Just watched a film called Jurassic Punk; you should also watch it if you want to see who was really for the CGI success of this film…among many others…
When Spielberg said that it was during promotion for the movie being out in theaters. Only a jerk would call a thing they literally just got in theaters a classic like the greats before it. Now… decades after. Yes it’s a cinema classic just like King Kong.
Ironically the stop motion man, he said he was now obsolete and extinct when he saw the CGI, so they actually put that line in the movie “we’re out of a job” “Don’t you mean extinct” Thankfully though it wasn’t the end of stop motion, they still needed his animatronics and models to base it off of, which is what a lot of movies still do to this day, they make a model of it then make it onto the screen, so it wasn’t really an end of stop motion just a transformation or evolution of it.
Not anymore. Creatures are based off of real animals meaning that real live animals are used as reference to get weight, movement and timing correct. Take for instance, a trex feet could be animated using an Ostrich/chicken or Cassowaries feet.
Same here man. I used to watch that documentary over and over on an old VHS tape as a kid. Now I wanted to watch it again and I can't believe it's not on youtube, what a shame.
It’s on the dvd adventure pack, as well as the blu rays. I know since I’ve watched it. I love watching g these types of documentaries. I hope that for the making of Jurassic World: Dominion, they bring back James earl Jones as the host for the final movie.
He was wrong when he said that Jurrasic park wasnt a classic like king kong. It most definitely is, that cgi still looks better than some of todays. I just wish it was a stand alone film, all these Jurrasic world movies dont even come close to the greatness of the original.
Thers somthing scary about that stop motion. Thoes are just tests they would make them real size and add the actors in the end . Man it just looks so much better and creepy then normal CGI . No its not good enough to replace it but mabe they should use some as well
@@danielteixeira5139 Nah, it doesn't have the weight of the CGI versions. It looks floaty like much stop motion. Difference is partly that a CGI artist can run the animation again and again tweaking it until it feels as close to perfect as they can get. A stop motion artist basically has one shot to get it right and all the talent in the world is often not quite good enough. Huge respect for them though.
@@danielteixeira5139 I disagree ,I get that it looks s scarier but the movement is really jarring to the eye, looks like something straight from a 1950s claymation commercial, the more smoother cg just makes the raptors look and feel more realistic
Jurassic Punk changed how I see the production of Jurassic Park. Dennis Muren was against almost doing the CGI test almost the entire time but took the credit for the work of Spaz Williams and Mark Dippe anyway.
This shows that Some things just can’t be used practically and that’s when CGI comes in. That doesn’t mean that director has to make every little thing CG like they do now
That stop motion test tho... it's incredible. They say that stop motion hasn't changed at all but this test alone is leagues ahead of anything that came before. I can only imagine how perfect the movie would have been were they to choose stop motion. As this definitely ages better than CGI. It's really believable
@@ImInLoveWithBulla I find it more "realistic " in the sense it feels more tangible. It does feel more like the creature exists, different from CGI whenever it reaches a certain age
Dennis Muren was right, though, it doesn't matter how well Phil Tippett and his team did the stop motion, it would still appear jerky and would not live up to what Stan Winston was creating. New territory had to be explored here in order for the head to toe dinos to be believable. Stop motion simply would not have worked and would not have cut it in Jurassic Park. What ILM gambled on and ultimately gave us was astonishing shots of creatures moving in a way that just isn't possible with stop motion.
@@gilzineto nah,the movement is just too jarring, they don't feel like they have weight, almost looks like a claymation commercial, the cg is just more smoother
I think what he meant by that was to have a childlike enthusiasm, energy and imagination while filming Jurassic Park, taking a different approach than how he would approach a serious drama like Empire Of The Sun for instance, as well as the even more extreme example Schindler’s List.
I want those stop motion Dino's on my shelf, they're like tge ultimate dinosaur toys in every way possible & id also love to see this entire film in stop motion also
Just watched the documentary Jurassic Punk. It was shocking and sad to see how Steve 'Spaz' Williams, the man who seemed to be out of rebellion singlehandedly came up with the CG T-Rex effect on his own time because his supervisor Dennis Muren's told him Phil's (who's also a close friend of Muren) stop-motion team got it so don't even bother spending time creating a digital dinosaur, we won't need it...Turned out, Spielberg went with the CG. The movie won best special effects at the Oscars. The fact that none of the four excited award recipients on stage including Muren, mentioned Williams once on national television. Innocent mistake? Maybe, maybe not? As a designer, can 100% relate to how Steve was used and exploited under corporate bureaucracy while others who can't do or even understand what you do end up taking credit for your work, and you either have to accept it and move on, or do something about it and move on. The documentary apparently sympathizes with Williams and suggests a Salieri/Amadeus-like relationship between Williams & Muren. The truth could be a complicated clash of talents, personalities, and egos between the two most brilliant minds in VFX at the time unfortunately one was far more burned and scarred in the end.
The mindset in hollywood really has changed with CGI from the early 2000's and onwards. Their thinking when making JP's CGI is that "the viewer should not be able to tell that its artificial" so they had to use what was available to them to its limits to ensure that quality. Now its just 'oh its cgi and the viewer knows its artificial so who cares" which results in a movie with really bad CGI.
I Like The Stop Motion Graphic Dinosaurs And Photo Effects Dinosaurs And Rubber Suit Dinosaurs And Hand Drawn Animated Dinosaurs And Animatronic Dinosaurs And Computer Generated Dinosaurs
Can somebody ask me who created and made the realistic stop-motion dinosaurs poseable model figures for the test scenes for: "Jurassic Park."? I'd really like to know about it, please!
As someone who worked in the film industry with 3d, compositing, etc., the stop motion test footage really doesn't look more or less "realistic" compared to the CG used in the film. The CG in Jurassic Park, and most films before and after it, is noticeably fake. That being said, we'll never know what the end product would truly have looked like with stop motion.
Of course no mention of Steve spaz Williams, the guy that literally came up cgi dinosaurs on his own. Without him Jurassic park would never have been possible and muren and his buddies took all the awards for the genius of another man’s work. What a load of crap that is.
Movies back then were absolutely magical, in storytelling and scope. The beautiful scores were final icing on the cake 🎂. There's no magic or inspiration anymore 😢, seems to be all be political and personal agendas and corporate profit. I've noticed that most movies scores sounds very generic with "NO" heart or emotions. I really want to bringing the back those types of movies that I grew up with ever since I was toddler and younger ages in 2000s era with more "Absolutely Magical", "Storytelling" and "Scope". Even more "Heart and Emotion".
This film stand up itself for the Stan Winston animatronic, the CGI during the sunny sequence is heavly fake, if you consider the team, few guys, that works on stop motion sequence you and Universal had all opportunities to make great sequence also better than CGI, It's evident in the Phil Tippet test of T-Rex
