in strike position too fast and losses balance. I never plan on breeding him either way but luckily none of the babies suffered from severe or even mild wobble.

I've got an Axanthic Killerbee, we call her Wonton. I have noticed a wobble in her that is very slight, and it only happens on feeding day when she is moments away from feeding. There's also a major push in the working and molossar communities to move away from "show" standards and reintroduce healthy, functional dogs back into the lines. There are people working very hard to correct the breeding mistakes of the past. Let's hope it doesn't take the BP community as long to do the same.

Actually some bulldog breeds like the Carlin are starting to become illegal to produce, as their quality of life is only getting worse. Mouth problems can be associated in albino. There is such a thing as a small lower jaw like an overbite affect. But usually deformation can happen in the egg. Wrong incubation technique can cause deformation. Bad temps, humidity, things like that. I’ve seen terrible mouth deformation from a breeder where the mouth was completely sideways on the lower jaw sadly that is the truth in breeding so you have to do all your homework to prevent that as much as possible.

I was watching someone who said it's different localities they originated from and affects the overall size as adults. I don't know if that is accurate . I have a normal with the straight sides of the head and my banana and ivory have peanut shape curvy heads. Noticable different shapes. I decided on a corn snake instead of a python. I prefer their personality and when I started reaserching ball python morphs I was buffled.
I never found any problems with morphs in corn snake except someone writing on a forum about diffused having neurological issues however it's not confimed. I couldn't find any references or articles about it. Also a palmetto gene that causes bug eyes (I personaly think that they shouldn't be breed and sold to public, breeders should at least look into buyers because enlarged eyes could be a potentialy dangerous thing, their eye can be poked more easily) 95% of corn snakes morphs are reccesive.
When I started to look into ball python morphs I was shocked that so many morphs have poblems and that many super variants are lethal. It's really concerning that so many morphs have problems and people still breed them. I think that they should be breed in lab to preserve their genes and find a way to make them less dangerous or non-lethal. I would never breed a spider or any other morphs that can potenialy make animals life harder. Brachycephalic dogs are even worse the same goes for persian cats, because we made them like that. French bulldogs can't even breed naturaly without human intervension. I digress.
People are even less educated when it comes to scaleless snakes. Again if I even owned one I wouldn't breed it to get more scaleless or at least make sure that future owners have expirience. People don't understand the difference between scaleless ball pythons and colubrids. Colubrids even when scaleless have belly scales pythons DON'T. Some people really don't understand the gravity of this difference. I once read a post on forum made by a guy who wanted to get a scaleless ball python. People told him about it and how it's a huge difference but he was like "I never knew but I still want a scaleless". I was so angry at this guy.

Love your videos man, totally respect what your doing and look up to you brother. So just in the spirit of sharing information, addressing the Bannanna gene. Male Bannannas as you know will all be either, male makers, or female makers. Depending on which parent they inherited the Bannanna gene from. For example if you Breed a female Bannanna to normal male, then all the male Bannanna's in that clutch will be "female makers". Now when you breed that male down the road, then all the offspring he produces that carry the Bannanna gene, will be female. With about 93-97% accuracy. However, all the offspring he produces that DO NOT carry the Bannanna gene, will be male. Also with about 93%-97% accuracy. They won't actually be a 50 50 split.

I disagree with putting bananas on a list of morphs with problems. A sex linked gene isn't a problem. It causes absolutely no issues in the snakes and requires no extra work by the keeper. In fact, if it wasn't for the Banana, we wouldn't have realized that BPs are XY, instead of ZW.
I'd say a morph that gives us a major breakthrough in our understanding of a species, has zero health issues, does something entirely unique ("ripening" spots and sex linking), and gives us amazing combos, is the exact _opposite_ of a "problem morph."

None of the males she was bred to had any spider (which would be lethal crossed with champ anyway), and none of her babies have it. She does eat very well---a medium rat weekly, and always acts like she's starving when food is offered. She is no longer used as a breeder, last clutch was in 2019. Hey Chris 1st thank you for all the vids you do and all that editing, searching and info. Quick question what is a good age to start seeing kinks and others issues in Ball python morphs. Im afraid of being lied to at a store or a reptile expo.

    • @lanedj801

This is super late but maybe someone will see this. Kinks show up from the time they are hatched. It’s a visual defect born with. You will see a seized up curve somewhere so the best way to check is to hold it and have it crawl up and over a hand like it’s on hand treadmill that way the spine will straighten out over you hand in an arch. Kinks are associated with a left or right shift so if it crawls directly over something you should see that shift like arching to check for scoliosis. Any age you should be able to see it.

My BEL ball python has a round dilated pupil on right eye, and a normal slit pupil on her left. Her normal eye, the pupil adjusts depending on ambient light, but her round dilated pupil remains dilated even if I shine a flashlight onto it. Is this a common genetic problem of bell with mojave and lesser parents? Please help
