  • My husband and I spent 2 years building our dream boat. We started with plans that we had to change quite a bit to make it how we wanted it.
    The Darla Jean is a 34ft Motor Catamaran with a 16ft beam and a 1.5ft draft. We have twin Honda 60’s on her and get 3miles to the gallon with a cruising speed around 16mph. We have 3 solar panels that get 310watts per panel, a fresh water catch that can hold up to 66 gallons of water, a generator out back and 2 AC units on board.
    We hope to be cruising in the Bahamas on her in the summer of 2020! I’m not the best at editing videos so don’t be to hard on me ;) hope you enjoy!!!!

    As a professional boat builder (back in the day) not only do I see your hard work, I feel your pain. People ask me if I’ll ever build again and the answer is a resounding “hell no”. I just finished my probably last project for my life. At 65 years old I just finished a complete refit of my 50 Lien Hwa trawler. To be clear what that means is it was a 10 month, 8 to 12 hour days, six days a week slog. Is it beautiful, yes. But honestly...I’m done. Now I plan to spend the rest of my able years cruising. Wish me luck and a long life. Thanks for sharing your videos.

      Congratulations on completing your trawler! I will most definitely check out your channel so I can see that beauty. I feel you on the “hell no” I unfortunately developed epoxy sensitivity during our build so anytime I’m around the stuff I have to wear a full hazmat suit, which really sucks in Florida. Best of luck to you and I wish you many more adventures 😁

    I love it! Vacuum formed fibreglass foam composite? Sorry my knowledge is low on this. Is this state of the art for boat building? Did you end up with a lighter and stronger hull than a wood/fibreglass overlay? Thanks! Fair winds and following seas!

    • @darlajean1045
      @darlajean1045  4 роки тому +4

      Thank you! If you check out the video at 1:40 I showed what the boat is made out of. Vacuum seal infusions are not new but I haven’t seen many people that build their own boats try it. We love it because we’ll never have to deal with rotting wood. We also put fillets on every connection on the boat to make it super strong so I never have any worries in ruff seas.

    • @darlajean1045
      @darlajean1045  7 місяців тому

      Believe it or not my husband learned the majority of stuff for the build from UA-cam and his own independent research. We also would need a bigger boat for all the solar panels to get the power Mike would want 😆. Plus people don’t think about all the overcast days. Thank you for your comment!

    Working those little 60s hard pretty big boat I think you would have got better fuel efficiency going bigger

    • @darlajean1045
      @darlajean1045  9 місяців тому

      The designer of the boat specified 40 to 60 hp……we are using high thrust motors which are designed for the purpose of pushing heavy loads. It exceeds predicted efficiency numbers. Bigger motors use more gas and are less efficient if you don’t need the extra power.

  • @conqueringlion420
    @conqueringlion420 7 місяців тому

    So it’s basically just cheap thin wood covered in fiberglass and foam to float? How strong are these things then are they capable of hitting offshore big waves high winds without tearing apart

    • @darlajean1045
      @darlajean1045  7 місяців тому

      No wood = No rot There is no wood on this boat. If you watch the first video of the build you’ll get a better understanding. We’ve crossed the gulf stream with her 6 times and ran into 6ft to 8ft waves during a squall and handled it just fine but personally I wouldn’t want to be out in anything bigger than 4 footers with this boat.

    Dezy,
    Would you have any interest in passing-on, or selling, your molds? I'm not looking to cut Richard out of license & plan fees.
    My utopian thought has been a set of "community molds" available to any builder, with the custody controlled by/of (at least paperwork/legal if not physical) Richard. Fwiw I've personal and other options for dry secure storage 90 minutes outside of downtown Chicago in the middle of a booming wharehouse truck-shipping lane(SE, WI).
    That'd make it much more likely for those [of us] to build what we ultimately want instead of the Skoota 30.
    We'd somehow make you whole on your cost...
    Lloyd.

    • @darlajean1045
      @darlajean1045  4 роки тому +1

      We had some extenuating circumstances after the boat build was completed and ended up not keeping the molds. If anyone would have asked for them we probably would have gave them away for free.
