Watched a few different reviews on this game and have to say thank you for actually taking the time to go over how each character plays instead of just showing almost nothing but Lilac gameplay. All and all excellent work on the whole review, you convinced me to pick up this game over others in the current steam sales even though it's one of the smallest discounts on my wishlist.
When it comes to video games or even movies, many people claim that a sequel is always less good than the prequel. In FP2 this isn’t the case AT ALL. The graphics, the voice acting, the styles of playing, the game mechanics, the story itself and ofc, the amazing music… This is how you make a f***ing sequel. It’s sad that FP2 isn’t know well, since it’s an indie game. Hopefully more people will play it when it comes to other consoles like Nintendo Switch in the summer of 2023. I hope that a famous UA-camr, like Markiplier of Jacksepticeye, would play the game so it could gain more attention. Galaxytrail in my eyes, deserves MUCH more credit for everything they did in this amazing sequel in the last 7 years. And like you said, the voice actors do an Amazing job, all of them. Every time I hear Dawn M. Bennet speaking the voice of Lilac, I always think of the English voice of Frieda in Attack On Titan.
Yes indeed! While it was never mentioned, it is my game of the year. Even when Bayo 3, Frontiers and Star Ocean Devine Force dropped, I played this game a lot more than all 3. Granted, I have beaten Frontiers and Bayo 3 by now, but it was not easy to do with Freedom Planet 2's presence. Its definitely in my top 10 games for sure.
That doesn't apply with gaming though. 9/10 the sequel is better and that's due to a very of reasons. Most gamers know this lol. The nature of games, iteration, building off the first, engine improvements, learning from mistakes etc
Excellent review! Super thorough, great script and reading voice, everything was awesome and I can tell you're super passionate about Freedom Planet 2. Just wanted you to know that I played the game because of this video (and it was indeed rad)
Much appreciated! And this is exactly why I make these vids. Give them the attention they deserve so everyone can experience how awesome they are. The fact that it got you to play the game brings a smile to my face.
Neera's ice pillar traps can also be used to reflect projectiles (similar to Milla's shield). its kinda like a mini-fort you can use against enemies or bosses that throw a projectiles at you (tho you know not everything can be reflected). Very useful for the final boss especially
The year 2022 is when Sonic Frontiers, Freedom Planet, and Spark the Electric Jester 3 came out. You probably should check out Spark the Electric Jest 3. (and Spark 1. And Spark 2)
I think it’s a great sequel, but I still have things I prefer in the first game. 1. The story. I like Merga as a villain, as a character more than Brevon, but the galactic scale of the original just felt more epic. 2. Carol’s story is pretty bleh. She just got rewritten into a one dimensional daredevil between entries. In the original, her jokester personality contrasted nicely with her tendency to keep Lilac grounded. “Be Miss Heropants some other time,” “This is so much bigger than us,” etc. Sure, she maybe didn’t always have the greater good in mind, but her love for her best friend made her weigh their options in a way that Lilac was unwilling to. Then you have her sister, who I thought was gonna have a reason for joining Merga that actually made some sense in terms of protecting Carol. But no, she just seriously never thought this whole time that ending the world would be bad for them, too. Good job. 3. The Jukebox is file specific, and there’s no option in the main menu to just listen to all you’ve collected across files, either. Like why? So I wouldn’t call it perfect, but gameplay wise, it’s pretty fantastic. And I wouldn’t be complaining about the Jukebox option if the soundtrack wasn’t so good!
As someone who is still waiting for an OST to buy, the Jukebox complaint is 100% justified! Also as much as I liked Merga as a villain, ain't no way she's touching Brevon. Not by a long shot. I avoided bringing that up in the vid for spoiler reasons, but yeah, Brevon is straight up RUTHLESS in the first game.
Great review. Also Lilac and Carol are both in Rivals of Aether as Workshop mods, albeit in their first game designs (the second game's sprites are harder to translate into Rivals sized pixels). Milla and Neera are not in there yet.
I'll have to check those mods out. I always felt they are a perfect fit for this game since the first entry. With how often they appeared in other indie titles, I'm surprised they hadn't showed up in Aeither yet as official characters. (Lilac made a cameo in Hat in Time, and I know she is a playable character in an indie racer...the name escapes me right now.)
@@2elusivereviews The advent of Steam Workshop meant that any more guest appearances for the main Rivals of Aether cast were never going to happen, so fanmade mods in other games are your best bet there. That being said Lilac is a playable character in Indie Pogo and Runbow and she and Carol are in Super Indie Karts which is the game you were referring to at the end there.
Fantastic review of a fantastic game. I think the voice work and story were particularly much more polished this time around. Definitely a killer sequel.
For real, this game is just... incredible. A perfect sequel. If you like the first game you absolutely MUST play the second game. I hope it comes out soon for consoles so more people can play it cause this game deserves to be remembered. There are a few things about it that I didn't like but they are small nitpicks. I really can't recommend this game enough.
By anime standards, wow good voice acting. By any other standard - not so much. Kudos to the guy who did the OST though. Maybe the reason I don't like the dialogue is that it just seems like it's not really needed. We didn't need it in the days of Genesis! lol I've edited my negative comment to instead pose a question: does a game like this need to have real voice actors?
Damn bruh I thought the voiceover was pretty good tbh, I’m honestly impressed with the improvement over the original considering they had so many returning actors reprise their roles.
I didn't think the VA's were THAT bad, I heard way way worse. Then again, I've grown up during the era of Capcom's amazing voice acting choices during the early 90s and the 2000s 🤣 But as for your question, I say I'm in different. If it's there, I don't mind it at all. If it's not, it won't be enough to really make to big of a difference during my experience.
I think it's what makes FP1/2 kind of unique. I mean, we don't see so much 2D games that have fully voiced characters. Maybe there are some but I just don't know about them
Mmmmmm yes, ANOTHER Wario-like indie game that emphasizes on speed and exploration that can allow you to rack up immensely high combos. Does this seem familiar? Because I think of towers of pizza as well as explosion and different forms of alcohol. In all seriousness, I really want to get this, and it’s nice to see a game that has qualities of Wario Land 4 that isn’t an escape sequence.
Oh yeah i cant move to left or right to dodge i can only jump and run forward or backward. Wtf are we still in 1998s? Hello platformers must die already.
Um... modern platformers are not that simple. FP2, for example, has way more mechanics than you listed. It has combat system, different stage gimmicks and gameplay situations. Take any other platformer, it will always add different things to that "jump and run forward or backward"

Excellent review Elusive keep it up brother 👏
Can and will do, homie! Glad you enjoyed it!
8:02 I think they completely nullify damage if you have the right element, since I remember being able to walk on lava with the fire shield
Amazing review definitely my game of the year
Same here!
To be honest I am shocked this didn’t even get considered for a game awards nomination. Not even a mention!
I wouldn't go THAT far, but it is a legendary title for sure.
Great review, hope ull keep reviewing gems
Hell yeah I will! Glad you enjoyed it.
In short they made the ultimate master piece, that's my opinion
No arguments here!
Waited a loOoOoOoOong time for the consol realease
It was completely worth it! I just can't stop playing it!
Right?! I stand on business when I say this game is perfection!
Freedom Planet is great siquel. Good review btw
whats the song used int he first 20 seconds of the video?

It IS for modern consoles actually. Megaman Legacy Collection 2 has Megaman 8 as part of it's line up.
I’m REALLY looking forward to getting this game for my switch on the 4th of April! 😃
