Tablets have come a really long way from the early days of the iPad and today’s powerful chips, compact batteries, and incredible screen technology, the line between laptop and tablet has really blurred. There are laptops with removable keyboards, tablets with attached keyboards, and even laptops with two screens where one acts like a digital keyboard. So this got me wondering. Are they actually interchangeable? Can I actually replace my laptop with a tablet? So I set out on a mission to answer this question and for the past 7 days used a tablet instead of my laptop. I still had to do all my usual tasks like managing emails, online shopping, budgeting, everything I would normally have done on my laptop, but I was forced to do it on my tablet.

    ADDITIONAL REVIEW NOTES:
    Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 Ultra
    14.6” OLED display
Flagship Snapdragon Gen 2 for Samsung
Extremely slim with great screen to body ratio
    1.6lb
    In screen fingerprint sensor
    Ultra low latency S-Pen
    New keyboard cover design
    Stacked specs
It’s the best android tablet on the market
This has Samsung Dex which feels like a cheat code.
So in the beginning, things were off to a rough start. It took time
Chrome and Brave are ok, Samsung Internet is ideal. Just make sure you switch to desktop mode
I found alternate apps to make things work and are optimized for tablets.
Hotkeys work! (takes a beat to learn the differences, but most are 1:1 with Windows
You can use Dex on the tablet or on a monitor
    Wireless Dex
You can use dex on a monitor while using the tablet as a tablet, but not both
But you can flow pointer to tablet screen
Ports. USB-C plus You can technically insert an SD card (from a camera, etc) but you need a tool to do so
Still good for expanding storage though
But no HDMI, headphone, or USB-A
The Hub from Anker. (Anker 551)
Then things started to pick up and it felt more like a laptop but even better in some ways.
    *Cameras on rear for scanning
Has a flash on the rear cameras
*Accurate pen with low latency for natural writing
No laptop pen even comes close
    Probably better webcam quality
Two lenses to choose from - standard and ultrawide angle - 4K
    Auto framing
    Quicker startup
    Biometric sign in
Biometrics to unlock lots of things
Smooth and intuitive touch gestures just like a phone
So I was really digging this
But once I really got in the zone, I was able to be productive in apps like
Until I ran into a few issues
    My wired printer didn’t work
Strangely only the Tab S9+ offers cellular 5G
Dex is great but many apps are not optimized - Samsung forces though and it sort of works
Tons of apps are not optimized for tablets at all
    Can use mobile apps (great!)
You can also get lots of Android widgets on your homescreen
Cannot use work horse apps like Adobe Permiere Pro, Creo, etc.
ALSO BETTER FOR WORKING ON THE GO
    Has GPS
    Sort of has 5G
    Pretty solid battery life
Lighter and thinner than most laptops
    This has IP68 Water Resistance!!!
    Durable Gorilla Glass Victus+ display
If you are traveling, you could always run remote desktop via the tablet and use a big machine back home
Keyboard case is nice but has no trackpad. Also feels more sturdy on my lap
Daily Board = a better version of screen saver (when charging)
Two different UIs - one dedicated to tablet use, which is easier
    COMPARE TO Yoga 9i
Dex feels like a linux OS but with more limitations
    A watered down Windows 11
    Limited to one external display
If you mostly just browse the web, review PDFs, take handwritten notes, and work with common programs like google docs, excel, powerpoint, or email, this is ideal
If you need any heavy lifting or high output productivity
The device seems capable but the software is not
    SUVs analogy

The first computer I used was a research machines 380Z, followed by a BBC model B, 1980-1985 ish. I have been using/teaching computing since then, now happily retired. I treated myself to a samsung s9 ultra as my Christmas present to self in December. These youtube video clips are a fantastic means of learning new concepts and skills. Thank you for the time and skill you have put into creating this video. I am confident I will still be learning about s9 ultra, software and hardware accessories next Christmas. I am only 68 and have lots to learn. Maybe in 32 years, I'll know it all? 😊 Anyone else remember punch cards and mark sense cards? Then along came keyboards, mice and GUI. Now it is speech recognition, the s pen and AI. Who knows what will come next? Enjoying reading other comments.

This topic always breaks down into "use case". I love samsung Dex and have been using it for years and wish more people understood it's power and flexability. Do I think it could replace laptops? Again that is bases on the use case. If you set something up for grandma who has her samsung, then it saves her having to buy a laptop and wasting the money. If you are in university with limited space in a dowm room or limited funds, then samsung dex would be an option as most univerities allow you to remote into their servers for your work and citrix as an example works very well in Dex. If you are using it to try and program with or work with applications that need high resources, then no, and even then those kinds of projects should be using a desktop more than a laptop. Would I use Dex over my desktop, no, but I spent all of January and February of 2021 trying, and yes for ME i would use dex to replace my laptops, in fact I have done so. Including the fact i'm typing this all out in DEX right now.

A few years back, Android tablets were somewhat gimmicky. Not that much performance, not an optimised tablet UI. But now the main problem with Android tablets is finding proper optimized apps. It might take some time but I'm happy that Google started to incorporate tablet features in native android, will definitely help devs to make proper desktop grade tablet apps

However, I bought it because I'm a writer, and sometimes I want it to be a little harder to get distracted. On the Tab S9 Ultra, it's a bit of a hassle to leave my Word doc, which is a good thing. I only ask because side I had an international model of a canon eos r, and canon wouldn’t honor warranties, insurance or anything. I had to pay out of pocket because it wasn’t intended for US market. I guess their excuse was if something wasn’t working right it’s because it was for an international market.

I still have a laptop that I schlep from home to office (I prefer to BYOD) and back, but when I'm in court, I almost exclusively use my tablet. I had an ipad and was completely disappointed in its capabilities, so gave it away. I don't use DeX, but instead use a special Android launcher called Win-X launcher that has allowed me to customize my home screen to look like Windows 10 (I run Nova Launcher on my Samsung phone). That little Anker hub you showed is way cool and I'll have to look into getting one. Thanks for the video!

While it’s true that every person has his/her own necessity of specific devices for working, it’s also true that this need of heavy working apps on desktop OSs is very limited to those specific professionals. Not considering PC gamers, as time goes on, there are less and less people who need a whole Windows pc or Mac, because they can do just fine with a cheap android tablet, or an iPad. I think it’s only a matter of time that tablets and mobile systems will overcome their actual limits and will become the main way of computing for casuals and also professionals.

Thanks for mentioning the new Yoga 9i. So far I've seen countless videos comparing tablets to regular laptops, but I feel like the newer 2-in-1 laptops are the ones to beat when it comes to use cases, since they already have tablet mode and pen support, but you also get to keep your favorite windows applications.
The new yoga 9i, the surface pro and the new dell xps 2-in-1 seem like great alternatives to a tablet based workspace because they don't keep the keyboard attached on the back when using tablet mode anymore, which in my opinion is what sucked the most in 2-in-1 devices.

I've used Windows convertibles for years. My biggest frustration with where things are currently is that there are not any smaller tablet sized options (sub 11 inch screen) available. Along with that, there doesn't seem to be any effort to make Windows tablets more capable at doing tasks appropriate to a smaller tablet (apps sizing for smaller tablets, better cameras, better speakers, better mobile apps, better battery life, etc.).
I've been using a Galaxy Tab s7 for well over a year now, and I'm thinking about replacing it with an old Dell Latitude 11. It's frustrating that I have to go back to a seven year old device to find something that is compact with good speakers and decent battery life that runs Windows, but it looks like that is my only option.

I have turned to using a Windows VM for the 10% of heavy lifting, where an application is only available or workable in a true windows environment, this is very cost effective and simple to access as I'm using my phone I always have aninternet connection.

It really just depends on what you need to get done. For web browsing, google docs, light video editing with Lumafusion, working on images with lightroom (I prefer lightroom mobile to the desktop version of lightroom actually) and quite a few other things a tablet is a great device. But here is the rub, a samsung phone also has dex. Which means you don't even need a tablet to get all of these capabilities. And combined with a mouse and folding keyboard you can get a crazy amount of stuff done with like the xREAL glasses. It's basically this but way more mobile.

I have a Galaxy Tab S8+ with the slim keyboard case and have fully replaced my laptop with it. I used to have both a laptop and a Galaxy Tab S6 but I barely used the laptop and I wanted to reduce down to just one mobile computing solution and this is the perfect one for me. I remote into a desktop PC when I need Windows features, but otherwise can fully get away with the tablet. Browsing the web, studying, checking emails, video calls, media consumption, finance management, etc, are all really solid. I do bring a mouse with me everywhere, but I would do that with a laptop anyway, so that's not an issue. I also only need it when I got into Dex mode or remote into my Windows machine.
I know it's not for everyone, but it can work very well if you know what you're trying to accomplish, and more importantly, what your limitations will be.

I'm traveling in Croatia now, and this is the first time I have left my laptop at home. I use the Tab S9 and a foldable keyboard and mouse. No real issues in replacing my laptop, but I am no longer a power user. I use email, WhatsApp, messages, and light use of Excel and Word, as well as all of the usual tablet uses. I also use Dex, and as you indicated, use the desktop option for the Samsung web browser and other apps. Another advantage is the integration between the Tab S9 and my Z Flip 5, where you can use can send email and messages from your phone using the tablet keyboard. In the evening, we stream movies to the TV in the room, either wirelessly or wired. In Dex mode, it adapts to the aspect ratio of the TV, rather than just mirroring. The bottom line is it really depends on your uses. I thought I could use my iPad Mini 6 as a laptop replacement but found it frustratingly limiting and inflexible.

It wasn't until I saw a can't-pass-it-up deal on a new M1 Mac that returned me to using to a desktop computer after a year and a half. I like running Asahi Linux on that M1, BTW. So much so...that I found parts to repair my old 2011 Mac and make it into a more-than-passable Linux box, too. Most of my tasks today are served by my tablets, though.

I saw this video when it came out but 2 months later, I just actually ordered a Tab S9 Ultra for $550 after trade-ins and saw a great discounted price on Macbook Air M1 (~$790) right after that. So I'm on the fence about this. I'm looking for a PhD programme and possibly for a job at a lab. I love drawing and writing too, so I know that flagship tablet is way more than enough for those, thanks to the web apps of today. But for me, using a citation manager software is also a must. So bringing a tablet to the office at the uni without having a desktop class OS is... kind of childish, maybe? I know Tab S9 Ultra will bring me the most of the way there, but if I'm sticking with academia, I feel like a real laptop like a Macbook is the sensible choice. But I'd love to use Tab S9 Ultra because it's capable, it's open to the creative use cases and it's so fun to use. Also funnily enough, it has double the storage compared to the M1 Air, lol. I'm still on the fence. I watched a lot of videos on the subject and I can't decide easily.

For me I think the problem is the laziness of developers. There's something I call selective optimization. Usually developers give excuse like Android devices are too many and so they just create whatever and then only optimize for apple devices. That's what I call selective optimization, whereby you pick a particular one to optimize for.
So if any of the developers are to come to android you could pick 1 or 2 to be optimized for. For example take Photoshop, there's Photoshop on the ipad. This is not because the ipad is an Almighty power ipad but it's just their laziness to come to android. Take a look a apps like clip studio paint for galaxy. Its so optimized that it's even way better than procreate on ipad. Then so there's no excuse for not being optimized. For example affinity designer can decide to come to android and pick Samsung and Google. Probably just an example. At least if they pick just one out of the Android brands out there to be optimized for, we Android users will have nothing to complain about since we understand why its not for all android brands.
Considering the fact that Samsung is already on par with apple if not better in my opinion, these developers should take advantage of it. But their laziness won't let them. I hope everyone understands tho❤❤

Can tablets replace laptops is one question, but at the same time one has to ask these days, can smartphones replace tablets as well?
Dex is not limited to Samsung tabs, but can be used with their smartphones and external keyboards and displays as well. Another new trend might be the combination of smartphones and AR glasses, which further can improve productivity of smartphones and replace tablets even more. Why go for a 14 inch tab S9 Ultra, if you can go for way bigger displays with an Xreal air?
If you then also look at the trend of folding smartphones that turn into tablets, it's more likely that smartphones replace tablets soon imo, at least Android based once.

Yep this is why I don't have a laptop or tablet I just use my pixel fold and have a subscription to shadow so I have a cloud gaming PC to run .exe programs and PC games and have a folding keyboard/mouse and folding stand and when I done fold everything up and throw it in a sling bag . Also tried a Samsung fold 4 with the nreal ar glasses .

I am two weeks in on the S9 Ultra. Use it for Word, PowerPoint , Gmail, etc so I find it to be perfect because I get mostly what I need w out the drama of opening up my speedy Lenovo, the long boot, the updates, the restarts….that crap exhausts me. Re PowerPoint. I do think the MS versions n the Lenovo is that much more powerful, but for editing, adding images , shuffling slides and tidying up, the pad is perfect

Thank you for the video. I think there is a huge misunderstanding regarding DeX and not being able to run Apps in an optimized way. It is exactly the opposite because per definition, every single App can run optimized under DeX. I’ll explain this. One of the main problems before DeX was that Apps looked just stretched and ridiculous when running on big screens under Android or iOS. The best examples were Apps like Instagram or Twitter. DeX idea was to address this big problem. Instead of stretching Apps, you could suddenly run each App in a Window in its “native” and optimized size. Problem solved. Look, Apple refuses up to today to allow the Calculator App to run under iOS. The only reason is because it just looks ridiculous, and Apple has no solution to it. And the 3rd party calculator apps look ridiculous, too. But my daughters Tab S4 can run it natively on the tablet screen in a window with an appropriate size.

    • @GhastlyHunger
      @GhastlyHunger 8 місяців тому

Running apps in a native resolution is not the same as having an optimised tablet view.

    • @arvandvarahram
      @arvandvarahram 8 місяців тому

@@GhastlyHungerThis is correct, but this is not necessary. If an App was not designed for tablets, like Instagram, the best option to run it is running it in its native size which is simply the most optimized way. And only DeX allows this because it can run the Apps in a Window without forcing them to be stretched. Therefore, per definition, each single App can run in the size the developer has designed it for and this is always the most optimised way.

Android has 2.8 million apps (900,000 more than iPadOS).
Count the number of apps with optimization problems then divide by 2.8 million.
There is a reason why UA-camrs don't do this simple math.

Hey there. Love your reviews - I came in on your Watch videos, and appreciate the depth you go to. But, I have to ask: how relevant is this video in the context of iPadOS 17 and Stage Maanager. A lot of the things you were saying are limits on the Samsung are basically no problem on the iPad. Connect a USB-Hub and you have all the ports you need. I'm not saying the iPad is better - but I found it odd to hear that Apps in Windows/External Monitor was the one feature that the iPad was lacking.

Not quite as fanby, been using a Tab S7 for a few years for my remote work. Dex is great for the days I'm in another office to connect with another monitor. Best feature is the connectivity for presenting and ability to move around and highlight portions of presentation without having to sit and use a mouse.
Plus it's big enough to watch movies and read while flying without taking up a lot of room.

Having to depend on getting WiFi in other countries has been problematic. If they get mobile connectivity, I'm in.

Great review, very thoughtful. I have a slightly different set of requirements. I want to be able to boot android or linux, or even better, run them side by side. I have a large body of programs that I use on Linux Mint, but there are some things I prefer to run on android because I already run them on my RaZR+, and they're not available on Linux. Emulators just don't cut it, for performance and compatibility reasons. For a while there Linux on Dex was the answer to all my requirements, but then Samsung ended that program. Too bad.

My Windows laptop has been in depot repair so I've tried a similar forced experiment trying to get work done with my Galaxy Tab S6. It's a hell of a good tablet, but has so many minor inconveniences that I wound up getting a cheap open box Windows tablet to work on until my laptop comes back.
A few examples of minor problems which add up:
-Couldn't upload a file to a website in order to process it - the file management wasn't up to the task
-Two finger trackpad scroll doesn't work on GDocs (but mouse wheel does)
-Zoom mobile doesn't allow mic selection
-Can't switch profiles in browsers like you can on desktop
-Exoporting a video in LumaFusion led to out of sync audio that I couldn't fix for the life of me. Borrowed a laptop and had no problem on export
    -Couldn't attach an external webcam
None of these are deal breakers on their own, but these and other annoyances all add up to one.
Little of this is Samsung's fault - they're mostly limitations of specific apps or Android.
Samsung's tablets are great - amazing build quality, top notch multitasking, and nice screen, sound, and peripherals. But it wasn't quite good enough for me to get my work done well.

I tried using my iPad as a laptop while travelling. The portability side of things worked well. However I needed an adapter and dongle to have access to an SD card reader, usb ports and HDMI port. The main limitations centred around file handling. With three cameras in tow transferring files and editing photos and videos was more difficult than using a dedicated laptop. I had previously used a 15” laptop, tried using 10.2” iPad with keyboard case then settled on a Microsoft Surface Pro.

Great video!👍 A month ago I bought the Galaxy Tab S9+. Since then I don't use my laptop so much. Yeah, some apps like Instagram, Twitter (X) don't work well on huge screens. Instead I use web versions of them. The S Pen has changed my handwriting habits, so I don't use paper notebooks anymore. I really like when all my notes sync with my Galaxy S23+. I can read my study notes on my phone everywhere. Also, I use my laptop because I can't code and use Windows-only apps on my tablet.🥲 But Galaxy Tab S9 series are great tablets!😀

Windows Subsystem for Android on Windows 11 or Waydroid on Linux allows you to run Android apps directly on your Windows/Linux laptop (if it has a touchscreen) and get that "tablet" feel while still having a real computer.

All this comparison is valid if you are going to use it as a everyday device i.e. browsing, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, PDF reader, Video calls etc tasks ! The moment you think about anything more like Programming/App development/Photo/Video Editing etc, even a moderate laptop blows Tablets (Android, iPad or even Windows tablets) out of water !!
I have recently tried comparing a top of the line Windows 2 in 1 Dell tablet with a Dell laptop (theoretically same specs like RAM and CPU) and got really frustrated with the tablet while using for Visual Studio, SSMS, OBS Studio and similar apps plus Edge browser with 20 or so tabs open at a time, so finally had to swap it with a laptop (similar specs and also of same Dell brand). My guess is tablets are not really designed to be used with dual 4K monitors through Thunderbotl Docks and for a lot of parallel processing but more for portability and touch-screen operations in mind !
If you compare Android tablets then the pain for high-end computing is even more than that for Windows tablets !!! Even the top of the line iPad is not good for high-end computing purpose, you'll want to switch to MacBook Pro in that case.
