This was such a great help! Thank you so, so much! I dabbled with Daz and Poser years ago, and I'm trying to get back into it, and things have certainly changed! Your video was a great help in getting my directories sorted and a fresh install of DIM completed! Cheers!!
You've saved my bacon once again Jay, thank you. My Daz files were in a complete mess so I deleted the lot and did a clean intall from scratch following your excellent video. All appears to be working faultlessly now, so thanks once again. 👍👍
Thank you for a great video! Today, I did a fresh install of Daz Install Manager and Daz Studio. I also use an extra drive. I’m glad you pointed out that “color” thumbnails are installed and greyed thumbnails means the product is not installed. The question is why do both types of thumbnails have the “circle/down arrow” on them with an option to install? This appears to be an extra step to me. Any ideas? I see the same thing on this video too.
Good question! Years ago, Daz were looking for better ways to install products and from what I understand potentially phase out Install Manager. That's when they added an option to install products directly in Daz Studio. So technically, you can double-click a product and it will install and be (quasi) usable, however there's no way to point it at a particular install location when you do this. Many users have reported issues with this process and hence it is currently not recommended to install products this way. Daz Central was another way to install content, but too has been phased out and Install Manager is the preferred and best way to work. Hope this helps!
Wow, that cleared up a few questions, very informative...but,... I haven't used Daz Studio regularly for many years (I still use it occasionally on my WinXP machine, Studio 3 and Studio 4) and when my Daz content was moved to another drive (without my knowing it, which when I tried to load a saved scene I was promoted to find the textures, maps etc) I'm having to re-educate myself as to where stuff should go! Fast forward to now... new PC, Win 11, I installed Studio 4.2 (a manual download and install, I'm wary of DazCentral, I don't do "cloud" connecting, I don't like being "monitored"). Since I've only used Studio 3 95% of the time the new interface is very confusing, all the "content" was greyed out in need of installing. Just to see what would happen I clicked on the Gen8 Female Starter Essentials and a zip file downloaded. I clicked on it and it unzipped to the default Daz folderon my C drive. However, it unzipped into my User//ONEDRIVE/documents/Daz3D/etc folder. I hate Microsoft's OneDrive! I have disabled the cloud syncing but can't uninstall "OneDrive" from my machine and so far haven't been able to stop/override content from default installing there. 🤬 If I copy those Daz content folders to an external drive and then delete those folders from the original location how do I tell Studio where to look from now on? And I notice in the Left pane there is a Lost and Found tab and it looks like all the products I've bought at Daz in years past, they're greyed out and so I'm assuming I just need to (connect to Daz and) double click and they install, is that right? Or do I get the zip file and then install from there? OR would it be easier to install the DazInstallManager? I don't want to use DazCentral....
Install Manager all the way I say! You can map your old folders manually, but be aware that Smart Content won't work that way. To do that, right-click on Daz Studio Formats in the Content Library tab, then select Add Directory. If I were you, I'd probably re-install all Daz content using Install Manager, including Daz Studio itself. On that note, we're currently using 4.20, not 4.2 (that's over 10 years old, and 18 versions behind).
Very nice and helpful. I got the problem to install DAZ completely new cause my DB crashed totaly and by the way Your tutorial about Roaming/ delete appdata (How to reset DAZ Studio completely and start "afresh" ) was very helpful to clear all the data DAZ remember on Windows. Last week, I did it at the same way You show in this video, because I also prefer DIM for organize my content. There is only one thing for the future, maybe You can make a tutorial too, I think many user would like it and its about userdata/ content. In the meanwhile I got thousands item of content and I will buy a new faster comp. I have this content on three different external drives (SSD) and I want to use it with the new comp. I found many posts in the forum about this, but not really clear like You show in Your videos, what I have do to that DAZ on my new comp know that I have allready installed content on this drives. It`s about userdata files I think. WP Guru, please can You help to show us to handle this in a simple understanding way, like You always do. Many thanks in advance!
Thank you for all you do for your subscribers. Your instructions are very much needed and appreciated. However, in this video, I did not get the same result for a new rebuild. My HD crashed and all was lost. (Now I use the cloud) Anyway, both DIM and DC downloads of DS leaves me with no UI display. In properties it shows as "Read only"? When I administer a change properties it still acts the same (NO UI) In your experiences have you found a solution to this? I have an outstanding request with DZ3D help, but they have not responded yet.
Hi Terry, that sounds odd indeed. I have heard from other users that they have encountered weird UI issues, but thankfully have not had them myself. Try following my article about removing all traces from Daz Studio and start again from scratch, perhaps this will help: www.versluis.com/2020/04/how-to-completely-reset-daz-studio-and-install-manager/ I would strongly recommend Install Manager over Daz Central. Although the latter was supposed to replace it, Install Manager is more reliable. Good luck, let me know how it goes.
so, nothing downloads on my fresh, defaulted installation in windows 10. all packages, including Daz itself fails to download and just has the retry button. any ideas? i've given DIM admin privs, reset every path to default (even though i'd like fo fully install everything daz related on a non-system drive), but still nothing downloads! i'm logged on in DIM, i've allowed it through windows firewall - what else can i try?
@@arevikhakobyan3798 i couldn't tell you how i got it to work. i dont remember. i know i uninstalled dim and tried again and it worked. if i remember ill let you know.
This was so helpful, thank you tons! I'm having one issue though. In Content Library, I made my base directories to separate products such as morphs and shapes, etc. I used DIM and selected the relevant paths for my installations. Some products went into their correct folders and work perfectly in DAZ, while others didn't show in their proper folders at all, even though DIM says it's installed there. So while in Content Library, I looked at the Products directory and all my items are listed there, but the products that I'm having trouble with showing up in their correct folders where DIM says it's installed, those ones are greyed out in Products and not showing as installed at all. I clicked on one to install from there just to see what would happen, and those products automatically install in the cloud folder, then those products are available. I don't understand why it's ignoring the assigned path in DIM, and going to the cloud folder? Are you familiar with this? Thanks!
Did you map the new folders in Daz Studio? It needs to know where the content lives, otherwise it'll only see the database entry from Install Manager, but not the actual files. Head over to the Content Library tab, then right-click on the Daz Studio Formas entry and choose "Add a new base directory". You'll have to do that for every additional folder, that should make everything available. Although Daz Studio can install products through the Smart Content tab, it will - like you've observed - install things into yet another folder, namely the cloud folder. Although content will work, such installations are not linked with Install Manager and can result in multiple versions of the same product being installed. It's best to avoid it and do everything through Install Manager.
4:48 I can't afford to leave Daz in my C. I changed these defaults carefully to E. However I ran into problems, some content downloaded, other didnt. Most importantly the application did not download, instead of download button it shows Retry. Is there a way to fix this? EDIT: I solved it and now everythings working perfectly. You just need to uncheck Install after download and do it manualy.
Great tutorial! But i have a problem :-( when i start daz there is following error: " several daz studio features that require a valid postgreSQL CMS connection, such as context aware content views and loading content installed using the daz connect service, will not be available. check yout network, anti-virus and firewall settings for conflicts" Because i´m new with pc/windows , i´m not sure how to go on. Should i reinstall all , change firewall settings and install again?. Thank you for helpng
Hi Olivia, Daz Studio relies on a few additional items to operate properly. The error suggests one of them is not installed. The easiest way to rectify the problem is to open up Install Manager, then search for "postgres" and install the things that are shown (one of them isn't necessary, but it doesn't hurt to add them both). While you're there, also search for "default" and install the Default Resources, those will come in handy. And of course the Genesis 8 and 9 Starter Essentials. When you're done, Daz Studio should not show the error anymore. Let me know if it works ;-)
@@WPguru Thank you so much for your help, but after trying several times, DAZ still shows the error :-( Now i deinstalled completely and will try it again

Sounds like the Starter Essentials are not installed. Close Daz Studio, fire up Install Manager, search for “starter” and install everything that comes up, then try again. Do not use Daz Central.
What happens if you search for "daz studio" in Install Manager? Check all three tabs at the top and see if it's in either of them. Sometimes it's in the second (downloaded) tab, but the installation hasn't happened.
