    In this video Daniel and Mick take a look at the basics of modulation effects. People are often confused about the differences between chorus, phaser, flanger, vibrato, tremolo and vibe (Uni-Vive phaser), so we’re here to unravel that in as simple a way as we dare!
    Please note, this is not a technical theory lesson. That stuff is documented brilliantly on Wikipedia and elsewhere if you want to understand the physics, with diagrams and stuff.
    The pedals we’re using today:
    • MXR Phase 90 (original script logo) - no longer made but try the reissues!

    We also use a Fire Custom Shop Carpe Diem distortion and Electro-Harmonix Deluxe Memory Man 1100-TT
    Interesting bits and go-to sections…

    A play through all of the pedals to compare: 23:03
    Mick is playing a Fender American Vintage ’62 Stratocaster. Dan is playing a Gretsch Player’s Edition 6118T Anniversary
    Amps are a Fender Super Reverb with 4x10 Jensen alnico speakers and a Hamstead Artist 20+RT through a 1x12 Celestion Alnico Blue.
    As always, all pedal and amp switching and routing is handled by TheGigRig G2.

    I love how when Dan was playing a Hendrix bit when talking about Vibe around 18:40, Mick has automatically switched his Strat to neck position.
    It was kind of like the famous name-drop horn - when Hendrix is mentioned, got to switch the Strat to neck!

    Fellas. Love the show. It inevitably ends up with me spending more money. How about you look at 'affordable' pedals and do a series of shows on entry level pedal board content? I know it's not quite as glamorous but it would help those of us who don't have unlimited budgets or are hobby players who love pedals but can't stump up £400 for a pedal (as much as we'd like to... Chase Bliss... how much am I lusting after those pedals...). Just a thought

    I would like to add a salient point about wonderful modulation which you hopefully find interesting: the song Vapour Trail by Ride - there has been some discussion about the guitars, and this is before the internet and when people just talked at gigs et cetera! So, was it chorus, flanger....? I thought it was a phaser but only on one of two amps. Anyway, Andy Bell says that it was just two Rickenbacker 12s recorded simultaneously and the slightly different strumming caused it! Brilliant! Have a listen.

    I finally understand the flanging effect, thanks. But: now I don't understand how the phasing effect works. It's becasue I learned in an audio engineering course that the flanger is doing a phase shift. It takes a signal, duplcates it by by using a delay circuit and then shift the delay time, so that the two signals are having slightly different phase. If this is true, what the phaser then is doing to the signal? Can not be the same because it sounds quite different.
    Another interesting question would be: what would the only wet signal of the flanger sound like? Would it also be a vibrato?
    And final question: if the chorus would have a feedback knob, would it sound like a flanger (a flanger in an extreme setting = long delay time)?
    Cheers from Germany ;-)

    "Vibe is actually modulating the frequencies as well". yes, because every phaser actually does as well. Both chorus/flanger and phaser modulate the frequency. Every "wet" phaser signal is a vibrato tone, but perhaps not a popular one, because the change is frequency dependent (phase) and very little (4 phases are very short delay). But so few phaser have a vibrato mode as the vibe does.

  • @gkol69
    @gkol69 7 років тому

    You said near the end of the video, that when you plug CE-1's two outputs separately it's one dry, one effected and that's not stereo. It IS stereo or else if both sides have dry+effect is dual mono and it's the same as splitting a mono signal with a Y-cable. Isn't stereo sending different sound parts to left and right to create 3D space? (There's an option on an old Boss Chorus to send dry/effect or dry+effect to A and dry+ inverted effect to B but that has a weird out of phase sound and it cancels out if you press the mono button on recording).

    I haven't dug through the comments but...Fender initially made amps with VIBRATO. I had a 1960 brownface Super that has a delicious pitch-shifting vibrato. Fender just didn't bother to change the nomenclature when switching to the less complicated and much cheaper photocell tremolo circuit. This of course doesn't change the fact that Leo was quite careless or clueless with the terms.

    Hey guys! I have a question about how these modulation effects affect one another.. It was interesting to learn that they're all more similar to one another in their topology than different. It was also fascinating to hear that they sounded awesome when all played all together, and were not as confusing to the ear (as I thought they'd be!) So my question is, do some of these modulation affects sound better when paired next to one another on our boards? I know this is probably subjective, but wondering if any of these effects cancel each other out, or are better when paired together in a signal chain. Thanks for another great show!! Cheers!

    Love this channel. It's inspired me to build my own pedalboard and start tweaking. I'd love to see a demonstration of how the guitar sits in the mix with a band behind it. Everything sounds awesome in 'bedroom mode' but one thing that happens a lot is the guitar disappears into the mix in a live situation. Any way you can demo the effects of different eq settings with drums and bass behind it?

    In the Tremolo vs Vibrato argument, switching back and forth between two notes more than a step apart is also called tremolo.

    Fender did make amps with true Vibrato: The Blonde Twin and Blonde Showman had very elaborate circuits to modulate pitch.. They sound amazing, like a pitchshifting Uni-Vibe, really cool sound..

    I'd LOVE to be able to hang and jam with you fellas....especially after I've completely redone my rig from watching and (most importantly) LEARNING...
    Since your other vid I've converted to a Wet/Dry setup (and made a post on TGP highlighting your vid as the inspiration) I'm ready to start playing with some additional modulation....I've had the pedals, but never really "got" how I wanted to use them..
    Oh, and I'm now really jones'n for a Gretcsh!

    Great show! I am still a little confused about the difference between a vibe and phaser. Is it a multi-stage phaser with a resistor? Anyway thank you so much for your videos, I've learned so much from them.

      Hi,
      The Phase 90 and Uni-vibe are both multi-stage phasers with four stages. The back and forth sweeping effect is created by modulating (i.e. changing over time) a resistor in each of the stages. This is done with an LFO (low frequency oscillator) circuit. The Speed knob on the effect is adjusting the frequency of that LFO. In other words, how fast the back and forth sweep happens.
      The key difference between the Phase 90 and Uni-vibe is *how* they modulate that resistor in each stage. In the Phase 90, the LFO is connected to an FET (Field Effect Transistor) in each stage. That FET changes its resistance based on the input of the LFO. In the Uni-vibe, a photo-resistor is used in each stage and the four photo-resistors are physically isolated in a compartment with a light bulb. The LFO in the Uni-vibe controls the brightness of the light bulb which, in turn, changes the resistance of the photo-resistors. The light bulb doesn’t respond as quickly as the FET to the input from the LFO and that’s what gives the Uni-vibe that “watery” sound.

    Super random and I know this is an old episode but i swear that the riff Dan plays at 2:48 with the vibe is from an amazing 90s PC game called Full Throttle. Super dark and funny game. Mark Hamill was one of the voice actors. Not that anyone cares....haha.

    I believe the lamp/optical sensor in the UniVibe only affects the shape of the LFO. In other words the sound doesn't "pass" through that circuitry. The LFO is the "automatic hand" doing sweeping in Choruses, Phasers, Flangers, Vibratos, Modulated Delays, Tremolos, Univibes etc

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow  6 років тому

      +Javi G of course, but it's all about that shape
