  • The Jacksonville State University Marching Southerners were selected as exhibition band for Bands of America Grand Nationals competition, November, 1999, Indianapolis, IN. The show, "Dances & Celebrations for a New Age" was created in anticipation of the new century/millennium, and featured some of the best classical music of the 19th and 20th centuries. From the opener, "Russian Christmas Music" to the closer, "Finale" (Shostakovitch & Tchaikovsky), this show is one of the best from the "Bodiford Era", which continues to the present at JSU.

This is the year I marched Southerners. One of the best years of my life. Thank you to Mr. Bodiford. Also to Casey and Ryan.. 2 very good section leaders. It will be a year I will never forget. Hope I get to see you guys perform this year. Have a great year and BLOW SOUTHERNERS!

Brings back some memories that's for sure. This was the second show I'd ever seen JSU perform; the first being the 98 firebird show. That show and the year I marched (2001) stand out as all out faves of mine.

The Southerners still have full flute and clarinet sections.

one good piccolo player can cover up several really good trumpet players, but one good marching french horn can cover up 10 good trumpets.

This video is about the best one from a filming standpoint. Lots of good close ups and distance shots. Most of 'em are shot from the press box and you can't get any idea what individuals and small groups are doing which contribute to the show's artistry.

The brass-line this year was just ridiculous.

It looks like you are out of luck if you play a clarinet or flute. I think I have seen a sax or two. I remember when JSU had all instruments.

Now JSU is more like a BOA band than The Marching Southerners.
