    Totally agree about the piano intro. It elevates an already terrific song to another level. The anguish in his voice during the last verse never fails to move me...

    I wish the piano intro. could be included in the studio-version, which would make it sooo much better...

    Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers = Best Rock n Roll band on the planet - then & now. Awesome live performances. When you're in the middle of thousands of people singing along to every word of every song and it's so obvious that he and the guys are enjoying the audience as much as the audience is enjoying them - it is the coolest thing ever. After all these years, Tom Petty still introduces himself and the band & thanks the audience for being there - who does that? Then they play their hearts out.

    • @kimberlybellefontaine1215
      @kimberlybellefontaine1215 6 років тому +9

      OMG, I sooooo agree with you! Sweetest thing EVER that he still introduces his band to the audience....and also thanks the audience for being so wonderful. Who does that anymore? No one. No one but the incomparable Tom Petty, that's who. And now we've lost him....and I'm still so sad. :(

    Here's a fine example of why Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have endured. Great songwriting and delivery. Tom never phoned in a performance, it was always got 100% delivery. They were always committed to the integrity of the music (hence the piano.)

      We probably grew up around the same time and in a very similar setting (the South), and I agree, Tom Petty is fabulous. I like that he didn't tie himself to the South in his musical style, but his first few albums certainly sound like they came from a Southern sensibility.

      @americandude3053 6 років тому +18

      Yes. I couldn't understand why this song moved me so. Then, I figured out it's Mike's riff is more heartbreaking than the lyrics. It's a guitar crying...beautifully.

    • @kimberlybellefontaine1215
      @kimberlybellefontaine1215 6 років тому +14

      OMG, yes, absolutely!!! Tom has often said that he himself wouldn't be half as good as he is on the guitar if it hadn't been for Mike teaching him. I think Mike is one of THE mid underrated guitar players ever. It'll be interesting to see what he does and where his career takes him now that Tom is gone.... :(

      You wrote this 4 yrs ago. I hope time has eased some of the pain you were feeling back then. I'm in that exact position right now. It's sad, it's painful, it hurts many people, and it just plain sucks. I know the old saying. "this too shall pass...". But this just can't pass fast enough for me.....and even after it passes, it's gonna leave a lot of pain and heartach in its path :(. Yes, hearing Tom Petty sing about something so painful is somehow oddly comforting. I get that.

  • @stephenslusser2895

    This performance reminded me of how, even from the beginning, even before this, they always knew exactly what they wanted to sound like, and what they wanted to articulate. Like Tom said, when asked about being compared to other bands, "we don't try to sound like those bands, we try to sound like us". One would have had to of lived in those times, to appreciate what a rare treat this quality of a performance was, in that era of television. Tom Snyder was just a little blown away, by the amplification. They blew the roof off of that joint !

    Incredible that Tom is 64 and except for the drummer, the band is still exactly the same as it was back then. And the new music is just as meaningful and rocking as it was 30 years ago. They don't make em like this anymore!

      genesis0932 Tom always gave his group the credit that the fans gave him. he had great insight into being not just a great artist but a great human. Being Cherokee i have watched pow wows & if you watch him especially in songs like Southern Accents you will see him raise his arms really slow & bring them back down slowly as he closes his eyes & sounds like he's in a prayer with a Shaman like chant. i have picked up on this only bc I am Cherokee & watch their prayers to the Gods. Tom was never alone in his great music. His ancestors were with him.

    Funny about the comment Tom makes at the beginning about the piano. Some friends of mine did an album for Jive Records, and were able to get Benmont to put some organ on it. And sure enough, they had to fly the daggone thing in. Haha. I mean, when you get a sound like that, who could blame him?

    He put love first..what a good example of a human being..also quality..some people playing to acknowledge him..have to use synthetic beat machine type things..how sad. I hope young coming up people study how Tom did this...and he continually appreciated his back up band.

      Everyone, including me, has talked about the quality of Tom's music, and how hard it is to let him go, but when you said "He put love first, what a good example of a human being" , that has been how I have been remembering him, most of all. Not just anyone can write and perform like him, but anyone can follow his example of how to behave in polite society, and how to be real and honest, truthful and generous. Everyone knows that Tom's music will live on because of it's integrity. Like you, I want to be sure that we remember, that the man's character had integrity, and it was that integrity which comprised the very foundation of all that he did, and left us, in this world. You deserve your moniker of "insight", you can see !
