  • This is my Babylon (2022) Movie Review. What is your Babylon Review or Movie Reaction. Explain your thoughts on this 2022 Damien Chazelle movie in theaters down below. Did you enjoy the this or La La Land or Whiplash more? Does this movie have a chance at the Oscars?
From Damien Chazelle, BABYLON is an original epic set in 1920s Los Angeles led by Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie and Diego Calva, with an ensemble cast including Jovan Adepo, Li Jun Li and Jean Smart. A tale of outsized ambition and outrageous excess, it traces the rise and fall of multiple characters during an era of unbridled decadence and depravity in early Hollywood.

I worked on Babylon for 4 days. "La La Land" is my favorite film (for a lot of reasons) and Babylon was my most anticipated media project of the decade so far (besides Top Gun: Maverick) before worked on it, this production was a full circle/360 experience. The best job of my life and 1 of the best, happiest and greatest days/times/experiences of my life. This was a dream come true. I watched it yesterday (only 1 in the theater/no distractions), what a surreal/magical experience. I'm also in 4 or so shots 👌. Thanks for watching everyone! Can't wait for all of you to see what we've created!

Babylon has done so badly at the box office that the film actually shut down our wonderful newly renovated movie theatre in our neighborhood. Our movie theatre had been our neighborhood for many years and of course streamiing at home has been giving theatres competition. However, I went to see Babylon and the movie theatre shut down just three days later!

Well-made but I don’t think that memorable. I think in maybe 5-10 years, people are going to dissect this movie in an attempt to suggest that it’s deeper than it is. But people who are actually interested in Old Hollywood are going to be annoyed with this movie.

Saw this a month ago at a super early screening. I think the screenplay is a huge mess and definitely falls flat in places but the passion for the craft and the unbelievable talent both in front of and behind the camera still makes for such a blast. The opening party segment has unbelievably good cinematography and camera work and the way Chazelle weaves himself through the crowd is so exciting. Not to mention Margot Robbie’s fantastic performance that steals the scene every moment she’s on camera.

There are at least four maybe five remarkable set pieces that make this film a triumph, despite its sprawling length and messy structure. I highly enjoyed it, but I’m the kind of person who loves Inherent Vice and Inland Empire, so I don’t need tidy resolutions to enjoy an ambitious film. I think this is one of those movies where watching it with a large crowd will make the experience so much better.

    • @colinmitchell1276
      @colinmitchell1276 Рік тому +1

@@djstarsign I also love both of those films and I agree. I can forgive a messy script and some character inconsistencies if it means we get absolutely dazzling scenes like the opening party and Nellie’s first day of shooting. It just feels wrong to completely dismiss a film with so much passion put into it.

This movie gave the middle finger to the "real" Hollywood in all its dirt, grime and tragedy. I am traumatized by this movie. It's dramatic waves of dark OVERtones hit like a tsunami. Nothing in this movie was insidious nor gradual other than the looming fate of Nellie and Conrad. The second he starts walking down the long hotel corridor to his room, I knew he was going to end his life. The angle of the camera "peeking" into his room through the slightly ajar door was eerie. Nellie disappearing into the "darkness" was a haunting foreshadow of what would happen to her. The scenes with McKay were symbolic of the true underworld of Hollyweird that many of us know exists. Babylon is a profound punch in the gut. There is an element of this movie in every person's life.

As a lover of silent movies, fascinated by the transition to sound I was really looking forward to this movie which purported to tell the stories of great silent stars like Jack Gilbert and Clara Bow. I quickly lost interest when I began to see production photos which show no attempt to recreate the look of the late '20s or the sensation of experiencing a masterful silent film. Of course I will see it but with low expectations, lowered further by your comments.

What has me worried about Margot Robbie is that she doesn't look like a silent film star. Not her face, makeup, hair nor wardrobe. She is a pretty odd casting. She was also miscasted in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. I think she would be great playing an european actress like Sophia Loren or even Brigitte Bardot.

@@J1NXProductions I was thinking that. I have just watched part of the film. I still think Robbie is pretty annoying here, she is given her Harley Quinn impression once more. Also, just like Paul Schrader commented recently, I was scratching my head over the use of cocaine instead of opioids/ morphine. I am interested in watching the film on the big screen nonetheless, those dolly shots are awesome. It's like Cecil B DeMille directed them while high on drugs!

'Peter Parker Smiles'. I liked the film, yet it didn't hold up to my expectations. No fault to the actors, I would say it was the direction of the characters. There were 4 main characters, and we went off in 4 different directions, not giving us a moment to be fully invested emotionally with them. If we were to have more leadership in the film and have 1 or 2 clear goals I think it would've been better. Instead this is more of a quick Rise and fall of characters who don't experience character development. I'm no season professional like Damian or any cast member, but that's just my opinion as a film lover.

I personally thought it probably showed the way Hollywood actually is, it’s spits out the old, exploits your talent and then there are a 1000 people waiting in line to do it naively. Couldn’t help but look up Charlie Chaplin after watching as well.

Yeah the movie was gross at the beginning but it was showing the extreme behavior of celebrities and hollywood who only care about their jobs and their desires.
And yes the movie went up and down. Look a rollercoaster is great but after a while it becomes repetative. It barely reached 7.6 out of 10 for me.

If the only way you can communicate the point and emotion of a scene is by using cartoonish projectile vomiting and elephant diarrhea on the camera lens, you have failed as a filmmaker. You don't need to be hit over the head every 30 seconds unless you are worried that the viewer will be bored by what is actually a sluggish and tedious slog through what should be a fascinating topic. Even the film itself seems to understand that Singing in the Rain is a far better telling of this period.

Actors playing actors spout dialog as to how magical Hollywood is, the craft is a noble one and what is up on the screen is meaningful in a movie that is a meaningless three hour snoozefest full of grotesque, crude and vulgar scenes. A poison pen letter to Hollywood. I don't know why there was a need to make this movie, but I do know there is no need to see it on the big or little screen.

Let me begin by stating, I walked out of the theatre after about 30 minutes. But before that I had to fight to keep my eyes open-literally. However I was jarred (constantly) awake by the use of the word, “fu*k” and iterations of it-over 40 times in the first half hour.
Every character used the word(s) within their bad acting, to “illustrate” and “highlight” and underline their feels-which are over the top and not believable.
An easy-to-spot sign of a bad writer(s) is how often (if at all) the the word, “fu*k” is used in a story. The more-the worse the writer. And Babylon averages on “fu*k” per minute (at least for the first thirty minutes”
Another indication of poor writing is the use of contemporary vernacular in period films (which I see/hear constantly). Babylon, writers have no clue of the vernacular of the period and (obviously-foolishly) think, “people spoke back then the same way we do today, as indicated by these two examples; 1, “mother fu*ker” was not used in the 1920-especially by white people (unless of course you’re in a poorly written film), 2, calling a man “bit*h” was also not a thing in the 1920’s but these writers (obviously) don’t know that.
And like La La Land, the acting-a product of the directing, is horrible. Well, actual the acting in Babylon is actually worse. Brad Pitt (whom I love as an actor) is at his absolute worst.” Margo Robbie (whom was wonderful opposite DiCaprio) is completely not believable.
Flea, his character and dialogue could not be worse-absolutely horrible and implacable.
Then there’s the “tit” scene; don’t know who the actress playing the director is but she deserves an award: “The-absolute-worst-performance-I’ve-seen-in-years-Award.”
She, like the others weren’t “acting,” they were reading the lines-of the terribly scribed script-terribly directed by a man who in my option has (only) one good film under his belt: Whiplash.
Lastly, the opening party scene (and most every other) are waaaaay toooo long.
The party scene labored on ad infinitum. It could and should have be (at least) eighty-five percent shorter. There’s no reason or need for endless-shots of (non stimulating) half and fully naked people dancing. (and I like naked people).
At times like these I wish I had four hands so I could give this piece of garbage four thumbs down.
BTW, I also walked out on La La Land.

A fast paced gut wrenching wild cinematic love letter filmed to intoxicate you on the glamor of Hollywood hay day and the grit behind the glitz that chews actors up and tosses them away. The danger of fame, ego, vanity, etc l. Be it the sacrifices it costs or the blind bliss to the short time to make it in a industry where the people with power to make you only care if you’re making them… money. This is art.
Almost 3 hrs, 3 wildly different acts. Following 4 people entering the film industry at its birth in Hollywoodland with silent film and carying them like a tornado of meat grinders to the time of “ talkies” . Each getting worn down and chewed up at their own paces. Some sacrificing everything , some working there way to the very top from the very bottom, some fueled by vanity and ignorance with care free disregard to the far future. All being beaten by the Hollywood machine, because in gambling the house always wins.
    Same director as LaLa Land.
Sit down , get comfortable, and buckle up for a long ride full of great performances and cameos in this wild cocaine fueled period piece. Margot Robbie, Brad Pitt, and Diego Calva have quite the take to tell.
