This movie did so much better job at portraying Hollywood than Once upon a time in Hollywood did....... I don't think it is an accident that both Margot and Brad played in either of these movies. Babylon was iconic!

One of the reasons Babylon has failed at the box office is that people simply don't want to leave their house anymore. They would rather wait for the movie to come out on streaming. No wonder everyone has gotten fat! Three days after I saw Babylon our wonderful newly renovated movie theatre shut down and went into bankruptcy. The poor attendance of Babylon was the last straw for our movie theatre which had already been struggling for an audience that would rather stay home and stream.

@@jackjules7552 that’s too bad because seeing this movie on the big screen was an experience. I think theatre audiences expect a certain type of movie, usually the kind that contains immense levels of CGI, or, like you said, they’ll just wait for it to be streamed. Ironically, that somewhat fits partially into the narrative of what I think this film is trying to convey.

Saw the film two days after Christmas at the Chinese Theatre on Hollywood Blvd with only 3 other people attending while staying at The Roosevelt across the street. Meta transcendent to the max. Absolutely loved the film. An instant classic.

I also saw Babylon at one of our newly renovated huge movie theatres in our neighborhood. The movie theatre shut down and went into bankruptcy three days after I saw Babylon there! This movie had countless disturbing scenes, however some of the performances were engaging. I get that the filmmaker showcased the transition from silent films to talkies and how it adversely impacted many of the players in front and behind the camera but damn. Respect to the delivery from the cast and crew.

Just watched it, never seen so many people walk out of the theatre but I enjoyed it for what it was. I absolutely love wolf of Wall Street, casino, once upon a time… this movie could’ve been just as good if it had better focus 😢 but what I am glad is that Chazelle got this out of his system, I would rather him shoot for the stars and miss than under write to stay “safe”. Great review!

I didn't know how long it was going in and that hurts the movie. To me it's one of those movies that you feel the length and some. Two and half hours in I started to feel it was going to wrap up but it had 40 min left. Acting was really good, technical aspects great, story was nothing special. It starts off messy and then gets its feet but then again shifts to mess by the end. By the last third I knew manni was going to break out and live, laroy die from drugs, Conrad turn miserable. It was drug out watching the ending. Also it was unnecessarily over the top when it didn't need to be. I like crazy and shocking stuff, but it hurt the movie IMO.

This isn’t anything like uncut gems i hope. That movie literally gave me anxiety. It seems chaotic. Which is fine as king as it isn’t filmed like uncut gems. I need some air to breath every once and awhile. It was non Stop talking and pace with uncut gems. If you know what I mean then you know. I’m fine with faced paced but not on that level of uncut gems.

I think the review is spot on. It’s ambitious, chaotic, messy, incredible and it’s one that will definitely benefit from viewing in a theater on the largest screen possible.
Despite its flaws, the overall experience was overwhelmingly positive and it’s a ride unlike anything we’re used to. It doesn’t tell a neat little story, it’s a whiplash (haha, pun not intended) where minutes after one scene ends, you’re still processing everything before being plunged into another memorable scene. By the time it’s over, I think most people will say it was a unique experience and applaud its ambition.

The sick shyt in the first ten minutes of the movie is a shock test. If you can sit through that without leaving like I and a few others did then they got you for a whole new trend of sick shyt in movies.
This movie reminds me of Dr Dres Chronic album.

I can say that maybe you and I had the same reservations. I don’t like overracting, bombast, and what I will just classify as Baz Luhrman-esque (all show and no heart). The film starts off and you may be like “oh god, wtf did I just get myself into”. Within the first ten minutes, we get a pretty cheesy shit joke and then we see someone urinating, and mountains of cocaine. It felt like an exaggeration of a wild party (lots of drugs, nudity, people fucking all over the place, a woman singing about how much she loves her girlfriend’s pussy). It’s a lot. But somehow, this movie fucking works. Its one of the most audacious movies I’ve seen in years. It doesn’t ways hit a homerun, but when the blue people from Avatar show up and you see The Terminator and the movie ends, you’ll be like “wtf kind of movie was this.” You will either love it and appreciate the balls it had or absolutely hate it. I loved it and the pacing, editing, and music really helped the film not seem as long as it is. It’s not perfect, but it’s a great ride and I’ll definitely be rewatching in the cinema. So hope that helps!

Agreed. Pros were... great music and costume, good scenes with tobey and margot. Funny moments throughout. But Cons were the Run time and not enough character info for any of them. I walked away not knowing much as at all about Faye or sydney and wish there was more about nellie. And missing current info like how far did faye and nellie get...were they in love ? And manny did they ever actually get intimate ? Maybe cut out some of the vomit and elephant stuff and include more arc time.
But in the end I appreciate the chance Damien took and the boldness. I'd watch it again on stream for sure.

So far my favourite review of Babylon is just its byline: "Babylon is an defecating elephant" 🤣 I didn't read the review. I just watched Margot Robbie & Carey Mulligan talk about "Babylon" & "She Said"-they couldn't be more different films! Margot talked about the energy, the brilliance of Damian, the 700 extras vs CGI 😳 she said this kind of film probably wont be made again. That's probably true due to AI & CGI effects but I get the feeling that the director couldn't harness it. I have the same problem with Baz Lurhmans The Great Gatsby & Elvis. BTW the Actors on Actors series & Directors on Directors Variety is currently screening on UA-cam for Pre awards season are interesting! THR is also doing round tables with writers, actors etc. If you're into film some of these are really worth watching. As is Movie Files💜

The cineplex had been a staple of the neighborhood for years and had even recently undergone a major renovation of all its 15 screens. A week or so after Babylon was booked all 15 screens were shut down and it looks like it will be bulldozed as have so many movie theatres in Manhattan since streaming took hold of the public.

Actors playing actors spout dialog as to how magical Hollywood is, the craft is a noble one and what is up on the screen is meaningful in a movie that is a meaningless three hour snoozefest full of grotesque, crude and vulgar scenes. A poison pen letter to Hollywood. I don't know why there was a need to make this movie, but I do know there is no need to see it on the big or little screen.

Margot Robbie is casted in so many movies, it's OVERKILL now. Sometimes too much of ONE person can have a backlash. Margot Robbie roles the past 3 years are redundant, in playing the same "out of control" roles one after another. With I, Tonya and the "over-acted" Harley Quinn as examples.
The reason for it's failure at the box-office...the story is all over the place. Who's the lead? Too many characters to follow and all of them are so over-the-top with their performances. When a movie has too many story-lines with an all-star cast, how do you expect the audience to care.
Film making 101; have a lead on 95% on screen/page, so your audience can follow and care about them. Some failed examples: 1999-Magnolia, 2022-Amsterdam, 2011-New Year's Eve, 2013-The Great Gatsby, 2021-The French Dispatch, 2016-Collateral Beauty and 1996-Everyone Says I Love You.
All those movies failed financially. Having one "A-List" actor should be enough.

    • @janetrobertson9199
      @janetrobertson9199 Рік тому

Ensemble films are the foundation blocks of film craft. But they can run away from directors. One lead role films - like Tar are very hard to sell. Magnolia is an amazing film, who cares if it doesn't make $$. I think that Margot is facing the usual typical backlash - but it's her time and she's grabbing it. Good on her! She's also producing great films like "Promisoing Young Woman".
The dea that we need a fresh new face all the time is tik tok Hollywood which I guess is where we are heading. Harley Quinn Birds of Prey - is a huge favourite among women who don't usually like action films. It copped a lot of prejudice - but it's highly underrated.
