**Dex mode can be used on a bunch of Samsung devices, not just the Fold 4 🤓** - What's your favorite way to use the Z Fold 4?
Yep, but the video is also about how the Fold allows you to be more productive on the go in place of a laptop using the Fold's tablet UI for multitasking thanks to the large screen that you don't get on those other devices.
People don't realize that in terms of compute performance mobile chipsets have been in the Terraflop range (Tflop) for years now.. It's definitely a computer. So besides productivity tasks I often use my phone with Dex mode as a gaming console for playing on a monitor (it's no PS5 but it's definitely powerful) and I've been using it to teach myself Java programming.. Dex is very functional and let's not forget that you can easily use a device like that as a thin client for logging into secure remote servers too. It's a very convenient and pocketable solution. The problem though is app optimization for Dex (and tablets in general on Android). Google claims that it will be optimizing all of it's Google apps for large screens and in the case of Google docs, things like text selection and highlighting will mirror it's desktop counterpart (Hopefully these apps will be as functional as it's desktop counterparts too)..
Sidenote: You can get rid of the 5 app limitation by installing an app called GoodLock. GoodLock adds additional functionality through modules. One of them called Multistar allows you to remove the app limit so you can run as many apps as you like 👍.
I would buy it even if it was $2000, but they need to bring back the headphone jack and the SD card slot. I can't believe they alienated so many of thier fan base by removing those two main key features.
@@mattgrease8308 most of the people buying a Fold are likely using Galaxy Buds, frankly. There's a reason the pre-order deals include them.
The SD slot is definitely a pain point, as I used it for various reasons beyond just more storage, but I've made peace with it and have taken to using other storage methods to the same end (e.g., external drives). Besides, it's not like the SD card was ever easily accessible on Samsung phones like it is on Sony devices, for example, which have a tool-less SD slot.
Having 512GB - 1TB on board helps, too.
Samsung passed Apple years ago for creativity and customization.
To address a few of your comments/issues: 1) you can use more than 5 apps at a time if you're using an official Samsung dock (DeX Station, DeX Pad) or the Skull and Co. Jumpgate dock. Alternatively, you can use the Samsung Good Lock MultiStar module to remove this limitation with other docks and adapters. You can otherwise use 20 apps at a time.
2) Regarding interfaces for Zoom and Slack, the web interface is often more reminiscent of their Windows/Mac counterparts. I've found the best browser experience is found with Edge, making sure to set to always load desktop sites and to remain in Edge when clicking links rather than launching external apps. You get an experience that's very similar to a traditional desktop PC as a result.
3) The full-screen chat window you observed in Zoom is a product of lazy app developers. Full-screen keyboard has been a legacy issue in Android for years. Developers can fix that, if they want, so that the keyboard typing window does not occupy the full screen.
4) Be sure to dive into the system settings' Advanced Features section to enable multi-window for all apps. This will ensure you can multi-task and run pop-up windows for *all* apps. This is in addition to getting Samsung Good Lock and the MultiStar module for even more capability (such as removing the aforementioned app limit). It's unfortunate that Samsung does not have these features enabled by default, because they really do make a dramatic UX difference.

Was impressed, he actually replaced his pc and used the fold 4 practically as a replacement.
For Dex mode, you can overcome the limit of 5 apps by installing GoodLock Multistar module. Samsung always have a backup for most of the settings.

That's the thing I love about androids is that there's a lot free play for users. 90% of the time if you need something done, there's an app for it
I got one and you forgot to mention the wireless Dex mode to your TV. I love that feature specially when you are tired and want to work from your bed or sofa from a bigger screen.
Have you tried playing Netflix using Dex connected to PC? Cuz it doesnt work on my Note 9.

This setup of a device that can be used as a phone, a tablet and a laptop computer is fantastic and a technological marvel. Reminds me of the times when cell phone manufacturers were putting the concepts of a palm pilot and a phone together. Great setup as a jack of all trades but a master of none.

Just got it for about $600 512gb version due to deals and note 20u trade in. Think it’s great for anyone with a phone 2 years or older though would suggest others with newer devices to wait for fold 5 which likely will be a more iterative upgrade

I'm a big user of Dex, and have been for many years.
Dex reminds me of how greedy Apple is. They could easily provide a Desktop experience with their iPhone's, but if they did that, people wouldn't buy as many MacBooks..
So you have hundreds of millions of people walking around with chips in their phones that offer greater performance than 75% of desktops, but who will never _ever_ user the chip to even 50% of its potential!!
At least with Samsung and 1plus you can levy the power of your phone.

Refurbished ZF3 owner and I'll say I love this device there's no way I could go back to an ordinary phone after this phone. It's a productivity magnet. And also an amazing tablet experience all together.

@@defnotatroll No actually, i thought it might but honestly it kind of makes me feel more secure of it durability wise. And I'm used to the inner and outer screen that it's kind of a natural thing like a normal phone for me. Both come in handy for different scenarios/situations. I have dropped this phone many many times probably too often. Just as much as any other device. This one *knock on 🪵* is still a champ. I also found a neat case for it that has held up well. Inner screen is perfect for ride share when using or navigation, streaming, etc. Outer screen for texting or phone calls, music, etc. I switched from a Note 20 Ultra and still love that phone to pieces but this one has held up to the standard. Made me realize it is lacking in some areas but it also doesn't need those features either. As a normal phone this thing rocks!

@· I have the z fold 4 and the size is perfect. It's small when you want it to be and big when you want it to be. When folded, it's much more narrow than my old S20 ultra making it more comfortable for 1 handed use. When I want a bigger screen, I unfold it. I realized that even tho the z fold 4 is thicker, it feels much smaller than the S20 because of the smaller footprint when it's in my pocket
I couldn't agree more. I don't know how i have ever gone without having this phone. I was an iPhone user through-and-through but a couple of years ago I climbed over the wall and set myself free and so i decided i was going to try the Z fold 2, oh I have not looked back since. I purchased the Z Fold 3 , and now I currently have the Z Fold 4. I absolutely love this device. And no, by no means do you have to buy a new one every year. I do it only because I like to have the latest and greatest, but by no means do you have to.

@SimonLYW I don't find your meaning, but since you asked the kind that likes a bigger display and all that comes with having said display, that would be my reasoning. Why? Nothing wrong with the S22Ultra and if you do nothing but take pictures then the S22Ultra is the phone for the job but if its real multi-tasking and working from your phone then obviously a bigger display is the way to go.

You can use Samsung's own good lock app to unlock dex to allow unlimited apps open at once
You can open more than 5 apps if you install Goodlock and then the multistar plug in. You can then go into the we dex and it has an option to allow more than 5 apps.
I can open 6 windows at once on my tab s8 without multi star
If you want to use more than 5 apps at once, install good luck. There are many more settings you can unlock using good lock
Samsung Dex in One UI 5.0 is very good and Samsung has stepped up its capabilities, I like it. The Samsung Dex feature is what makes me love Samsung. This feature doesn't even exist in Apple, I don't think. Samsung holds the best ecosystem.
I have an iPad Pro and even their stage manager on a device with a desktop class processor is far more limited in ease of windowing than Samsung Dex. Plus the iPad Mini and regular iPad do not get it.
Samsung dex is what made me get the samsung tab s8 instead of ipad pro. However apple has a far better ecosystem

Great review. I'm a first gen fold owner and it's still going strong. People that reviewed that phone exaggerated its weaknesses. Looking forward to the 5th generation of this form factor.
This is an interesting take. The Z Fold4 is a very versatile and capable device. I can see it being able to fulfill most tasks that a laptop can do. Samsung DeX is one of the most underrated features on Galaxy smartphones. I like that it turns your phone into desktop like experience. I don’t think many people talk about this, but using a cloud PC service like Shadow or Windows 365 can make this a laptop replacement when traveling. I will note that the subscription can be quite pricey and you need a good internet connection to have the best experience.
Unless you specifically and absolutely need Windows software, you can accomplish most anything else natively on Android at this point. LumaFusion just came to Android so now there's a full-featured video editor on the platform as well, which was one of the biggest gaps previously.
@@nickthaskater Pretty much. Now that you mentioned LumaFusion, I have been using it on my Z Fold4 and it has been incredible. This is one of those apps that shows how capable the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 really is.
I use DEX mode on my Tab S7 all the time and it has replaced my personal laptop. People that say android tablets are junk haven't tried Samsung DEX and they don't know what they're talking about. And the functionality is WAY better than an iPad.

Great review, and thanks for not going into a bunch of bench mark testing that most users don't even care about. This showed why I've gravitated to Samsungs ecosystem and decided to trade in my Galaxy 22 Ultra for this Fold 4. It handles my productivity task very well, and yes there are some areas for improvements but I'm confident that Samsung will work on making it better over the coming years. Nothing against Apple users but I find Samsung just give greater flexibility of use within all of their tech.
This is really cool. I'm impressed at how well this functions. It's not perfect, for sure. But it will get better. With these sorts of things I am most interested in the future potential of this technology. Phones will eventually get to a point where they will function as well as computers today. Whether that means they will ever catch up to the advances that the computers of the future will make... that's doubtful. However, I definitely think we will get to a stage where a good portion of the population will work from their phones in such a way as this video shows.
Some of the shortcomings shown in the video can be easily, albeit not intutively, addressed. The 5 app limit, for example, can be removed and you can run up to 20 apps at the same time. It's unfortunate that Samsung tucks away these capabilities behind advanced settings and their Good Lock application rather than putting the full capability front and centre.

If I upgrade my Note 20 ultra to an iphone 14 pro with 512 and an ipad mini 256 with cellular data and the apple pencil, that's $2229. Apple will give me $250 for my Note 20 ultra for a total price of $1979. My Z fold 4 is 512 and cost $2000. After my educational discount and Samsung's discount it came to $1500 but... Samsung gave me $1000 for my Note 20 Ultra. Total price of $500. I absolutely love my Fold 4 as a phone and I super love it as a mini tablet. Best device I've ever owned!

I don't own a fold, but galaxy note 20 ultra, and I don't use laptop that much anymore. Looking forward to have these kind of phones that would do most of the tasks.
How's the battery holding up what's your average screen on time?

I honestly love the iPad, but DeX runs circles around Stage Manager. If you are planning to replace your laptop since you are not a heavy user, this or the Tab S8 variants make sense. If you are a regular consumer who wants to use tablets as tablets, then the iPad is still the way to go.

As someone who recently purchased a Tab S8 plus over and m1 ipad, i can confidently say the only reason to buy an ipad is if you ABSOLUTELY need Procreate or Affinity, even if you have an iphone. For 99% of people who would need a tablet for emailing, word docs, spreadsheets, browsing and video conference the Tab is far superior, it has better multitasking and file management and better front cameras. As a professional graphic artist there is nothing you can't do with Krita or ClipStudio, and android also has LumaFusion, AutoCAD, Concepts and Canva and they work excently because they're paid subscription apps

Yep! You can also do the snipping shortcut of Windows+Shift+S to do a selective screen grab rather than a full screen shot, among many other keyboard shortcuts.

I use my galaxy phone for software development. It can run any full Linux apps, gimp, vscode, postgesql server, anything.
I'm 1 months in, and it's has been my favorite phone since I got it. I have the s22 and the fold 4. The s22 is for calls and pictures and the fold 4 is what I use for everything else. Gaming, watching UA-cam, movies, scrolling Facebook, Twitter and tiktok. I've never needed to try the inside camera because I'm always using the main camera. If I didn't need 2 phone this would be my only phone.

If you need to use desktop apps sometimes, you can have a home desktop PC running Windows and access it remotely. I tried this and it worked well. The PC is like a server and your phone is the main device to interact with it.
Love mine, one thing I found is that the image quality on the external display is kind of crappy (kind of pixelated?) for some reason, using QHD mode on the Full HD display I have can improve a bit though.

Good video! To be honest, if I were invested into the Apple ecosystem, I would be inclined to go all out on the Samsung Galaxy Fold 4 or wait for the next iteration, 5. Why? Simply because I can do away with a Macbook, iPhone and iPad. I have it all in one! Sure, the Samsung Galaxy Fold 4 isn't perfect, but it keeps getting better all the time. Hence why I would hold out for the Galaxy Fold 5. With the next generation of Snapdragon Gen 8 2, I'd be expecting more! A better camera system, and more capabilities. Now that Lumafusion is out on Android, I can't see myself wanting a whole lot more from Android. The combination of Android (Samsung) and Windows PC are unbeatable!
Truly the biggest problem of Apple is that once you stepped in, you can't step out. Many people are just not wary of that when they invest in Apple's ecosystem. With android I used at least 4 brands of phones and I cannot be more happy that I am able to choose.

I am Galaxy S22 and Fold3 user, and I can tell that although both phones have DEX, there is a pretty significant difference! There are tasks that I used to perform on my PC that I can do in tablet mode (without fancy mouse and keyboard).
I will only complain about the limitations with the number of app windows and the fact that Excel has so few features. But the latter can be overcome by using Excel online😅.
I’ve been an iPhone user for 10 plus years, but seeing reviews of the Z Fold 4 made me make the switch!

Well if you dont need to use heavy applications such as virtual machines or video editing software then dex is fine
Funny you mention video editing considering LumaFusion just released on Android and it works exceptionally well with DeX and the Fold 4. The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 is hilariously powerful.

Good review! But it's mystifying that you don't mention how the UI is similar to Windows. It's closer to Windows than Mac, e.g., in the way windows snap. Are you not familiar with Windows 11? You should try it. It's great!

This good functions that you dont have in Windows, we are familiar on Linux Ubuntu. I bought the Fold 4 to use as my main workstation. I am a brazillian Software Architect and Developer and it seems like a Ubuntu experience. Thanks for the point of view.

Of course it's worth..the Z Fold4 is basically 3 devices in one..smartphone, PC and a tablet/laptop that fits in your pocket...it's a bargain when you look at it like that which is the only way to look at it...Especially when you can get one for $1400, that's $465 for each devices..
I recently got $800 trade in from Best Buy towards the fold 4 and only paid $1000 out of pocket.

This phones replaces my personal computer on a daily basis using either Dex or Tablet mode. Was it worth the price ? Definitely! I feel i have 3 devices in one package: desktop, laptop/tablet and regular smartphone. I also used it at times, for work related tasks (such as emails, teams chat and video calls and small word editing. It has what i need to perform around 90% of my work related tasks (i am an IT project manager). I even run a linux distribution on it at times... It is for sure, one of the best device i have owned in a long time.

Phones can do so much more than people realise. Unless one does power demanding tasks, you don't need a £1000 laptop.

As a Mac user and photographer that will never change but im a Samsung user since the Note series showed up and realized Samsung offers more than a phone and cute surfaces and wow marketing Samsung offers you a computer , a phone , a camera and all the tools to really be mobile and you don't have to stand in line outside a store like its food handout Tuesday to get one. currently on a Samsung 21 Ultra with 104mp try that apple. it challenges my $6k Canon camera and so much more . In a few weeks Z4 upgrade for sure

I felt very stuck in the Apple ecosystem myself and hated how it prevented me from trying other tech I thought was cool. I've since switched to android and only use a Mac for my work computer. Overall I don't miss the Apple ecosystem all that much. Losing imessage was probably the biggest pain point, but not having Apple hold that over my head anymore is worth more to me than the features it offered.
I have a s22 ultra and love the idea that if I want a fold I cna trade my current phone in with Samsung and experience that. Switching phones no longer has a negative besides spending money, and that's awesome.

Apple is petrified to switch on RNC for the exact reason they know that would make iMessage communicate with all Windows and Android comms apps. This is how they exploit their customers who are defacto stuck in their ecosystem.

It's capable of running Ubuntu as a virtual machine using termux and vmware player for mobile. Also Acode is a good ide for mobile. I've been able to run nodejs and build a nextjs, tailwindcss and react app with this device. I was able to publish the app without needing a desktop easily
I just use Replit on the web on my Fold 4. They also just released a native Android app.

Bought a used fold 4 in class 1 condition for £700. Half the price and all the functionality. Its a PC in your pocket. Just get a protective hard shell case. I also have small usbc cable and small battery pack just in case. This phone is a mini computer.

I'm invested in the Apple ecosystem (iPhone 14 Pro Max, Apple Watch Ultra, MacBook Pro, Apple TV, etc) but god I really want the Z Fold 4. It's so different from anything I've ever used. The only thing stopping me, other than the Apple ecosystem, is concerns about long-term durability of the folding display.

It's just too expensive right now for what it does. Prices gotta go down or that things gotta do a lot more preferably have a bigger battery as well

@@papabeartx the screens are kind of the whole point. An S22 Ultra is not a tablet. The Fold can be, while also being a phone. I went from a Note 10+ to the Fold 4 - night and day in terms of productivity with the large inner screen.
@Nick B I also had the note 10 which I upgraded to the s22 ultra. I had every intention on getting the fold 4 but after playing with it I couldn't justify paying so much more and getting less of a phone compared to my note 10, in my opinion of course lol. I feel like the fold is not there yet, but very close. Honestly the 22 is barely an upgrade compared to the 10. I should have just waited for the 23 ultra or the fold 5.
I've had mine since release and I can honestly say the battery life could be better.
It's running a large 120Hz display on a tiny phone battery. I regularly get 6+ hours of screen time hammering it with multitasking and streaming media among other things like photos, videos, and gaming. That's pretty good for a device like this with this level of power in my opinion.

I'm also an avid user of apple ecosystem but I'm also a type 1 diabetic. I built the loop dev on my favorite iphone but then I tried and made androidaps (AAPS= Android Artificial Pancreas System) on an android phone and boom that was it , i changed my phone and got the fold 4. it's really innovative but unfortunately as a mac user apple watch airopds etc user i miss my iphone.

Basically users want phone to work in dex mode. So best software is with iphone or android. Hence, iphone/Android with dex mode is what users want. Resolution and aspect ratio has to be like real computer. S23 ultra has limited resolution in dex mode. Resolution in z fold 4 also looks equally bad.
