    I wish I could get batteries, but my town made it illegal to have them in residential areas. Someone is in bed with the local power company.

    Thanks for the video, as usual a great job of explaining in a way that is easily understood. Your mention of automatic load control (9:40) was appreciated. In my opinion this is the most needed but least appreciated new technology for maximize backup run time. Western mount states' utilities now proactively cut power, sometimes for over a day during wind events. And, smoke from wildfires cut solar production, often for several days. A few companies provide a level of automatic load management that can deal with such outages, even with no internet access (the cable internet amplifiers use grid power from the pole without backup). Generac's inverter even guarantees overload shedding with no communication link at all using its AC frequency control and power frequency activated load shed modules. I'm sure that other companies are now providing similar capabilities. Perhaps you could do a comparison video of what load management features manufacturers are offering for 2024.

    one platform solution is just a dream as most inverter maker still making their own platform. The only solution comes from Victron and its open source software which comes with open source Node-Red so one can automate everything as they like.

    Single platform is key. Example: my geothermal heat pump from Bosch needed to intersect with an energy recovery ventilator and it posed uncertainties for the installers about wiring and control. Installers who work on a flat rate will be more confident about their pricing with integrated systems.

      Yes, although it might seem restrictive, at least to an overall better experience. That way there’s one person to call. Only one company to hold responsible if something goes wrong.

    Thanks for the content. I started looking for an off grid solution for a property in Taos County where the only electric utility in all of northern NM , Kit Carson Electric Coop has never had a Solar friendly net metering program. And they have a a years long delay on new line extensions.
    My plan is to have off grid but ability to connect to KCE grid when or if available. Could care less about EV charging as it’s a fantasy to have EV in rural areas and cold climate areas. No infrastructure for supporting EV.

    My power wall 2s can't charge the heat pump and the tankless water heater due to exceeding the load capacity. I hope upcoming batteries will resolve this because I'm sunk in the summer in the winter if the grid were to go down.

    Seems like bi-directional EV charging will be problematic for the foreseeable future given the EV trucks only support OEM (Ford, GM, etc.) proprietary solutions. These systems do not appear to be compatible with existing solar electronics. For example, Ford/Sunrun said to connect existing solar panels directly to their box. That’s a non starter for an existing system or the Enphase and SolarEdge integrated systems many would like to install. Have you heard anything about the major OEMs supporting the ISO standard for bi-directional charging?

    • @charlescourtney4412
      @charlescourtney4412 19 днів тому

      I already have an EV and solar with 1:1 net metering, so there is no pressing need for a battery. I am holding off on investing in a battery system until the ISO standards for interconnectivity are finalized and approved, hopefully within the next 5 years. This will allow any system to connect with any EV provided they both meet the ISO standards for interconnectivity -- no proprietary system lock in when you go to trade in your EV for a different brand. That said, I have learned that a small supplemental home battery, perhaps 5 kWH, would be beneficial, even with a bi-directional charging system. That will allow the home electrical system to continue to function if you need to drive the EV somewhere, for example to a nearby Supercharger to replenish its battery. It is likely that major EV charging locations will get power restored in an emergency sooner than an isolated neighborhood such as the one in which I reside. The major part of your battery system is very mobile with that design. Also, since I trade cars more often than houses, my "mobile battery system" will get an upgrade every 5-10 years.

    Hi, just hoping for a little advice about getting my first solar system. I live in Scotland so the weather is very changeable normally cloudy. My annual electricity use is 8400 kilowatts per year and I’m not sure about the kilowatts system requirements, I do not have nor plan to have an EV. The system offered is 8.2Kw of panels + 18 Enphase IQ8AC inverters + 2 IQ5P batteries. The installer estimated a saving of 69% on my electric bills. Would it be advisable to increase the number of panels, batteries or both or does this seem a reasonable system for my needs.
    Many thanks, John.

    • @SolarSurge
      @SolarSurge  5 місяців тому

      Hi John. At first glance, the system design seems sound. If anything, I would increase the battery storage not the solar panels. Perhaps three or four of the Enphase batteries.

      I’m not aware of any all-in-one systems that offer a wind turbine. However, you can purchase a wind turbine kit with its own inverter that can be connected in parallel to the solar inverter, both serving the same electric meter.

      @@SolarSurge When I create a custom Q-Tron M-G2 425W panel & provide the required electrical specs from the mechanical spec sheet it shows all pair except the X (the H will have the most clipping). However the spec sheet for the IQ8M or A does show the max DC input amps is listed as 12. Q-tron listed Current @ MPP Amps as 12.98 @ STC. Another concern is the Q-Tron is listed @ 108 Cells. I do not see an inverter list higher than a 98-cell. I am an HVAC designer not an electrician/ solar guy. I am trusting a local company with high reviews.
