- Along with the release of 'The Live Anthology' (2009) came a DVD of the band's New Year's Eve 1978 concert in Santa Monica, CA. However, the entire show has never surfaced in an official capacity, as the band played "Runaway" with Del Shannon that night, but it hasn't surfaced beyond a grainy video.
That night the band played a few then-unreleased songs that would be released the following year: "Refugee" and "Casa Dega." The latter song would only come to be performed a few more times after its release as the B-side to "Don't Do Me Like That." Luckily, we have a video performance of this song from this concert.
Most of the show is on UA-cam in black and white, so I figured I'd upload the colorized version from the 'Live Anthology' package. Enjoy!
This song is a classic Masterpiece that never got the recognition it should have.
Tom has so many songs that don't get air time that are absolute bangers. He is one of the best songwriters ever without a doubt. The Hearbreakers are a criminally underrated band.
Tom at the Zenith of his artistic powers
This is my favorite Petty song, I know it’s kinda short but I come to this every now and then. ❤😌It holds a special place in my heart.
I have loved Tom petty and the heartbreakers, since I was going to school one day and here comes my girl came on the Radio…I did more research and bought all his previous Albums. I miss him so much, he was an inspiration to me growing up…
This is the first song my Future sent me after our first sleepover;) I literally fell in love with this woman and continue to fall in love with her every single day. Great song and an amazing songwriter. 🌾💞🪶
This should have been a huge radio hit
Then BMG wouldn't let us see this.
Dannnngg !! What they gave the world is immeasurable!!💜💜🎶💘
I love this simple little song. And I miss you Tom. Thanks f or this treasure.
My favorite TP song. He makes me proud to be from Florida
We're listening Mr Petty. We're listening....
Great footage of a very youthful still new band.I doubt anyone in that room was thinking they would have an astounding 40yr career.
The more I hear his songs, his videos, how he collaborated with so many other artists, it just boggles my mind that he was such an awesome musician! He didn't rely on schtick stuff, as other rockers did, he relied on his intuition of what worked, what didn't, improving on both. Tom, may you continue to make beautiful music in eternity, learning to fly even as you are free fallin'...you are so missed here, but as long as we have THIS...we will survive til we meet again in eternity.
One of my absolute favorite songs!
Great song and great place!
Cassadaga is the medium and psychic capital of the world.
We're all just looking for what we lost in the past...
I used to go to Casa Dega when I lived in Florida and then the springs for a swim 🥰 The readers there are pretty amazing!
It's amazing to go back and listen to the quality of Tom's Songs right out the gate. He obviously improved and got more polished. However. The music he created with the band from the get go is better than most bands ever reach at their peak. It says a lot about why they were still putting out the best music around 40yrs into there career. Everything ends but I'm sure Tom would have been productive for many yrs had he not passed. He never stopped and relied on the hits. Hypnotic Eye was a fantastic final album. I'll be rockin out to Tom Petty till the end of my days to!
He would have also made it big as an actor if he really wanted. I am glad he gifted the world with his marvelous song stories. And the genious sound that is timeless. It has adrenoline.
Saw the Heartbreakers in 1978. In San Diego. They played this song and the crowd lost its shit!
" In Casa Dega"
Tom always had such great attitude in those young years.
DE FRANCE.Cette chanson est extraordinaire. Pourquoi n’a t-elle pas eu de plus succès ?Il semblerait que il l ait très peu jouée par la suite.
Un des mystères de sa carrière !Il l'interprète de façon magistrale.
Love this song very much. Sounding slower here than the record. But Tom rules. I don’t care how it’s done it’s great. 🎸🎼❤️💔
Low key my favorite song from the Torpedoes sessions!🤘😎🤘
Legendary
One of my favorites❤❤❤
Great stuff ...Thanl you!!!
omg i've never heard or seen video of this song live! "casa dega" is one of my most favourite of tom & the heartbreakers, it baffled me why it never made it on DAMN THE TORPEDOES it is MAGNIFICENT! as a kid i treasured my 45 of "don't do me like that" as this was the b-side and i played the grooves off of it lol.
thank you thank you for this vid!! ❤
2022🤗🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶
Thank you so much for posting. I've loved this song since I first heard it on a late-night radio show, and then bought the single. way back just after Damn the Torpedoes came out.
color version, a masterpiece
❤❤❤
There are still so many of Toms songs for me to learn! Thank you
Awesome tuné
Never heard of it
Till they released
Damn the torpedoes" - Deluxe version 👍🏽
So many great tunes on that album. It’s hard to pick a favorite. Thanks for posting this and all the others.
❤😊
Sooo niceeee thank you for posting this!!!
Love it! This is a great song, but I never got the deluxe edition of this album, because to me the original release is perfect as is, maybe my favorite album of all time. This performance points out just how central Benmont was to the HB’s sound...I’ll never really forgive Jeff Lynne for taking over piano parts on the albums he produced...
What a priceless jewel. I am honoured to be here/hear now. Thank you more than you know.🎼💞

I will have to search for the grainy Del Shannon video. THAT would be awesome!
You were at the concert in San Francisco 78? California
They didn't quite get this right in the studio version. But this is a masterpiece Tom Petty at his zenith
"...35 acres of weird people."
Went there twice. First time as a New Ager. Then I became a Christian and went back. Psychics who were eager to give a reading the first tone, closed their doors as we walked by! We didn’t want a reading anyway. Devil!s gameZ!
35 Acres of weird people yeah Tom I guess so!! ✨️🤣🎃🪄
Drum beat seems a bit different
