    I so totally agree with ball pythons being addictive. Went from 1 last November to 11 this November with our first eggs on their way. Hoping to get to the point in the next 5 years that we can open our own store. One thing I wish we had done differently is decided to breed BEFORE we got the majority of our snakes. That being said, I think we did pretty good on quality and once we decided we were going to breed, started focusing on what we wanted to produce. Really enjoy watching your videos.

    I’ve been debating breeding ball pythons as a little side hobby. I used to breed bearded dragons but they take up way to much space and are way to much work. I’ve been doing a lot of research and you have the best videos by far!! I’ve saved every single video I’ve watched from you about breeding. Keep it up!

    I have 2 daughters, 7 and 9. They are fantastic with Monty! Anytime he’s out I am with him but they can handle him and enjoy his company! They watch the feedings with both our snakes, the 9 year old holds him for me when I’m tidying up his enclosure (he’s a brat and trashes his viv nightly, we find it endearing so it’s not a chore!) and now they tell all their friends about him and explain his care, how to handle him and to not fear snakes!
    It’s been a great experience!

    Those single gene hets adult females are cheap. That's the route I'm looking at for my daughter's snake hobby. Breed those for the possible visuals and het markers for hold backs and sell off the babies to help pay for supplies. You've given out some great advice, she's starting out with 2 gene animals and we're watching morph market on certain genes for sub adults that'll be ready to breed sooner. Do the math on rats, prices are pretty descent especially when you buy multiple snakes from one breeder. In one purchase we saved about $450 by buying two totally different gene animals from one breeder. I've noticed when you buy from a breeder two or more snakes that will possibly pair up, prices go up.

    I'd love to chime in on your question of the day! I also have an 8 year old and she was curious yet somewhat scared of reptiles. Me wanting a snake in my life again got a male BEL. (My dream snake). I've obviously been the one to care for it (please dont leave care up to kids, they forget and get lazy) BUT I've taken advantage of the amazing educational opportunity. I've taught her biology and behavior and care of ball pythons, as well as gotten her over her fear with being able to pet and hold (with supervision of course) my snake. She even wants me to bring him to her class and teach them haha! I would recommend a BP for kids as far as size and handling goes, but please dont leave care 100% up to the child. Please care for it yourself but use it to teach your children how to care for them like showing proper ways to feed and clean the enclosure and stuff while doing it yourself. I say this due to the ball pythons tendency to be picky eaters and their humidty requirements. These are things I believe a small child just isnt capable of being responsible for.

    Great list!
    I would add, just from me watching so many uneducated people breeding snakes on UA-cam, is that:
    - Get some sort of education on how to take care of your snakes, and make sure you have a local vet that specializes in reptiles in case of an emergency before you breed.
    I actually had to give my ball python antibiotic shots, and I was SO lucky we had a local reptile vet. She had to sit me down and train me how to assist and force feed as well as how to give shots. Some vets also offer sessions on how to treat respiratory infections and other things as well.

    Hi Chris! I’ve got a question for you... regarding humidity and monitoring. I may be missing it, but I don’t see hygrometer probes in your rack tubs - do you not use a hygrometer?
    I don’t have a hygrometer in my ball python enclosure but I live in south Florida which is wretchedly humid, and my animal has a moist hide available to her at all times. I trust her to know if she wants more moisture. I’ve had her for a year and she has shed flawlessly every single time and is beautiful and healthy, so I don’t feel like humidity is an issue in my case, but I know the vast majority of hobbyists would keel over and die if they knew I don’t use a hygrometer.

    • @ChrisHardwickanimaladventures
      @ChrisHardwickanimaladventures  5 років тому +1

      I pretty much go by how the substrate feels, should be a solid mat with a dry top for coconut husk chip. If it dries out too much it gets loose and fluffy. I go by sheds, hygrometers in every tubs isn't possible.

    I have a plan for when I finally get settled enough to actually do this.. I want to get a piebald het for lavender albino and a lavender albino het for piebald.
    Its about 2000 ish dollars worth of animal if I just get one of each. Im super small scale so thats fine to start out with..
    Grow them up, and when they're ready I can produce 4 things. each at a 25% chance. My dream snake, Dreamsicle. Expensive and beautiful little snake. Lavenderalbino het piebald, piebald het lavender albino, and a normal thats het for both. Each of these little snakes is a decent price, so I should make a decent return on the first clutch and be able to work towards upgrades for my animals and just more animals in general. Small to start but.. idk.. I feel like its a fairly solid idea. Ive been browsing around and looking and the prices for them seems to be pretty constant. I really want to work with dreamsicle because it is by far the most beautiful snake I have ever seen with that bright white and yellows and oranges. Eventually I want to work in Yellow belly. They make the orange even stronger. But that would be after I had a decent start with a few actual dreamsicles.
