I am 87 and I live in a retirement village. I look after myself cook and clean my cottage. We have a frail care system in the village but I do not want to live there as it is too regimental. So I will carry on living in my house for as long as I am able. Not easy getting old. But with God’s grace I will manage. Blessings to all you oldies out there and take care and look after yourself.
I’m 85 and living as a widow in a retirement community where I have many friends, a partner, and emergency cords to pull if I’m ill. After I reach a point where I can’t take care of myself, there is assisted living, which you don’t mention. I am happy in spite of health issues.

I like living alone. I had to raise 2 children on my own after their father disappeared. Wasn’t easy but we all survived. Now they are seniors! Don’t take this the wrong way, they used to be fun, but I would rather kill myself than live with them. I don’t want to live with anyone, ever! I can do whatever I want, whenever I want. I can go to bed early or stay up late if I feel like it. I can eat what I want whenever I want or not eat. I bought my own apartment in a senior independent living building. There are some services available, if you want that. You can hire outside help if you need it. I have had some health issues for many years. I am not afraid to come home after surgery of a serious illness and be on my own. So far, I can still take care of myself. I’m glad I can still see and hear very well so that I can drive and I do. Meals are available here but I prefer to do my own cooking most of the time because I prefer rather plain food. There are lots of other people living here which is nice and I have company at times but I have lots of my own interests which keep me busy. I share my apartment with the best cat ever and we both respect each other’s space. I moved here when I was almost 70 and soon I will be 83 and I hope I will have many more years ahead. I’ve feel very fortunate to be able to live on my own. I
We need to start some “We Care” groups at are local churches for the elderly people in our neighborhoods. What an inexpensive way to take care of our elders.

I think old folks should be permitted to live alone as long as they can possibly look after themselves. I worked as a nurse in a couple different nursing homes. They were ok nursing homes, but personally I dread that kind of cloistered group living. It is a given that a nursing home is obliged to keep you alive come hell or high water. I remember one resident who had congested heart failure. His fluid intake had to be carefully monitored to keep his lungs from filling up. (They were filling up anyway.). The man could hardy breath, he begged for a sip of water but legally we nurses were not permitted to let him have a sip. He was going to drown on his own fluids within hours. It was horribly sad. I want to live at home, but if you go to the hospital whatever Dr. you get may remand you to a nursing home. Doctor’s order. I want to live at home. I’m 75 and well aware that I can’t live forever. Just let me live and die in my own way.
I absolutely agree. Family should be there for one another. Even so, being truly caring is not what the "modern" majority wants to be. So today's younger generations are not the sort of people who want to be there for elderly parents. But there is not just one side to that coin, there a younger side to that coin and and older side. It's scary to be old, and most elders are sad to lose their independence. It's a time when the elderly can become painfully aware that those who should care just don't care enough, not even when the elderly deserve to be cared about.

I’m 78 and live alone in independent senior apartments. I have a son and daughter in law that I know care about me, but I’ve learned over the last 10 years that I can’t depend on them to keep me happy and entertained. They are there for me if I need them, but they have their own lives and responsibilities, so I’ve learned how to depend on myself and try to make my own happiness. I’ve been blessed with pretty good health and a financial situation that allows me to be totally independent at this point. I exercise 5 days a week to try to keep myself strong. I’m constantly researching health issues on UA-cam and other sites to try to help keep myself healthy. I’ve actually cured myself of a few ailments that the doctors couldn’t. My life is not perfect, but I believe that I have a blessed life.
This is very interesting. I'm 78 my eldest son has lived at home for 20 years now. He does have his own house, but it's rented out. Before his Son's mother married my Grandson lived with her. Then came to live with his dad and me. My husband died 2017 through cancer. We get along quiet well. Since 2020 my son took over the weekly grocery shopping. Also in 2020 I acquired a little dog so I have a companion with me all day. I still drive my small car to do my personal shopping and going to Church which is very important to me. I also have a daughter living near by. And my youngest son in Australia. I am very blessed my children are all friends with each other.

Elderly with their health conditions and pain, should not be expected to do childcare for their grandchildren. This is abuse and usage. Rhumatoid arthritis hurts, fibromyalgia, hurts...constantly, back pain,hip pain,bad eyesight,headaches,high blood pressure...most elderly suffer from these and more. I've heard too many adult children complain about their grandparents not babysitting enough. This is disgusting.Dont pop out the kids if you cant hire a nanny or sitters.
One of things the government or an organisation should have a service for elderly. The y 2:40 can assist an elderly whenever the need arrives, they can assist by taking them to the hospital or clinics and be paid accordingly.

I am 73 and my mother is 95 we live together and my elder brother lives very near and my daughter comes to visit every week with all the food we like and she online all day and night. My son sends monthly provisions. This is a perfect solution. It works perfectly well for all of us.

9, my husband died 17 years ago, i have a handicapped daughter only so i have no one to help me shes in a wheelchair and is quadroplegic. My back is very bad with arthritis. I live in the country where i like it but we dont have a soul to help us and believe me we dont get help. If i die m6 daughter will die a slow hard death since she cant talk, walk, or chew food. I pray everyday God will allow us to go together. Im 75 and shes 55.

$5k is a great price for a live in Caregiver. You cannot expect them to be your slave for such a low amount of $. I get $1800 a week for working 3 straight days and I get 12 hrs off each shift.
Thant is not true. There are nursing and care homes for the elderly, government sponsored if needed. But everyone in Canada,as a citizen, gets an old age allowance and that pays for nursing homes. It may take quite awhile to get into one, but they are there.

What a Stupid question! I think it’s the children’s responsibility. Today, kids make every excuse not to help Parents. They’re too busy being Selfish and unconcerned. Too busy being Greedy! They forgot all the sacrifices Parents made raising them. I’m glad to know that tradition is still alive in Europe, because it’s certainly Dead in America. We are the most irresponsible, selfish people on the planet!

Thant is not true. There are nursing and care homes for the elderly, government sponsored if needed. But everyone in Canada,as a citizen, gets an old age allowance and that pays for nursing homes. It may take quite awhile to get into one, but they are there.

What a Stupid question! I think it’s the children’s responsibility. Today, kids make every excuse not to help Parents. They’re too busy being
Selfish and unconcerned. Too busy being Greedy! They forgot all the sacrifices Parents made raising them. I’m glad to know that tradition
is still alive in Europe, because it’s certainly Dead in America. We are the most irresponsible, selfish people on the planet!
