Image a world where traditional creature stop-motion for big budget movies survived 5-10 years more... long enough to have take advantage of motion tracking and modern digital compositing. What a fun alternative film universe that would have been... Loved the stills of the optical printers... I really wanted a J-K Bolex based one when I was in college, but fortunately I got to be Master and Commander of an Acme 103 printer in the mid-80's at a film lab in Colorado Springs. God, what a machine...
I think it is more like 10-20 years more. I was just thinking a weeks ago how sad we went from pixelated npc-s from poligonal npc in video games skipping the voxel npc period. Seems like we humans are not primary artistic species but explorers. Explorers miss a lot of fun going always forward.
Thank you so much for sharing all these clips. Is there any way to purchase the documentary that isn't going to cost me an arm and a leg? I really want to add this to my collection one day.

It's not a "duck monster"! It's one of the Dark Overlords of the Universe.. sucked down from the Nexus of Sominus! Cracking film, great to see some behind the scenes stuff :)
hehe true, it's just funny to think about :) There's some great electrical/energy effects in the film too.. when Dr. Jenning is hurling bubbles of energy in the diner scene you can see refraction offsets of the scene behind them
A lot of people are mentioning that his computer is running Windows XP, but another interesting detail is that on top of the TV in the background are puppets from the old stop-motion Davey and Goliath series.
I think low-end optical printing was covered in Super 8 Filmmaker but it seemed just too complicated and expensive even for Super 8. I'm sure those who tried it had interesting results.
I’m trying to figure out when this was shot, he has a VHS tv on his desk and the computer is running windows xp… curious to be sure. (But he is correct in everything he said )
For me, optical compositing is way cooler and impressive, than digital compositing. Mainly due to the fact that you had to manually create mattes by hand, then line those mattes up perfectly by hand. But digital compositing rids blue screen shots of matte lines. I’m kinda weird though, since I like the look of matte lines in a shot. Kinda looks cool, but that’s just me.
okay piercefilm hovvard the duck motion animaron is biurifore vvorks exelent reaction guys congratulations tanks you very much okay bye bye 👍👍👍👍♥️♥️♥️♥️👌👌👌👌😷😂😁😘😘😘🙏
This movie will forever live in personal infamy as the first sex scene I ever saw, and it was a duck puppet and a live woman 🤣 Was only allowed to watch it because it had George Lucas ("The Star Wars guy!") associated with it.
Except they never actually had sex. Howard The Duck is often misremembered as having a sex scene with Lea Thompson and Howard but it was just playful teasing and a little peck on the lips and nothing else. Lea basically kissed Howard goodnight.
The skill set of these people is so advanced that is difficult to begin to appreciate, even by experienced digital vfx artists. Total respect.
Brings back memories of when I was just a kid. Loved this movie then and now.
This scorpion puppet and the possessed scientist in this film was and still is really frightening.

Dark Overlord was great work, very good.

Yes, but it was just a job for the animators. They can call it what they like. Phil Tippett called it "Alan."

For everyone wondering, this was shot in 2010. VHS and XP!
Thought it was 1985
The interview was done in 2010. The movie was released in 1986.
This is cool.

Yeah, Harry talks about working on that show in another segment here on my channel.
@@piercefilm Thanks. I'm a new subscriber, so I'll go through the archives and check it out.
Still the strangest love-scene in cinema! 🦆🤔

That stop motion monster battle was by far the best scene in Howard The Duck. In fact, it's the only thing that was at all memorable about the movie.
So the score by John Barry, the duck in the bath tub, Beverly almost doing it and all the scenes with Dr Jenning transforming were forgettable?
I wonder if Howard The Duck was not associated with George Lucas, would it be considered a fun sci fi cult classic. Plenty of those made in the 80's.

Apparently it was shot in 2010.
Interview was done in 2010 and the DVD was sold in 2012.

Howard the duck was kinda creepy.
