To anyone who disagrees, this is exactly the technique that Ivy League rowers do when they are training inside, it’s how we perfect our technique and reduce back injuries. Feet out is the best way to erg. Solid video.
Thanks man, I appreciate. I come from the college club rowing scene (didn't row in high school)... I admire the dedication and work ethic of the Ivy League teams. Good luck this spring!
I row every day 30 mins about 4700 to 5300 meters depending on how hard I row. I'm going to start doing this technique. I'm sure it will kick my ass. I'll report back.
100% agreed. I was a D1 rower at St. Joe’s University in Philly and we would do entire pieces on the Erg with feet out. It focuses on the proper leg drive and prevents you from rushing the slide on the recovery. Keep up the great work with these instructional videos.
7:41 EST. I’m 75 and started rowing (2) months ago. I found your instructional videos a few weeks ago and find extremely helpful. I row every other day for (30-40) minutes and alternate on the stationary bike every other day (5-6) days a week. Once a week I do them both back to back. Anyway your videos are great both informative and instructional. What I need to improve my time rowing. Thanks!
Holy smokes! I didn't even realize that I wasn't engaging my core. Apparently, I've been keeping my back mostly vertical. I tried going past vertical today, and it's like a whole new workout. Thanks, man! 👍
I tried this today for the first time, and experienced an immediate improvement in stroke power. Combined with the forced slower SPM necessary to keep my feet in the feet rests, and I added another 100 meters to my 30min rowing distance. I'm rowing this way from now on. Thank you for the great info.
This was a GAME CHANGER for me, thank you! As a newbie rower I started out rowing vertically, then attempted to learn proper form but think I overcompensated and went too far back on my row, which would lead to my lats feeling like they were on fire. I couldn’t go more than 15 minutes straight and it was a miserable experience. Took my feet out and voila I can’t go too far back or my feet will come off. Did a whole workout without pain and have the best core burn afterwards 🎉
Great Vid..I have been rowing for years on the concept 2 and NEVER thought of not using the straps. Always thought the straps were for safety and for help with the last 500 meters BURN. Now, because of your info I warm up 2 min without being strapped in..wow..what a difference and a great way to check the correct technique..Thanks and thanks again because now my wife loves watching you and she now rows.
Great tip....Rowing is a great exercise; It incorporates 80% of the total musculature of the body in it's motion. Never thought of releasing the confines of the foot strap.
I almost got rid of my row machine because my hip kept hurting, I almost gave up on rowing all together, this seems to be working thus far ...this is gold! Thanks!
Yep, in my 2nd year of rowing my coach said me "people who use the correct technique can row on the machine without the straps". Tried it and nearly knocked my head on the floor. Tried again in my 6th year and I could do a maximal 500m at 32 strokes/min without them. Still have to work a lot on technique though 😢 lots of coaches here say that you need 15 full years of rowing to perfect your technique. I'm starting to believe it.
Even the Olympians need to work on technique :) That is still super awesome though, Pietro! Keep up the great work. Practice, practice, and you guessed it, more practice!
Rowing completely changed my body, helped correct pain all over my body, got me ripped and I am the most cardiovascularly fit I’ve ever been. I “race” on the rower to 200 calories which usually takes 15 minutes. Then I walk on an incline for another 200 calories, then I do some light supplemental lifting. It works the best for me.
Omg what a great tip! Thank you so much. Every time I row I don’t feel like it’s working out anything, but after doing it they way you suggested and I could totally feel my core working! Which is exactly what this moms body needs.
Especially like this video and the fact that you can do the feet out in your warmup. I’ve been rowing for fat burning for about 5 years now and it’s the fountain of youth for me at 63 years old. I do it 4 times a week for 30 mins and do it a couple of hours before the gym.
This is exactly how I was trained in college as a competitor and your motion and posture are spot on. I still row the same way you do up to this day. My six pack never left me since college 10 years ago.
really his postures are spot on ? , what will you say about his rowing component when the handle is closest to his body, he seems to be doing an "upright row" at 2:50 ,instead of pulling back and down... look he seem to be pulling up to his chest. he might be right about core component.
Thanks for the form lesson. I tried it out, much slower until I get better at it, but I can feel a significant difference in the core and lats. I am doings legs, arms and then core to pull the rowing handle back and under my chin. My abdominal muscles are now so much more involved and I realize that the (broken up) session of 500 or 1100 strokes will now be diminished but much more effective for my core and other muscles. I simply took the straps off and had no problem. Thanks
Gotta show more love w options of rowing... I work abs by turning handle vertical and pull on the side of my rib cage L & R sets of 20.. also sets of the 10 doing curls, lastly I lower tension & work shoulders sets of ten from starting chest level arms locked straight an d ending w arms straight ending near my forehead. Many dynamic options pep..
Hello got a machine in December, been using it ever since, started out doing tension 2 doing 25 rows, now upto tension 5 out of 8 upto 50 to 100 rows in a day. Have been following along, and love the results. Thanks
Thanks so much for this! Glad I "Googled" rowing because I just finished my first gym session and heard rowing was a good full body workout. I did it for 15 minutes and felt it along with blistering hands...I also learned now from several videos I *may* have been doing it slightly wrong. Thanks for the instruction. I'd prefer to get a good workout with correct form than look like a doofus and get nothing out of it.
But of course, any fitness plan / workout routine NEEDS to be supplemented with proper nutrition and quality eating habits if you are EVER going to see ab definition.
Newbie rower here and absolutely loving and appreciate your videos! I've been spending the last few sessions working and focusing on proper form.its a mental workout as well! It will probably take me a few weeks to perfect it
I do rowing and my coach made us do this and I had to be in the bow that day I almost fell out. The wind picked up when we were going back in and it became very wavy and we had to concentrate a lot which really helped.
This video may be years old but having just discovered it I have included this technique in my work outs as a 5 minute warmup and 5 minute cool down and it has made a noticeable impact.👍
Thank you! I remember this drill. Just getting back into fitness and used to love rowing back in the day. As a key part of my regime with swimming, running and cycling. An oldie now, I am going to set about my targets of a decade ago - weight, core strength and stamina. Could do 2K in 6m 30 at my peak 25 years ago. First time for a long time, did 1K in 5m today and it hurt. Just want to thank you for the inspiration. Back to it for next 3 days and then a rest and repeat!
18 million meters under my belt on my C2 model C and never thought of this. Now my 500m warmups are feet out. Then 10k’s feet in. Thanks for the great tip!
I tried the rowing machine for the first time in my life today, and I already love it. That's a great video! I'll try rowing with my feet outside the straps to see how my core gets engaged, next time.
Thank you for this information. I started rowing about 2 months ago and my posture has really improved. I’m excited to use this new tip to engage my core more.
Hello people. I am a new subscriber to this channel. I find it super helpful and will be purchasing the concept 2 by early March. I have never rowed a stroke in my life. I have so many questions, but I will keep watching so hopefully they will eventually get answered.
Thank you this is very helpful today was my second day on the machine and I'm going to take the insights from your videos to better my technique I have a super under developed core and slight bend in my lower spine and I'm excited to incorporate this machine along with yoga to reach my ultimate goal of... Doing a cartwheel 😆. ✌🏽✌🏽✌🏽
Firstly thanks for your rowing vids, I have found them very interesting and informative. I started indoor rowing some 20months ago as part of my rehab from a triple heart by-pass op - the rowing machine was something I always avoided when I was a gym bunny in my 40's far too much effort needed. But now it has become my best friend due to what you get out of it against the time and effort spent on it. I have progressed from 5 mins 1000mts and being shot to a 3k Mon - 4k Tues & a 5k Fri at a pace of 500mts / 2.30mins which I don't think is bad for an unfit 59yr old with a scarred left side heart in about 5-6months. I have just had my technique looked at today by the gym instructor who is NO rowing expert btw and my form is not bad but sounds like I do the almost vertical row - think I pivot maybe 11.55 to 12.55. I am going to try the feet out tmoz when I go for my 5k Friday ignoring my pace time but working on the technique for the duration and see if I can feel anything in my core - wish me luck lol, I am also using your lowering the foot position tip due too belly fat gut and the dip thing with the handle.
2 hours of rowing, at the highest setting 6x a week = equals major slimness. I feel like even an hour 5x a week would show gains very quickly. I'm going on a cruise in a week, (and, I'm trying to look great for all the pics 😉) and I've been doing 45 reps on the circuit. Super setting, where possible, with 3 minutes of rowing in between each set....I've already lost 6 pounds in 2 days!!!! Not gonna lie I'm very, very sore, however you can't argue with results.
That will definitely show gains quickly! I suggest you keep up with your consistent routine even after your cruise! Could you imagine doing that for 6 months?? You wouldn't even recognize yourself! :)
Glad I found this channel! New rower here, and really want to get the most out of my time on it. Although I'm a shortie, so I will have to be careful not to shoot myself off of the seat thinking I can go as far back as you can lol. Thanks for the tip!
Haha yes don't shoot off of the seat! It is an experience that I wouldn't wish upon my greatest enemy ;) Thanks for the support!! Keep up the great work and let me know how things go :)
Awesome Idle King!! I have an eBook coming out in a few weeks that is a beginner's guide to rowing and fat loss! Be on the lookout for it! Thanks for your support!
At first, I was annoyed that the straps on my machine are poor quality and won't stay tight for more than a couple of strokes. Then I started to realize that this maybe isn't a bad thing. Now I know why. Thanks for your coaching.
Thank you for your videos. I rowed crew amateur-level on the Charles near Boston prepandemic. One of the best sports ever. Great workout, and can’t beat the camaraderie of teammates.
Very happy that I found this video. My back muscles has got much stronger than my abs (due to C2 rowing and deadlifting). This caused back pain (even when not rowing) and I could not fix it with different abs training. But after I started rowing unstrapped, the problems seem to be gone. I also seem to get faster rowing times (E.g. 30min rowing). I don't get so exhausted and are also able to hold a higher pace than before. My rowing technique has not changed that much, but maybe better coordination between leg drive and body swing. Not sure. Thx for the video.
nice video but if you move the foot plates for each foot down one or two clicks you will find its easier to row and get length as well as to lock your core when you rock over
Wow. I wish I'd watched this before going to the gym today. Thank you for all the great tips. I'll definitely start rowing with my feet out when I go back in two days.
Thanks so much for this tutorial I went on the rowing machine for the first time today and was wondering why i wasn't feeling it in my core Thanks to you Now i know and knowing is half the battle
I absolutely love your videos. At last a NO WAFFLE channel. Funny at times and most importantly full of advice on perfecting technique to reduce injury and get the most out of our time rowing...results results results 😉 love it. Thank you so much.
I row on the rowing machine every day in my local gym. I've lost a lot of weight by doing so. It's hard work but worth it. I'm concentrating on burning calories at the moment and not weight lifting i will add that to my daily routine once I have a flat stomach and six pack.
This is pretty awesome. He's basically saying we can use this machine partially like one would with a free weight. Which as a byproduct would trigger more muscle activation particularly in the core.
I ve rowed before on the concept 2. Now realise I ve got a terrible technique . I will certainly focus more now that I ve seen your videos- excellent and thanks
im using a hydro i bought a few months ago, the workouts are getting more challenging but i want to make sure im using it the right way, i just try to imitate the coach on the screen
Holy shit, just saiyan, 😂 I am not a competitive rower, cycle or anything like that. I am very self taught and self motivated but I have achieved a daily goal of 20 miles in an hour on a cycle followed directly by 12000 m in an hr on the row machine......well I watched this video last night and tried my feet out today (never actually falling over but came VERY close in the middle of Crunch several times) and was only able to achieve 1500 m in 15 minutes before I was absolutely gassed. Purely amazed. THE BEST CORE WORKOUT I PERSONALLY HAVE EVER HAD!!!! Thank You
@@trainingtall if I may ask, do you have a suggestion on any other tutorial videos that I can watch to add another element into my workout once I get used to this technique?
I shall be taking this to my rower ! Thanks for the tip! I'm trying to improve my fitness for mountain biking without overriding, and ending up with cyclists stick arms ! And monster legs🤘🇬🇧
Hey man, it's a good video. Thanks for it. Help me a lot... I've just started work out with rowing machine 2 months ago. So this video helped me a very lot. Thx. :)
Thanks for all of the rowing content. This will probably take my rowing workouts to the next level. I started my rowing journey 20 days ago, and even though I was pretty heavy when I started, I am already starting to see my abs.(fasting + 1500 calories made up mostly of protein+fat as well). I think I am currently losing approximately half a pound per day, or 3.5 pounds per week. Not only that, but I am clearly building muscles all over my body.(legs, arms, back, abs, and throwing in some pushups for good measure) My shoulders actually feel stiff from all of the new muscle that I am building.
Awesome video im just starting out st the gym and was looking for a good tutorial on how to use the rower for core workouts. Helped heaps. Nice bod btw 😉
Been rowing pretty much every day since I started exercising again, and i love it. Thanks again for the "sit on junk" tip to eliminate lower back pain. Yesterday I hopped on a different rowing machine, and I guess the new one was "looser" (less resistance) despite the same setting, so I was flying. I walked out of that gym with my hip flexors shot. Surprisingly, not my abs though. The right hip flexor is so sore that I can literally feel where the muscle attaches to my spine. I noticed that I was relying on the straps though to bring myself back up more than normal (probably because I'd end up flying out of the machine otherwise). I wonder if using the strap to pull my upper body back up activates the hip flexors more than abs?? I'm not complaining though-- I think I need stronger hip flexors for my lower back anyways. Thanks again for your awesome channel!
Hey! Thanks for the comment, and the kind words too! Yes, using the footstraps to pull your upper body forward is absolutely the reason why your hip flexors are feeling the way that they are! While strong hip flexors are important, the rowing machine is definitely not the place to strengthen them!
I'm a regular viewer of Training Tall. Your videos have helped me considerably with my erg training. I assume that you're a rower as well. Do you ever hit the water, and if so, is there a chance that you'll share some of your techniques?
Hey Steve! Thanks man... I really appreciate it! Yes, I rowed in college for all 4 years. Funny thing is, i think my rowing form has improved a lot since being OUT of school and starting UA-cam. Would love to get back on the water soon...
Very pleased to announce the release of my new eBook, 'Row Your Fat Off!'.
@@trainingtall subbed and shared!
Just bought a rower. Your videos are helping me start out with the correct form. 😎
Awesome Idle King!! I have an eBook coming out in a few weeks that is a beginner's guide to rowing and fat loss! Be on the lookout for it! Thanks for your support!
Training Tall - I’ll definitely be on the look out for that. Thank you
At first, I was annoyed that the straps on my machine are poor quality and won't stay tight for more than a couple of strokes. Then I started to realize that this maybe isn't a bad thing. Now I know why. Thanks for your coaching.
When you unstrapped the feet I knew this was legit and I will die trying, thanks for the vid
Thank you, Demme! Let me know how things go!
Cheers mate, just hit holidays and doing a lot of training, and this will definitely be in my schedule throughout
Interesting. I never had thought of that. Will try it.
Hope it works well for you, Robert!
Not sure. Thx for the video.
covered the very problem I was having on the water yesterday love this
Thanks, Chris! Glad this worked for you!
nice video but if you move the foot plates for each foot down one or two clicks you will find its easier to row and get length as well as to lock your core when you rock over
Wow. I wish I'd watched this before going to the gym today. Thank you for all the great tips. I'll definitely start rowing with my feet out when I go back in two days.
Finally recovered from my Acl and will be taken up rowing as of tomorrow as part of my gym workout. Thanks for the info brother.
Glad you find the info helpful, Chris! Keep up the good work, man!
Thanks so much for this tutorial
I went on the rowing machine for the first time today and was wondering why i wasn't feeling it in my core
Thanks to you
Now i know and knowing is half the battle
I absolutely love your videos. At last a NO WAFFLE channel. Funny at times and most importantly full of advice on perfecting technique to reduce injury and get the most out of our time rowing...results results results 😉 love it. Thank you so much.
I row on the rowing machine every day in my local gym. I've lost a lot of weight by doing so. It's hard work but worth it. I'm concentrating on burning calories at the moment and not weight lifting i will add that to my daily routine once I have a flat stomach and six pack.
I love rowing, always my go to exercise. 🙌🏼
It is GREAT exercise!
Thank you for info. I can't wait to try today in the gym. Never thought we can do rowing without strips...it's new and sounds effective info. Thanks 😁
This DOES really make a difference, I hadn't noticed, thank you!
Glad you liked it!!
This is pretty awesome. He's basically saying we can use this machine partially like one would with a free weight. Which as a byproduct would trigger more muscle activation particularly in the core.
Glad you liked the vid!
Didn’t know Jay of Jay and Silent Bob had his own fitness channel. Seriously though this was helpful. Thanks
Hahaha thanks, Damon!
I was hoping not to see any other Jason mews comments.....I wanted to be the guy with the funny insight
Love the directness...no bs: just great instruction!
I ve rowed before on the concept 2. Now realise I ve got a terrible technique . I will certainly focus more now that I ve seen your videos- excellent and thanks
Awesome, Julie! I hope you are able to improve your rowing! Let me know how things go :)
Trying this in the morning. Love the rowing machine.
This is very helpful! I'm gonna try this tomorrow during my workout.
These rowing videos have been so helpful. Thanks so much! Also subscribed! 💜
I'm so glad you like the videos! Thanks, Lise! :)
Was halfway through rowing when watching this. I changed up immediately for the last two sets and damn I felt a difference immediately 😅
I've even worn out the OEM foot straps, lmao. Trying this today, great video.
Thanks a lot! Hope this helps!
I'm whooped after a pretty intense row, but when I get back on tomorrow, I'm trying this out. Thanks for the tip!
im using a hydro i bought a few months ago, the workouts are getting more challenging but i want to make sure im using it the right way, i just try to imitate the coach on the screen
Thank You
Haha that is awesome, BEAR! Glad this could do the trick and really challenge your athleticism!
Even though monster legs are badass, I know what you mean! I hope this works out well for you. Let me know how things go!
Training Tall “actually will”
Daaaamn! I just got a rowing machine and I’m so thankful for your videos! So informative, so useful. Thank you!
I’m definitely trying this. I have a rower at home. Thank you!
Just started rowing 2 days ago and I didn’t realise that I could go back I thought you had to have a straight back lol thanks for the advice
Glad this could help you out, Kerrie! And thanks for the compliment :)
Nice man thanks, i will try that, im kinda getting back on that machine after many years and want to get back my form 👌
You got it, man! Just start one day at a time!
You got it, man! Just start one day at a time!
I actually have abs, deep in the cave called "fat"
Keep workin' man and they'll find a way out of the cave eventually!
🤣
Thank you so much! I've improved a lot since I watched your video and followed your advice! ❤️
My concept 2 will be here Wednesday I'm so stoked
I'm a beginner and these videos are so helpful!
Glad it could help :)
Thank you for talking about key point for core activation! Great video.
Totally! Thanks for watching, Courtney!
My first of your intermediate workouts!! AWESOME!! 😎😎😎
This was a helpful tip, never thought to try this
Looking forward to trying this and not falling off!
I rowed today. I have lots of respect for those who row. I was worn out. I was out of shape
Rowing is one of the most challenging exercises out there!
@@trainingtall I agree with you. I like it a lot. My legs and butt were on fire. I thought I was gonna set off the smoke alarm
Excellent advice 👌
you remind me of Jim Carry, nice vid. I'm gonna start rowing strapless.
Haha thank you! I get that all the time!
Yay for strapless, lol
Thanks, the idea of not using the foot straps really has worked well.
I'm glad it has worked well for you, David!
Great tip. I'll definitely work this into my rowing. Thanks!
Awesome! Thanks for watching, Mike!
