@Alpha Gaming It really depends on the type of stream. If it’s a gaming channel, not so much... But if its a just chatting stream like yours quite often, it makes a huge difference.
Still just rocking my c922x with good lighting until it's a good investment to bump up, I do want a new camera for photography reasons - the EOS RP is what I'm going to be going with since my current Canon DSLR is now 12yrs old and has more than served it's purpose. You really simplified the setting process for those that have never used the manual seeing on a DSLR/Mirrorless. Hope you feel better man
@@anikdesai2558 i think even if its a gaming channel it leaves a good first impression, maybe just enough to hold your attention for a few extra sec to see whats going on on the stream...
Hey alpha, I’ve heard for your shutter speed you want the denominator to be as close to 2x your shutter speed. But what you said is different, is there any truth to that statement? ex. 60fps = 1/125 shutter speed (closest value) After watching though. Seems like this technique may apply to general filming, but as a webcam you don’t want sacrifice the light since there won’t be much motion
The 180° shutter rule comes from frame rates like 24/25/30 fps. It is meant to have just the perfect amount of blur to make those (stuttery) frame rates look smooth (without being too blurry). I thought, this would apply to 60fps as well. However when I tried it, I found the full 360° (1/60) looked a lot smoother and still sharp enough for the purpose of streaming. For filming wildlife or other stuff I go for much shorter shutter-times though, as I want maximum sharpness. 360° on 60fps can be annoying, if you pan around a lot. But since the cam is standing still as a stream-cam, you are the only part moving.
Iso can be compared to an audio amplifier. If you turn a powerful amp up high, you can hear noise. If you make your sensor more snsitive you can see the natural noise of the sensor more.
Lighting is so important when considering how wide you can or should open the aperture. If you don't use much light in your setup, you will have to open the aperture wide (e.g. F2.8 - F5.4) to compensate for the lack of light hitting the camera's sensor. However, you may end up with a very shallow depth of field (DOF), i.e. wiggle room. This creates great boken (background blurring) but, if you have a small amount of forward and backward movement due to a very shallow DOF you may move in and out of focus. The narrower the aperture (F11 - F22) the deeper DOF, i.e. more wiggle room. You'll have less boken but, to remain if focus is much more important than the boken effect itself. Play with your lighting so you have enough space to move freely in front of the camera without going in and out of focus. BTW, good job on explanation Harris, Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO are all connected and can be so difficult to explain and understand.
YOU ARE AN ABSOLUTE KING!!!!! I set up my camera a while ago and it looked horrible, so i just bought a webcam but then if found your video and I'm bringing it back to the store. I didn't know my camera could be this good! thank you for saving me some money
I am pretty sure you're wrong when talking about shutter speed. There's something called 180-degree rule, if you’re shooting at 30fps, then you’ll need a shutter speed of 1/60th; shoot at 60fps and your shutter speed should be 1/120th.
@@RedOneM You might want to actually test that. I did. For streaming imo 360° on 60fps looks a lot better than 180°. For filming other stuff while panning around with the camera a lot, it's a different story. 360° will be too blurry in some situations. For some things (wildlife for example) even less time than 1/120s can be good. This rule is originated from slow frame rates such as 24/25/30fps. And it doesn't apply to everything.
This is if you want to follow the Hollywood filmmaking "rules" this is all subjective... if you feel the 180 degree rule is better by all means use it... however as he explains in the video because you're usually sat down in a dark room and dont move much when streaming having a 360 degree shutter you wont really notice too much of a difference and that extra light will probably help your pucture quality more than a bit of motion blur would... All subjective though try each option out and see which looks best for you

The iso isn't a "brightness slider", it's a delicate control that weighs your sensors sensitivity to light vs how much noise you'll get. Working in manual mode is a balance of light, motion blur, focal plane and noise.
For my Sony Alpha6K streamer friends that are running into an extremely grainy look on your just chatting or full screen face cam scene. Instead of setting the camera to manual, set it to Movie mode. Within Movie mode you can select manual control over your Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO. This got rid of my grainy look at least. Give it a shot, you can always go back if needed.

Hey man. Just wanted to say your channel is massively informative. I’m currently thinking of a new company which involves a lot of streaming/video conferencing and you are a huge help with all your videos on cameras, lighting, etc. So, big thanks and keep it up.
Great video. You should consider that the skills gamers having in presenting themselves in video, are now being used by large companies in Zoom/Skype etc meetings. There is a hidden audience of sales professionals trying to learn this stuff. I wonder if a big company would pay you to consult on how to show executives how to make themselves look professional in online video meetings.

Hey I bought the a6000. I dont have a lens for it yet. But when I turn it on, the screen is all gray. Is that normal? Do I absolutely a lens for the camera to show picture?? I'm new to this lol
Amazing video!😊 I just have a question: is there an alternative for the Elgato Cam Link? In Australia they are all sold out😱. Should I go for the Hd60s then? Or any other brand? I'm not interested in gaming, just live streaming and recording. Thank you🙏
A bit late, but there are some alternatives. You can use basically any capture card but the easiest ones would be the ones that support UVC. I don't think Harris is allowed to say it in this video/comments, but a few examples of alternatives: AVerMedia LiveGamer Portable 2 Plus, AVerMedia ExtremeCap UVC, probably a few other legitimate ones and then some generic brands such as EZCap 261 The ones that don't support UVC won't be plug and play / necessarily show as a input for some apps but can be fixed with drivers or worst case scenario, a virtual cam with OBS
I have an elgatos HD60S for streaming my PS4. To use a DSLR camera would I need another capture card or can i use the same capture card for both? How would I connect?

Question re streaming with LED lights and 50hz electric. Ola! I'm over in New Zealand using 2 elgato key lights and a canon eos m200. Is there any work around for cam flicker and a higher fps? I tried a quick Google but all I could find was matching my fps to my lights/electric frequency, which means going at 25fps. Any ideas? Btw LOVE the content you put out Dan
OK in a further google I found this. Might help urbanvideo.ca/avoid-video-flicker Basically recommends that if you're shooting at 60fps on a 50hz electric, then to set the shutter speed to 1/100
Hi, my camera is canon m50 + Elgato Cam Link 4K - it overheats and turns off after 2 hours of stream. Apparently this camera is not suitable for long streams. Which camera to buy to avoid overheating?
Great video. I don't have a camera just yet (will probably wait a long time to get one), but this does help a lot even with a webcam. Some of the things you explained about the camera also apply to obs settings for my C922
im a photographer with a $3000 mirrorless camera setup. I'm looking into either buying a webcam or setting up my photography camera for discord calling, will having my camera sensor open for extended periods of time damage the sensor? would I be better off buying a dedicated webcam in the long run? I dont want to damage my camera
Hey Harris, thanks for the video, that was very enlighting. I tried to stream with the same setup (just replaced the A6000 with a A6400 and switched the 16-50mm lens to a 30mm one) but the camera systematically overheats and shut down after some time. Any ideas to fix the problem? Thx!
This was so helpful!! Thank you!! I've been using a Canon M50 with the utility software for months and it's looked *okay* but it looks so much better now!
Thanks for the info bro. I am using an old Canon 7D. I just need a close range lens. I usually rock a 70-200 Canon L series. I think having the image quality is a game changer!!
So this might be a dumb question but I game on my PS4. Can I use my DSLR to live stream from there? I already do photography, but I'm new to the twitch world.
Dumb question (i know this may be an older video but I'm trying to figure this out) So I'm building a new studio that has a Sony a6000 as a camera and behind me will have a TV and a couple neon lights (unfortunately the neon lights are bright that don't dim). When I start testing this view the neon lights and the tv is bright, what settings would be best for the camera to have so they show up clear and not washed out. Thank you
Thanks so much for this video! I was struggling with my new SL3, but the image looks much better now that I have made the adjustments mentioned in your video.
Hey Harris, I was just wondering if you could give tips on how to grow on UA-cam faster and just be able to reach more people, basically like how the algorithm works and how to use that to your advantage
So putting shutter at 120 while shooting in 1080 60. Is wrong.?? It should be 60 ?? I do notice at 100-125 I get at if the waves from other Nanoleaf lights.
I have a good camera (canon 80d)and know about videography but I can't use it because it's uses a lot of my CPU and makes my game and stream laggy. I checked about the elgato but I saw reviews that it also uses a lot of cpu. So I can't use my camera till I upgrade by pc and that's not possible for a long time
8:47 - If you prefer using manual focus, why didn't you do it for this video then? I noticed a lot of focus hunting, so you're obviously using automatic focus.
Do you know off the top of your head- does Cam Link require a quad core or more processor? Having trouble getting it to show anything on my Surface Book.
How about the battery work? if the camera connect with hdmi cable, is it no need to put battery in camera? and is it possible if camera gonna overheat when live streaming is going?
Got this a few weeks ago. Works good so far. Sad, it can't do 4K60fps though. Would be very nice for virtually lossless cropping with the GH5. Also I noticed the Cam Link getting warm in the USB-port, even when it's not used.
picked up the Sony a6100 and now its discontinued lol 😆 but just stopped by to say @harris gave me the confidence to upgrade from a webcam and simplified the process which has now pushed me to REALLY get into video graphics thank you so much!!!
I have read that the Sony A6xxx overheat with internal recording, but i even read that they still overheat not recording (using it just HDMI out), is this is still the case on long streams (6+ hours)?
Hmm, the capture card usb stick you showed must be out of stock, because what is available is the same price as the internal card, and I assume that USB3 is still slower than pcie x1. An internal card will keep my setup cleaner also, but they are $190 now :/ Just for the HD60 Pro, I dont care about 4k and that costs a lot more also

YES!! This is what I was looking for, just bought a A6000 and couldnt find settings to use for streaming, well done!
Hey I bought the a6000. I dont have a lens for it yet. But when I turn it on, the screen is all gray. Is that normal? Do I absolutely a lens for the camera to show picture?? I'm new to this lol
@@OneMoreLvlOfficial yes.
What about camera placement?
Can canon 60d be used with cam link ?
Does the elgato cam link really necessary?
Amazing video!😊 I just have a question: is there an alternative for the Elgato Cam Link? In Australia they are all sold out😱. Should I go for the Hd60s then? Or any other brand? I'm not interested in gaming, just live streaming and recording. Thank you🙏
A bit late, but there are some alternatives. You can use basically any capture card but the easiest ones would be the ones that support UVC.
I don't think Harris is allowed to say it in this video/comments, but a few examples of alternatives: AVerMedia LiveGamer Portable 2 Plus, AVerMedia ExtremeCap UVC, probably a few other legitimate ones and then some generic brands such as EZCap 261
The ones that don't support UVC won't be plug and play / necessarily show as a input for some apps but can be fixed with drivers or worst case scenario, a virtual cam with OBS
I'd love to use my DSLR for streaming, but it's just so big and hard to fit into my setup lol.
I have an elgatos HD60S for streaming my PS4. To use a DSLR camera would I need another capture card or can i use the same capture card for both? How would I connect?
This was very helpful - thank you. Looking forward to my next stream.
how to you prevent the 30min auto shutoff for sony A6100? id like to use that for streaming.
AJ CoRe TV A dummy battery bud! :D
Just ordered one for my a6000
What dummy battery do use for the A6100?
@@CastleTv_ I have a dummy battery, I also realized what I was doing wrong that caused camera to keep shutting off LOL i'll be posting a video tmrw on my channel, plz subscribe! I'm new at this, but off to a good start.. you be the judge! thx
Great video! 🤜
How’d you manage to get around the 30 minute auto off timer?
Question re streaming with LED lights and 50hz electric.
Ola! I'm over in New Zealand using 2 elgato key lights and a canon eos m200.
Is there any work around for cam flicker and a higher fps?
I tried a quick Google but all I could find was matching my fps to my lights/electric frequency, which means going at 25fps.
Any ideas?
Btw LOVE the content you put out
Dan
OK in a further google I found this.
Might help
urbanvideo.ca/avoid-video-flicker
Basically recommends that if you're shooting at 60fps on a 50hz electric, then to set the shutter speed to 1/100
Hi, my camera is canon m50 + Elgato Cam Link 4K - it overheats and turns off after 2 hours of stream. Apparently this camera is not suitable for long streams. Which camera to buy to avoid overheating?
If youre on a budget check out a5100 with kit lens or if you want blurred background go for a lens like 16mm 1.4 though is pricey lens
Great video. I don't have a camera just yet (will probably wait a long time to get one), but this does help a lot even with a webcam. Some of the things you explained about the camera also apply to obs settings for my C922
Thank you so much for the settings. No one else covered these!!!
I honestly can't wait to purchase a professional camera for my streams. Thank you!
im a photographer with a $3000 mirrorless camera setup. I'm looking into either buying a webcam or setting up my photography camera for discord calling, will having my camera sensor open for extended periods of time damage the sensor? would I be better off buying a dedicated webcam in the long run? I dont want to damage my camera
may i know what is the lens that you used in this video?
Hey Harris, thanks for the video, that was very enlighting. I tried to stream with the same setup (just replaced the A6000 with a A6400 and switched the 16-50mm lens to a 30mm one) but the camera systematically overheats and shut down after some time. Any ideas to fix the problem? Thx!
You ever figured out the issue?
Trade it in and get a Canon
I just got a Sony A6000 and there seems to be quite a bit of noise no matter what I do. Can you please do a best settings for this camera :)
24fps recording, with a 1/50 shutter, f2.8, ISO on 100-400 depending on light. That should help ya!
@@ProceraHealth even for live streaming? You wouldn't want it at 60fps w/ 1/60?
@@MuffinStuffer the shutter should always be double the Framerate. Its an old Videographer rule.
@@1FlynnGaming ok thank you
Thank you for the VERY useful info, keep up the good work buddy!
As always awesome video. Looking at getting the Sony Camera. Logi i have is ok but there is no adjustments for it.
Hi. Do I need to have a memory card in the camera to use it for stream? Thx
This was so helpful!! Thank you!! I've been using a Canon M50 with the utility software for months and it's looked *okay* but it looks so much better now!
hello and when you set this up , i have the sony a6000 , do you also need a sandisk in the camera? thank you
nope. using an a6100
you have helped me tremendously! BIG THANKS!
Dumb question (i know this may be an older video but I'm trying to figure this out)
So I'm building a new studio that has a Sony a6000 as a camera and behind me will have a TV and a couple neon lights (unfortunately the neon lights are bright that don't dim). When I start testing this view the neon lights and the tv is bright, what settings would be best for the camera to have so they show up clear and not washed out.
Thank you
should i get a capture card or game link to stream and record?
Thanks so much for this video! I was struggling with my new SL3, but the image looks much better now that I have made the adjustments mentioned in your video.
I love my SL3 because of this video. Just trying to figure out which iso is best now
So I already have a Canon Powershot sx530 hs and was wondering if I can use it? I have the elgato HD60 S+.
Man your videos are awesome
So I can't use my camera till I upgrade by pc and that's not possible for a long time
Have u at least tried it? U gotta do that at least b4 u say it won't work. Specs are guidelines for consumers.not absolute truths.try it out
8:47 - If you prefer using manual focus, why didn't you do it for this video then? I noticed a lot of focus hunting, so you're obviously using automatic focus.
I've been using a Sony A6400 and just using a DSLR has been a great way for me to learn Soo much more about videography. Great vid!
Me the same, I have a Sony A6400 and I'm learning videography ;)
Hahahahaha, the USB-the-wrong-way mini-skit.
thats what she said ;DDDDDDDDDD
Do you know off the top of your head- does Cam Link require a quad core or more processor? Having trouble getting it to show anything on my Surface Book.
If you use a green screen, do you not need to mess with the aperture? I am setting up my Canon m50!
How about the battery work? if the camera connect with hdmi cable, is it no need to put battery in camera?
and is it possible if camera gonna overheat when live streaming is going?
Can you do a Sony version please
Got this a few weeks ago. Works good so far.
Sad, it can't do 4K60fps though. Would be very nice for virtually lossless cropping with the GH5.
Also I noticed the Cam Link getting warm in the USB-port, even when it's not used.
Have you considered the issue of Sony Cameras going to ''stand by'' mode?
This really didn’t help me. I still don’t know how get the canon m50 to stay on longer than a few minutes
picked up the Sony a6100 and now its discontinued lol 😆 but just stopped by to say @harris gave me the confidence to upgrade from a webcam and simplified the process which has now pushed me to REALLY get into video graphics thank you so much!!!
An internal card will keep my setup cleaner also, but they are $190 now :/
Just for the HD60 Pro, I dont care about 4k and that costs a lot more also
can you use ANY camera with mini hdmi to use the elgato cam link
