PC has a ton of storefronts and hybrid portables now. You could get lost playing demos while waiting for games like antonblast to release (no console demo sadly). Mobile is a bit of a stagger, similar to VR but you'll find something eventually; I liked slice & dice and demeo, though PSVR2 is not supported well once meta quest 3 (backwards compatibility but needs accessories) and overpriced apple vision pro got released. It does have something nice maybe quarterly imo. There's also a lot of censorship going on too, which PC helps with mature storefronts, and xbox game pass (which yeah support xbox if they got something you like that way, or if they add a PC game to count in xbox library).
Yeah... i have been thinking the same myself for a while now with gaming. So glad i decided to collect for Sega Saturn and Dreamcast all those years ago. Just look at what those two "failed" systems had and the legacy they left for gamers. And there were only on the market for about two years each. Look at the games on the the Saturn and Dreamcast... and then look at what we have gotten with the PS5 and Xbox Series... modern gaming (apart from Nintendo and indies) is boring. The Japanese Saturn market is insane, the amount of quality it had that never made it out of the country. I call the Saturn, 'The Aladdin's Cave of Gaming Systems'.

What Microsoft really REALLY does not understand is with the screen recorder and leaving the games market it REALLY opens them up to be userped by Linux and apple, linux is at 2% for the games market, this is no where near good for them, once it hits 10% things will really snow ball as linux will HAVE A USER BASE and with the exasperation on the .exe extension it will be a done deal
Yea my series X is basically the decoration next to my TV that almost never gets used. I think I played Morrowind a orginal xbox game on it more than anything this generation
What's funny is that Sega even had this deal with Xbox where multiple Dreamcast IPs would come to the system (and the Xbox almost got Dreamcast backwards compatibility too, until the two companies couldn't agree on which of them would run the online service for DC games played on the new system).
My biggest problem with the Xbox1 was that it required me to sign in every time I tried getting on after my brother played. And being a dumb kid, I couldn’t remember passwords all that well.
Sony also repeated it, because now it shares its games with PC players. compare PS5 with other PS. In fact, PS Vita had more exlusives (not box fan, PC player)
All these companies really forgetting that games matter the most, all whiling putting all their eggs (their dev teams) into one basket (“epic AAA blockbusters” that take forever to make, with no interesting AAs in between) This so the main killer here For reference, The Switch makes Nintendo rich despite how weak and outdated the Switch is

Well it kind of was - Dreamcast was developed in conjunction with Microsoft (It even proudly declared it ran Windows CE on the casing) and when it came time to make the Xbox controller, Microsoft pretty blatantly copied the Dreamcast controller, right down to the button scheme (with added shoulder bumpers to match button count with Sony).
The whole Xbox situation reminds me of the story of Atari and how gaming almost died, I think I watched a few videos about it long time ago and I wonder if gaming industry is going to be able to survive this fallout again :)
Gaming was in its infancy when Atari collapsed and almost took the industry with it. If Xbox goes, gaming will still be around as there are plenty of alternatives. Gaming has really come a long way despite the problems that modern gaming faces today.
*Can't disagree with nearly the entire video so, time for a nitpick!* Blame it on my personal bias, but I think you left out two important ingredients for Sony's success: 1) PS2 a.k.a. the DVD player that also plays video games! 2) PS3 a.k.a. the BluRay Player that also plays video games! These aren't the only reasons those consoles did so well, but they were pretty significant. Kinda like something I _think_ was addressed in the video; Sega and Nintendo being so punch drunk after the 16-bit era that Sony just had to *not* screw up to win, and then... proceeded to do a lot of things right. Less so 2D gaming, which is why I lost interest in Sony back then.
Technically sega should have no mention because sega didn't make any mistakes people just didn't like sega anymore waiting for the next sonic game and is why the dreamcast didn't sell well mostly because of this time *communities* where being created
The Sega/Xbox comparison makes sense, and it's definitely a good one. Unfortunately for Xbox fans, Microsoft doesn't have to care about being in the console biz anymore. They're making stupid money with their new cash cow: OpenAI. At the end of the day, Microsoft continues to be a tech juggernaut and this L means nothing to a company worth over $3 trillion. But it's sad for those of us in which Xbox at some point held a special place in their hearts. The Xbox brand might be soulless these days, but there were people involved in it and around it over the years who put their passion into it. You could see it and feel it. The destruction of that passion is what I believe people are actually disappointed over--not Xbox's self-destruction as a brand.
Most companies do this. Mostly coz they won’t have a long term vision, idea on how to make games but somehow incharge of people who are supposed to make games.
Honestly it feels like karmic justice. Microsoft rode the waves of the Dreamcast's failure, made an x86 Dreamcast to get their feet wet, then made a Super Dreamcast that rocked the industry only to end up failing like Sega.
To be fair Sony themselves did try to extend the lifespan of the PS2 with an addon called the eyetoy, just like the kinect is was awful, the difference is that Sony stopped making them once they realised that nobody wanted it whereas Microsoft just kept making kinects with there even being an updated version of it for the Xbox one which surprisingly fixed the tracking and identification issues the original had but nobody wanted it and there were no games for it so it sold badly anyway.
How does Atari compare to SEGA and Microsoft? Atari became a publisher when the IPs were bought by Hasbro Interactive, who would then be bought by Infogrames. They could have easily went third party instead of desperately clinging onto the Jaguar when the PS1 was out, and I'm pretty sure they were trying to get a Jaguar 2 before the company fell apart until the IPs were bought by Hasbro Interactive Atari did a lot of mistakes too!
Atari's situation is much more complicated, after the video game crash they completely collapsed and their parent company split them into two separate companies, Atari Corporation (the hardware side), and Atari Games/Tengen (the software division), these two ended up being owned by completely different people. Atari Corporation carried on making consoles but there was no software division as that was owned by another company, hence Atari's arcade games appeared on rival systems and not on the Atari consoles. Atari Corporation had to outsource development for consoles like the 7800 and Jaguar in order to get any games at all. So you see Atari Corporation could not go third party as they didn't really make any games.
Microsoft are always going to make new Xboxs because they have too much money but they shouldn’t have shut down those developers I don’t really care about their games though but I’m going to be angry if they shut down Ninja Theory.
Sony didn't throw Nintendo off a cliff. Sony shat all over the place, and Nintendo stuck with making fun games. Microsoft has considered their big sales are in software, not hardware, hence, they're phasing out their Xbox hardware division, and turning xbox into a purely software thing including XBL and Gamepass on other platforms like PC, since the integration of XBL services and such to Windows 10 and 11. Sony and microsoft are running their gaming divisions like tech companies, which is a bad idea. The way Sony and Microsoft are running is: When years report losses, everybody gets a pay cut, and people start getting fired. In years of profits, the executives get the raises and people below them get fired, forcing crunch to overwork the employees. The scraps the executives didn't devour are used on hiring if any. Needless to say, this is how to get your company branded as "Black" in Japan, which is practically a death sentence to your company as nobody will want to work for a company where morale just keeps getting lower and lower. Nintendo does the opposite of Sony and Microsoft, doing things the old fashioned way, the Japanese way. When Nintendo has years of losses, it's the executives who bear the burden of responsibility for their poor decisions, and the executives, CEOs, and President take cuts to their pay! All to keep the regular employees paid well and kept in high morale! When years report profits, those profits go into the regular employee paychecks, and hiring sprees start up! The executives get their pay normalized and they effectively get the scraps of those profits, thus drastically increasing morale in the company! If a specific employee has done something so bad it failed miserably, then the individual faces something that can be considered worse than being fired! A "Window seat". Basically, in a Window Seat job, you get put aside out of the way where you just clock in at the start of the day, then clock out at the end of the day, no demotions, no chance of promotion, you're still collecting your paycheck, you're just there doing next to nothing. Gunpei Yukoi, the father of the Gameboy, was condemned to a window seat job after his project the Virtual Boy failed. He was considering a new job but he died in a car accident. Nintendo is so far the #1 richest company in Japan. Sony can't even get into the top 300 richest companies in Japan! Microsoft is... I can't say... They don't have much of a presence in Japan outside of Windows PCs. Sony lost a major anti-trust lawsuit in Japan. Sony was caught trying to lilterally force Nintendo out of the console gaming market. The Japanese government didn't take too kindly to their golden boy who didn't commit war crimes being forced out (Seriously, I looked into it! Nintendo was making Hanafuda and patriotic (Japanese) cards during the 2nd World War in Kyoto! Nintendo focused on entertaining people during the 2nd world war and didn't take part in any of the violence! Yes cards went to troops and civilians alike, but that's about it.). Sony got themselves in legal trouble, and took a massive L. And Sony established themselves to cut corners and be cheap with their hardware divisions, while charging excessive prices and pretending their gutted piece of shit was a superior product. Sony wasn't objectively superior to anyone, they just wore the fancier looking mask with the pretty garbage they found, and acted like they were cock of the walk. Their ego bit them in the ass eventually, and Sony bet on wokeness. And people are so sick of it, Sony is facing the shutdown of their hardware division, because going 3rd party is the only hope they have to keep playstation operating. The playstation hardware is garbage because of how shabbily put together it is with sub-standard cooling. The liquid metal meant to serve as a cooling measure for the PS5 is leaking into the motherboard and frying everything. Basically, Nintendo is on top as the console king. Sony and Microsoft are leaving the console games market. Microsoft because the Xbox division found more financial success in software sales. Sony is pretty much collapsing because they keep making poor decisions and shafting EVERYONG. Xbox gamepass is screwing over developers, while Sony is screwing over customers. All the while, Nintendo is keeping chill, and doing what they always did. And now the only real competition Nintendo has is in the Steam Deck, and in retro emulation machines.
I like the fact that xbox is a crappy console! It puts me in my place and reminds me of all the times I have been ripped off in the past. In that way it's very vintage 😎 ❤
The biggest thing seems to be that you need exclusives, they need to be good, and they need to be early. By that logic, Sony has also fallen on its face recently. I can only count ONE exclusive I have any interest in, TWO if you don't count Steam as a legitimate option... and the inarguable one is the freaking tech demo! Contrast that with what my usual stakes are in a console: there needs to be TEN games that are (or will be) available that I couldn't play elsewhere. Honestly, if it weren't for the scalping that PS5 "suffered", I doubt it would've sold well at all... unless the lack of scalping encouraged less cross-platform games, and thus more value on that front.

They kinda did, almost every game by Atlus (a SEGA owned studio) was PlayStation exclusive from the ps1 era to the beginning of ps5.
@@Paprika_Real4 mostly the entire Yakuza series is available on Xbox. The Persona series is not really exclusive to PlayStation, there just know where their audience is. Although, it's weird that the persona series rarely shows up on Nintendo consoles other than the 3DS.
Yo how do you only have 23 subs, this vid is pretty decently well made.
Thank You, you could help by sharing it if you want.
Master System was most definitely NOT beaten by the NES in every single way. Just in the only way it counts.
Good games and loads of them.
And also in sound! Without that Yamaha peripheral at least...
@@lonecom685At least I can hear myself saying the letter A on the Ricoh 2A03 (NES,) unlike the TI-SN76489 (Master System.) Also, just like the Master System, Japanese Exclusive Audio Expansion exists, and the amount of options (and different sound types) offered by other chips were insane. Hell, the Konami VRC7 is just a cost reduced OPLL, the FM expansion chip in the Japanese Master System. It's just missing 3 out of the 9 channels, and drums mode. Also the N163 exists and it's just a Namco C30 (just without noise and it multiplexes its channels unlike every other chip, which you can hear its artifacts after making it use more than 4 channels,) meaning it's still wavetable, something Namco was god at in the 1980s.
At least the Master System had Brazil
The NES also had a lot more _bad_ games.
wth, only 43 subs?

It'll go the way of Zune.

Microsoft hasn't tried to understand the video game industry, only to cash on it.
Before Xbox was the thing, they were including games into Windows since 3.0. Sure, Age Of Empires would make them consider putting their money into game development, but it never came from them - only from somebody else.
And they killed the studio that made Age Of Empires.
The Wii played a role in the making of the Kinetic.
As with Sega, at least they had some character.
Oh yeah, I'm so happy for my old nintendo stuff and ps2/4.
I don't think I ever laughed so damn hard, yet was so thoroughly educated at the same time🤣🤣🤣
Sega has yakuza, Sony has PlayStation (PlayStation has a library), Xbox has Bethesda...
Sega make a lot more than just yakuza
Arcades 3rd party games ect

Sony make movies now so not really true gaming and xbox..huh you mean the trash can that have no games 😂
Xbox died with the 360 not even debatable
PlayStation is doing the same exact thing now. PlayStation library will dwindle down watch it’s already especially where a lot of exclusives are slowly coming to pc

Xbox HAD Gears of War but they fucked that up too.

@@xavierpeterson7139 Exclusives coming to PC isn't a big deal tbh. As a PC gamer myself, not many of us would fully make the jump to console, and not many console gamers are willing to fully jump to PC. At most, we'll do both. PC is a largely separate market.
@@Crafty_boy70 that is not prevalent to my point.whats the point of having the console if it comes to pc? It’s a very big deal. In all honesty exclusive should be exclusive not multuplatform that’s what drives people to buy your hardware
I guess this means that Halo will end up going the Sonic route. Being the one exclusive franchise the console is synonymous with, eventually going multiplatform and that becoming the norm in a decade. Can't wait for Halo 5 DX and Halo Infinite: Battle on the Switch 2
Tbh, xbox might be bad at this whole console war thing but not gonna lie they got best features. Awesome backwards compatibility, easy to publish games for indie devs, having cheaper alternative.
But the biggest mistake they did was marketing.
They have a strong gun called "Series S" there is lot, i mean lot of people living in 2th, 3rd world countries wanna see cheap gaming, only if they used this as marketting tactic, and boom you get lot of sales.
Steam is miles better for cheap gaming due to regional pricing making games cost as much as they should and not 3 times more due to devalued local currency.
I have seen games that were nearly half-off on Switch and PS4 but still cost more than on Steam.

Good video, and accurate. the only real difference is that Xbox is gonna attempt a 5th console, I'm pretty sure. but I doubt Xbox will continue after the 5th console failure, my prediction is that they're gonna to try to put all their baskets on that, buy all companies they can, to try to make that console sucessful, than fail, and than they'll get out of the console market and go third party.
They're closing studios right now and putting games out on other systems
I subscribed for this video and i hope i stay for another one, this is really good.
The difference between Sega and Microsoft is that Microsoft has so much money. That it doesn't need to change their ways.
Love the Valua theme from Skies of Arcadia in the background.
Although, unlike SEGA, I don’t see a come back.
Done in a style very much like internet historian... very good and nostalgic
Haven't really bothered to buy a console in forever now. I haven't bothered paying attention to AAA titles and ended up just returning to monke and replaying older games again or finding older games to play. Its been harder to get into newer games. Also this video appeared on my recommended, this video is fucking great funny as hell, liked and subscribed.
May I recommend Skies of Arcadia(Legends), emulate it if you can, of course.

The only reason Id buy a Saturn these days is for 2 games... Snatcher (a Hideo Kojima game, go check it out), and Radiant Silvergun (aka the prequel to Ikaruga, which came out on Dreamcast, GC originally).

Forget the games industry, that opening quote applies to humanity in general

As a Playstation fan, you're completely right, I haven't bought a PS5, and probably won't.
I just doubled down on my PC/Steam Deck.
All these companies really forgetting that games matter the most, all whiling putting all their eggs (their dev teams) into one basket (“epic AAA blockbusters” that take forever to make, with no interesting AAs in between)
This so the main killer here
For reference, The Switch makes Nintendo rich despite how weak and outdated the Switch is
At least the Dreamcast HAD A MODEM, that was wayyy ahead of it's time. The Xbox Series X WENT BACK IN TIME in terms of "new features".
Good thing I bought the Xbox One pt.2 at a 50% discount. Might be done with games for good and sticking with what I got.

Consoles as a concept are kind of dead - other than the switch they are just less good PCs
Maybe Valve or Epic?
Valve probably will release a steam machine 2 soon enough, that will catapult into a increase of living room pcs
@@trevor_mounts_musicconsoles would be a “dead concept” if it weren’t for the fact that hundreds of millions of people still play them. And most people don’t want to spend a thousand dollars and up on a gaming pc When you can just pay 300-500 dollars to get a very similar experience.
Imagine if Valve releases a competent Steam Machine that takes the software of the Deck and puts it in a living room console form factor. I would love to see that.
Cant help but get an aneurysm whenever an american gives their narrow view of sega history. The saturn had tons of baller games, so did the master system. Just cuz you didnt get them, doesnt meant they didnt happen. As a matter of fact, Saturn>n64 all day any day.

It's kinda scary in retrospect how even back in the day people called the Xbox the successor to the Sega systems.
Great video man
The whole Xbox situation reminds me of the story of Atari and how gaming almost died, I think I watched a few videos about it long time ago and I wonder if gaming industry is going to be able to survive this fallout again :)
Gaming was in its infancy when Atari collapsed and almost took the industry with it. If Xbox goes, gaming will still be around as there are plenty of alternatives. Gaming has really come a long way despite the problems that modern gaming faces today.
This video is great

*Can't disagree with nearly the entire video so, time for a nitpick!*
Blame it on my personal bias, but I think you left out two important ingredients for Sony's success:
1) PS2 a.k.a. the DVD player that also plays video games!
Less so 2D gaming, which is why I lost interest in Sony back then.
the saturn had more games than n64, theres over a thousand
its just most never left japan
I do like that the series X has some backwards compatibility. Since most companies are too lazy or greedy to port their games.
Technically sega should have no mention because sega didn't make any mistakes people just didn't like sega anymore waiting for the next sonic game and is why the dreamcast didn't sell well mostly because of this time *communities* where being created
And it all ends with a 380mm orbital barrage....
Yup. I switched to linux over 2 years ago
Most companies do this. Mostly coz they won’t have a long term vision, idea on how to make games but somehow incharge of people who are supposed to make games.
What is the music that plays between 0:00 and 0:34? It sounds so familiar but I can't find it.
Honestly it feels like karmic justice. Microsoft rode the waves of the Dreamcast's failure, made an x86 Dreamcast to get their feet wet, then made a Super Dreamcast that rocked the industry only to end up failing like Sega.
My last Xbox was the one x. I can’t see me ever replacing it
To be fair Sony themselves did try to extend the lifespan of the PS2 with an addon called the eyetoy, just like the kinect is was awful, the difference is that Sony stopped making them once they realised that nobody wanted it whereas Microsoft just kept making kinects with there even being an updated version of it for the Xbox one which surprisingly fixed the tracking and identification issues the original had but nobody wanted it and there were no games for it so it sold badly anyway.
Xbox 360 was the peak of xbox. The only games i enjoy now are from Nintendo. If Nintendo ever flatlines i would just stop gaming forever
How does Atari compare to SEGA and Microsoft?
Atari became a publisher when the IPs were bought by Hasbro Interactive, who would then be bought by Infogrames. They could have easily went third party instead of desperately clinging onto the Jaguar when the PS1 was out, and I'm pretty sure they were trying to get a Jaguar 2 before the company fell apart until the IPs were bought by Hasbro Interactive
Atari did a lot of mistakes too!
I'm going to steal that "call my shrink im losing it" clip
top meme material
Microsoft are always going to make new Xboxs because they have too much money but they shouldn’t have shut down those developers I don’t really care about their games though but I’m going to be angry if they shut down Ninja Theory.
Btw, typo on "short sided" in the slide that you compare the saturn to the x bone.
Idk if I'd consider a mobile developer and the guys that made redfall as top talent within Bethesda.
The root of xbox's problem : no good 1st party titles
Also the french kiss scene caught me off guard ffs
The last thing we need is a monopoly on consoles
Calling Bethesda games both burnt and undercooked at the same time is a solid description. Or a sawdust Hot Pocket.
