    I enjoy how the precision drive TIGHTENED up that down tuned 24.5 scale length guitar. I have difficulties getting a tighter tone on the shorter scale lengths necks, and I think most everyone with a short scale length neck can agree that this pedal can prove itself useful in these situation. Thanks for the review!!

    The one thing I've learnt about my precision drive is that results massively vary depending on what setup you're using it with. It's the first drive pedal I've found that gets me super crunchy, tight aggressive tone (think gojira) out of my prehistoric Marshall tsl100. I'd highly recommended it if you need to push a decent hard rock amp into djent/metal territory. Tried it with an orange tiny terror and a blackstar valve head (don't recall the model) and I wasn't as impressed with the tone. Stranely, I get better results from my prs than my ibanez with this pedal too. It will live on my board for now because it's perfect for my current setup (can't afford to splash out on a new high gain head), so I'd recommend anyone try it to see if it helps their tone goals, but make sure you try it on a rig as close to your own as possible.

    You said this would be good for extended range guitars? I know they’re not typically in your wheelhouse, but you should totally check out the ESP LTD JR-208. It’s the signature model for Javier Reyes, one of the guys from Animals as Leaders. It looks incredible but doesn’t have any reviews yet, it would be so cool to see you be the first to do it.

  • @alaspoorjordan
    @alaspoorjordan 6 років тому +9

    It's a fine enough pedal, and it's good at what it does, but it's not the ultimate solution. The Airis Savage Drive or any other well built drive can do the same thing, with the exception of the noisegate. And most modern metal players will have a noise gate on their board anyways.
    Saying that other drives are not suited for metal is just marketing. A drive pedal is just boosting your signal and coloring it with some clipping and some EQ. It's not a novel idea. The magic happens in the boosting and how the EQ of the pedal is designed. No hate on Misha or HD, because it's certainly not a bad product, but to try to position it as the modern rebirth of the overdrive is a stretch IMO.

    • @lilbaement9890
      @lilbaement9890 4 роки тому

      Have you ever tried to use your average distortion pedal for metal beyond something like Black Sabbath? It doesn't work, not saying the precision drive is the only one that works, but a loooot of distortion pedals have this really crunchy or fuzzy sound that isn't really what the modern metal player is looking for at all.

    • @alaspoorjordan
      @alaspoorjordan 4 роки тому +2

      @@lilbaement9890 First off, I literally design and manufacture effect pedals, so this is sort of my wheelhouse.
      Distortions and overdrives are not the same, and generally speaking aren't used in the same context. I play modern metal music, I boost high gain amplifiers, and have had the privilege of trying a ton of different combinations. You wouldn't choose a Fuzz Face or a Dallas Rangemaster necessarily to boost a Mesa Dual Rec for metalcore. You also generally wouldn't be getting all of your dirt from a pedal in the first place. The idea is to push a high gain amp and provide some pre-preamp EQ sculpting.
      Thank you for coming to my TED Talk.

    • @xXEmbracetheMetalXx
      @xXEmbracetheMetalXx 6 років тому

      Toby K. Yeah, that price is fairly brutal.
      Usually if you combine two things (distortion and overdrive, in this case) and sell a product, you give a bit of a discount so that people will purchase your product instead of going out and buying the two separate pedals.

    • @300WINMAG360
      @300WINMAG360 6 років тому

      Since you are getting two pedals in one it's fair and reasonable. I bought this pedal new for $195. It replaced my TS9 and my Smart Gate that combined cost $230. Plus it sounds better and saves space on my board.

    • @alaspoorjordan
      @alaspoorjordan 6 років тому

      A dedicated noise gate is a lot better. Just get a Savage Drive.

    • @xXEmbracetheMetalXx
      @xXEmbracetheMetalXx 6 років тому

      Pitdog360 Yeah, you're right.
      I was going to argue that my EVH 5150 overdrive (distortion w/ built in noisegate) was only $179.99, but it's gone up to $199.99 since I purchased it.

    • @300WINMAG360
      @300WINMAG360 6 років тому

      xXEmbrace the MetalXx isn't the EVH pedal a distortion pedal meant to be used through the clean channel of an amp? If you have a cheaper amp I would suggest that over an OD pedal. But I have the EVH 5150iii 50watt and matching 4x12. So I don't want my distortion coming from a pedal. I just want a boost and the Precision Drive is excellent.

    I hate super tight modern metal. Lacks juice, thickness and feel. The best metal tones were the 80s and 90s, plus the 2000s.
    I have been n looking for a pedal to thicken up amps that are too tight and sterile. Apparently the Attack knob does a great job of adding thickness and a looser low end. Thanks for the great video.

      They're just guitars, you know. You're not supposed to strangle them.

      @@agufish cant play em at all but really like the neck. They look like aircraftcarriers kinda.
      Always felt its weird to slap 2 bass strings on a guitar tho so i play barritone instead

    Is there a particular reason you don't wear a wristband on your picking arm? I use one I find it helps with my right hand precision. But you don't have a problem with that.

    Will the noise gate that is Built in the horizon pedal silence all noise from the other pedals or just the horizon pedal itself?

    Hey! I Have a big muff tone wicker and am looking for a better distortion pedal, My overdrive is the new Fender Santa Ana, and im looking for something that can get dirty, T H I C C metal tones, and some rythym. Any suggestions? I was thinking the Metal Core, or the Metal Muff, thank you so much!!!

      Buy a Way Huge Green Rhino Mk IV instead. The active 100hz and 500hz controls give you so much more control over how the OD affects the lows and the mids. You can use it exactly like the TS808 that it's based on, or you can boost bass and scoop the mids out if you want, or do the complete opposite, or do everything in between. As far as versatility and control goes, there's no beating it. And that includes beating the Precision Drive.
      And if you want a noise gate, buy a TC Sentry.

    I don't get excited about pedals either. I have been trying to put together a pedal board but it has taken forever because a new pedal just isn't that fun
