That dude from Florida, Petty, was a poet Laureate of American music. A Southern man who never forgot his roots and wasn't afraid to display his influences and his love in performing to the legions of people who got what he was doing.
Tom Petty is the only musician/celebrity whose death caused me to cry. I am 61 and grew up in Florida listening to Tom Petty from the beginning. Even now, I tear up thinking about the great talent that we lost. We appreciate it all, Tom!
About as faultless live version of any song as you're ever likely to see. The musicianship, the pacing, the vocal delivery...every twist and turn is a wonder to behold. Thank you Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers. Always.
Tom Petty's death was the first non family member that I ever cried for, and mourned. His lyrics have always touched me in a way that no other musician, regardless of song writing genius (Lennon/McCartney, Dylan, etc.), ever has or ever will. I saw him in concert over 20 times from 1986 up until the last 2 shows where I saw him in 2017. I've seen him in Indiana, Red Rocks, Connecticut, NY, MA, IL, San Diego, Kansas City, and on and on. God bless him and everything he did for music, and for the people who loved him for it.
I saw him in LA once and Joni Mitchell was seated several rows back. I'd gotten front row seats. That was just before Tom got sober so he was a little sloppy. Still a good show. Much better than any other band I saw ever.
Kind of the same..... Bernie Mac, John Ritter, and Tom Petty.....got tears for their passing. Didn't know them in the least outside of watching or listening..... I knew they were special though.
Wow what an honor that must have been for Tom to have fans like you. That’s a lot of years and places. I must say I’m Impressed🙏 I love Tom Petty he carries it in his soul for sure. It translates from there and it affects us in our soul. It is my regret I never saw him live. Nameste🙏 Tom
Give Mike Campbell his credit for being Tom’s right hand all those years. Pretty clear Petty was orchestrating the chord changes but Mike handled the arpeggios and the high octave stuff. Big ups to Ben Mont on the keys. The whole ensemble was on point for this minor key gem. I really like the shift to the major key for the chorus. Then back to that e minor. I keep coming back because this never gets old. Petty’s lyrics are priceless and timeless.
@@kitboysen441 people that know music/rock n roll know EXACTLY who these legendary men are, but true, not enough credit, which is how they like it, Mike NEVER wanted the spotlight, just to be Tom’s brother in rock/life…Benmont is the most sought after session pianist there is, all the greats requested his talent
@@liamco1128 you are soooo lucky. You got to see musical history. This reminds me of when, in the 90s, my friends asked me to see Stevie Ray Vaughn. I had to work and said "next yr". A month later was the helicopter accident. RIP Stevie! I still regret not seeing him to this day.
It's amazing, and I loved the song already in 1994 when I got the album.. How come he extend this song this much and not any of his greater hits..? I am not complaining here! Greetings from Sweden! 🎸
I have watched this video over 50 times and I still get the goosebumps every single time. So much talent, its scary. RIP Tom, you will live on forever in our hearts.

i guess what I always liked about Tom Petty is he always put everything into his music, his whole heart and soul. At about 7 minutes in, when the crowd thought the tune was over and started to applaud, he just started back up again and gave them another 6 minutes of virtuoso soul-baring music. Damn it was good. Maybe one of the best I've ever heard.

Why the hell would anyone give this a thumbs down! Are they jealous? These guys were nothing less than awesome! Tom Petty was a very kind considerate person, who ONLY wanted to please his audience.

Good Lord, has it really been more than 4 years already? Anyone else feel like they've lost about two years of their life? I will always remember the day he died. I had read online he was in the hospital. They announced once that he had died, then corrected it that he was still alive. I had tickets to see Gov't Mule that night at HoB Houston. In between songs a stage hand walked out and handed Warren a piece of paper. He spoke to everyone in the band, and then without saying much, they started playing one of Tom's songs. I was so emotional I don't even remember which song. There was not a dry eye in the house.

My 5 yr. Old son requested to hear this song tonight at bath Time.....the magic of Tom Petty and the hearbreakers is and will forever remain timeless.....we miss you here at our home Tom, but you live in our hearts.
For today, I'll stop and make a comment. Gratitude that our paths crossed before the world discovered Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. Before he became a King. When this DJ was Music Director of a radio station in San Jose and 6-10pm DJ. When Tom and Ron Blair came by our studio at KSJO between the soundcheck and the show. Their first in the San Francisco Bay Area at the Keystone Palo Alto. From that night, I was convinced that they had magic and fire. And after the show, we stayed up till dawn at a motel. Yes, the stories we could tell. This performance appears to be from the 30th Ann tour, Gainesville, Florida. Thankful that I can still play it on the radio. Just because. ☮💌
This truly is a magnificent live version of this song. This transcends rock and roll; this is true artistry, magic. I always knew all of these guys were good at what they do, but in this song, I really appreciate what true craftsmen they all are!
Perfection, it often brings tears to my eyes. Not only for the loss of Mr. Petty but all my friends and family that I have lost. You’re all so very missed. RIP
Tribute bands are the next best thing, if their good. So far the ones I've seen are on every note, and keep the sound alive. It's always good to get albums and CDs, so we can have them forever. I purchased a DVD through our PBS station or one of his concerts. Always wanted to see him live, but missed the opportunity...Tom's spirit will always live on...🎶💖🎸🎤
So true Bill, it’s great that we can listen to these giants of music, but any new talent is non-existent. Rock music I think has had it’s day. Gene Simmonds from Kiss said as much :-(
I watched this performance on axis TV at least 20 times! It is the most mesmerizing version of this song! R.I.P. Thomas Earl Petty! Thank God! 🙏 I grew up with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers!❤❤❤
Just gotta focus on the positive ❤️ I’m blessed to share a show at the Berkeley with my now wife Stephanie! Took my son to this tour as his first concert. He was seven with some speech challenges and loved Tom Betty. The challenges are gone, but not his love for Tom Petty. RIPTP.
Je frissonne de bonheur en écoutant cette musique, merci Mr Petty de nous avoir laissé cette musique, ça change de toutes les merdes actuelles que nous entendons partout.
Mike's guitar tone speaks to my soul, he fits Tom's vocals, lyrics perfectly. Tom's guitar playing and Mike's are a twin flame. I saw them live 3 times from 1980 to 1994, always incredible.
Very “intoxicating “ if you understand what’s behind this genius and the craft. Fir me its unimaginable to be able to create such original and an authentic sound that takes you on a ride that brings you down so beautifully...the song and performance is a “ real love masterpiece!😘😎😘🧚🏻♂️🎸🎸✌️
It is absolute bliss when taken into Pettys complete rise from the beginning ... this performance is just an absolute culmination of years of greatness by a band ... minus Stan of course. I just luv it, when I think of Mike n Tom going thru years this is just the ultimate when they sync up. JMO.
My goodness! If this isn’t perfection I simply don’t know what it is.. Rest easy Tom and thank you for gems like this…Your work will be admired for generations!! Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers ladies and gentlemen…Accept no substitute!
I'm going to go on and guess the haters don't care for great literature either. I loved this song long before I heard the live version, could not believe how much more beautiful and profound he managed to make it. Stunning, stunning, stunning.
@@myrtiebaxter1689 Thanks ... love it on its own merits but it also reminds me of a poem called My Last Duchess ... www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/43768/my-last-duchess
Thank you Tom and the Heartbreakers for inmeasurably enriching my life. Tom's death just about did me in. I thank God for his Life. He truly was a light in the darkness. RiIP Tom, we miss you!
I cried so much when he died. He is my favorite, I saw him at his 40th anniversary tour in Denver before he passed away. So glad I did. I would see him every chance I got. Rip king 👑
The Heartbreakers homecoming concert. It's obvious that Tom, Mike Benmont, Scott and Ferrone worked hard to deliver their best possible performances to their home folk with this album. This version of "Good To Be King" is an absolute masterpiece and will go down in my books as the best song I have ever seen from a live concert. Even the camera work was artistic. It is said that "Art is the Quality of Communication" and this song and it's performance fit that definition in that it reached out and touched my musical soul and took me to places I have never been. And that possibly, is the purpose of music It's my opinion that Tom Petty and the Hearbreakers are the best musical ensemble to ever come out of America.
I'm a pretty big Petty fan, and was devastated when he died. I always loved this song, have heard it countless times but never this long version. I thought, man that first 6 minutes was perfect, existential, then the second 6 minutes just absolutely blew me totally away. I gotta go lay down for a while. TP, we all miss you but your music will live for freakin ever!
Amazing. Just saw this on AXS in concert. I cried like a child. This song evokes SO MUCH EMOTION! (not so much the regular version, but the guitars, piano...)God-the more it went on, the more I didn't want it to end!! Thank you for the music, Tom!!!
This is pretty much as good as it gets in rock and roll music. Such a tight band and Tom's voice has so much charisma . Miss this man a lot . At least he left us with great memories.
Was für ein unglaublich guter Musiker.die band nicht vergessen. Man spürt die freude und den😂Spaß, bei dem was sie machen. Dieses lied ist eines der besten, die ich gehört haben durfte. Liebe Grüße an all die so tollen Musiker. Ihr macht aus unseren Gedanken worte. 😊😊😊😊😊
One of the most awesome performances ever by Tom Petty Mike Campbell and the Heartbreakers. Glad this is on video, his band was one of the tightest bands out there, it's what happens when they play 40 years together. They were family, like brothers from their teenage years. The moment I like is Tom and Mike at the end playing together and smiling. I miss Tom Petty so much, probably the most of these musicians who passed in recent years. I just performed a set recently of his songs, and Good To Be King was one of the songs. Had a lead guitarist alongside me who gave the lead guitar parts lots of emotion. I think of Tom's music and I feel the emotion. It's hat makes Tom live still inside each and every one of us. Rest in peace Tom, we will never forget, thanks for your gift of music and songs. ❤
Me too Denise, so wonderful. I’m mesmerised. I only started to listen to him a couple of days ago. I had no idea he was a rock musician. I’ve missed out all these years!
God, I miss him... this is a freaking clinic on how you tell a story and capture the hearts and minds and souls of your audience.... There will never be another one like you, Tom, never...
Only one word : class !!! only that !! class ... a beautiful music with soul and heart .... Eric from France RIP Mr Tom Petty you and your band are the best in my heart !!! thanks for the joy every day !!!
God, I miss Tom Petty. What a great performance! Great to see him take a lead and really stretch out on it. I never saw him live, which is my own fault. I'm glad there's content like this out there.
Der beste live Musiker aller Zeiten mitsamt seiner Band. Manchmal frier ich bei diesem lied. Unglaublich gut und so schön gespielt.Schade, hab ihn leider nie live gesehen. Lang lebe tom petty.
who are the 16 idiots who voted against this that obviously have no taste in music whatsoever. This is the sickest version of the song ever Tom Petty rules!
A MASTERPIECE OF AWESOMENESS...!!! It truly shows the talent of Tom’s compositions and how this band created works that were under appreciated and overlooked ,but NOW are considered iconic and timeless...!!! R.I.P. Tom... so happy to have seen you work...!!!🙏👏👍
Tom you are the King!!! Your in our Hearts always! Hard to believe we lost you 3 years ago today. Your music and all that you gave us Lives on forever. Miss you Tom Petty❤️🙏🏻🎸🎼
I was about 23 when this came out. I saw this band as a band with strange videos. Nothing more. I'm thrilled I felt that way because at 47 I"m just "discovering" them. I always liked them but never appreciated them for the amazing musicianship as well as Tom's writing ability. No doubt one of the best bands of all time.
They did have weird but AMAZING videos, but they did not always decide how those videos would go. If you haven't had a chance to seriously dive into his catalog...please do it. Him and the Heartbreakers mad so much genre infused music, and that's not even counting the Greatest Hits. They could play blues, rock, jazz, reggae even(Don't Pull Me Over). They were one of the most well rounded bands I have ever had the pleasure of hearing!!!
There are many like you BluesMan! I was lucky enough to see them in Hyde Park last year. I never took much notice until I seen a set on TV from the Isle of Wight Festival in 2012 and I was hooked. Have look on YT for that Isle of Wight set, and you will understand why I got hooked.
Jeez. Just jeez! One the the things that made Tom’s work so amazing is that the Heartbreakers were always such an antonishing band. Thank heavens they kept it together, even with some personnel changes, all those years. Tom, Mike, Benmont. ❤️
My English language is limited , but my music taste is 1000% good Bless these great musicians & America too.

Perfection, it often brings tears to my eyes. Not only for the loss of Mr. Petty but all my friends and family that I have lost. You’re all so very missed. RIP
RIP Mr Tom Petty, thanks for being part of the soundtrack of my life.
It’s tragic this type of musicianship and artistry is dying. We need more of this in our lives.
Thankfully we have the internet so his music will always be here......hopefully! ✌️
Gene Simmonds from Kiss said as much :-(
You nailed it my friend!
I totally agree. It was a great loss when he passed. He is truly missed. Best concert ever seen.
Rip brother Tom 🙏🏼 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 I didn’t stop dancing with her all night long and I’m pretty damn sure I shed a tear of happiness when this jam played! This song touches the soul! ❤️
Gone but never forgotten, RIP 😭 Tom 💕 😇
Absolutely stunning live version of one of Tom's best song's. Loved it!
HE PLAYS EFFORTLESSLY IMAGINE SITTING AROUND WITH HIM YEARS AGO
One of the greatest parts of musicianship, in full display. A man who loves his audience and they love him back.
Effortless because he practiced. ❤
Steve Ferrone is such an incredible drummer.
Steve Ferrone is one of two Steve's that made me understand playing for the song, and how valuable the space between notes truly is.
Hes toured with the best. Check him out backing Genesis live on Carpet Crawlers. Clapton too with his all star band.
He's fantastic.
Took my son to this tour as his first concert. He was seven with some speech challenges and loved Tom Betty. The challenges are gone, but not his love for Tom Petty. RIPTP.
This is my moral compass for classic rock for there will never be another elvis and another lennon and there will never be another tom petty
Tom Petty was one artist that I had hoped that I would meet some day before I die. Lost out on that.
#MeToo
Je frissonne de bonheur en écoutant cette musique, merci Mr Petty de nous avoir laissé cette musique, ça change de toutes les merdes actuelles que nous entendons partout.
Mike's guitar tone speaks to my soul, he fits Tom's vocals, lyrics perfectly. Tom's guitar playing and Mike's are a twin flame. I saw them live 3 times from 1980 to 1994, always incredible.
Tom crushed those solos…his tone was awesome
I own several 335’s because of Mike Campbell
Thank him for all he did and didn’t give us. He was so real and now he’s gone.
As long as we keep listening, Tom Petty will never die!
Long Live the King! ✌🏻
JMO.
Me I'm 73 years young, saw hendrix, this guy this group, he is up there, 😍 ❤️ wow 👍 still blows my mind 😕 💋🙏
This is what a Hammond 3b, a good dlide guitar
My goodness! If this isn’t perfection I simply don’t know what it is.. Rest easy Tom and thank you for gems like this…Your work will be admired for generations!! Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers ladies and gentlemen…Accept no substitute!
Magic.... Tom Petty and his crew are absolute magicians.
I'm going to go on and guess the haters don't care for great literature either. I loved this song long before I heard the live version, could not believe how much more beautiful and profound he managed to make it. Stunning, stunning, stunning.
You've got this right on the head it was amazing
@@myrtiebaxter1689 Thanks ... love it on its own merits but it also reminds me of a poem called My Last Duchess ... www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/43768/my-last-duchess
I just ignore the haters and whiners in this world today. Don’t have time for either. ✌️
508 ppl have no concept of emotion. Love when he jams with the drummer. Awesome !!!!!!! rip Tom
This belongs in a rock historic archive titled "how it's done".

yep .
Without a doubt. Cant think of a better way to say it.
Gilbert Gross bicycle by queen
+Gilbert Gross does it???
Thank you Tom and the Heartbreakers for inmeasurably enriching my life. Tom's death just about did me in. I thank God for his Life. He truly was a light in the darkness. RiIP Tom, we miss you!
I felt the same way. It helped to find Mike Campbell and The Dirty Knobs, feels like home.
My heart still breaks a little bit more every time I hear his music!! 😍🌹🌈🌠
Broke down in the public library....
I'm an old fart, 68 years old, and this is a great song, cause I am the KIng of my World.
Are we that old? Ha! Perhaps physically, but not mentally........
I concur!
I'm a kid (17 years old) and I dig this too!! Tom Petty is one of my heroes!
I cried so much when he died. He is my favorite, I saw him at his 40th anniversary tour in Denver before he passed away. So glad I did. I would see him every chance I got. Rip king 👑
Tom Petty was the coolest rock and roll star ever.
Sandra's TP f'n A!! right on,!!!
I would agree but Eddie van Halen exist
Tom Petty was number 1. Rest in peace💎
The Heartbreakers. Värdens bästa kompband🎁
Amen
Still so hard to think Tom isn't around. Damn. RIP Tom. You gave us so much great music.
Nik Gasway makes me weep now...
@@jatan1222 , you're not alone ...
This is pretty much as good as it gets in rock and roll music. Such a tight band and Tom's voice has so much charisma . Miss this man a lot . At least he left us with great memories.
This is the best version of "It's Good to be King" [Live] Just off the hook instrumentally sound.
Same
Has to be the greatest performance ever. Mike Campbell is one of the top 5 lead gutair men all time. Tom Petty is just phenomenal.
Guitar *people*
One of those videos where UA-cam should have a LOVE button 🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌
Was für ein unglaublich guter Musiker.die band nicht vergessen. Man spürt die freude und den😂Spaß, bei dem was sie machen. Dieses lied ist eines der besten, die ich gehört haben durfte. Liebe Grüße an all die so tollen Musiker. Ihr macht aus unseren Gedanken worte. 😊😊😊😊😊
Unglaublich schön. Lang lebe tom petty
Such a dreamy song with great lyrics and still a kick-ass yet mellow guitar solo. It's freaking amazing and never gets old.
Does Tom really ever get old? What a voice and writer.
What about face in the crowd . Bout as mellow as it gets
@@jackd1582 yeah but I said "mellow AND kickass. LOL Face in the Crowd is cool, too. :)
@@sharonwalsh7840 True . At that point I had only listened to about of this live one recording
Seriously how can anyone give this a thumbs down??? LOVE this version!
In this world some people don't like music. I m talking about good music!
this song is incredible!
And THIS is good music!
AnneP makeupandmore totally agree! One of the best bands hands down!
I think some people do it just to piss TP & THB fans off. They don't know what real music is today, they have tin ears.
Best concert ive ever seen by TPHB. WOW this is so touching, the way they connect with each other is sublime.
Benmont is so perfect. I love this version.
Love this version so much. Tom's guitar riffs are incredible. I could listen to this all day!
I love this version to
It makes you want to go down to the house in the woods doesn't it?

Me too Denise, so wonderful. I’m mesmerised. I only started to listen to him a couple of days ago. I had no idea he was a rock musician. I’ve missed out all these years!
@@apmills3406 You will find a great mountain of Tom ‘s genius music, a great man too.
the talent of this group of musicians is a beautiful thing!
Beautiful mix!!! This song is just God's Music!!! ♥️♥️♥️♥️
I listen to Tom on his Sirius radio channel. He has mentioned that this song means so very much to him.
It's one of my favorite songs of his. It's not one the greatest hits album, but man it should be.
God, I miss him... this is a freaking clinic on how you tell a story and capture the hearts and minds and souls of your audience....
There will never be another one like you, Tom, never...
Tell it....
I agree
some of his songs that used to make me happy, now make me sad knowing he's gone
On repeat. Soothes the soul. Thank you again mr Petty and your fine fine band
Only one word : class !!! only that !! class ... a beautiful music with soul and heart .... Eric from France
RIP Mr Tom Petty you and your band are the best in my heart !!! thanks for the joy every day !!!
I totally agree. If you are a living breathing human and love music at all, how can you not love this!
Fuck the Haters!
Définitivement mon groupe préféré ....Nostalgie , tristesse ,nous sommes inconsolables
No doubt one of the best bands of all time.
indeed!
Blues Man I agree. Now he's gone. I did get to see him in the 80s . Kinda hazy memories. RIP Tom.
There are many like you BluesMan! I was lucky enough to see them in Hyde Park last year. I never took much notice until I seen a set on TV from the Isle of Wight Festival in 2012 and I was hooked. Have look on YT for that Isle of Wight set, and you will understand why I got hooked.
@@colingraham9281 Will for sure check it out, Gone, but never, ever will he be forgotten.💞💙💔😍✨
Definitely one of the top 5 live performances of a song I have ever seen.
TOP 5 SONG OF ALL TIME. END OF STORY.
Doubt there will be one like this for a long long time.....RIP
Love the keyboards on this, Benmont is freaking outrageous. (I am a classical pianist)
Michael Dolan I don't play, but I'll tell you what a piano absolutely melts my insides. I would sit and listen to you play. Merry Christmas...
Love me some Benmont
Amazing, one of the best arrangements and solo parts I have ever heard, what a gift! RIP Tom, we missed you so much.
Steve Ferrone makes this song work. His groove is so wide open and relaxed. His outro groove on record is spectacular. Totally in the pocket.
Deep groove.
Steve is one of my all time faves
One solid drummer
Um, excuse me??? Tom Petty makes this song work. There's no song without Petty
Super morceau, superbe interprétation...un chouette morceau pour terminer un concert et/ou se dire au revoir...thanks for the music Mr Petty
He has always been King. I will miss his music and his wit. Time to fly Tom. Ya got your wings.
Tom Petty I would really enjoy a pint with you.Last of the great Rock Bands?Hope not, but!
It draws such an emotional response from me....I really feel the message...i feel that energy...it's such a haunting kind of a Song...incredible
Best recorded version of this song...just majestic. That vintage 335 MC is playing is as gorgeous as it sounds (especially with the Ebow)...
Jeez. Just jeez! One the the things that made Tom’s work so amazing is that the Heartbreakers were always such an antonishing band. Thank heavens they kept it together, even with some personnel changes, all those years. Tom, Mike, Benmont. ❤️
