My dad built a camp in Northern Vermont in 1971. We have used single wall simple stove pipe, and have never had a problem. All the crap codes do not apply to a cabin which has no insurance, and experiences a maximum of two weeks of burn time a year. Before all this expensive insulated chimney stuff was invented, the old timers used plain stove pipe for chimney. Burn dry wood, and keep you stove pipe swept clean, and you will be fine.

there are good reasons for building codes and stiff penalties for violating them if anyone is harmed due to a violation. Insurance can't protect anyone. Improvements in codes are for those who don't know to burn dry wood or keep their chimneys clean.

@@johnzarollin2749 In most situations, yes. But in my case, I essentially have a wooden box in the woods (i.e. a camp), miles from facilities/public service. Common sense apparently is not common. Chimneys get dirty. They need cleaning. Now in the 53rd year at camp, and no problems.

It should last a long time… if you can see any rust or corrosion maybe where water leaks in. Who knows really depends

question, I have an all reinforced poured concrete constructed building (not cinder block, no wood or other combustible material what so ever) with 18"x18" wide enclosed concrete chimney 86". Do I still need class A chimney pipe or can i just continue with single wall stove pipe?

I have a wall thimble for a non combustible wall that looks to be 7" inner diameter. What can I use to pass through the thimble that is 7" and connect to the 6" single wall stove pipe?

Is mobile home installations any different?

No, Mobile home Chimney installation is the same except for you may require an outside combustion air kit through the floor.

Can you paint the chimney pipe stainless steel black with high temperature paint? I'm going to install a wood stove where that pipe is going all the wall to the roof, and it won't match my black downspouts.

we are converting from wood stove to a pellet stove ,and can we use the old chimney and run piping up the middle of the chimney, even if the hole is 7/8 inches

    • @mrEnergy511

That is not a problem to run pellet vent inside class A Chimney pipe... I don't much care for pellet stoves because they require electricity to use... I would recommend keeping the old wood stove just incase you lose power. Remember what happened in Texas!

Is there a difference between coal and wood stove inside pipe? My pipe is only lasting 2 seasons using our coal stove. Great video TY

There is not a difference between coal and wood stove pipe. However, there is a big difference between single wall stove pipe and double wall stove pipe. My guess is that you had single wall pipe. Double wall pipe is more durable, will last longer and give you closer clearances to the wall.

The NFPA calls for an 18" clearance to combustible walls for the single wall stove pipe. Double-wall stovepipe is used when you don't have 18" or more clearance from combustibles. Most of the double wall stove pipe allows for 6" clearance from wall combustibles and 8" from ceiling combustibles.

Can you go from single wall to double wall without an adapter? I am trying to go from 4” single wall to either 4” or 6” double wall. Can the single wall pipe be attached to the chimney pipe? This is being installed in an off grid dry hunting cabin.

I would be extremely carful when trying to connect Chimney Pipe to Black Stove Pipe. It depends on the brand and how the connectors fit together. You could crimp the single wall Pipe and insert the smaller crimped Pipe into the Chimney Pipe. Make sure that connection is a good 1.5 to 2" slip into the Chimney Pipe, and make sure you will have a minimum 12" clearance away from anything combustible FROM THE CONNECTION AND SINGLE WALL. The answer is BE SAFE!!! If at all possible give your pipe MORE than the minimum clearance. Thanks for the good Question
