  • Freedom Planet 2 released on Steam and PC on 2022. And now in 2024 it is out on the Playstation, Nintendo Switch and even the Xbox!
Galaxy Trail's sequel to the first Freedom Planet took nearly 7 years to develop, with a hiatus in-between. The long wait created doubts but eventually the game came out with 4 playable characters. Sash Lilac, Carol Tea, Milla Basset and now Neera Li go through over 20 stages with unique story modes, movesets and much more.
So, was the game worth the wait?

So the thing with the NPCs in the hub worlds is they will have new things to say after every little story event, indicated by the lightbulb above their heads. If you keep up with all the new dialogue it makes the world feel more lived in, but if you aren't keeping up with all of them they don't really serve much purpose.

FP2 Carol is such an upgrade. Her pounce similar to a dash, but really helps precision both platforming faster and options to engage enemies up close however direction you strike. The speed and charm really shines strong! Enemy variance does need work - we have same tiny diagonal shooting mech from FP1 Stage 2 Relic Maze in few stages the FP2 endgame, and few instances enemies do clog the action including minibosses that you either pass by, or just exist with option to walk past. The time capsules system still odd, but good stays purely optional.

I think Carols's basic moveset is a hell of a lot better in FP2, but the motorcycle feels heavily nerfed to the point where I barely used it in my carol playthrough. The bike doesn't really help you gain much height anymore because they removed its screw-attack like double jump that it had in FP1. But combing Carol's Pounce with her aerieal kick attack pretty much instantly brings you to top speed, which kind of defeats the other use of the motorcycle (going fast quickly). So the motor cycle only really helps you climb up walls faster.

Nice review though do you know if this game runs in an acceptable pace on Switch?
I really hope this game gets more attention now it's on consoles to guarantee the possibility of Freedom Planet 3.

I tried it on the Switch and it runs just fine for me!
However I noticed some issues with other Switch owners from the Galaxy Trail Discord. They seem to be isolated cases so I highly recommend checking out their Discord in case a bug or two needs reporting!

Ancestral Forge is a very fun stage to learn how to skip segments in, especially with Carol and her bike's ability to disregard the purple goop's life purpose.

The enemy spam is thought out, it's the idea of "overwhelming force".
Much like the first game, there are situations where you're intended to keep running through, rather than trying to fight every minor battle.
One stage you showed in particular takes place during two armies fighting each other, eventually leading to the part where the player gets to steamroll the mobs.
And in the case of Syntax dropping a squad on you, this is a direct antagonist interaction in an attempt to halt your progress. So yeah, more than the comfortable amount of enemies was the plan.

There are also a few other unique NPC interactions throughout the game for those who are curious enough to hunt for them, I think Neera gets at least one with almost each guard in Shang Tu. My favorite one is with Lilac at a salon in The Battlesphere hub.

Still never gonna understand the takes I keep hearing about FP1's tone, I've always felt like the mood of any scene was contextually validated, and was simple to keep up with as long as you weren't tuning out. The common comparisons always being the scenes that establish the villain's personality VS. the scenes showing us that our main characters are indeed kids.
Of course they could cut the latter, but then they'd be asking me to assume a lot more about the relationship of the characters, their daily life, and their personalities. Doing so would make showing a crack in their friendship a very dull and meaningless moment, and I've already seen a game do that, so no thanks.
I guess there's also the former, but who'd want to nerf the presence of a villain like Brevon? The fact he causes grief to the characters in the story, and the player during gameplay makes victory have that much more impact.

While I love Brevon as a villain the interrogation stage was a bit offputting. Especially because I was playing it in front of a 6 year old and was definitely not expecting that lmao. And they were the one to point out the torn pigtails to me 💀

@@GoGalactic To be fair, Brevon did pop someone's head off in the very first scene of the game. X'P
That is kind of funny though, most adults I've seen play this don't even notice Lilac's hair whisker things, but a 6 year old was able to identify them.

i found your channel looking for iji content, now i see a freedom planet 2 review and in it you reference megaman x4 and 5... man, it feels like i'm watching a mirror image of myself with all the same interests lmao. very good video, loved the review!
also, if you haven't already, i think you would enjoy completing the shang tu museum, the reward is very, VERY cool, probably my favorite part of the whole game!

Hehe yeah, I love talking about the lesser known gems and that's why I started this channel in the first place

This review was great! It was fun to get to see more of this sequel! Once I get through my backlog, I'll get it! (Will take a while considering I'm playing the Mass Effect trilogy and then will move on to the Kingdom Hearts series and Doom Eternal...but the point still stands!)

2:31 These screen settings doesn't appear in my ps4 version, where are they?

They might not be implemented yet. To my understanding the porting is done by a separate team who were prioritizing stability and keeping up with the content updates. Hopefully they'll roll them out in the coming days as they patch up certain things

I’m not a fan of Corazon. She just kinda shows up with no explanation of where she was while her sister was running from a sadistic warlord, and uses Carol as an excuse for teaming up with Merga. Carol’s story in general just kinda feels… there. I hope Milla and Neera have more going on with their journeys. I dunno, I fear the director took the criticism of the first game’s story to heart and dialed back on the character development as a result.
Gameplay wise, though, this game is a huge improvement across the board from its predecessor

it is an honest critique to say that Lilac's story is pretty much the focus. I had a portion of the script dedicated to the story but basically nixed most of it cause I couldn't do it properly without spoilers so It would've added a lot of time. So like the premise of the characters sound intriguing but honestly the large scope of the game bogged it down and what seemed like interesting gaps (say, Milla and Askal teaming up, Or Carol showing up with an old guest) is sadly just not built upon and glossed over

Yes, Milla is hard to maneuver and requires a lot of thought and that's why is my favorite character due to the strategy aspect. 🐶

I think you supposedly don't have to defeat every stage enemy, is more like a stage hazard to be avoided in my opinion.

Wait... playing with auto guard?... seriously?... this game isn't hard enough, with a couple of tries in the more difficult parts is enough to get through, I only got 3 or 4 (or may be 6 🤔) game overs in my first play through.
Learning the timing to guard is part of the fun, in some point it will become second nature like a rhythm game...
And yes, there is a penalty for turning on the auto guard, the penalty is less fun, what kind of experience comes for the easy way? didn't you know? the "F" in Fun comes from the "F" of Frustration, the joy of overcoming a difficult task is amazing.

    • @GoGalactic
      @GoGalactic  2 місяці тому +1

You're right, but gotta remember not everyone takes the same enjoyment from the same difficulty! Which is probably why auto-guard is an option to begin with lol
