Sea of Thieves - The Problem with "Make your own Fun"

  • In this video we will discuss the concept of "make your own fun". This is a phrase that has been thrown around a lot concerning Rare's pirate adventure game, Sea of Thieves, and is often used to defend the game's shortcomings. This argument also typically includes comments such as " it's fun with friends". I believe this argument is problematic and an interesting concept that's worth talking about. Im not here to say Sea of Thieves sucks, or that it's bad, or anything of the sort, but I certainly think there are things worth talking about. This is a No-Spoiler Review.

It feels like a tech demo. “Look we made this new game concept where you have a pirate ship and can fight other ships while looking for treasure. Now it’s still a demo, so leveling up your reputation doesn’t do anything, and there’s only one type of enemy that you don’t get anything for fighting.”

That's really only half of the game designer's job. The other half is to give players the tools to have fun and they definitely do well on that front. I think it's a pretty good game right now, but it's severely lacking actual content at the same time. I really hope they add more cuz it's a nice base :/

I wish the devs would roleplay as actually decent devs.
Joking aside, I hate the defenders for bullshit like this too. Boils down to, "well its good enough for me, you're just looking for things to complain about!". And the worst part is, there's almost no convincing them that it could be better not only for them but for everyone else that wants to give the game a chance.
Unfortunately I'm tired of being advertised to for games with potential. I dont buy games for potential that may or may not be fulfilled in the future, I buy games that fulfill its potential now and have improvements down the line that enhance the experience as icing on the cake.

Only reason why I defend this game against all the criticism is because Rare hasn't advertised this game as being any different than what it is. I don't understand what else people expected? Rare lived up to what they advertised this game to be. Complaining after launch that you expected more is just bad research on your part and entirely your own fault. Criticizing the game for it is just blame shifting.

@Unkel Dolan just because they didn't advertised it making promises saying it was going to be the best doesn't leave any excuses for an unfinished games people expect a full game that's what we expect ive played tons of free to play games that have more content than this game honestly I would be ok with this game if it was 20 bucks or 30bucks because the price asking for 60bucks for an empty game is a problem give us mircotranscation and make it free to play then its fair

People are now PvPing just to PvP, not even stealing treasure. It's essentially griefing. The people interested in PvE content can no longer complete it without being griefed, and the PvP players are running out of players to bully. The PvE content is so lacking that there aren't enough players willing to do it to keep the PvP players from running roughshod over the entire server.

Challenges and rewards are the most important things a game must get right. Strong challenge + Weak reward = "Why continue playing?" Weak challenge + Strong reward = "I didn't earn this." Weak challenge + Weak reward = "Why should I have bothered playing this in the first place?" Progression is the foundation of replayability. To give a more recent example, I have sunk nearly 300 hours into Monster Hunter World. Currently, the game barely has 20 large monsters, which (I've heard) is nothing compared to previous games in the series. So why do people (including me) keep coming back to this game? Progression and challenges, or more specifically, customization and scaling of difficulty. 20 monsters is nothing, but the massive amount of variety in items, monster parts, and decorations gives players a good enough reason to continue playing. The way the game handles evolution of difficulty is also why players bother getting to the end-game. Sure, the game recycles monsters in high-rank and for tempered investigations (this is most definitely a flaw by the way), but it brings in two whole new layers of progression; those being decorations and augmentations. Now players not only have an arsenal of weapons and armor to choose from, they also have jewels and augments, which creates practically infinite combinations of gear possibilities. In conclusion, when a game has weak challenges and/or a weak progression system, it will stick out like a sore thumb, and likely ruin the game as a whole.

honestly, i don't the developer's at fault here (do correct me if i am wrong on this) but rather the publishers and investor's trying to push the game way too quickly, as the game clearly needed at least one more year of development, sadly, it seems like the business owners and companies would rather have the game put out as fast as possible and making a quick buck. This is probably the biggest issue in the gaming industry as a whole, it used to be ran by normal people and dev teams looking to make something cool, and now we're stuck with these asshole companies simply looking to make a fuckload of cash off of ignorance.

I've been playing uncharted waters online recently. What I want for SoT is to have a guild, serve under a nation or just be a pirate guild and participate in naval battles. The guild ship could be as big as to hold at the least 20 people inside so there could be a nation battle with guilds whose fleets would count up to 5 max.
I can't really admit that pirating on other pirates is.. compelling. At best we're all under one nation so I can't really get into the immersion of being a pirate. There's no nation to boast notoriety at, no ports that would chase me with bayonets the moment I set foot on the harbor, nothing. This is 60$ btw. I just.. damn.

Hey guys, you can throw your teammates at the 20 foot tall monsters so they can mount and ride them, get drunk at the gathering hall and armwrestle your friends, you can wear super tall wiggly hats that make it so when you heal, you also heal your teammates. You can steal a fire breathing dragons egg and be chased by the mother from its nest all the way down to base camp while your friends block fireballs for you. Go fishing and put those fish on display in an aquarium in your house.
Monster Hunter world exists as a game with tons of fun to be had without detriment to the incredibly solid core experience. If you REALLY want a game to dick around in, put your money towards something that actually has content.

I stuck with Sea of Thieves a whole year, but then I just lost all interest I got used to ever sound, every rock and creek of the ship, and every wave that I just find it so boring now. i rlly love the concept of the game and i have had so much fun! although sometimes i feel very dissapoimted by the lack of depth this game has. for example, the other day i was in a sloop woth my friend when we stumbled across an uncharted island. we then went ashore and found a cove in the middle. I dived down and found qn underwater cave entrance. at this point my interest was slightly peaked. i kept explorimg and soon saw an air pocket. the pocket was the beginning of an underground cave. I was now extremely curious and was telling my friend to get down there. i kept exploring only to find a dead end with a skeleton and a couple opened chests. Its places like those that could be the entrance to a whole new adventure. i really wish there was meaningful things to find via exploration. If i could choose my own playstyle such as a rapier instead of a cutlass, or a different ship design, i could havw so much fun. if the quests could actually take me on an adventure, maybe telling the story of an ill fated crew doomed to die? maybe im sailing to another island i spot a rogue wave in the distance and veer to port, hoping to save my precious cargo. or capturing ships? maybe you kill an entire ships crew and you raise your flag that you csn customise. then the enemy crew cant respawn on that ship, but a new one far away. These are only a few of the ideas my friends and i have thought off that we think could reallly improve the experience.

Well lets see, things that might be neat: Ship upgrades... Like maybe let us swap out cannons for things like:
Harpoon gun: Lets us harpoon our ship to other ships to real them in closer... (Or it just rips a hole in their ship if both are anchored.)
Catapult: Allows us to launch barrels at other ships.(Or into the path of other ships as a trap...)
Dingy lift: Allows our ship to carry a small rowboat that is useful for navigating shallow water, as well as hauling multiple chests back to the ship.) Naturally the Dingy could perhaps be upgraded with it's own cannon?
Maybe even have figure heads that improve the damage the ship can deal when ramming other ships?
Basically let us upgrade the crap out of our ships to try to make the ultimate ship.(And since this IS a pirate game, other player crews can board and even steal your ship and make it their own as a shortcut to having a good ship...) Basically ships can be leveled up getting better and stronger as their crew builds their reputation, while stealing ships from high ranking crews would be a viable shortcut to quickly building up your reputation as a great pirate.
As for other things I think would be cool? Being able to not only have a customizable island base, but also perhaps have rankings based on the size of your gold hoard... (Stealing or sinking the ship of a rival pirate spawns a map to their island base and gives your a chance to raid their treasure hoard to increase your own...) Maybe even give us collectables that we can take and add to our pirate lairs to show off... Which can then be stolen...)

I agree with your overarching thesis about the game's strong foundation, which doesn't do enough to go beyond that strong foundation. However, I think you ignore the more meaningful defense of SOT for a more edgy argument that tries to appeal to the "No Man's Sea" crowd. I recognize that the game does not live up to its $60 price tag, and for some people that's the end of the story, but I think there's a lot to be said about this game that most commentators such as yourself overlook.
The best aspect of SOT is the tension around the skull fort. I haven't seen a single review that's articulated the breadth of experience you can find here. I've probably "finished" 20 of these fort raids, and unless its uncontested, almost every raid plays out differently... like wildly differently. I've seen some really crazy turn of events and these forts are what have me coming back to the game almost every night.
Rare nailed the Skull Fort dynamic. It achieves just the right balance of risk vs reward to place players in a position to at-all-times consider cooperation vs betrayal. In other words, tension. Achieving this tension is a major accomplishment that consistently generates unique experiences. Rare understands that human interaction can function like a prism to produce a near infinite range of potential outcomes. They deserve more credit for creating this tension and I believe that people will over time come to appreciate it more.
Reviewers and commentators keep calling for wider quest variety, and yes that would help. But what will really sustain SOT is another type of skull fort experience where we can find a similar tension between players. Currently, my crew just jumps between servers looking for the skull fort, with only brief interludes of doing the more basic quests when we need to decompress a little. In this respect, I am thankful for how boring these quests can be. Seriously. I wouldn't do them if they were deep and involved because the skull fort can be so draining already. Sometimes I just wanna set the sails and dig up a treasure chest. Simple. Relaxing.
Speaking of setting the sails, the sailing mechanics are a lot deeper than people realize. True there's no skill tree or whatever. Instead there's an ACTUAL skill progression that takes a lot of practice to improve at. My crew is at the point now where we can out-sail just about anyone. We're all approaching Pirate Legend status and I can guarantee you that those lowly pirate crews will learn to fear the site of our pirate legend ship when it comes screaming downwind after their treasure-laden, dead-in-the-water, sorry excuses for a pirate ship.
Again I want to reiterate that the game is not worth the $60 price tag. But there's a lot more to this game than reviewers give it credit for. If you doubt me then come meet us at the skull fort and we'll send you to Davy Jones' Locker, no fancy weapon upgrades required, just a couple salty sea dogs. Or cooperate with a flashing lantern and we'll split the treasure before sharing a grog at the tavern. One of the funniest things you can do is have two crews get drunk at the tavern and then knife fight (no guns) with puke flying everywhere. So absurd.
Anyway, those are my thoughts. See you on the seas!

Thanks for your comment. I agree with you on the skull forts dynamic ( in fact there is footage of me doing one in this video)
But I attributed that to the "core foundation"
All of those interactions are still very much a part of the emergent gameplay this provides. It's a very unique dynamic indeed, and I also agree more stuff like this would be great. Perhaps random events like npc ships that sink and send out a distress flare ( or a more thematically appropriate way of alerting players )
Then it's basically a race for the ships to get the treasure off the sunken ship and I bet there'd be some cool dynamics there. I think SoT's would greatly benefit from random events!

    • @StormReaper5
      @StormReaper5 6 років тому +1

Thanks in turn for your reply. I agree about the game benefiting from more random events. Here are a couple ideas that my buddies were talking about:
      - A ghost Ship (aka The Flying Dutchman) that sails around with a skeleton crew. It should be about on par with the skeleton fort in terms of reward and challenge to take it down.
      - Make the merchant quests public and more lucrative. As in, have a board at every outpost which calls for certain goods delivered to certain outposts. Making the quests public will attract pirates and create more player interactions...
      - For the love of Black Beard there needs to be a reward for killing the kraken. Give a reward for that and a couple more sea monsters to look out for and SOT could easily branch into a sort-of monster hunter lite.
      - Custom outposts would be so cool. They could hide it behind a wall of fog as an in-world explanation for why it appears differently to everyone.

You can make anything fun with friends. If a game needs you to play with friends then that's a very weak game.
Also it sucks the reloading is so fast that this is a straight up shooter. It should have been about sword fighting and one bullet shot. If you miss... pray cause reloading should take a long time.

Here is my biggest issue with the game. They sold it as a game were you can be whatever you want, you make your own adventures, but gave you zero affect on the world you are playing in. I get that people are having fun, but a story changes the world you are set in. A game were the players make their own stories should theoretical have a growing in game history. Lie all you want but this doesn't have a game history. You get off and there wasn't any proof you ever played (in game).

    @freakquency0004 6 років тому

As far as pvp is concerned, I think the game would be considerably more fun if you had a "chance" of finding higher tier supplies on islands, with limited use. Things like exploding cannonballs, harpoons to tether ships and keep them from sailing away, molotov cocktails to burn down sails if not put out with water, reinforced materials to strengthen the defense of your ships hull, skeleton potions that could spawn friendly skeletons to attack nearby enemies..things that by no means unbalance the game given their rarity and limited use. Also would be nice to see a few different quest types for each faction, or perhaps "legendary" bounties that could potentially drop for each which leads to something a little more expansive..a dungeon leading to a skeletal"boss fight" for order of souls, a hunt for a particularly rare animal with its own capture mechanic (( maybe you need to fight it first, or you need to tranquilize it with blowdarts.. maybe it takes 2-3 people to carry..anything)) for the merchants guild, and artifact hunts that bestow different ailments/ buffs when in your possession. For instance, " the eye of the storm- a glass eye said to belong to the sea god himself, Poseidon! " once collected, a violent storm would follow the players, forcing them to consistently traverse rough waters and deal with lightning bolts, constant rain and ship repairs." Turning in legendary artifacts to the gold hoarders would not only give you a nice chunk of gold, but give you access to legendary gear..an eye of the storm eyepatch or something of the like.

Now they should just build something on top of that, which should be super easy and quick to do now that the heavy lifting is done. But for some reason, they didn't.

  • @SlippyLegJones
    @SlippyLegJones 6 років тому

That's why I hope they prioritize mechanics and events over cosmetics and bugfixes...
The problem I have with "make your own fun" is that when you start a game, it's hard to think "I'm going to do something completely retarded and it will be amazing". What you end up doing is "I'm going to start a quest and hope something happens, if not then there goes 30 minutes of something possibly happening".
If they make complex missions and mechanics, then it won't feel like a waste to fight skeletons. It might actually be more fun than PvP if they can do it right. Having basic PvP with complex PvE allows for a broad gameplay style, rather than "this is the game, and here's the chores". PvE as complex and challenging as Dark Souls III will make you want to PvE.
If they make complex things to buy then it won't feel pointless to gain gold. Which is why I really hope they make the 4 new ships coming later buyable and not free. Something to work toward. I also don't understand what's so hard about making balanced weapons? They say they don't want experienced players to have an advantage but, couldn't they just make different gun-types that are equally good as the basic pistol? Then the gameplay in PvP will constantly feel different with new weapons.
Right now, there's stuff to do that can last you long, but it shouldn't be "can" it should be "will". I'd compare it to an early version of Rust, Terraria or The Forest. All of the 1.0 versions of these games are about as dumb as the 1.0 versions as SoT which also gives me hope for real content.

I'm a newer player and have loved playing this game thus far, but it feels like it's far too easy to grief newer and/or less experienced players. It kinda sucks how many times that I've spawned in, spent 10-15 mins looting-up and stocking my ship, just to get blown out of the water before I even get a chance to leave port. I dunno. I feel like there should at least be some sort of save points where you can revert to your ship's state of AT LEAST basic goods from that point in time. I'm fine with losing my treasure if I get wrecked, but let me at least have the rest of my supplies from a specific save point or something. I don't feel like that's asking too much. Hell, I'd even settle for a larger carry capacity so it's easier to resupply myself and get out of the gate faster. I know that it's a pirate game, and I'm all for that aesthetic, but there are clearly MANY areas where they could improve the state of things, ESPECIALLY, for newer and more inexperienced players.

I think it's closed minded to say that 'people who make their own fun are wrong'. I play with my buddies, we raid, plunder and pirate it up. I'd say in terms of narrative, mechanics and systems, the game is weak. But regardless, I, and many other, enjoy the game. That doesn't mean it's lacking quality, it's just lacking core structure that specific gamers want. That may be the majority of players, but it's just insulting to players that do. You might not care about that, but being condescending to people because you disagree with them, makes you a prat, not a scholar. I'm not 'imagining' my fun, I just enjoy it. It's not that the game needs excuses, by all means critique the development and content, but don't make out that people arguing your point are stupid. Some of the critique, very valuable, but insulting a portion of your viewership, however small, is not noble, it's just ignorant and petty.

True, but an open world pirate game where every other crew is a player just screams binge-worthy game. I would say that a game set in this genre absolutely needs to cater to the binge gaming audience. A world like this where you can just live in for several hours every day and never run out of things to do seems like the best fit. This shouldn't be a casual Mario Party styled experience, though there is nothing wrong with games going for that, so long as their genre fits it.

I'm so happy I managed to get a refund for this game. I actually felt dirty after spending money on this game. Only a couple of hours in was I already bored. And while sailing was a fun multitask challenge at first, it became more routine than fun: Our friend who was self appointed captain would yell at us to do things around the ship (while he sat and steered...) and then we'd do it. So I didn't even have the benefit of having a good time because the one person in our crew who wouldn't leave the bridge would constantly get on my case for not being at his beck and call every second.

of course they kill me in the end.
like im not so much mad at the encounter, but like thats ALL i expect in this game unless youre with "friends". like how the fuck do you think i got these friends?? popped outta thin air? no i MET THEM. of course this aspect within the game isnt exactly a downside but it definitely detracts from the variance of things to do and see and experience. like all there is to do is fetch quest and try not to get killed by people. gets boring. and definitely doesnt make me want to play in the furture when half the population play like assholes.
