These are great suggestions! I live in Maine, which has better weather than New York, but it still gets pretty cold. Layers are my best friend during the winter. Wool socks, extra blankets and slippers are a must. Sometimes I go to places that are are warm to save a bit of money in the winter...the library, my in-laws house, and walk around the mall. I love cuddle dudds and other thermals. My husband and son don't even need thermals, unless they are outside for hours. Thank you for sharing these tips.
Anything that has to be charged I try to charge while I’m running errand in my car. I figure the car is running so it might as well charge my phone, rechargeable lantern, etc. also I use my solar lamps often at night to reduce need for an electric lamp:)
Flannel sheets have been my go to for years, my mom always swore by them in the winter too. I recently learned about Snoozies for my feet, they are awesome. Keep feet warm without sweating. Several years ago I bought a fleece cape/wrap that was intended for outside use and I never used it. Then I realized--wear it indoors stupid! It's great when I'm in my recliner, it leaves my hands free for holding a book, working on my laptop, etc. Over the past three years we invested into two mini split/heat pump style heater/ac units and I was blown away at how well they worked for keeping things warm (and cool)without significantly increasing our electric bill and decreasing our gas bill since our furnace doesn't need to run as much. They aren't cheap initially but I do think once we've had them a few years, they will pay for themselves.
My mother never turned on the heater unless it was a very cold night. If we complained about being cold she would A) tell us to do a chore because physical activity makes you warmer (also gets jobs done that didn't like, as well as stopping future complaining. Lol). B) tell us to put on a pair jeans, socks, sweater and/or gloves. Or C) grab a book and cuddle under the blankets in bed. That last was my favorite, and I'm a better reader for it.
We are ages 78 and almost 80. Our daughters gave us electric blankets and we love them. We are like you..we turn it on to start, but turn it off later. I can't stand to be too warm either. We have twin beds side by side because we sleep so differently.😊We turn the thermostat down when we go to bed, too. We live in Michigan.
I'm always cold too, but I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism a couple years ago, so then I wondered if that was part of the problem. But we also live in the Midwest where some winters can get brutal. I got myself on old fashioned oil (but sealed) electric radiator several years ago to add some warmth to my bedroom. It doesn't seem to use too much electricity, and it seems safer then so many modern portable heaters with open grills. I'm also a big fan of hoodies. I get the thicker, fluffy ones for the winter I wear around the apt. But I'm always looking for other tips to stay warm. Appreciate the extra ideas, thank you!
Fleece sheets are wonderful. I have 2 sets of them. And I have a light weight fleece blanket that I found yrs ago at a Bed, Bath & Beyond store. I love them all. 😃
I have a magic bag ,,filled with some kinda material that can be heated or frozen,,,I heat it in the microwave and put in the bed,,I also use a heating pad on bed while I heat up the magic bag ,,,sooooo nice ,I also found a cotton fleece flat sheet and pillow cases at thrift store, used the pillow cases to make burp pads as a gift ,,and used the flat sheet on bed,so warm ,,it was a double size but fit my queen bed nicely ,,I also buy basic tank tops at Walmart and wear under my sweat top around the house,, Great video packed full of great ideas😃😃
We added fleece lined drapes to the living room/dining room and bedroom - what a difference. It's like a blanket on your window. Also a tip for those with skylights that have a tall tunnel - I bought clear med weight vinyl - sewed pockets to each short end, put a small tension rod through - you can hardly tell but no more drafts and the heat isn't going up the skylight tunnel.
I live in U.K., came back from a holiday in the warmer part of USA last Saturday. Heated the house using the app before flying. The heating stopped working the next day. The water heats fortunately. It is now five days without heating, a part needs replacing. I am 76, to avoid feeling cold, I keep the doors and curtains closed 24/7, unless it is sunny. Areas without carpet are covered with old bedsheets. I have three hot meals, and drink hot drinks. I wrap up well in layers. I don’t feel cold at all.
A fleece vest is a great way to add warmth without adding bulk. Make a rice sock to heat up your bed. If you have south facing windows, make sure you open the curtains during peak sunlight hours. It could heat up your whole house.
We had an energy audit done last December. We found out our insulation in the attic was only 6” deep , had it brought up to 14”;our ductwork above our master suite ( separate furnace) had 3 holes about 5” wide in it, had those closed up. We have really drafty windows so I keep window film kits on all windows year round ( allergies too),during the coldest temperatures I put the large bubble wrap over the top of the plastic film half way up my LR & DR picture windows, block out air at bottom of the entry doors , if really freezing temps I use painters tape around doors we’re not using, use darker colors of curtains and lampshades and use heavy weight curtains over the fall color sheers in the evenings and nights. The darker colors help us feel cozier. We run a humidifier all winter , keeping the air moist helps us feel warmer. We use an oil radiator space heater in the LR when we’re watching TV in evenings and wrap up in our throws. We have been very happy with the savings on our electric bills , winter and Summer. 7:19
We live in Canada. It's-30 C or colder in December, January and February and sometimes even a few days in the adjoining months. If the temperatures go too low in the winter the pipes freeze and then there's big problems. We can turn down the temperatures a bit especially at night for sleeping. Some of your other tips are good.
I had to chuckle when you said you're really cold there. I'm a Prairie girl in Canada so we have to go a couple steps farther but these are great tips for everything but a real freeze
@@saraconklinfrozenpennies hibernation is key when it's - 50. And good quality outerwear. But for inside we just cook and Have blankets and turn the heat up 🤣
I’m a Canadian prairie girl as well…the heat bags and blankets while trying to keep the heat to a realistic minimum on those -40 and -50 days!! But I know coastal temps can be heavier with that wet cold…may hit a bit differently than our dry frostbite and windchill factors here. But it’s just all darn cold!! 😃
I'm just the opposite. I'm relieved when the temperature drop and I can cool down. I become anxious when things start getting hot. After all, you can only take off so many clothes. LOL.
I use flannel sheets on my bed, and two blankets. When it’s so cold, I use my tightly knitted afghans as well. This year I got idea of using draft blockers for the windows, unfortunately can’t find ones that are window sized and so I will make them. I do plan to get some thermal insulation curtains in a few weeks.
A couple things I do: I delay as much of my canning and dehydrating as I can until heating season starts. I hate running my canner in August with the windows open to let the heat out when I know in a couple more months I’ll want that heat. I also run a humidifier in my bedroom at night. Humid air simply feels warmer, plus it’s good for preventing colds and coughs.
Very timely video! Here in the PNW our winters are milder than in NY state but all of these tips are applicable. The key for me is weatherproofing my windows & doors and being sure to layer clothing and bedding. A snuggly cat is also a good addition!
I fill in my bay window with paperbacked R19 insulation. It does make the room a little bit darker but I still have a different window for illumination.. That side window I can either fill with bubble wrap or a large piece of stereo foam that lets in translucent light.
Could you suggest good electric blankets? Put links to money saving products in the description? I don't have heated mattress pads or rugs or anything! Suggestion for window insulation kits?
I don’t know how it works where you are, but in UK they can definitely tell what time energy is being used. And if you have a smart meter you can even see it yourself and literally see how much you’ve used in a specific hour or how much you’re using right now. You have to be a bit careful with those off peak energy tariffs though because it normally means your day time rate will be much higher, and if you’re using normal heaters and any high energy item in the day time, that can quickly get expensive. There are specific “storage heaters” which are normally used for these tariffs so they turn on at night, then last all day.
It’s just me, my husband and our adult son living here. If it’s above 45 outside, we use no heat inside. It will be 60-66 inside by the next morning but that’s fine. It’s better to sleep in cool temps anyway.
I dont know if you got other handwarmerd than the rest of the world do, but the snapping handwarmers I know can be reused. Just lay them in boiling water for like 6-8 minutes and they can be snapped again and again and again.
There is a link to her Amazon store in the description. If you buy the slippers from her store she gets a little bit of the money you spend. I checked her store and there were microwavable slippers in the ‘home’ section.
I don’t think I’d make it without my electric blanket as we only have central heat that doesn’t keep you warm when it gets to 30• so we purchased a propane wall heater and a propane tank so we’ll stay warm this winter! I also have a heating pad on my pillow for my neck and a heating pad on my couch for my back (arthritis) and we wear socks and sweats at home and use heated throws when we sitting watching tv and I use my crock pot all year long.. but my electric bill went up $33 a month😮

How do they do it?!?? They're full of crap. My electric meter does 1kw/hour. I'm still trying to figure out where the extra watts are coming from. You should see the water and sewer hourly tracking. It's off the chain. We even watched and kept track. I think it's haunted.
