    Well watched this this morning. Went outside increased my poundage 64lb to 70lb. Shot 12 arrows at 70lb never did this before. Great tip.

    Apparently when they brought up the longbows from the Mary rose the draw weight was 180 pounds, absolutely true, the English archers were immensely strong,

    Starting with keeping your weight on your leading foot is a great tip, that's something my coach never mentioned. Thank you.
    But yeah, the first thing we were taught in target archery is to never draw across the chest. You tend to struggle this way and when you do the arrow has a tendency to fall off the blade rest esp in the last few inches of the draw cycle (although that isn't a problem with captive drop-away rests and whisker biscuits). Even if you get away with it, you'll only physically last 1-2 dozen arrows at the most before you over-exert and completely lose accuracy. The other is the efficiency of movement - the bow arm has to start off at eye level and it doesn't move, so that when your draw hand has completed the draw cycle it anchors immediately and all you have to do is let the dot in the scope seat itself into the 10-zone before executing the shot.

    Watching this after struggling to pull 70lbs. Honestly had no idea how to do it, was using all rear delt, as you've mentioned. I workout a lot too. Was a bummer that I could barely pull it. Thanks for the tips.

    Yeah I've messed up my delts a couple times. Elbow is key, I used to have mine low. Hands at eye level, elbow up, straight back. Used to have bow pointing up too.

    Bro I just came across your video OMG thank you so much. Ive been hunting for 4 years and Ive always used a traditional Bow at 50 pounds or a crossbow depending on how desperate for meat I am. I just bought a compound yesterday and I was struggling to pull it and have been in the gym for 1 year constantly. This all makes sense now based on how you described it and Im definitely gonna practice with it tomorrow thank you

    Great video. As a new archer that has struggled with finding a draw form that is pain free and increases the use of my back, this video is spot on. For me, my trigger is both a high elbow and low release hand. This seems to engage my lats the most and allow me to draw back pain free.

    Excellent form! I pull a 65 lb compound and 55lb recurve no problem this way and can shoot all day long. Good advice regarding forward position too. I'll give that a try!

    Very great explanation, I have learned to shoot by teaching myself and I have always pulled with my shoulder until this last fall I tore a muscle from shooting a newer heavier setup. I will be testing this draw method out, thanks for the great video

    Great advice! I have found that different muscles engage during the draw cycle and one might have to adjust depending on where the peak weight or hump is on the draw curve of your bow. Good tip on starting leaning forward and pre-tensioning the lats for early peak weight. For later peak weight, it helps to go chest proud to engage the big muscles between the scapulae. The best exercise I have found are gym ring crossed rows with back straight and parallel to the floor, pausing 2-4 seconds at the top.

    When I first started shooting bow, I was shooting instict and needed a ton of shooting throughout the summer to get my accuracy. By mid summer, I was shooting up to 3 straight hours solid without breaks. I increased my draw weight by 10-15 lbs also. That was almost 20 years ago now. Then I lived out in the country and shot whenever I wanted. Now I live in town and am not allowed to shoot inside city limits. Plus I am older, have had back issues, and injured my draw shoulder 5 years ago. I am excited to try this out and practice drawing back at home to work on the muscles to build the strength and muscle memory so when I do target shoot I'll be a step ahead.

    Very good video, Practice, Practice, and more Practice . Biggest problem people are over bowed. They cant draw proper, and create real bad habits. Starting out with a proper poundage and draw. Lots of proper practice. Practicing all spring and summer everyday. Do a deer season. Then the following spring jump up 5lbs, and start the same process over again. 5 lbs is a huge difference. When it comes too drawing a bow and releasing a arrow. With the proper form.

    wohou maan! that helps me a lot! because last week ago im looking for a Bow. i just start like the old style with only bow or crossbow (but bow is so cool) and i'm thinking of 50lbs for my first bow ever. i shoot with bow 10 years ago when i was a kid :D so i need to learn the right technique.

    ​ Yes practice, practice practice I shot a great 11 pointer last fall after shooting every day in the summer than just a couple of weeks before opening day like I used too,,So it was getting dark quick. moving deer 30 yards out of came out from nowhere and was walking in and out of cover. I had seconds to put it all together,, you brain goes into auto pilot mode and MUSCLE MEMORY kicks in. That's what the thousand of arrows I shot before helped me developed..

      If possible, would like your opinion. Just got back into archery, (PSE Evolve LT, 29.5 draw) shot all the time as a kid. First go around with wrist strap with a hook release (did not like the caliper style). Can be a smooth release, struggling with setting and holding part of the strap to maintain proper finger position on the trigger. This can create quite a bit a variable and inconsistency as I pull through the shot. Considering a handheld thumb trigger or tension style. Most of my shooting for now is target at close range, trying to get my form and technique back. Thanks again for the video.

      Mark Warman yes, that will definitely cause inconsistencies. If you are using a wrist strap, make sure it is adjustable and can be shortened down to where you have easy reach of it deep in your finger at full draw without holding on to it. The key is to not grip the release at all if using a wrist strap release. If you want to change to a handheld release, Stan releases are super good

    More importantly, shoot your bow when it's not nice out as well, shooting 70 pounds when its 75 and sunny, vs 20 degrees is a different animal. Shoot when it's cold and you're muscles are cold and you'll find your true draw weight .

    I'm still working my way up to 70 pound. Slowly get there. Currently sitting on 50 pound and I'm pretty well stuffed after 100 arrows. Brunk Outdoors, I'm going to fine tune my draw as you have demonstrated and see how i go at 60 pound. Thanks for the excellent video and cheers from Western Australia.

    Great video on the draw technique. Now I want to critique your shooting technique. Get your finger hooked around the trigger on your release and pull through the shot by bringing your draw elbow straight back and focus on using by squeezing your rhomboid muscles to make the shot go off. Trigger punching is a bad habit and can lead to target panic!

    Very well done & the timing is excellent. Practice makes perfect & proper form & practice makes the whole thing seem more natural. I would also like 2 add if more people through the summer months practiced sometimes by shooting a recurve where u aim while u r drawing back that it would make people more aware of the proper process of what muscles r involved since there r no shortcuts with 0% letoff.

      Joseph tread lightly you are totally right, Hunter has a recurve bowfishing bow and one summer he shot it a lot and noticed that it made shooting a compound bow seen way easier after he switched back!

    Great video. I already have two messed up shoulders my left one has a torn rotary cup and my right one has one of the three top muscles that go over tore, and a detached bicep and the two muscles that hold the ball into the socket got tore up. I can only do 64 on right arm with compound, and working on recuve for left arm at 60.i play all time in house when nasty outside with lefty righty recurve for motion.its just 40 lbs. I think this motion is where i was getting to, now be quicker, thanks for fantastic tip.

      @@BrunkOutdoors i believe what you said that also helps strengthen things for everyday living. I drive big box truck for living and after year playing wih bows, i can steer truck wih either arm alone now. Plus i love playing wih them. Thanks again.

    The repetitive nature of drawing a bow can't be overstated in developing the muscles used in drawing a bow, in my opinion. I was shooting one day when a friend happened to drop by and watched for a while. He asked if he could shoot and I said yes. He was able to make the draw a few times and then everything started to fall apart for him. Obviously I was able to draw so much smoother and for a much longer period of time because muscle memory, or training if you will. What surprised me was how much stronger this guy was than me (baseball player just out of college) and how I was able to draw all afternoon without having the arrow jump off of the rest like when he shot. We were both in our early 20's when this happened. Don't be afraid to get out there and shoot at a lower poundage to develop that form. Thanks for letting me share.

      Jonathan Howard exactly! Thanks for sharing! Shooting a bow is definitely a muscle movement that needs lots of repetition to master. Just like you said if stronger people don’t know how to activate the correct muscles during the movement their strength is useless
