The song becomes hypnotic at 7:00 my tearing time, one of the greatest false endings in music. I often stop the tube about 10:41 so it never really ends.
Wenn mann so ein geniales, für mich musikgeschichte spielt, hat man jeden Grund zu lachen. Einfach traumhaft. Ich werd es noch tausend mal hören. Danke an petty und band.
Say what you want about Elvis, The Beatles, Prince, MJ......Tom was (and still is) just as much of a musical gift to the world as each of them were. They all changed the world. They all affected lives. They were all strangers to no one, because we all knew them through their art. While we will never stop missing Tom, I still thank God for giving him to us as well as the technology to keep his life's work alive forever...
As a group, these guys were hard to match. No one trying to steal the show. Just pure talent working harmoniously. If you do not dig these guys, then you do not appreciate true rock and roll!
Perfection, it often brings tears to my eyes. Not only for the loss of Mr. Petty but all my friends and family that I have lost. You’re all so very missed. RIP
I can honestly tell you that my wife and I were in the FRONT ROW for this very concert in Gainesville and saw this awesome version live and in person. I've watched it dozens of times since and I still get chills when hear this very song on Sirius or re-live the concert on AXS TV. ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL!!! Love ya and miss ya Tom!
I watched it again this past Sat for the 5th or 6th time, it gets better every time. I cried through most of it while I ate an entire pint of B & J's Cherry Garcia. It is timeless for sure, one of the best concerts I never attended
Wow as someone who never got to see him live I am soooooo jealous. It will always be a regret of mine. I literally play his music EVERY day. I can’t stop. It makes me so sad knowing he’s not here anymore.😢
i guess what I always liked about Tom Petty is he always put everything into his music, his whole heart and soul. At about 7 minutes in, when the crowd thought the tune was over and started to applaud, he just started back up again and gave them another 6 minutes of virtuoso soul-baring music. Damn it was good. Maybe one of the best I've ever heard.
For today, I'll stop and make a comment. Gratitude that our paths crossed before the world discovered Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers. Before he became a King. When this DJ was Music Director of a radio station in San Jose and 6-10pm DJ. When Tom and Ron Blair came by our studio at KSJO between the soundcheck and the show. Their first in the San Francisco Bay Area at the Keystone Palo Alto. From that night, I was convinced that they had magic and fire. And after the show, we stayed up till dawn at a motel. Yes, the stories we could tell. This performance appears to be from the 30th Ann tour, Gainesville, Florida. Thankful that I can still play it on the radio. Just because. ☮💌
I miss him really bad. So, I learned the music he created and play it for myself and others who miss him too. The best tribute I could come up with. Thanks Tom.
What a band, they are even better live than in the studio. Highly underrated guitar player Mike Campbell. Fantastic keyboards. Truly a superband with Tom Petty as icing on top of it all,
Underrated? What? A great artist with performances even to this day..and Dirty Knobs. Who you see back there grinding it out with others and having a great time? Mike’s on low attitude. Check a little deeper ,,he’s not underrated,,never was overrated at all since a druggie who got his Creds being in a stupor on stage or dying at 27 being a fool…
Just gotta focus on the positive ❤️ I’m blessed to share a show at the Berkeley with my now wife Stephanie! Rip brother Tom 🙏🏼 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼 I didn’t stop dancing with her all night long and I’m pretty damn sure I shed a tear of happiness when this jam played! This song touches the soul! ❤️
Saw him in Atlanta a few months before he passed away. The stage was over flowing with talent. Journey well Tom, thank you for the music and good times.
My goodness! If this isn’t perfection I simply don’t know what it is.. Rest easy Tom and thank you for gems like this…Your work will be admired for generations!! Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers ladies and gentlemen…Accept no substitute!
MIND. BLOWN. Every time....Man, I miss these guys! 😭 I am SO happy I got to see them live in OTTAWA, before Tom passed away. I am SO grateful that he decided to come back to Ottawa for Blues Fest. BEST day of my life. My heart goes out to his family...Tom Petty really helped me, so thank you so much.
Mike's guitar tone speaks to my soul, he fits Tom's vocals, lyrics perfectly. Tom's guitar playing and Mike's are a twin flame. I saw them live 3 times from 1980 to 1994, always incredible.
I cried so much when he died. He is my favorite, I saw him at his 40th anniversary tour in Denver before he passed away. So glad I did. I would see him every chance I got. Rip king 👑
I watched this performance on axis TV at least 20 times! It is the most mesmerizing version of this song! R.I.P. Thomas Earl Petty! Thank God! 🙏 I grew up with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers!❤❤❤
My favorite live version of this song. There'll never be another Tom Petty. I'm glad I was alive to experience his music. He was perfection. 🎶Whadda ya want--perfection?🎶
Took my son to this tour as his first concert. He was seven with some speech challenges and loved Tom Betty. The challenges are gone, but not his love for Tom Petty. RIPTP.
God, I miss him... this is a freaking clinic on how you tell a story and capture the hearts and minds and souls of your audience.... There will never be another one like you, Tom, never...
I'm a pretty big Petty fan, and was devastated when he died. I always loved this song, have heard it countless times but never this long version. I thought, man that first 6 minutes was perfect, existential, then the second 6 minutes just absolutely blew me totally away. I gotta go lay down for a while. TP, we all miss you but your music will live for freakin ever!
Was für ein unglaublich guter Musiker.die band nicht vergessen. Man spürt die freude und den😂Spaß, bei dem was sie machen. Dieses lied ist eines der besten, die ich gehört haben durfte. Liebe Grüße an all die so tollen Musiker. Ihr macht aus unseren Gedanken worte. 😊😊😊😊😊
One of the most awesome performances ever by Tom Petty Mike Campbell and the Heartbreakers. Glad this is on video, his band was one of the tightest bands out there, it's what happens when they play 40 years together. They were family, like brothers from their teenage years. The moment I like is Tom and Mike at the end playing together and smiling. I miss Tom Petty so much, probably the most of these musicians who passed in recent years. I just performed a set recently of his songs, and Good To Be King was one of the songs. Had a lead guitarist alongside me who gave the lead guitar parts lots of emotion. I think of Tom's music and I feel the emotion. It's hat makes Tom live still inside each and every one of us. Rest in peace Tom, we will never forget, thanks for your gift of music and songs. ❤
The Heartbreakers homecoming concert. It's obvious that Tom, Mike Benmont, Scott and Ferrone worked hard to deliver their best possible performances to their home folk with this album. This version of "Good To Be King" is an absolute masterpiece and will go down in my books as the best song I have ever seen from a live concert. Even the camera work was artistic. It is said that "Art is the Quality of Communication" and this song and it's performance fit that definition in that it reached out and touched my musical soul and took me to places I have never been. And that possibly, is the purpose of music It's my opinion that Tom Petty and the Hearbreakers are the best musical ensemble to ever come out of America.
Very “intoxicating “ if you understand what’s behind this genius and the craft. Fir me its unimaginable to be able to create such original and an authentic sound that takes you on a ride that brings you down so beautifully...the song and performance is a “ real love masterpiece!😘😎😘🧚🏻♂️🎸🎸✌️
It is absolute bliss when taken into Pettys complete rise from the beginning ... this performance is just an absolute culmination of years of greatness by a band ... minus Stan of course. I just luv it, when I think of Mike n Tom going thru years this is just the ultimate when they sync up. JMO.
This is pretty much as good as it gets in rock and roll music. Such a tight band and Tom's voice has so much charisma . Miss this man a lot . At least he left us with great memories.
Why the hell would anyone give this a thumbs down! Are they jealous? These guys were nothing less than awesome! Tom Petty was a very kind considerate person, who ONLY wanted to please his audience.
Only one word : class !!! only that !! class ... a beautiful music with soul and heart .... Eric from France RIP Mr Tom Petty you and your band are the best in my heart !!! thanks for the joy every day !!!
Tom you are the King!!! Your in our Hearts always! Hard to believe we lost you 3 years ago today. Your music and all that you gave us Lives on forever. Miss you Tom Petty❤️🙏🏻🎸🎼
A MASTERPIECE OF AWESOMENESS...!!! It truly shows the talent of Tom’s compositions and how this band created works that were under appreciated and overlooked ,but NOW are considered iconic and timeless...!!! R.I.P. Tom... so happy to have seen you work...!!!🙏👏👍
God, I miss Tom Petty. What a great performance! Great to see him take a lead and really stretch out on it. I never saw him live, which is my own fault. I'm glad there's content like this out there.
OMG! Listening to Tom Petty while cleaning in the garage. This song was always great, but this absolutely incredible. Never heard it before in a live concert like this. I am blown away. Thank you for sharing this!!
the song I keep going back to me as a confidence builder. We need to maintain our strength in the vision for the future far beyond now, this song seems to feel the space to imagine such
Oh my! I remember I asked for this record as a xmas present when I was 16. It has been, since then, my place of recovery. Tom Petty surely was a Great Soul.
Jeez. Just jeez! One the the things that made Tom’s work so amazing is that the Heartbreakers were always such an antonishing band. Thank heavens they kept it together, even with some personnel changes, all those years. Tom, Mike, Benmont. ❤️
One I dont think he is high on drugs he is a true artist and they get off on jamming this way. This is his most awesome live song. Mr. Petty is a great loss to the music world and all people can worry about is how high he was is kind of sad. I have seen him play almost every tour in the last 10 years and really hate not seeing him this summer. RIP Tom Petty you are truly missed. Hope your still RUNNING DOWN A DREAM.
We lost David Bowie, Chris Squire (YES), Lemmy, Glenn Frey, George Martin, Prince and sooo many others over the last year. The great news is we still have Tom Petty!!
Everyone is going to heaven or hell because everyone has a choice now. Jesus was God in the flesh and gave His Life for all mankind that would merely accept the free gift He was offering, Faith that He is who he said He was. So simple, even a child can grasp it. Examine that for yourself, please.
Lyle Pegrim you say the gift is free? really now? or is there a catch you will tell us all about? if the gift is truly free, then I think we will all accept, right?
lyle you are the first i have seen in my lifetime to say the CHRIST was/is GOD because that has been my belief since hearing "WIND UP SONG" by JETHRO TULL. LATER, THE 📒 PAD🏡 SLD
atleast once a month i find myself drawn back to this masterpiece....it reminds me that good musicians did once exist...rest in peace Tom Petty...well done Hearybreakers....
Beautiful work as always. Scott Thurston is such an integral part of the Heartbreakers, always delivering vocals & great work on many instruments, from the shadows.
Scott adds alot of nice work with another HOF'r...i.e. Jackson Browne too. And Mike Campbell plays the stealthy figure role on the list of great guitarists! Lotta talent amok here. Outstanding. Appreciate it I do.
Is this beautiful or what. My sister just told me it's been 6 years since Tom left this world. He'll never really be gone. He filled so many of my days and nights with his beautiful music. I hope he knew just how special he was and still is. I miss you Tom Petty❤
I think this version is great! It was always my most favorite song of his...and now my heart is so SAD that he is gone! I get goose bumps when I listen to this beautiful melody....RIP Tom
I just got finished at this concert in Seattle. This is by far my favorite song they played and the youtube version does it no justice. Truly the best piece of music I've ever heard.
Man, Tom had it together! Yeah he was a Cool Florida Dude and you can detect some of that in his music and maybe some Bob Dylan. The Tom Petty's of this world don't come around too often. Thank God for Recordings. Yeah I know, I miss him too!!
This version is pure magic. RIP to one of the great American Treasures.
The song becomes hypnotic at 7:00 my tearing time, one of the greatest false endings in music. I often stop the tube about 10:41 so it never really ends.
Yes
Tom and Mike smiling at each other near the end. They just knew. They nailed it.
That little smile between the two of them speaks volumes. It says it all.
Wenn mann so ein geniales, für mich musikgeschichte spielt, hat man jeden Grund zu lachen. Einfach traumhaft. Ich werd es noch tausend mal hören. Danke an petty und band.
If I could live in the past, I would. I don’t understand this world we live in today.
You got that right brother what is this world coming to
So do I.
Same here....
Over "12 minutes" of pure classic Rock n' Roll - if this doesn't make you a Tom Petty fan there's just no hope for you !!! RIP Tom - miss you !!!
Say what you want about Elvis, The Beatles, Prince, MJ......Tom was (and still is) just as much of a musical gift to the world as each of them were. They all changed the world. No cap at all.....
I concur and Elvis was his inspiration to become a rock star when Tom met him at 11 years old

My English language is limited , but my music taste is 1000% good Bless these great musicians & America too.
There are some live recordings that capture pure magic and pure energy and feeling. This is one that I never get tired of .
As a group, these guys were hard to match. No one trying to steal the show. Just pure talent working harmoniously. If you do not dig these guys, then you do not appreciate true rock and roll!
Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers is the only salvation from this messed up world of today.
King Crimson also🤩
Come back, Tom. The world darkened when you moved on. We need you now.
Perfection, it often brings tears to my eyes. Not only for the loss of Mr. Petty but all my friends and family that I have lost. You’re all so very missed. RIP
This is maybe the greatest live song ever played
You speak truth!
There is no maybe ❤
Hell yes!
This is my moral compass for classic rock for there will never be another elvis and another lennon and there will never be another tom petty
I can honestly tell you that my wife and I were in the FRONT ROW for this very concert in Gainesville and saw this awesome version live and in person. I've watched it dozens of times since and I still get chills when hear this very song

you just made everyone who's watched this very very jealous. To have seen this 1st hand live must have been spine chilling. thanks for the memory.
You were King on that night
I watched it again this past Sat for the 5th or 6th time, it gets better every time. I cried through most of it while I ate an entire pint of B & J's Cherry Garcia. It is timeless for sure, one of the best concerts I never attended

Wow as someone who never got to see him live I am soooooo jealous. It will always be a regret of mine. I literally play his music EVERY day. I can’t stop. It makes me so sad knowing he’s not here anymore.😢
Tom Petty was one artist that I had hoped that I would meet some day before I die. Lost out on that.

How can a song with only three chords be so moving and powerful? Bless you, Tom Petty. You are missed.
Sometimes 3 chords are all you need to say everything there is to say
He WAS Tom Petty !
Thank him for all he did and didn’t give us. He was so real and now he’s gone.
Tom Petty was the coolest rock and roll star ever.
Sandra's TP f'n A!! right on,!!!
I would agree but Eddie van Halen exist
Tom Petty was number 1. Rest in peace💎
The Heartbreakers. Värdens bästa kompband🎁

Tom crushed those solos…his tone was awesome
I own several 335’s because of Mike Campbell
I cried so much when he died. He is my favorite, I saw him at his 40th anniversary tour in Denver before he passed away. So glad I did. I would see him every chance I got. Rip king 👑

I agree
some of his songs that used to make me happy, now make me sad knowing he's gone
I'm a pretty big Petty fan, and was devastated when he died. I always loved this song, have heard it countless times but never this long version.

Unglaublich schön. Lang lebe tom petty
Schon tausend mal gehört, immer wieder faszinierend!!! Schade, was hätte Tom Petty noch für gute Musik machen können!!!
This is the best version of "It's Good to be King" [Live] Just off the hook instrumentally sound.
Same
Steve Ferrone is such an incredible drummer.
Steve Ferrone is one of two Steve's that made me understand playing for the song, and how valuable the space between notes truly is.
Hes toured with the best. Check him out backing Genesis live on Carpet Crawlers. Clapton too with his all star band.
He's fantastic.
The one group that my wife, me & our two kids all loved. Those concerts were really special.
One of the most awesome performances ever by Tom Petty Mike Campbell and the Heartbreakers. Has to be the greatest performance ever. Mike Campbell is one of the top 5 lead gutair men all time. Tom Petty is just phenomenal.

Best concert ive ever seen by TPHB. WOW this is so touching, the way they connect with each other is sublime.
One of the greatest parts of musicianship, in full display. A man who loves his audience and they love him back.
Effortless because he practiced. ❤
This is pretty much as good as it gets in rock and roll music. Such a tight band and Tom's voice has so much charisma . Miss this man a lot . At least he left us with great memories.
I listen to Tom on his Sirius radio channel. He has mentioned that this song means so very much to him.
It's one of my favorite songs of his. It's not one the greatest hits album, but man it should be.
Why the hell would anyone give this a thumbs down! Are they jealous? These guys were nothing less than awesome! Tom Petty was a very kind considerate person, who ONLY wanted to please his audience.
THANK you Mr. Petty I know cant hear it for all you did for music..and thank you Mr. Campbell who can hear..

Top notch Tom Petty & Co.
Best recorded version of this song...just majestic. That vintage 335 MC is playing is as gorgeous as it sounds (especially with the Ebow)...
Now thats a superstar .

Appreciate it I do.
love how he takes the ending of 'good to be king' and makes it even better I mean its already amazing but what a nice little addition....
yes I loved that little change to it's more trancy now...Mike Campbell is phenomenal
TOP 5 SONG OF ALL TIME. END OF STORY.
Wow this is so special the coolest guy ever just amazing performance i saw him at Knebworth around 1978 i new then he would go far but this is amazing
Me too. I went to see him not the headliners Genesis, who were btw also great.
Is this beautiful or what. My sister just told me it's been 6 years since Tom left this world. He'll never really be gone. He filled so many of my days and nights with his beautiful music. I hope he knew just how special he was and still is. I miss you Tom Petty❤
I've seen this video too many times to count. Haven't watched it in a few weeks. Got all-body goosebumps again. Happens every time.
I think this version is great! It was always my most favorite song of his...and now my heart is so SAD that he is gone! I get goose bumps when I listen to this beautiful melody....RIP Tom
I love this song. You are so missed Tom Petty. You live on through your legacy. Rock on, Southern boy.
I just got finished at this concert in Seattle. This is by far my favorite song they played and the youtube version does it no justice. Truly the best piece of music I've ever heard.
SUPER !!!!!
He was a King!
Transcends pain and worry. This is what peace sounds like. What a beautiful gift!
Great song from his best album...Wildflowers.....man I got goosebumps watching this mind boggling version.
The band: again, quality. In a class all its own, singular. This is one of my favorites, when considering both lead singer with his band.
Je frissonne de bonheur en écoutant cette musique, merci Mr Petty de nous avoir laissé cette musique, ça change de toutes les merdes actuelles que nous entendons partout.
Man, Tom had it together! Yeah he was a Cool Florida Dude and you can detect some of that in his music and maybe some Bob Dylan. The Tom Petty's of this world don't come around too often. Thank God for Recordings. Yeah I know, I miss him too!!
